Indoor plants at Mid At- continued Feb 2013

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I think there is a good chance that somewhere down the line I will get one, but not now. I'll wait a little bit and see how many pop up at the nurseries around here.

Aspenhill, you have the perfect place with your conservatory for such a classy plant..I hope it does well for you. Send us a pic of it in its new home! Enjoyment first, propagation later. Oh yes. I'd really like to know about its fragrance. Thanks

THis is my current future-sharing project- a mini Epiphyllum of some kind from Dutch Plant Farm. Hope it blooms this summer so we see what it looks like,.

Sally--

That looks like it has grown since you bought it! It was so miserably pot-bound.
Must be your good, loving care! Can't wait to see what it blooms like....

Not exactly indoor plants-- the two pink Brug cuttings look great but my gosh I think I have to water them almost every day! One or the other is starting to wilt every day it seems May have to up pot and if so they need to come upstairs and start the Invasion of the Windowsills .. prelude to Battle for Horizontal Well Lit Areas..

THey are fighting some tiny orangey-tan bugs too- aphids?? Spraying with dilute alcohol.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Hah, you should see the size of the Brugs I have. I bet they are almost 4ft tall. One came directly from Gita and the other from Donner, I think it is a Gita Brug also. Then there are 2 or 3 smaller and more reasonable sized one in the GH.
This is the one I got from Donner at the seed swap. I don't think she had room for it.

HAHA! I can't imagine keeping a full size Brug green over winter! I have them dormant. I forget you and your amazing sunny " living" area- gives new meaning to a LIVING ROOM.
I have got to get one of those orchids for my next; thats one of your Oncidiums, right?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I think that Brug has grown a foot since I brought it home from the seed swap. I made the mistake of giving it just a little water when I first brought it home and it took right off. That Orchid is Oncidium Heaven Scent 'Redolence' it has a strong fragrance, a floral & chocolate scent.
Sally, I had those orangey-tan aphids? on my scarlet milkweed last summer.
There is another brug just like it in the upstairs plant room. I have no idea how I will get it back down. LOL

Time to put in that elevator or that second story slide! I use a hand truck to move around my big clunker bananas, etc. just bungee them on and no big power lifts on or off.

Again, not an orchid person but curious. Saw some orchids called "Just Add Ice" 3 ice cubes a week for watering instructions. Interesting approach to death by overwatering.

A strep relative?

Your strep relative is a gesneriad....
It is a Primulina, formerly known as Chirita.
I don't know which variety is is though...
I think 'Aiko' is a yellow one.

Holy---

IF you have a sun room. or a sunny space--Brugs will grow and bloom all winter.

I have an elderly friend, whom I need to go visit. She has a beautiful sun-room with a fireplace in it.
it is her favorite room--and she sits there often.

I was there about 3 years ago and got a cutting of her Dr. Seuss which was full sized and in full bloom.
It was one I gave her....That was the year I lost my Dr. S. cuttings--so I had to go begging....

My 3 Brugs, dormant (?) in my basement, are trying to grow--they all have leaves on the tips.
You would see--when I take them outside and give them a good drink--they just go POOOF!
All green in less then two weeks. They are total survivors,,,,
My cuttings are doing OK--but nothing spectacular. I was late in taking them...that may be the "issue"...

Holly--treat your brug as if she was outside. feed her and all that--and, I bet, she will bloom for you.

In the past I have always had spider mite issues with the brugs but (fingers crossed) so far not this year. Not that I don't have pest issues just that they haven't found the brugs yet.

I walked through Lowes today and checked out the discount table and found 2 "dwarf" orchids, $3 each, one of which has excellent roots for growing on a piece of driftwood.
Judy, I've seen those signs orchids 1-2-3, just add ice. I heard a grower at the Timonum Fairgrounds saying he would like to find whoever started that terrible advise about the ice. He said it's just not that simple. He feels this current marketing attempt will turn people off on orchids.
I too have been watching the Medinillas and found these:

Wow 3 bucks and that will be in bloom for months.

