((((Joyce)))) Those anniversary dates are so very hard. Sending hugs

JOYCE, sending hugs my friend..know this is a hard day for you...here's hoping the granddaughters will be around to make you smile..bet if you go into the garden there will be an unexpected bloom that your mom has sent saying she and your dad are holding hands and want to thank you for your care! Gee you even have me crying..
Yes you do have a long table..sat at it a few times..Hmmmm
Love that runner Betty. No long table here!
Thanks for the prayers everyone!
Cookie, sending you lots of thoughts and prayers too, to help you through the day! My Mom passed 6 years ago, and I still have my days that are hard to get through.
Cookie, the good stuff is a staple here! LOL Enjoy the cake.
I agree with the others, days like today are rough..they improve with years BUT never, ever go away. This is my rough time of year also. Sending hugs to you and LK.
I'm at 21 yrs and still hard days, normally main celebrations but it gets easier to remember the good times!
Almost done the 2nd top and thought I made it much shorter but didn't lol
My Mom passed away January 1990.....I still miss her as much....just not as often. Good thoughts to you Joyce.
Hope everyone has a gentle day....it is 10 degrees cooler today than at this time yesterday....Oh My...a Fall preview???
Think a lot of us are in the same place..mine is Christmas/New Years seeing Roger passed on New Years Day! drats..
Only alcohol I have here is Rye/vodka that I bought for when the sistah's were visiting and it's still left..maybe I can ask around and trade enough for use in the cake..
One little old lady sure can make a mess when she decides to stay in her jammies and just play.
Did however go look outside, maybe I could cut grass but its much to wet and it's damp so I'll continue to play
Sorry to hear of your loss as well Jean.... right around the time Roger died!
How old was your mom..Roger was 47..heart pounding when I think my boys will in a few years be around same age..I didn't realize just how young Roger was until I see my boys and think Lordy they are just young men with entire lives ahead of them, Lord willing.
Bet you are enjoying the 10 degree difference
My Mom died from complications from an aortic aneurysm just before her 68th birthday...My Dad passed away New Year's day 1988 at 67. (1 year and 2 days before my Mom).....
Everything out there is enjoying the cooler weather....Grin
What a tremendous loss..both so very young.
My sister just called, she works Sundays' at hospice. Said an elderly gentleman who can only speak French has little time left. On the bedside cupboard is his wife's photo. Sharon couldn't figure out why he had my grandmother's photo there...nope..they would indeed pass for twins. I went into my picture tote and searched for photo's to send her so she can show him, only took me seconds to find a few because I wasn't ready for all the memories that little old box holds ..not today
So tired, first time on the computer today and it's 11:45pm...
Anniversaries of passings are never easy. My dad passed away 32 years ago at Christmastime and it wasn't until 2 years ago that Christmas didn't Hurt the way it used to. July 22nd would have been his 110th birthday....... yes, he was born in 1902. I was the youngest of his 2nd marriage.
Went to service this am, then was up on the roof this aft, helping by pulling nails, tearing up shingles and roofing paper... preparatory to putting new paper and shingles up Big wind storm hit, and almost blew Bob & I over. Did blow a piece of sheet tin into our neighbour's yard. Dented it a bit, so it's garbage. I was so shaky and glad to get down. Then I made dinner, and vegged out. Only reason I got on the computer is because Bob needed some answers re: his RP game on his system...
Good night all...
Good morning, not yet daybreak so no telling what the weather will be like, but do feel fall so will have to dress for it!
Everything is so still in the house as I sit and have my coffee, eerie kind of silence.
Talk about a sewing day yesterday, was up hours before dawn, started to sew and it wasn't until nightime that I called it a day. Just everything went into place so figured why stop now. Only break I had was when Kyle came to visit..
Managed to get 4 table runners sewn, perhaps in the evenings rather than lay on the couch I'll quilt them..
Spoke to my girlfriend Marg, she was such a hard working volunteer, actually ran circles around all the others, wasn't a committee she wasn't on..she will come for a visit and spend the weekend..weekends few to have visitors but we picked Meaford weekend so that she can come with us the the Applefest.
Then spoke to Mom, since her fall she hasn't been feeling the best. She wants to go to Buffalo so on the 19th of October it will be..not sure if Jim will join us or not.
Got to tell you for the next few months I'm committee to activites/events or away from home..
Susan, omg girl do you not know how dangerous it is to be up on that roof..know you do and know you are pressed for time for what a fall you could have had in those winds. Sounds like you are almost rebuilding an entire new home.
Didn't see anyone on the thread yesterday, you must have all been busy/busy...care to share how your day went?
Betty, I'd be happy if I had the talent you have in just your little finger! Gosh, those are beautiful...see that Missy is still keeping you company.
