Coffee break #90 welcoming 2013

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Sorry for your loss Robin

Victor you have to specifically request them(highly unlikely doctor's offices stock both types)
week 51 shows widespread outbreak of flu in majority of the states, still trying to find how many got the flu shot by state info

flu shot effectiveness is only 60% for all age groups combined, not great results, will never convince me to get one unless it's effectiveness is over 95%

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't think it's the same bulb, Allison. I will get the model.

Jen - if your pediatrician will not honor that request, dump them! As for effectiveness, not one of has ever gotten the flu when we got the shot. I prefer natural and homeopathic approaches too, but sometimes the pharmaceutical way is the best. As for treating the flu once you got it, I am telling you from personal experience that Tamiflu is a miracle. Used it twice. You have to remember how many people die from the flu each year. If your immune system is strong, sure you will eventually get over it, but will be quite sick for a while. Not fun.

Here's the one I was referring to.

the 9.99 ones were a 40W replacement.. put one in the bedroom already.. pretty nice.. I am not a bright light person believe it or not

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Pissed about the CF report - especially since I have been buying the daylight balanced ones recently. Really like the white light - in certain places. Great for reading and task lighting. Not for LR's or general lighting in bedrooms.

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Victor - I read some of the reviews on that bulb and it seems like there is some conflicting info on how hot they get. Some of the reviews said you shouldn't use them in an enclosed area. What do you think? Are they too hot to be used with a lamp shade?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Read the same thing this morning on a post by the science show host Ira Flatow. It surprises me. I would guess as long as nothing is real close it should be okay. The CFs bases get pretty hot too. Incandescents were crazy hot.

South Hamilton, MA

good, but confusing to those of us who aren't computer geeks.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Have not posted about it, but how horrific is that case of the brutal gang rape and death of the young woman in India? Shockingly brutal details and the worst offender is a minor who will get at most three years. Others will be hanged.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

The new Phillips LED bulbs are dimmable! Way too expensive, so except for a few spots, so I am shopping for incandescent bulbs whenever I find them on-sale. I found the CF bulbs made me jittery with their flickering light and the delay in warming up, so I discourage them in our house.

The hypocracy of banning the incandescent bulbs was clear to us when our kids were taking "honors" Earth Science. They were told to replace all of our bulbs with CF bulbs to be more energy efficient, and they got graded on our energy "footprint" but they were not taught the time old tradition of turning off lights you don't use. Never even mentioned it in class. There was absolutely no teaching them to think critically about how to solve energy problems.

Since our DS couldn't tolerate this, we pulled him down into regular science and together with another boy from Boy Scouts, they computed how the high school could save energy by using a heat exchanger and how much energy it saves. They got a very nice letter back from the building supervisor who said he had shared it with the designers of the town's new elementary schools. His reason--if it's clear to a kid, then the designers ought to see why to build this in new buildings. They did.

Good for you guys, Rose! Always like those willing to question the 'conventional wisdom'. On the CFs, they have gotten better. Hardly any flicker anymore, though they do take a bit to brighten as they warm. But they also have mercury!

Thomaston, CT

Thank you, friends for your kind sympathy. I want to keep my incandescent bulbs! Do not like the CF lights at all.....

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Me too Marilyn!!

South Hamilton, MA

Then the new bulbs are difficult toi get rid of. You can't just throw them out. We can take them to a place in town, but have to pay.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Yet another reason not to use CF bulbs.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

We bring them to our hazardous disposal place. No charge.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Has anyone heard about the movie based on Nancy Regan's life?

Al Gore is just being Al Gore - total hypocrite. No news there.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Time Warner wont carry the station.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

To boot, he tried very hard to consummate the deal before the new taxes kicked in.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Such as it is with power and money.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

So you have to make a special trip to get rid of a light bulb

pftttt, I put it in my regular trash, what are they going to do? throw me in jail

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Re CFLs. Well I have to question dose. They contain mercury. in minute amounts. My food contains salt, enough salt can be toxic.
Ok so I still recycle them. Lowes has a bin for them. Bag them first.
UV- ditto. How much? How much can a 40 w generate compared to the UV of sunlight? Really? Then we all want to go to the beach for vaca.

I agree the govt should not mandate the bulbs and the schools should not do dummy projects like that bulb replacement one.

Always got my flu shot.

Seems like someone could probably find an old sound bite of Gore calling Al Jezeera evil. lol.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't make a special trip just for one bulb! I save up all the stuff they take for months before I go - batteries, cf bulbs, regular fluorescents, paint, chemicals, pesticides, etc.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I t's an annual trip at this house.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

We love that cfl lasts so long in our outdoor doorway fixtures , because those you need a ladder to reach and change..

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

where do you keep all of the stuff you're saving up to bring?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Garage.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Basement and garage. We are a small gropu of 3 so dont use a lot of chems, bulbs, batteries. We have a weekly recycle that comes when the trash is picked up. ie ,paper, plastic, glass.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Truly astounding how many batteries you use in a year. I think throwaway ones should be phased out. All should be rechargeable. Same with non-recyclable plastic.
