Amaryllis

Lakeview, OH

No, this is the one that grew and bloomed.

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

oh, just curious about what ended up happening to the other one.

Lakeview, OH

Threw it away.

Lakeview, OH

This is the one that I got on Black Friday in 2013, I can not find out what the name is, it is beautiful but it would have been nice if it had been Apple Blossom like it was supposed to be. I got another one from a friend for Christmas and it also says Apple Blossom lets wait and see what color this one actually is. If there is anyone who can tell me what this one's name is I would be grateful. The second picture is a close up of the bloom, maybe that would help identify it.

The Amaryllis has finished blooming and I cut the stems down, the leaves were growing quite tall and now they have started drooping and turning brown and dying. Is that normal? I was wondering if I should just cut them and the neck off and repot them, do you think that would lhelp? They have enough water I just checked and watered them last night, bottom watered not top. Help!

Lakeview, OH

I just made a homemade contraption to help the amaryllis leaves stay as upright as possible, I took a dowel rod that I cut in half when the stems were growing and a wire coat hanger that my hubby cut in half and put them on opposite sides of the bulb and then tied a very soft tie around that and put two pieces of tape on the dowel rods (not touching the leaves) to keep it from slipping, I put the plant in the window and it layed down, it seems to like the flourescent lamp better, so this is what I came up with, tell me how you like my idea?

I would leave them on, as the plant might be drawing nutrients out and may even regrow the leaves. One of mine has done that before, but it has yet to bloom. I bought it as a bloomable bulb, but it grew thin tiny leaves, and no stalk. 3 years later it is a bulb smaller than a garlic bulb, which concerns me.

Lakeview, OH

I have had mine in the picture window since it started getting warmer and the one that has only the one leaf is growing another one! The other one is still alive, the leaves are not dying like they were before but they are not growing any more yet. I was doing what my hubby said, I was obsessing over them. So I look at them every once in awhile and water them when they need it, otherwise I leave them alone.

Lakeview, OH

I was wrong, it is growing 2 leaves! Here is the picture. It is still too cold at night to put them out to stay, so they are going to stay in the picture window.

The most vigorous bulb I have has 7 long leaves on it. It and the others are outside now, and have been for a while. The weather predicts lows to 39(F) and around there. Should I bring them inside?

Lakeview, OH

Here it is, another year has gone by and two more Amaryllis bulb kits from my hubby. One is supposed to be Apple Blossom, and the other is Star of Holland, I did something a little different, I mixed some potting soil with the coir disk, so will see how it works out, I promise I won't drive you crazy with the 'scape watch'. f forgot to tell you, I got FULL TIME!

Palmdale, CA(Zone 8a)

Mine are just dying down finally, which means I will expect blooms around Valentines day, which honestly I prefer this time. Maybe this year they will rebloom. All of them sit outside for spring and summer and still never bloom. Fertilizer is occasional

Lakeview, OH

Something different is happening to my apple blossom amaryllis, it is growing a couple of leaves outside rather than on the neck, there are also two leaves(I think) growing from the top. Here is the picture.

Your bulb has started growing some offsets! In a year or two you should be able to pick them off and pot them up, but since they are brand new I'd leave them alone for now.

Lakeview, OH

will they bloom this year or will it take awhile for them to grow big enough to bloom? I mean the baby of course, tee hee.

Lakeview, OH

This is the star of holland amaryllis that my hubby got me, it is not doing anything, the neck looks like it is sealed and I don't see how a leaf can get through. Would it hurt the plant if I tried to open it up a little more? I don't mean major surgery(tee hee), but just to give the leaves a little more room.

No surgery. When the bulb is ready to grow leaves they will be able to grow.
I doubt the baby will flower the first year. Give it time to grow in bulk, to save up some reserves of energy before expecting flowers.
As suggested above, leave it attached to the mother plant for a year or more before trying to detach it.

Lakeview, OH

I have fantastic news about the Star of Holland, it is growing two scapes at the same time!!!! I can see it without the flashlight now, and the baby apple blossom is growing about 3 or 4 leaves and a scape too at the same time. It is interesting to see it growing. I am glad you talked me out of surgery, it would have killed it and I would have been so sad. I have taken the clipping off the wall and have nothing on it maybe the white paint will reflect the light back on the plants and make them grow better. Picture 1. Star of Holland scapes,2. Apple Blossom scape,3.Apple Blossom leaves. The parent apple blossom is growing the scape, not the baby, but it is growing about 2 or 3 leaves at the same time!!!

I put my amaryllis to sleep for the next month and a half. I aim for a late flush before summer hits if possible. Kept the plants outside all summer with periodic fertilizing. The bulbs didn't look too big after bringing them in but I am keeping my head high. But on another note, my Christmas cactus decided to surprise me this year with a large flush of flowers. I didn't even change my care for them! Both are in full flower now, one is red with a white center, the other is white with a pink center. Will aim for pics doon. Glad to see you are having good luck with your bulbs!

