Indoor plants at Mid At- continued Feb 2013

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Beautiful plants Chantell, I went with the big tray and fountain in hopes of helping the Pitcher Plant that is hanging over the fountain. It is slowly losing its pitchers the main part of the plant is looking good and I will give it a bit more time and to see what it does and then move it to the GH if need be.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--

I hope you let the Desert Rose cuttings heal over for a good day before potting them.
I know--YOU know to do this--but the succulent-type cuttings really need to scab over.

Good luck on them! G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Thanks Gita. I was nervous so i read up before cutting. I plan let them scab a coyple days even and on my warm plant shelf. Maybe this weekend cut into the mess left behind and see if anything at all might be saved. If cinnamon tratment can save a piece it could end up very unusual.

Benn meaning to tell how Rubys spider plant made me two new plant buddies. Two people so far that saw it in the cubicle have asked for babies!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I can provide you ALL the Spider babies you want---
I have 4 different pots of "fertile" spiders....couple different kinds...

Take a look.....G.

I'll be bringing most of my house plants with to Bama' especially my Sanses, the 'regular' ones will stay here :) then once I get a house, watch out!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

How are things going?

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Going great, exhausted from cleaning out the house yesterday and today, but - listing tonite/tomorrow and hoping we sell fast, another TH close by was on the market for 4 days and had 47 offers!! :)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Wow!!! Praying that is the same outcome for you!!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I've never had much luck with houseplants in the past - mostly due to my own neglect. This winter, I've made a point of looking after them, and I find myself constantly fiddling around with pots, locations, light, etc... I re-arranged yet again yesterday afternoon and I added to the collection with 2 streps and 3 african violets that I got at the Philadelphia Flower Show. Special on violets was $6.00 each if you bought 5 or more - so Jill and I got three each to get us over the 5 mark. Location as of today is on the antique sewing machine in the living room under a table top light set up. Streps are in pretty white pots, still need to find something a little more decorative for the african violets.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

aspinhill is hooked! No turning back now. DON'T YA LOVE IT!!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

anutha one bites the dust, heh he heh...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh Terri, I missed the Streps.... well maybe that was a good thing. I over did at the Orchid show I got 4 of them and Ric picked up a really pretty little one that he wants to mount on a piece of driftwood. Pictures will follow as soon as I can take them.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Sorry for delay - yes, Karen that is Floridise that is graciously accepting my monetary donations...sheesh. I've not been to Al's although I've thought about it since I'm up in Lovettesville each weekend. I wrote him and his response was rather ummm....extremely brief...almost curt. Not sure if he comes across that way in person or not but I guess it matter little if he has healthy plants that I'm looking for.

Holly - the use of the water fountain is an excellent idea...might even try that!!! How difficult is it to mount plants...more importantly keep the suckers alive once mounted?

One of the Walmarts Delmarva way - had a HUGE long table with all the plants 4" up to 3 gal size pots 50% off and 95% of them looked perfectly fine. See...this is NOT a good idea for me to come across in March when I've got spring fever. Sheesh...first I was running across the odd ball jades to incl the ones with color rimmed leaves - then the Hoyas - now the Orchids...so glad spring is right around the corner. Now I'm ISO of ginger for outside. I think I found one that does mail order with great prices - will let you know when/if I order.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I am sure you can find better instructions as we have never tried mounting them. But basically you find a nice branch, lay some moss of some type on it and then tie the plant to it. They grow very well that way as long as you spray or mist them often. Ric is going to wait till it is done blooming and then mount it and put it in the GH where it would be easy to care for. Guess we will read up on it pretty soon.

When do you start moving your indoor plants outside? Which ones do you start with?

I obviously won't be moving my succulents and tropicals out until the end of April, but I was thinking some of the hardier houseplants could start spending their days outside at the end of this month.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Terri,

I usually consider mother's day to be the last possible freeze. That being said we have been warming up and it may be sooner.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--

I have SO many houseplants that I cannot afford to move them in and out as the
weather changes. If you have a dozen or so--it may be doable. I may have about
60 or more--counting all my CC babies ans starts.

Our official frost free date is may 10th here. Yes, Paul is right, it IS around Mother's Day.

If I wanted to cheat a little, I would first put out those that are a bit hardy.
Like; Ivy, Oxalis, mature CC's, my 2 Epis (not moving them twice--too heavy!!!),
my Spider Plants (I have 5 HB's and 3 potted), Clivias, and maybe Swedish Ivy.

That leaves a bunch of other Houseplants, the Brugs, all my Begonias, smaller CC's, Easter cactus pots, etc.
My rooted Coleus cuttings, any veggies grown from seed and potted up, Tomatoes, etc..Can't think of them all.

I pretty much have all the locations for all these plants already in mind. Same old---Same old---
They don't change much--year to year. I just have more of them....:o)

The ones that never go outside are all my African Violets (many!) and, now, my Streps as well.
Then--my house will be orderly once more......

What Houseplants do you have, SS???

