Paul--
Did your Clivia ever bloom???? A while ago you said you saw a bud emerging.
Pictures, please!
Indoor plants at Mid At- continued Feb 2013
There were just two of them at the York Show and it wasn't even a Flower Vendor that had them. I would have bought one but wasn't willing to pony up the Big $$ they wanted for a plant that I wasn't familiar with.
Gita-
It is still working it's way up. I will post the bloom. I see the other one almost every other and day, it isn't showing any other signs. As for the other two I haven't spoken with the new hosts but of course the next I do I will ask.
Terri -- I was trying to look it up and was finding conflicting information. Is that the only one in the family they have found suitable for a houseplant? Some of the material I was reading suggested they need a humid environment. Also, I came across some material that said some identify it as a shrub growing to be 6x6. Now I assume in a pot you can stunt that. Inquiring minds.
Holly, those orchids are beautiful. No, no, no - I need to stop looking, I can't take on orchids yet as another new thing that I know nothing about - already have taken on christmas cactus, streps, avs, and now the new medinilla thing. I think I need to show some success with these before I dive into orchids LOL. Oh, but how pretty...
The medinilla came from Bluemount Nursery in Ashburn, but I bet Merrifield carries them. The one I bought was in a 6" square pot, and is sporting two huge blooms. Price was a splurge at $34.00. I passed it by three times, put it in and out of the cart two additional times, and finally talked myself into it. I know nothing about it except what was on the tag and on the website I posted, so it will be a learning experience. I plan to keep it in the conservatory - a lot of light from windows and roof glass, but stays cool at night, and no humidity to speak of. Water and balaned fertilizer every 7-10 days as the tag recommends. I'll pass on observations along the way. Wish me luck - would hate to waste that $34 bucks...
good luck aspenhill!
HOlly those are Oncidiums, you have others too right?...are they as easy as Phalaenopsis? Phael is said to be easiest and mine is reliable, Dendrobium has not rebloomed for me.
Sally,
Another brain jolt from the past......
IF I remember correctly--a Dendrobium re-blooms only on new stems it has to grow first.
I may be wrong....
Here is something from Garden Web on Dendroboims. Maybe something will help.....
http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/orchids/msg0123151216769.html
And this from some kind of Plant Blog...
http://www.proplants.com/guide/dendrobium-orchids-plant-care-guide
I have NEVER grown an orchid...so I do not know much about them, except what I have learned,
or heard, in my assorted jobs in garden departments. G.
HA, I would have bought the one I saw if it was $35.00 they wanted $50.00 for the one I saw. So consider yourself as getting a "deal" LOL
Sally Yes they are Oncidiums, I have had some luck with them and the one I have from last years show is getting ready to rebloom. I also got two others from the show that have buds but aren't blooming yet and a small cute little thing that Ric picked up to mount. Here is his little one and the other two that haven't bloomed yet. The one with the striped leaves is putting up some type of spike not even quite sure what the flower will look like. I loved the leaves and like the supense of waiting for the flower. The other one is also a fragrant flower. Very lovely scent but not near as strong as the sharry baby. I think I am pretty much done buying orchids for a while I had 3 before the show and picked up 5 more. Only thing I could see getting is some small ones for Ric to play with. Depending on how this mounting goes I could see a pretty piece of driftwood with several orchids mounted on it.
Gita, THank you!! THe Gardenweb thread was very informative. It sounds like the kind of Dendrobium I have is very poor at reblooming. I might repot this spring just to say I tried, and will not sweat it if it fails. I got it on clearance no doubt. Yup, I remember now. I liked the pot and then it got broken. Ah, me...
Holly, those variegated leaves are to die for. Your middle one I think is a Phalaenopsis. ALdi has some good size Phals right now, Easter I guess, $9.99, and I am keeping an eye on them.
Now I know better about buying clearance Dendrobium.
Sally I think it is a Phal, too. Need to get a clearer pic of it.
the one with the stripe leaves is sarcoglottis sceptrodes 'lime galaxy'. The other one is Zygo Advance Australia 'HOF' Really Orchid has it's own language and I haven't learned it yet and may never.

Holly and Ric--
I am sure you must have noticed one of the largest orchid Vendors when you were at the Show.
It is "The Little Greenhouse"--right here in Parkville.
He is just about 5 minutes N. of the Hartford Rd. N. exit from #695. (Exit 31,,,Carney).
He has been there for 35 years. If you ever need a question answered--just call him.
Phone: 410-661-4748. He is a very nice man....
Gita
Gita two of my orchids came from The Little GH.
Pretty Donner and Gita!
OOH Paul my Strep is not much bigger, hope it blooms soon.
Was down at Homestead Gardens for their 40th year celebration. Not an orchid person, but a little (mini) pink one caught my eye as it had bold purple leaves! It's called 'Pink Girl'
http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchidtalk/phalaenopsis-oncidium-intergenerics-bloom/27289-phalaenopsis-wenlong-pink-girl-1-a.html
I assume we all got the white one from Marlene?
Mine was in bloom when I got it. Then those finished..
Now I have 2 new blooms and 2 other buds yet to open.
No picture either....G.
Mine is pretty small, too. I have it in the GH will have to take a better look at it.
No, I think mine is the Goose Egg I got from Donner. I had one that I almost lost it and it is coming back so it's pretty small.
