central, NJ(Zone 6b)

why do some people add an "R" to the word idea when they're saying it?

Thomaston, CT

That was part of my DH's VT-NH accent.....added or subtracted Rs.....

I've been told by two different sewing machine guys that my 20 yr old Bernette (I think it was $300) is a piece o crap and not worth fixing. Before that I had a hundred dollar Singer bought in the 80's , not working right. This is surely too not worth the repair bill, since new common machines with more stitches can be got for $150 dollars on sale.

Meanwhile I hauled out Mom's Singer, and another old black Singer, from the 1950s, and looked on eBay- BOth are being listed and sold in the 250- 500 dollar range. Built to last forever!

I have an extra Bernina record (from the 70's) sewing machine with every attachment made and a folding table that I need to rehome - if you are looking for a machine.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Nice of you to ask, YankeeCat. At the moment, I am going to put one of these Singers to use, and consider rehabbing/ selling the other. The second one was left under the steps when we bought this house. It weighs about 30 pounds.

I read a long article about the current state of sewing machine making industry- it sounds like anything being made NOW that is under several hundreds or thousands $, is a piece of disposable junk. But there seem to be crafters and seamstresses out there who will buy older quality machines.

Thomaston, CT

Wow....my Mom has a Singer from the 30s.......wonder if that's worth anything......

Robin, I easily came up with a website with a "field guide" to figure out the model number of mine. (sorry didn't bookmark..) Or google images, or ebay, if you can remember what it looks like. The Featherweight has a flip up part on the left and is smaller, comes in a black case. The 201-2 is a very heavy table top model.

the older machines are worth their weight in gold! they are made with metal parts, not many of the newer ones are- which is why they are junk.

Thomaston, CT

Thanks, Sally....I'll have to get the info off my mother's machine.....

I have no idea what my class ranking was, but teaching is different from hanging out at the student union playing bridge all day...oh, did I do that? College was definitely fun....teaching was nose to the grindstone!

If I were the Vatican chimney guy, I would send up grey smoke to freak everyone out.