Gita

edited to say that 60 is way too low a number. I have so many little pots--everywhere!
I am sure I may have close to a hundred. Now you are going to make me count them all?????

I'm a bit north of you all but I use Mothers Day or very close to it. I think our official frost date is May 15th. Generally by Mothers Day we are good to go but there have been a few times that we had an unusual cold spell after.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Well, down here by the steamy Bay.. (haha) I wait till the trees have leafed out pretty well, which is during April. That way, I start them in the shade of the trees, and if a late frost, the trees canopy holds the chill off. But I start with the hardiest, like Gita said. The most tropical, I will do last.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh no, Jill - the night blooming jasmine you gave me started dropping yellow leaves. I remembered you said yours had gotten spider mites and a symptom was dropping yellow leaves. You know I don't know too much about plant care, so I googled spider mites - yep, mine has it too. I'm getting ready to take the plant up to the show and give it a thorough rinse and a little spray with my organic houseplant bug spray. The ehow notes said you could also use neem oil. I've heard you guys talk about neem oil before - where do you get it?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

You can buy neem concentrate at the big box, probably, or eel stocked nursery. Then you have to mix the spray. Copied/pasted a post of tapla into my blog years ago:

The residue is honeydew - the excreta from assorted pests - aphids, scale, whitefly, mealybug ...

I dose/spritz my plants 2 weeks before they come in, and again JUST before they come in with a mix of:

1 pint rubbing alcohol
1 pint very hot water
1 tsp pure, cold-pressed neem oil
3-4 drops Murphy's oil soap

Add neem & soap to hot water & shake well. Add alcohol. Spritz plants thoroughly, covering all surfaces - especially underside of leaves & leaf axils. Be sure to shake vigorously as you use the spritzer to keep the neem mixed with the solution. Works great - the neem oil renders all the insects it contacts unable to complete metamorphosis or reproduce, while the alcohol provides reasonable knock-down for current generations.

Average last frost date for my area is Apr 21-30.

Gita, I mostly have succulents, which need to wait as long as possible. But they're all in teeny tiny pots, so I would just need to bring them in if a sudden late freeze did happen. :)

At the end of this month, I was hoping to slowly bring out the plants that generally don't mind cool spring weather, like the lemon tree and the spider plant. I've had the bay tree (supposedly zone 8) outside almost all winter with no damage.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

thanks for reminding me my lemon is outside but needs to come in

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ss--

I have a small Sweet bay start I got from Jill. It has been sitting on top of my light rack by a S. window.
I think it has grown some new leaves--but SO slowly.

You say yours was outside all winter? How big is yours and where do you keep it?
This little plant I have is for my neighbor from Spain. I don't want to lose it. Any advice?

Also--If you put all your little succulents in a nursery tray--than you just grab the tray to bring them in or out.
I am sure you are already doing that---makes sense. I keep all my little, rooting CC's in trays by my front door.
All summer. They never get sun--just bright shade.

Chantell...

Al is a little man that comes across as very shy. My oldest girl and I were having a bit of a laugh at his expense.... 'cause I asked him a question and I thought he would fall through the floor... "Don't touch me... don't touch my plants... don't touch me.... don't touch my plants."

But his plants are truly gorgeous. He has a FB page, for those that do FB. He posts a lot of photos, especially of the orchids he offers.

LOL- but to read his FB posts he seemingly has quite the sense of humor...hmmmm

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, great idea about putting the tiny succulents in a nursery tray! I just brought them in two at a time last fall. :)

I got the sweet bay from someone who was moving across the country. It must be slow growing, because I know they had it for many years, but it's still only about 2 feet tall.

It's kept just outside of a sliding glass window and south-facing brick wall. The microclimate out there is pretty warm. I only brought it in for 3 nights, I think, when the nighttime temps dipped below 25.

Just marked this thread to watch.....for some months I haven't done much at Dave's and see that I have missed some excellent new topics. I hope in the next few days (weeks) to catch up and see what sorts of things I can learn from other plant lovers. A report on my house plants is that most have done well this winter despite being all mostly crowded in to one tiny room.....they are soon to be more crowded as I begin some seed starting soon and need the best of the rooms lighting for them. I look forward to reading what folks have shared and hope to see you all soon.

Wow, How truly beautiful. Love the collage, Ric got me a new Photo program for Christmas it has a Collage feature. I have had some fun playing with that.
So I have finally gotten around to getting some pics of the new Orchids. Have to go thru them and pick the best ones will post them as soon as possible.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Karen,
As always, the strep photos are wonderful. I think Gina is my favorite flower coloring combination so far...

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

I second that Terri!! Oh my my Gina.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hina's gorgeous, makes you think of an orchid with that coloration.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I stopped at a local nursery yesterday and picked up a beautiful houseplant not seen before. Flowers are huge. Check this one out:

Wow Terri! That really is a gorgeous plant!
How large was the one you bought?
It looks like it will be a large grower.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Terri, One of the vendors had a couple of them at the York Flower Show. I had never seen them before and it was just beautiful. Huge flowers.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)