Gita- mine is. I can't speak for anyone else, but the odds are pretty good.
That's a very cool orchid coleup.
That led me to google up an article from Better Homes and Gardening, called Ten Easy Orchids. I cry BULL SPIT on that! Worthless article that says every type of orchid is easy.
And thats the Nice Sally twin saying that
; ^)
It happened again LOL... I was watering the plants in the conservatory and noticed that there was something odd about the eugenia topiary - it was datura seedlings all around the base! I guess you can never under estimate the staying power of seeds.
First, the morning glories from last year's seed sowing attempt germinated this year in the seed starting mix that I re-used for the daturas, and then again more morning glories germinated in that same re-used mix that I used when re-potting amaryllis bulbs. Once the datura seeds germinated, I xferred them to individual pots. I then used the seed starting mix to top off the eugenia topiary and other houseplants when I moved them from the stock nursery pots that they came in to decorative pots. I guess I gave up too soon on the datura germination - I now have about 10 more in with the topiary.... actually quite fun to discover these little quirks.
hey, Teri--
Plant Swap is coming.....dig those little plants up and pot them for swapping....
Maybe people in NJ are not so well supplied with daturas as we are here....
My doing---I suppose.....G.
I will happily accept any of the plain white daturas w/that incredible night fragrance...just sayin'.
Sally - I've been told by numerous nursery folks that the Brassavolas are VERY easy and like to be dry between waterings (read: MY kind a plant) - they also see to be in agreement that the Brassavola nodosas have one of the best scents. I don't know this first hand as mine hasn't bloomed...yet. I do have a running list of the orchids that I've found personally to be strongly scented (course it's a small list).
Gita - I don't suppose that That Little Greenhouse will be on my way to NJ?? ^_^
Ric - you have your very own sign on!!!!!
Holly - please describe the scent of those Sharry Berrys.
All - was mentioned at an Orchid get together Becky and I attended for a few months that Dynamo's organic tomato plant food (red tomato shaped container at HD etc) was great for orchids.
They have a chocolate scent.
looking up Brassovolas...
Chantelle---
Assuming you would travel north on I-95, you would not be that close to the "Little Greenhouse".
IF you come TO I95 via our Beltway (#695)from the West loop--it would be quite "on your way".
It is less than a mile from #695 exit 31 north--Carney (Harford Rd.).
Then, you can hop right back on #695 E. and go 2 more exits to I-95.
You can Google "Little Greenhouse"--Baltimore and then click on "directions"...to get the bird's eye view.
Brassovolas came up "not found" in my search on PF.
G.
brassavola an a in the middle
Oh, The Orchid I bought last year is blooming It is Nia Rose "Sweet 16" I didn't remember what it looked like but I find it funny that the two I bought this year were not only similar but so was the one I bought last year. Guess that just shows how much I like this fragrant variety of Orchid. The Nia Rose is larger and not quite as white as the Heaven Scent 'Redolence' you might not be able to really see the difference in the pictures. But sitting side by side it is pretty noticeable.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!! So amazing, Holly!!!!!
Hi folks - I am so sorry that I didn't know this thread was going on. I would have been here before now for sure because you folks are now talking what's up my alley. Anyway......have some photos to share but will break in to sections.....Want to start with my Clivia from Gita. Also a Begonia that bloomed for the first time ever and the bloom has lasted for some months, so that has been fun. I can't recall the name of the Begonia, but it too came from Gita ages and ages ago. I have made several more plants from the original one but this is the largest.
I also happened to take pictures a while back when a couple of my African Violets were blooming....these most likely came from Donnerville. I will close the picture taking today with the very healthy and fast growing Brugmasia from.....guess who? Gita again.....thanks Gita and Donnerville and all others who have so kindly shared your bounty with me.
Ruby
Nice pictures Ruby, My Cliva don't bloom. Maybe the pot is just too big. Nice plants but those Sprouts are just lovely. Look how big they are getting, I remember the baby pics you posted just a few weeks ago, I am sure. LOL
Wow Ruby, great houseplants showcased in the pictures, but I couldn't help but notice all the others in the background. Holy moly, what a great collection you have. Little sprouts are growing too - how cute. It is pretty neat that we all have some of the same gifted things. I have brug cuttings growing from Gita too.
An easy easy house plants that blooms on and off every few months is the walking iris.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2108/
I have the yellow and it is such a surprise whenever it decides to bloom and requires little water. Can't wait to propagate those little walking babies.
Ruby--
Nice plants! You really do a great job on them!
The Begonia is "Beefsteak Begonia".
WOW! I have NEVER seen a bloom stalk on it that big!!! That is fat too!
Must be all the good light it gets by the door. Do you take yours outside for the summer?
I do--It loves it and gets all lush--and then when I bring it into my dim house--it loses all the
beautiful big leaves it grew while outside. Back to square #1.
Mine gets gnarly every couple of years--and then I try to transplant it and start new ones.
It never seems to "take" from those fat, gnarly stems....
These are easy enough to start from one leaf in water, though.
Here is one from years ago--in its glory! Oct. 2009
Beautiful orchid, Holly.
Ruby, your plants look great. The Mulberry Jazz looks healthier than the mama plant that is sitting unhappily on my windowsill.
Paul, that's an interesting Walking Iris. Too bad it cannot walk out of the pot into my house ;-).
