recieved my first 2013 seed catalog today - yikes!!
Coffee Break # 88 Christmas Countdown
Got one last week.
Marilyn, before my computer crashed, I had a lot of issues with it. It was the original hard drive that crashed. I had 2 hard drives in it. The second one had a lot more space on it. The original one was so overloaded with programs and different files. I got a new operating system installed in the second hard drive, as the original was pretty much dead. I also had them add more RAM (Random Access Memory) to it. With the fact that there's a lot more space on it, and more RAM, it now works much faster. Had a DVD-RW drive put in, also. Before it was just a CD drive, and I could not play or record DVDs on it.
Speaking of shoplifting, did anyone hear of that guy who was caught on security camera putting a pair of shoes in his pants? http://www.wptv.com/dpp/news/local_news/water_cooler/man-stuffs-shoes-down-pants-video-police-trying-to-find-a-suspected-shoplifter

Yep....saw that on TV.
This is a true story.
My SIL and his brother are 7th generation Pipe Organ Builders. This is Christmas organ tuning time of year and SIL is gone every week for 4 days tuning organs.
SIL is gone this week to tune organs and will be out in the surrounding territory until Wed.
His office called him to say "Dont go to your Wednesday Appointment. The organist's husband shot her" " Its a murder scene"

oh geez
I heard about that.
Victor ! where was it ? DD didnt say where SIL was supposed to be on Wed.
I guess I don't see the humor in anyone losing their life. It's just sad .
You are right Pixie.
I miss spoke and will just ad that the humor was the typical way SIL delivers shocking news. His opener on the phone was WOAH .
That was the only funny part.
Think I'll edit now.
On a lighter side!!
I saw this on CBS Sunday.
All made with PVC pipe and I think I saw a cable tie or 2.
This artist is dutch engineer and mathematician.

Jo, you need not edit on my account, im sorry. I am a little sensitive still about death. As the sister left behind, my first thought was for the family and the holidays coming. I know how hard I am struggling with Christmas spirit but making a valiant effort every single morning as some people can tell by my facebook post.
Those wind driven kenetics arent necessarily new.Remember the mailbox whimseys of the 40's and 50's?
This is neat and contemporary

The whimsey we had on Grandmothers mail box was a lumberjack sawing wood.
i like kenetic sculptures - another is on my x-mass list
an elderly neighbor down the street has two very large one's and i would love to know where they got them. don't know them and have been tempted to knock on there door. have been looking at them for over 10 years and these folks will not be around forever.
Bill : Can you google ?Thats where I found some. Years back there was a couple who designed more complex ones that wee fascinating.Very expensive but thats probably why I cant find them now.
The has a lobster that had all the teeeny legs move .As you know it's cams and gears that make them go in the wind.
Kinetic garden art is not the same as Whirly gigs

I like kinetic stuff too. Primarily metal.
Me too. There are some wonderful ones.
Yes, I love kinectic sculpture! Whirligigs, too...had a Canada goose on my fence at one time....
The whillrgigs always fascinated me as a child.
in the past i have googled kenetic wind sculptures and did not find much. have seen some in rockport, ma art studio's that would require home equity loans. would love to find one that used japanese maple leafs to collect the wind - the artist does to commission work and could build one using real leaves dipped in metal - unfortunately i did not win the powerball lottery to warrant looking into to it more.
victor i have the same one you have that i saw at soj's home - it was a windy day and her's was spinning like and airplane propellor - mine never has not come close to that - her husband spent a lot of time playing with it until it caught the wind - next windy day i might go out there and start bending it a bit to find the right setting.
Mine spins very freely. Took my time when I first got it to bend each blade individually and have never had a problem.
Ohhhh yes,the cost. It's beyond my allowance.
Sigh...mine, too!
Wind and weather have some. I am getting DH one for Christmas.
look for a coupon on line debi - wind and weather and plow and hearth are the same company - if w&w doesn't offer a coupon look at p&h for the same thing - we got 20% off.
How horrible about that murder! Reminds me of a terrible accident that happened at a church in Florida. Might have mentioned it here before, but not sure. I have a friend who has a brother who is a minister at a church in Florida. Forget which town. Anyhow, his daughter was shot and killed by accident in the church. Turned out there was a gun in a closet there, and someone wanted to see it (not kids). While it was being shown to him it accidentally went off, and the bullet went through the wall and killed her. Really awful.
WOW!!!! That Theo Jansen sculpture is amazing! Love the music they chose to go with it, too. Very appropriate, I thought.
Jo, I love the cat and dog balancing garden stake. That would be so neat to have in the garden.
I remember there was a kinetic sculpture in that movie Twister. Or was it just a complicated whirligig? I would love to have one like that!
Well, when you do win the lottery, Bill, I know what you'll be getting!
Karen
Bill, where would one find a coupon like that?
Karen
Another place to admire is the Hotchkiss Mobiles Gallery 8 Center St West Stockbridge MA phone 413-232-0200. I wasn't able to open their website tonight. They have kinetic garden sculptures outside as you walk into the cafe. Very intricate movements.
I am drooling over the Stanwood imports kinetic copper wind sculptures, especially the dual octopus and the dual dancing willow. They were on the side in the last link on utube. Course it would be fun to set a strand animal loose too :)
My friend's son is doing sculptural welding through a Somerville MA welding club so he can learn mad art skills while he is otherwise underemployed. He showed us his first sculptures which were stationary. Maybe I should commission one from him since I really would love a kinetic sculpture, and he needs orders to get him started.
If he is good, I might too, Rose.
Thanks, Victor.
Karen
I'll let you know but he and his sister are both wonderful artists and his early metal sculptures--a bird and a huge fish-- do have charm. He apprenticed in sculpture with the chair of the art department at Gettysburg college this summer. He is still trying to decide whether to go to medical school, so now is the open time window. When i hinted about hiring him, he said he was open to the idea, but I have no idea what to offer or how he might charge. He showed me websites of some of the master sculptors he admires, and they charge the price of a house for their amazing creations.
Thanks Bill
Hi Debi !
Mornin Jo
rosemary there is another art studio in jamaca plain that does welding art sculptures that i saw a while back on Chronicle that were fantastic - they did have kenetic art being built there too - of course i would not shock me if i am confused and it is the somerville place although i am pretty sure it is in jp.
your welcome debi - should be able to get the 20% off and maybe free shipping - cindy did - and the box arrived yesterday, i left it out on the driveway so she will think i do not know it is here :)
I'm in West Stockbridge every Aug. when I'm driving up to Pittsford...haven't noticed the sculptures, but I will look for them next time.....
Bill, you are too funny!
I should add that I did bring in a package from Sierra Trading Post that is for her that she knows nothing about :)