Little orange aphids found more plants here. Hope I found Them in the nick of time...

Hey Ric.... I call that the "save me now" table! LOL!
Good deal!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Good catch--Ric...I think these little orchids are soo cute...
At our store--bell just throws them away--most still in good bloom....oh, well....

Re the ice cubes---We have a lot of Orchids displayed on a big, round, 3-tier stand.
And there--hanging from the side are tear-off flyers telling people to put 3 ice cubes on their
Orchids every week.
I have heard of watering CC's with ice cubes..but orchids????

Holly--
Once you get any kinds of bugs on your inside plants, they seem to be hard to get rid of.
Try to treat anything you bring in, in the fall, with Systemics so that any bad guys can get killed.
You are not the only one who seems to never be able to get rid of bugs on their plants....
and, unknowingly, pass them on to others with them.

I give very few of my house plants away because of the bug issue. I have been treating them with systemics every few months. They all got a good system spray before coming home and since they came inside I have taken them out on the patio at least twice for a good spray. I have tried the systemic granules as well. What is really a pain is the white cottony things, not sure mealy bug or soft scale. I have had them for a good 2 years now and just can not get rid of them. I thought that when I went from the neam oil to the systemic that would take care of the issue but they keep coming back. Pretty frustrated by now. Good thing is that I haven't seen them in the GH. There are some spider mite issues down there but not these things.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes! Mealies are the hardest to get rid of....I would say--scale are the second hardest.

I could tell you horror stories from my first 5 years at HD when the WHOLE,
filled GH was in my care. It had old, rotting wood tables and no one seemed to control the number
of plants that were shipped. My Garden Mgr. was an arrogant 12yr. old in a man's body.
Eventually--I took over all the ordering and cutting and selected the plants i wanted.
I called the vendors ans wheeled and dealed,,,Certainly, not an associate's job.

HD was then too cheap to pay for an exterminator and i spent
endless time with my own alcohol and Q-tips trying to rid the plants of M.B.
The worst host-plants were the Bird of Paradise. Older dirty orchids were also terrible.
The MB "nested" in the cracks of axils where stems and leaves join and seemed to live on forever.

Many of the issues started with the plants themselves that came from FL. already infested.
They just 'cleaned them up" to look good and then packed them in the trucks.
One of the truck guys once told me that they grow the Bird of Paradise plants out in open fields.
He also said that, the tall B.O.P plants we get were only about 10 months old.
That really blew me away.

All I can say is--Thank God for Bell Nursery....Nowadays--everything looks great...

Mealies (shudder!) Have had them on coleus. Found them recently on small indoor kalanchoe- I took it outside to freeze, Not worth the hassle. The other kalanchoe so far is OK knock on wood.

Crozet, VA

A couple of years ago Holly gifted me with a Peace Plant which she said had mealy bugs. I don't recall doing much with it other than keeping it a safe distance from my other plants that particular summer when they all spent the summer outdoors. I am proud to say (knock on wood) that I haven't experienced any mealy bugs problems with it and for the first time since owning several Peace Plants, I now have one in bloom.....two blooms on the one that Holly gave me. It sure seems happy and I just had to snap a couple shots of it for you all this morning.

I also wanted to share a couple of Coleus who has been enjoying the brighter sun recently and have decided to give me a very pretty show. Donnerville, one photo was snapped of the larger of the two Lipstick plants you gave me. The smaller one actually bloomed last week, but the blooms are dead this morning. Didn't bother to show that here. Am proud of how well both Lipsticks did this winter for me though because last winter I killed the one you gave me.

Also another two Mulberry Jazz African Violets again from Donnerville. Last picture is of my front bay window this morning.

Another couple of shots taken this morning.....

When I gave that to you Ruby, I had taken the whole plant out of the pot and divided it washing off all the dirt from the roots and putting the whole thing in soapy dish water before re potting with new soil. Miracle it survived. I still wasn't sure it was completely clean of pests that is why you got the warning to watch it. I am so very glad it has done well for you.
