I'm getting very lazy! I always saved & started seed from a special variety of Polish tomato someone gave me, & huge plum tomatoes my Dad was given.....well, those went by the wayside many years ago!
Coffee Break # 91
another 75 days before i will begin starting any veggy seeds.
I used to have cold frames amateur set up and forgot to open them when it was important.I had also started seeds on a window sill and they were so lanky they keeled over when transplanted.
I applaud anyone who wants to deal with the process.
wish I had room, but you can start winter sowing now can't ya(milk jug method)?
I did my winter sow in December. Too cold and windy between now and March for me.
no winter sowing for me this year - i end up on some project and most of the little ones that germinate get forgotten and die of neglect.
I'm not very good at seed starting. So the only thing I do now is my celeric because it takes forever to grow! I let one over-winter this year hoping that it would self-seed. Heehee!
Too much of a pain for me. What you save in $ you more than make up for with time, effort and heartache.
The only seeds I start indoors are the ones you cannot find in nurseries around here, such as annual scabious....
For me its wintersown poppies and spring sown zinneas.
I gotta say I really like the new Garden Showcase feature

Well I am lucky to have a husband who made me a nice light in my spare bedroom. I've been doing it now for about three years. I enjoy watching something grow. I learned to cut way back though. My electric bill doubled last year due to the many lights I was using. This year I'm starting later and have hd no lights yet. My jan. electric usage is half from last year. Working with the plants help me feel better so I don't want to quit completely.
most annual seeds.. are worth growing.. rather than buying.. and yes Jen you can WS outside now.. I usually wait until it looks like the weather won't head back warm again.. should be in the clear now
I haven't been able to try wintersowing being down in FL all winter, so I am hoping to try it next year. Once you put the seeded milk carton out, do you have to do anything else with it until spring when it starts to warm up? I have seen Bill's results and that has made me anxious to try it.
with holes poked in top & bottom.. just take the top off when it warms up.. close it back up if it drops down again.. just keep an eye on the moisture.. doesn't really need anything until it warms up.. I found milk jugs that are frosty are better than soda bottles that are clear.. they don't dry up as fast.. or heat up as quick

Hm, Good to know!
oh I also add polymer gels to the mix.. soaks up extra moisture.. and helps keep moist longer.. the deeper the soil the better.. if it's too wet towards spring.. it will sink to the bottom.. and will help stay even longer
Thanks, Allison! Good to know! I love gardening with seeds. In fact, I plan to plant a large pot of green beans tomorrow. 😊
January 23: it's not just my birthday.....

Happy Pie Day Birthday, BA
Favorites are lemon maringue, key lime, apple and chocolate pudding. Never big on the other fruit ones. One to DIE for is sold locally. It is a peanut butter cream pie. If stranded on a desert island...Allison - the place you went to that time - The Orchards of Conklin - is the place.
Don't like Key Lime think it tastes like dish washing liquid.
Apple, blueberry, strawberry rhubarb, my step mil makes an awesome chocolate pudding one(don't know what she does different), lemon ice box, pecan
I'll try any pie once
So you've tried dish detergent. Which brand?
LOL, Victor! I was thinking the same thing, Jenn 👿
BA, Happy Birthday and be sure to eat one of each of your favorite pies today. ENJOY!
I am so thrilled to report that I just came in from planting 15 annuals! It feels so great to be able to do the things I love! If I am a teensy weensy bit tired, well....I would have been anyway! YAY! Normalcy has arrived.
LOL, it tastes the way dish detergent smells
great minds think alike Louise!!!
key lime is one of my fav's
jen you must have delious dish detergent!
Happy Birthday, BA!!! Have some apple pie left over, so will go have a piece in your honor. YAY!!!
Hooray for normal, DB!!!
Oh yes, Key Lime. Best frozen so far was from Marie Calander (sp?) Not overly sweet. Lemon Meringue is one of my favorites to make at home. Chocolate Cream Pie gets made with thick semi sweet pudding and whipped cream topping. I'm going to bake and break my diet right now!!!
Yeah me too, I need to go bake something....thanks.... you enablers!!!
