My mom used to use fish emulsion, so the stinky smell brings back happy memories of childhood....
Indoor plants at Mid At- continued Feb 2013
JBerger, that's too funny about the cats. There is a pretty large pack of semi-feral cats in my neighborhood (we have a cat lady). I can imagine they'd be all over my yard, looking for fish. They already spray all over my yard to mark their territory. Now only if they'd stick around to catch the squirrels...
Oh that is looking just beautiful. What a pretty clump of blooms.
If only it would not get ten feet tall I would like that...

Do you have a picture of the whole plant? What kind of a Begonia is it?
Without meaning to--I seem to be acquiring a few begonias....;o)
Sehr Schon!! Gita
Wow .you sure that is not a bean stalk? Beautiful!
Beautiful begonia!!! What variety is it?
Donner, I think this is the Bristol's Goose Egg? At least I am hoping it is. I sent it down to the GH a while ago thinking it was a goner but trying to give it one last chance before I tossed it.
I picked up this Mini Amaryllis from the HGHA Raffle Table. I thought it was a cute plant. It was one that went from the yard to the GH last fall. I was pleasantly surprised to see it getting ready to bloom. I see 2 blooms and I think maybe another one. The really fascinating thing about this plant is all the very tiny bulbs it is pushing out. They are all over the top of the pot. A few have rooted and are putting out very tiny leaves. They seem to come from the area between the larger bulbs not under the surface but at the top of the bulb where they are coming out of the soil. I gathered up a good 2 dozen of them and started 2 small pots with them.
Holly, the plant is fine if the photo is recent. The leaves are yellowing probably because the temperature is too low in the greenhouse, especially at night. Mine are all on the windowsill of the sun room behind the kitchen. It gets pretty cold there at night and some of my streps don't even look as happy as yours in the photo.
Move this strep inside the house and give it some good humidity. Maybe keep it in a clear plastic bag (no need to seal the bag) for a few weeks. It will recover before you know it.
Thanks Donner, It was looking really sad when I moved it to the GH and was so pleased to see it putting out a new leaf. Yes, I did take that pic this morning.
Here is a nice collection of Begonias from the Begonia Discussion Forum--These are by "flowerjunkie'....
Maybe some of us who have Begonias can ID them from this. I guess mine are too common....
Orchid--I also would like to know what the name of yours is. Danke!

orchid....
That is a fantastic room for plants!
Love all the windows and light!
Beautiful plants!