Bella came and sat with me on the swing this morning in Dad's place. She's been doing that almost every day. Maybe he sent her to me....
Yesterday was a fun day for me. Bill and I took a Sunday ride..to a nursery where I was going to get a tree for Bertie's BD (9/30)....alas...sold both of them last week. So, I came home with two new hydrangeas for me!!! Pinky Winky and Quickfire. Well, they were 25% off!!!! LOL...also got a couple of stepping stones that were cheap. This nursery is way out in nowhere and next year they are downsizing. I don't think they're doing very well. Their stuff looks healthy enough, just not very much of it. I guess Sue is giving up her nursery as well. At least that's the last I heard from her. She's working in apples now.
On our ride yesterday we stopped at a little apple place and I got some Cortland and Macintosh and made Bill an apple pie last night...oh my it is so good. That won't last long! ^_^ I made some home made au gratin potatoes with ham, too. That was for me! I love that. In fact, I think I'll go have some for breakfast!!!! :o)
Oh Cookie, may I have a serving of the au gratin potatoes with ham too, please? I love that!!!! On our no no list now as Kim can't have or won't eat potatoes much any more. Watching her sugar very closely!! Apple pie, oh my, some of that also. You are making me hungry all over again and my bowl of cereal is not making me happy now. :-(
Puttered around the house most of the day yesterday. Did go over to my son's house later in the day to take something I had found for the girls.
Had to do a walking, guided tour of the yard with the youngest. Very entertaining! She informed me and Kim that when the pecans start to fall we have to come help her pick them up. Not a problem if my DIL will make me a pecan pie......don't know what she does differently from me but she makes about the best pecan pie I have ever tasted!!!!!
Just a quiet, lazy day with much cooler temps for a change. Really nice this morning..about time to open the windows at night. Ahhhh.............
Not much here either, I spent a lot of the day at the neighbors, as her son left for boot camp for the Army! He graduated school a few years ago, and was really trying to find a job/career here, but our town is so small, there are no jobs to be had. So he decided to join the Army! My neighbor cried so hard after he left, so we sat and talked for a long time!
Dianne, are we going to have our Christmas swap again this year?
Sunshine day here, even with Paul in lol
Joyce, pass the apple pie please!!!
I'm sure Bella is missing your dad as well sits with you for comforting...oh nothing like going shopping for someone else and buying yourself something lol You deserve a treat...
Marion, those little ones sure warms the heart don't they. All the times I've been in Florida and eaten pecans, not sure I ever saw the trees..will have to be on the lookout this year. Am sure your pie is just as good, it's always better when someone else makes them.
LindaKay, am sure you were a great comfort to your neighbor. Must be overwhelming to see them go off even if it's for training right now.
Betty - I have been on roofs before, but not for many-a-year........ and I was having panic attacks (chest pains) which I didn't tell Bob about until afterwards. He didn't pay much attention to that (he thinks I'm silly....), but he was worried while I was on the roof, and helped me get up when my knees wouldn't "behave".
We ARE almost re-building this side - at least 17ft worth of wall, and same of roof....... it's quite the big job.
Here's some of the work-in-progress
#1 is some wall installed
#2 is more of same
#3 shows cedar post on the left, for the overhang
#4 shows 2 of the cedar posts Bob got at a work - home reno
#5 shows the joists for the overhang - from back of the deck, past the entrance, and you can't see it - but carries to the front for the gate and steps to the deck
Did you have an overhand before or is this new..you'll enjoy it, keeps snow/rain away from your door.
With 4 ft you could cover with heavy plastic (same as what they put over insulation before the drywall) and will save you shovelling...yikes, after typing all of that it dawned on me, you don't get a lot of snow, so no need..lol
AGAIN, you should not have been up on that roof..got to tell you I'm terrified of heights
Wow those posts are huge!
Good thing it's a one story........
Once Bob puts the plywood down, I'm not sure what he'll put for vapour barrier.
We DO get huge snowfalls at times, and if Bob hadn't repaired this, the ceiling would have collapsed at his desk, during the first big snowfall. We get about 2 weeks of heavy snow (really heavy) and although it doesn't last it's enough to break several trees and limbs both. It's really "snowball" snow and rather wet. Winter is usually wet snow time.
My cousin just emailed and said they would help with the fix. So, tomorrow evening..... Bob & I are both out tonight - he with Bowling league and me at the church Board Meeting. I'm really pleased they will help. She said they would, but I wasn't sure they meant it.
They are big - good "tree hugger" big........ I wrap my arms around and grasp my forearm.....
Betty - no, we didn't have an overhang before. Good thing the deck is so big - 16x19' - so it will take the extra size of the posts.
