Went to the feed store yesterday and a man walked in with a horse...well, a mastiff....he called it an American mastiff, cross between a Neopolitan & an English.....what a bark! Also he put his head in a basket of chews next to my elbow, & I pulled the basket away from him...then I thought, "Wow, that was stupid!" The owner had little control over him.....

I bet the mastiff didn't much about it except slobber on you. I've always been more wary of little dogs than big dogs. Big dogs know they're big and don't feel they have to prove how tough they are. I suspect that my dog gets his brindle from some mastiff in him.
American Mastiffs don't drool...that mess was bred out of them...I was looking into getting one of those but can't afford them, they are AWESOME dogs, easily trained and LOVES kids....any size dog needs to be trained properly...
Right....the owner said this mastiff didn't drool....he did have smaller jowls than other mastiffs...however, he was rather intimidating, and he doesn't like the feed store owners labs, so they had to be put in a back room.....his coat was a lovely brindle.....
As long as you don't get a Bull mastiff which are very agressive. I had one pull my cocker spaniel out of my arms at a dog show (lucky for cocker's heavy coat.) At an earlier show I show one attack an English sheepdog which was standing on his crate being groomed. Again a heavy coat saved him.
Very intimidating! have you ever met a Cane Corso? talk about intimidating!!!!!
Glad you told me about the bullmastiffs, Iris....I'll avoid them! The only Cane Corso I saw was a puppy....at the same feed store....he was very pretty, but I know they have a history of aggression....
that might work Jen.. I was even thinking of running twine .. but that plastic chicken wire.. we might even have
Xenspirit, Buddy and the GP are adorable. I have a soft spot for GP's, as I've raised them. They are such great pets. While looking at the link to those videos you posted, I came across this one that I thought was quite hilarious: http://youtu.be/y2-IzikIE8s
Ronnie, Winston is growing big quickly, as they do. He's looking great! Yup, destructive puppy stuff. Still dealing with that with Jerry. I keep hoping he'll grow out of it soon. I see you're dealing with it, too, Celeste. Glad I'm not the only one!
OMG, Jen, your friend's Basset is adorable!
I saw an enormous Newfoundland today while I was out and about. Beautiful dog.
I looked up that American Mastiff and the Cane Corso. Impressive dogs.

Look up Zorba a mastiff.
* Weight: 343 pounds
* Height: 37 inches at the shoulder
* Length: 8 feet, 3 inches long
This site shows some pictures of him.

The last picture is a fake, but the ones near the top show Zorba
Wow....like having a pony in the house....my wolfie was big enough at 120 lbs. Her tail would hit the dryer in the laundry room & sound like a drum....plus her nose was table & counter height....she was very good, however, at not touching things.....
I love Mastiffs! Almost had one before our Danes but Lou isn't to keen on the slobber. I didn't know the American one didn't drool.
We met a Cane Corso at a dog show, the sweetest thing ever, there were kids climbing all over her.
Yes, depends on the individual dog.....my 1st 2 dales loved people, hated dogs....Robin hated people, loved dogs.....
Here are the original breeders of the American Mastiff, when I was looking they were only 1 of 2 breeders, now there is a list

The one I saw had a lovely brindle coat....he didn't seem as friendly as those in the photos!
Dear Bunny....yes, there is a dog in this fenced in yard which you have tunneled into....yes, she's a hunter & will chase you every day until she catches you! What is a bunny's IQ? Stay in your wild, tangled thickets...there's nothing in my yard for bunnies!!!
We have a resident bunny in the back yard, and the dog chases it but never catches it. We get babies every year, and those she has gotten a few times. You'd think the bunny would eventually go away, but it's been 3 years now.
Bear chased a bunny once. The bunny ran under a low limb on a tree and Bear ran straight into the limb. So much for that bunny chase.
The deal with rabbits is this.
Two rabbits are being chased by a fox. They stop on a hill to take a breather. One asks the other. "Should we stay and out breed them or should we try to out run them? We'd better start running because you are my brother"
Another interesting thing is. We had some wild rabbits that had crossed with white New Zealands. It only took a couple of years for them to all disappear because they were far too easy to spot from a distance.
I don't know if this is one bunny or many coming through the fence.....but I don't want bunny parts littering my lawn!
Our late Sabrina ate a whole nest of them one summer, swallowed them whole.
I'd rather Wall-e swallow them whole, I hate finding parts
Oh, no.....
I think I would rather have found the parts, I saw it happen and it was so fast there wasn't a thing I could do :(
If I find a nest in one of my containers I try and get it out before the babies are born. Not sure how Harper would be with them.
Doug, I had found that info on Zorba when I was looking up mastiffs. I had also come across a video on youtube explaining that picture that is a fake, and how it was made, etc. Interesting. The drool factor from a dog like that would keep me from wanting to have one.
Those American Mastiffs are beautiful, and if I had the money and the time, I would have a giant breed like that. Just gorgeous! I can imagine the vet bills, and the food, etc.
We get bunnies here all the time, too, even though Patches invariably gets some of the babies every year.
Karen
The bunnies are all over this year! They have started coming to my deck where I grow the garden stuff. Cliffie must like his dogfood too much because he's stopped eating them. I think he's preoccupied, knowing the kids are going to leave our nest.
they look so nice!!
Such a pretty girl, & I love the dress! Poor Cliffie.....he wanted to go, too!
Thanks. Cliffie will be even more left out when his mistress leaves him for Oberlin College in August.
Yes, hard on dogs when kids leave....maybe Cliffie can visit.....
Cats also. When GD comes home one of the house cats sticks with her.
I had one affectionate cat, Pip, a 1/2 Maine Coon......he loved people....
mona becomes 'velcro kitty' when DD comes home.
so funny Michele called Riley "velcro dog" tonight.. he won't stop touching me this visit
Nice pics, Rosemary. Cliffie and your daughter look great. Sad and exciting to watch the kids grow up.
I was at a friend's house today, and her cat got right up on my chest while I was sitting in the easy chair and wanting to suck my neck. Kept tickling me. Very affectionate. I had a cat like that. I had raised him and his sister on a bottle from the time they had just opened their eyes. He was the sweetest cat. His sister was sweet as well, but more easily frightened by things.
Karen
Thanks Karen.
I had a cat that would jump onto my shoulder from on top of the fridge. Her "child" ran away from home when I went to college, but when I lived at home again for a few months, and she came back to live with us again. Furry indifference has not been my experience.
Oh, hard to believe Mr. G will be 3!
Salt Lake city has a problem http://now.msn.com/now/0620-voles-take-over.aspx So where are their cats? Holly's personal best for one day is 5 vols!