This is the sun room that was a green house 20 years ago, I needed to do upgrading and when I found out how much it was going to cost me for the upgrade I tore the green house down, gave all my orchids and plants to the National Zoo and built the sun room. We live in that room, have breakfast and dinner there , listen to music , have my computer and do some of my knitting there among the plants. What a way to go and I have a great view of my garden and the birds at the feeder.
I agree that really is a beautiful room. Ric and I will be heading down to the Md. Orchid Society Show next weekend. I got one there last year and it is getting ready to bloom any day now. I am looking forward to picking up another one or maybe even two.
HollyAnns: I will be going to the MD orchid society show too next week end I will refrain myself from getting another orchid.
I though maybe you might. Not sure which day we will go. Most likely Sunday but there is a slim possibility that we could go on Friday depending on which day we go the the Phila Flower show.
These Flower Shows are just wonderful and I have been picking up plants at all of them. At the York Flower Show I bought 2 new AV and on the way home we stopped at Lowes to pic up 2 pots and picked up 4 very nice succulents.
The AV are Bubble Gum and Zoe. I will see if I can get a couple of good pics of the succulents tomorrow. Also we buy plants from the displays and we go down after the show to pic them up when they do the tear down. I will post pics of them tomorrow.
Boy they are really beautiful. I am going to look for some of those at the Philly Show. I haven't found them for sale anywhere in my area. I know I can order on-line and may eventually do that.
We usually buy some plants at the end of the York Flower Show from the displays. I have gotten some very nice plants both indoor and outdoor plants at wholesale prices. We usually pick out what we want and pay for them then go back at the end of the show and pull them out of the displays. This year we again got quite a few very nice plants and I wanted to post a pic of the Tropical Anthurium we picked up. I have never been that interested in Anthurium until last year when we attended the Phila Flower Show. The theme was Hawaii and Anthurium was highly featured and I was just captivated by them. I have no idea what variety the are.
Beautiful!
They are beautiful. Mine lived a long life in the house, but, when I moved them to the greenhouse, they died. Figure that one out. LOL. I love them but never tried to propagate them, I just loved them for myself. Good luck with those beauties. Let me know how you do it?
I love Anthuriums and had a couple of them a while back. They got very big and bloomed a lot, However, the tips of the leaves had the tendency of turning brown. I was very careful with watering, but still it made no difference. I think the reason was the house was too dry in the winter time. They are happier sitting in humidity trays.
The greenhouse at my HD is VERY cool. I almost shiver walking through it.
Well, what would one expect--with glass all around? The heaters also don't work--
and the ceiling fans are old and rickety....IF they even run!
When I was working in this GH--one of the ceiling fans wobbled and made a weird sound.
I was expecting it to fall down one day. It still wobbles!
Anyway--the House plants and flowering plants seem to do OK in there.
I think most plants would rather be a bit cool than too warm.
Anthuriums--as far as I have observed, like it a bit cool but humid.
AND--those roots that are totally above the surface of the soil--that is normal.
They also do well when root bound.
Nice, easy plant if you learn to ignore it. G.
So I have been having a great time cleaning and re potting some of the house plants. I set up a humidity area. A pan with pea gravel with water in the bottom for some of the plant that like a bit more humidity. A dug out an old table top fountain which I set directly under the Pitcher Plant and Ric came home with an attractive green spray bottle that will hide in with the plants and having it handy will help me to remember to use it.
Very nice Holly!
The plants look very happy, Holly! This is so bright in the greenhouse. Nice!
Very pretty Holly. Love the orchids too.
No Donner, Not the GH those are sitting in front of the living room windows. We get a lot of light in that area, a result of the Passive Solar design.
The one that is blooming was a V-day present from Ric and the other is about to re-bloom for me. I picked it up last year at the MD. Orchid Society Show.
I have been growing and Adenium (Desert rose) for three years now, from a little baby Jill gave me. I think she grew it from seed. Its first summer it looked very promising, Last two summers have been shaky. Now it has a very very bad case of rot. I am going to take cuttings and try to root them.
Sorry Jill!
Sally,
I hope you have some success rooting the cuttings. Neat little bonsai plant.
Sally, I've heard that cinnamon works on rot on orchids and ee tubers, etc. Wonder if it would help Desert Rose?
LariAnn's article: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/858/
Interesting Judy - I'll have to remember that...however a plant stands to be in more trouble for lack of water in my house than anything else..LOL
Oh Holly - beautiful!! I've got the Orchid bug biting again as well. My p/t job had me down in Charlottesville this past weekend. This route literally has me driving past the driveway to an Orchid place that I love!! Heaven help me. I've set up the humidity thing as well - I have a tray with river rock and water but for the 4" pot I put it on an upside down shallow clay pot setting in one of those plastic saucers you put beneath plastic pots to catch extra water. The first pic with the white bloom is Cattleya walkeriana v. alba 'Pendentive' AM/AO (anyone know what those letters stand for?) which day time scent is similar to Tuberose (at least to me). The second pic is a Miltoniopsis that has a day time scent of lilac. Both have very strong (not over powering) scents that fill my small living room nicely w/their fragrance. Last pic is an African Violet that I picked up for a co-worker - isn't that bloom gorgeous? Almost lily like. I think I'm going to p/u the other one of these I saw and start some babies - propagating them doesn't appear too difficult.
Terp I took about eight pieces so chances are i will get at least one
Coleup thanks for the link. This rot is advanced and half the base is very soft and itis creeping up the stems.
Chantell such gorgeous flowers and scent too? Ahhhh!
Chantell... That Miltoniopsis is gorgeous!
Is the place you are referring to in Gordonsville perhaps? Floradise?
If so, I have always wanted to stop by there.
We pass it on the way to and from my Mom's.
I even wrote to her one time... she is very nice.
Karen
Have any of you in the northern VA area ever gone to Al's Orchid Greenhouse?
I drove up there last Fall.... kinda surprised me that it was his house....
But when I walked in the greenhouse.... WOW!!!!
He has some gorgeous stuff!