Nice work Susan! Does your city require any type of building permits where you live?
Been sitting here looking at local quilt/fabric shops for a 10" 1/2 hexagon template..only place that I can get one is in USA, imagine $8.98 and shipping $15 and change...so nope, sitting here drawing it on paper, will get it to the glass and mirror place and have them cut me from my design a template..
always looking for something for a 1day workshop at Christmas time so will do an easy project for them this year!
repairing the walls and roof would not, but never thought about the overhang....... as it's only 4 (4 1/2?) ft wide I shouldn't imagine we would need permits - there's no walls to it, only 2 cedar posts.
Good plan, Betty! I would never have thought of the glass & mirror place for cutting a template, but as they're exacting that sounds like a good idea!!
Thats what DH and I will face this fall.. Our house is 3 1/2 stories high....with the old fashioned very high peak roof, and we need to paint and do a few repairs.
This is the 4th time in 22 years.
That sounds about right, Debbie. We all know a home isn't maintenance free LOL
Would be nice if it were..........
3 1/2 stories, eh? Are you hiring someone, or doing it yourself?
Wow Debbie, surely with Paul's sore legs and you not feeling well it will be quite an endeavour..do you think the SIL's could come to help? How is Izzy today, any better...you weren't feeling the best, did resting help any?
Okay, got the stuff to make Chocolate Kahlua Cake to take to the Hosta Society carry-in tomorrow night. Can't wait to try it!
No resting last night. Izzy is up and down all night, decided we are pulling the crate out and putting her in it. She has started barking every couple minutes. No needs, tried everything. We thought putting it in front hall way (our bedroom directly overhead) would maybe help more if she heard me. She hasn't been crated in a few years so not sure how this is going to go.
Possibly going to run into the doctors tomorrow if not feeling better. I can't sit...stand...lay...and it is so uncomfortable. With my lack of feeling...going in and get a check make sure I don't have kidney infection.
Paul and I have always done it alone except one year a co-worker came out and helped. Joe is on the road almost all the time, and Andy works two jobs as it is from dawn til late hours. SO, not so sure about that...but offered whenever he could he will.
Oh Cookie, watch the older (oops...I'M in that group now). I took one to a garden club meeting when I was still in Gainesville. It was for a covered dish luncheon but it never made it from the kitchen to the serving table. The circle who was hostessing keep "sampling" trying to decide if it was rum or what......long story, short version. Ate it all!
When making that cake, does the alcohol get cooked away/absorbed so you don't get an effect? Reason asking...many people are on meds that
you can not have alcohol with.
The amount you put into the cake batter that is baked would lost it's effect; however, there is about 1/2 +/- in the glaze that goes on top that is not cooked. If you are sensitive to alcohol, yes you might get a "buzz".
Please do not think me a prude for mentioning this.....but I think you should post a little "heads up" to those who will eat it. NOT only for those
that could have a medical issue but also if someone was/is an alcoholic. You never really know....I have an inlaw we have to make sure we notify
if there is alcohol in anything. (like my shrimp scampi).
Debbie, sorry to hear both you and Izzy are under the weather. Glad you are thinking of going to the doctor's as a precaution..with lack of feeling it could really mask something that needs to be addressed asap..dangerous if there is an infection and you are not being medicated for. Pointing my finger, you know, same way as you point at me.
Is Izzy still suffering from ear infection do you think?
You'd have to think twice wouldn't you about taking on the painting this fall with not feeling well. If I wasn't so afraid of heights I'd offer to come and help out...
Somebody here's birthday tomorrow, will she be eating the chocolate cake???
Just asked Suzanne about the Kaluah..she'll check tonight to see if she has any
Debbie, I have always cut it in very small sizes because of that and definitely tell people that it is NOT a cake for children. I wrap mine in saran wrap and you can smell it when it is time to take the wrap off to serve. However, it is a good idea to let people know and no, I don't think you a prude. Isn't the shrimp scampi cooked? If so then there shouldn't be a problem as the heat will destroy the alcohol and only the taste remains...no buzz quality. It is the glaze that has it but then if you use some of the better vanillas they have just as much alcohol in them.
Yes, shrimp scamp is cooked...but tasting the alcohol can make them crave the taste and "relapse". It would not "physically" affect him....but mentally it
can cause a craving with the smell and taste.
Marion, does the 6 tablespoons of Kalua for the top of the cake come out of the 3/4 cup or is it over and above???
I agree. Most times I know the people who are going to be eating the cake and never, ever took another one to a garden club luncheon.
No, it is in addition to the 3/4 cup in the cake batter. You mix the 6 TBS with the cup of sifter confectioner's sugar and drizzle over the cake while in the pan. Let it sit for 2 hours before removing.
Over and above!