Lakeview, OH

The amaryllis that is called Star of Holland is trying to drive me crazy! It is not very tall, and one of the scapes is open a little, don't know if it is going to bloom soon or not, it is still growing tall, and every day it opens a little more. No complaints though, if it is a short stem I don't have to worry about staking it so it won't fall over. I will post pics when they bloom.

Here is the Apple Blossom, as you can see it is opening up! Oh well, New Years blooms are just as stunning as Christmas blooms!

I picked up two bulbs today. Both are Red and White. I planted them and don't expect blooms to open for another month or so, but blooms at no particular time are better than none at all! I love the color on these. Both bulbs are dual-spiked and fat.

here it is!

Is it a good idea to let the amaryllis dry out a little before watering? How often should I really water it good? I have been filling up the bowl it is in about 1/2 way to the top, is that alright?

Lakeview, OH

I just found out something I had not noticed before, my amaryllis blossoms sparkle! I put a flashlight up to them and they do, they sparkle! I do not think I have ever had any that do that. Oh well, every day it is something new with these flowers.

Palmdale, CA(Zone 8a)

I noticed that flowers like Amaryllis, Day-lily, and some roses will sparkle like that. It is a sight to see!

Lakeview, OH

I had a amaryllis that had started to grow in the box, it was white and bent way over, I potted it up and this is what it looks like now, it is opening up. You can't see any color yet, but it will be exciting to watch unfold. So will postmore pics when it opens up enough to see color, I guess you can say that I am hooked on hippis!

Here is the one that was growing in the box. It shows pink inside, but not sure what it is going to be.

Can you tell me, do amaryllis have to go dormant? I would like to see if mine will rebloom this spring and/or summer. I have read that if you keep it in the bright light it will grow new scapes and leaves, a friend of mine his wife had one and she kept it indoors and it bloomed again. It had bloomed for Christmas and then she just left it where it was, watered it and it bloomed again. Is there a link someone can give me that will explain it to me? I would love to have these plants indoors all year round!

Palmdale, CA(Zone 8a)

They do not naturally require a dormancy period. But the dormancy period allows control over bloom time, so we often put the bulbs into dormancy

Lakeview, OH

Here is the second one that is blooming now, I think someone told me it was Mambo, but it is pretty.

The first amaryllis that bloomed around new years has 4 looooong leaves and it is the one that has the baby amaryllis with it, I just looked between the leaves and it has another one coming up! I could not believe my eyes, I never had one that did that before. There is another stem on the last one and it is really getting tall, and the one that my neighbor gave me, the leaves are growing great but the stem is not doing much of anything. These flowers never cease to amaze me, could the one that is growing in the middle be another scape or another leaf? the top looks rounded like a scape, so will have to wait and see.

Palmdale, CA(Zone 8a)

If it is coming from the center, it is likely to be a leaf. Scapes form on the outside sections of the neck and fatten up quickly. I bought a pair of bulbs recently, each with two scapes. They have started growing so I am excited to see the flowers!

Lakeview, OH

You are right Bloomfly, it is a leaf, which is exciting for me, usually at this time I put it into dormancy and wait until new growth. But since it is growing a new leaf I will just leave it where it is, I guess it is happy there.

Lakeview, OH

I have a new experiment going on, I got a mini-greenhouse starter kit for cactus, I only planted 2 seds in each small pot, I don't know what kind of cactus it is and so I did not plant all the seeds that way if these do not germinate, I will have some left in reserve for another try. I have the greenhouse fairly close to the flourescent lamp and are keeping it covered with the lid they provide. I also keep it moist, so here's hoping.

I am trying yet ANOTHER experiment, I took one of the amaryllis plants that have straight leaves and put it into the picture window, there is a lot of sun coming in there. I felt the window and it did not feel cold to me, so will leave it there and see what happens.

Lakeview, OH

It is April 18th, is it alright to put the Amaryllis out now? There are going to be a few days where the temps are going to be in the upper 50's and the nights in the 40's. I don't want to kill them but it would be nice to see them bloom whenever they want.

Palmdale, CA(Zone 8a)

Maybe start with setting them out for a few hours to adjust to the conditions. I did the same and am about to bring one inside as it set a spike! It also has 2 babies in the pot with it, one will be pulled this fall and the other next year. Excited to see the flowers, as it is the first bulb I have owned that has rebloomed for me. Another is setting seed this year since I pollinated it.

Lakeview, OH

I put all 4 Amaryllis pots outside and they are all growing! I don't think any of them are setting spikes, but this one looks like it might be, maybe you all can check it out for yourselves and tell me. If it is should I bring it in or just leave it out there? Here are the other plant.

At this time of year they should be growing leaves and storing up energy for blooming.
If yours has been treated to think it is a different time of year with chilling or day length manipulation then it could be flowering. But those look like flat leaves. Flowering stems are rounded.
