Weather In Your Garden # 125

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

2-3 inches last I heard. At the supermarket, you would think it's the end of the world - again. What is with people??

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

hee hee and I sent hubby to the grocery store, we'll see what kind of mood he's in when he gets back

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

flowAjen, hope he has a sense of humor. Victor is so right.

We generally don't go to the store when we hear bad weather is coming and eat "Storm Stew" which is concoction of whatever we have in the pantry, freezer or frig. Some have been wonderful, others, not so good. But it is a great way to clear some shelves of odd ingredients. I must say we always do have rice, beans, tuna, peanut butter, red sauce, pasta and stock on head as well as lots of frozen garden veggies and proteins and a huge stash of bottled condiments and herbs and spices, so we are not ever going to starve. We have cooked many a meal out on the Weber in a raging storm when we had no power for days and we have used the fire place on occasion. In Vt we have a gas stove so we are never going to not have a way to cook here, plus we have a fireplace and wood stove for heat. I think some folks can't cook except in a microwave so they are in deep trouble without power. I love looking at what the panicked storm shoppers are buying. Carts are often full of horrible stuff. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, Patti! Was noticing that today. Weird junk - I guess comfort food.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Patti - how is your mom??

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

So right. Probably full of bad things all the time.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, Thanks, Mom is doing fine. She is Oklahoma, but planning a April barge trip in Holland to see the tulips. She has invited us, but not sure if we are going yet. It means missing some of our bulbs, but I think I might consent and join her as she is doing trip for us as she has done it before. She will be 98 in March.

She sounds great on the phone, better than me. She invited 6 over for Christmas day dinner at the restaurant where she lives and then up to her place for after dinner drinks and more sweets and to see her Christmas tree and decorations. She is a trooper but her tree is now a fake one. But at 97 she can do what ever suits her fancy. Here she was at the cottage in Canada last Aug. taking shots of the dogs playing in the rapids and of her enjoying the sunset on her deck. Like the queen, she usually has a purse, even when in the woods. Patti

Looking great, patti!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

She is truly amazing!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks, she smoked daily up to two packs from 17 to 80, and eats a regular diet that includes tons of bad stuff. Drinks lots of black coffee, imbibes in a bit of booze, white wine and adores dark chocolate. Her favorite thing is candied ginger especial when she can have preserved ginger marmalade on oat cakes. Processed and boxed, frozen or canned foods are all right up her ally. She eats a limited number of fresh fruits and veggies so it sure isn't her diet that keeps her going. Our grocery baskets are significantly different.

She reads, does crossword puzzles and just keeps busy. She travels because as she says, "I can". She is most happy when just cruising about looking at what is before her. Loves to people watch all over the world. She takes copious notes about everything especial her travels. She has her whole life on film, mostly slides since the 50's. She is an avid photographer as was her father, though now she only uses a little Canon digital camera as lugging her old Pentex with lenses was getting too much for her to enjoy. I guess working into her 80's has kept her going too. Good genes on her side of the family. Her only sibling is her baby sister in Calif who is 95. She isn't as mobile as Mom but pretty remarkable too. My dad died at 67 of Heart Attack so I hope I have hers. Patti

Wow. Harvest those genes for all of humankind!

The weather gave a real scare last night. DD2 was at boyfriend's house so I texted her that there was ice under the snow and on the roads so be careful and consider letting us know if her boyfriend's parents would just put her up for the night. Well she decided to stay, as one might expect. Then today, DS went to drive her and the drive train gave out. I am so glad a guy was holding the wheel and it was daylight. Just recovering my peace of mind since I felt all last night that something bad would happen. Now the guys are in the garage for a late night repair job.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Whoa - that is scary. Nothing worse than ice.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

does amaze me how people freak out with a little snow.. they are saying we might get 4 - 6

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

26° & mostly clouds. We are expecting snow in the 4-6" range. Recycling has just been picked up & the organic should be done by mid-morning.

Here's to the older generation for their tenacity. Thanks for your kind thoughts, Marilyn.

3 pm is when our next snowstorm is expected but only a few inches, then heavy snow after 5 pm and through the night. I like this better because it is giving a warning before it gets bad.. Today DD2 is iceskaking at Boston Common with a dozen friends.

I'm a country girl used to big Illinois winters and driving on slippery roads. Not the same here. Often there's less warning before the roads are bad. People don't know how to drive in the conditions, and our town is among the worst because it is so cosmopolitan, and the newcomers and the teens don't understand how roads change with the noreasters.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Steady snow. About an inch so far.

Thomaston, CT

Snow here as well....roads slippery...you're right, Rosemary, many folks don't slow down on snowy roads.....

South Hamilton, MA

snow is just starting here. Predictions vary on how much we will get.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

just starter here

Patti great shot of you mom!

Thomaston, CT

About 4" on the ground...a few more hours of, hopefully, lighter snow......

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Only about 2 here. Pretty much stopped. 29.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

snowed after 9am and turned quickly to slush

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Our storm is continuing, as it is supposed to snow into the morning hours. It's all white outside, but i doubt it's any more than half a foot deep yet. So far no power outages, knock on wood. So if the last storm was "Euclid" will this one be named Pascal?

South Hamilton, MA

rain has changed to light snow. We had a momentary power loss, but while the computer came back slowly, I think that it is ok. I had had it on 'sleep' not off. Better check the files.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

We got rain most of the day. Didn't start snowing till 9 p.m. or so. Now there's over an inch or so, and accumulating fast. Will be interesting to see how much we end up with.

Hamilton Beach Scoop.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that''s awesome Celeste!!!.. 29 now going to 30.. we ended up with around 5 inches

South Hamilton, MA

28° with the sun trying to break through the clouds. rain yesterday afternoon changing to snow about 9 pm. About 4" of snow & DH trying to get the car doors unstuck & crusted ice off the windows. Plow came about 6:45 so driveway is drivable.

Thomaston, CT

Temp is 25, but feels much colder as there is a nasty wind....hard to tell final amount of snow as drifting has occurred....my road is an icy mess, my driveway snowy....UGH! Pixie, the ice balls look very festive and cheery....Jo & Debi, too much snow for December....my niece drove from Pittsford yesterday, hit the storm, but she & Eric are safely here.....

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I was going to do those ice balls, was waiting for colder weather, I think it's here now. They look cool.
