I did that, too until the contractor's plumber started messing up and he wouldn't take responsibility. Found out that the reason he uses that plumber is that he never took the plumbing job away cutting out the contractor's commission, not that he is so good. My new rule is never work with a friend's husband! It is scary trying to find, honest, competent trades people.
Coffee Break # 91
Angies List charges $30.00 to find good people and then who knows who has writtin the reviews.
We need to use some of our declining colleges to start Good Master Trade schools.that teach decent business practices.
Amen to the Master Trade Schools. I have been thinking about joining Angie's list.
I should have included Skilled to that. There is a desperate need for trades people with principals. It is one of the hardest job to maintain a home with contractors who never show up for bids on jobs and then take 3 times as long to complete because they are trying to handle 3 jobs at once.
Dont get me started.
Sounds like the same thing here....called the guy ( a friend of my son & DIL) who built their house, wanted him to replace 5 windows....that was in Sept. Can't paint the house til the windows are replaced.....I will call once more, then it's on to someone else.....
anyone can write a review on Angie's list, so if it's a bad contractor, he'll just have a bunch of his friends write him reviews
My computer crashed yesterday so couldn't get on line or print anything, was having withdrawals from not being able to "talk" to anyone
My usual computer guy was in Nicaragua on a missions trip, so had to call my back up guy, he didn't even charge me to fix it YAY!!!
Lucky!
I received a check in the mail today from the plumbing company that put the circulating pump in upside down for the full price of the pump. No note - just the money.
Not even an "I'm sorry"? Glad you got the full amount, though.
Was the check upside down???
LOL, Victor.
I told my sister and we figured out that the plumber doesn't know that the pump can have a back flow valve added to it - that is why he sent the full amount - to buy another pump.
rofl victor
I got ripped off on car towing last year, and asked another local car place Bradshaw's about how towing charges are figured or something, and told him my story- ended up with Mr Bradshaw getting Mr '"Ripoff" to give him $100 back to give me.
Victor, if you could bottle up your good humor, I would buy a few bottles to sprinkle in my house.
Hee hee - thanks, Rose!
glad you got your $ Memory
so happy to hear that Memory
Good to hear, Memory!
Money and no note is better than a note and no money. :) Glad it worked out for you!
True...I'll take the check anytime!
that was good of them memory
Yes, training and schools for Master Craftsmen in all the various trades, with a "Morals Class" as an absolute requirement. I would be willing to pay a bit more for a person with that listed on his/her credentials.
The Better Business Bureau-esque, but a set-up that PREVENTS problems, before they even occur !!!
Many years ago, an actress on a late-night talk show was having a large job done on her house, and repeatedly asked, "where do they go ?!?"
The work team would show up for 2 hours, and then leave for the rest of the day. The job took a rediculously long time to finish.
I guess you have to write a preventative into a written contract.
My "favorites" include: the inclement weather doesn't allow completion. Another one: a vital supply part is "suddenly not available, it has to be ordered, could take weeks."
Even if these are legitimate reasons, they can be anticipated, and explained. A modest inventory could eliminate the 2nd problem.
A simple contract could avoid these problems...if you could get a signature !

Anyone starting seeds indoors, hydroponically ?
Paper towels, coffee filters, etc. on a shallow water dish, really cheap process.
I did some lovely morning glories that way, years ago.
Almost a 100% germination rate, requires a full spectrum light bulb.
Common business practices course should take care of many problems.Legal help for contractors who have dishonest employes.ie Kids with summer jobs or youngsters, working for a year for a reputable contractor, works for a few Weeks, quits and sues for unemployment or starts his own business.
I have had some contractors who have been sorely used by employees.
I'm starting mine hypothetically.
Victor ! ! so clever at this early hour.
Hypothetical here too.
It's the coffee!
I find it the same way here and after an hour its all down hill for the rest of the day.
I see by the news Gatorade is being investigated for questionable ingredients.
Banned in Europe and some Asian country's.The aide contains fire retardant fluids.
Dual use!
Kept me out of the hospital! Must have had some powerful ingredient,,,,,,,The year that Garret married, I hired a painter to paint the upstairs as we were having out of state guests, & I wanted everything to be fresh....half way through the job, he tells me he's going in for a carpel tunnel op....like he didn't know this? I told him he better get someone to finish or I would sue....he sent his son, a really creepy looking individual.....I kept reminding him we had a nasty, bitey dog, not to open the back door...ever.....
Took them how long to finally admit the shots weren't working this year?
