Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Chatting with friends...

mulege, Mexico

We have to rebuild the awning-type shade thing on the east side of my house. We also have a few shelves to finish and a couple of molds to bild.

My property was almost all brown when I moved in. The owner had been dead for about ten years and we bought from his daughter who never did anything with it. A flame tree and a couple of other trees came back when they were watered. There was one lime tree but we have put in all the oranges, grapefruit, lemons and other plants. Am looking at seeds for a couple of new food plants.

I agree, I am totally lucky to have Tony. Even better (maybe) is that feels the same way about me. We both appreciate each other a lot and I don't think you can ask for more in a relationship.

katie

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sounds like you have done a lot to your place Katie?

Betty, don't forget to feed the pooches!

Baton Rouge, LA

Hello To All !

Oh Debbie ! So glad Shane is right back at work...Is this at the country club or a new job ?
Susan - Just Saturday and Sunday off this week.... but I had to work the last 2 Saturdays so Thankful for that.... Very interesting you and Katie's Quinoa cake recipe... Since I've tried to lose some weight for the trip I've read a bit about Quinoa and seems it is better for you than regular grains
Wow Katie you've sure done a lot to the place since you've had it....
((HUGS)) Dianne... sure hope you've received a few cards I've sent out.... missing you my dear.....
Betty lol yes I understand about the dogs....Greg is so close and helps you out whenever you call.... just bring them a little treat from time to time to pass out when you leave....
Oh LK - yes so glad we aren't going to Disneyland... I used to know the comparison of the "land" to "Disneyworld" used to you could fit FOUR of them in the world... but that was before the Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom... maybe something to google so I know. A gal I met last time I was there said they would go to the land and the lines were longer... She was from Australia and Disneyland was MUCH closer to fly to than Florida.

Betty - good Lord willing next week this time I will have spent the day enjoying the new Harry Potter attractions at Universal/Islands of Adventure :O) (HUGE GRIN)

Got a LOT of swap plants in the ground.... DS helped a bit... too funny we dug up a seatbelt in the yard. I was looking for the rest of the car.

Betty - Lance has done all the studying to be an auctioneer only has to go get his certification. He really needs to do that.
Hugs to Crissy too...

Will drop by in a few...

Mary

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Mary - his auctioneer certification? How kewl is that?!?!?!

Katie - so glad you got so many of your swap plants in, and it's sooooooo nice that you & Tony get along so well!! Yes, it does sound like you've done a lot to your place. I loved the pictures you showed previously. Looks like a great property!!

I went to Walt Disney World the first summer they were open (before Land opened!), and there were no lines. The trolleybus around the park was free. Heck, to enter the park was free...... met a fellow that worked in the stables, I went swimming every morning at 5:30 in the lagoon, and had a trail ride for $5 (that's all it cost back then.....)

Betty - of Course you'd want to do stuff for Greg - he's so good....... and you Know I have to tease you about the dogs lol OH - don't forget to feed 'em! Are you bringing them home to romp around while you garden?

Well, supposed to have a frost warning tonight.......... going down to 1c/34F........... yikes, eh? lol Glad I didn't plant anything yet....... BUT I did get the front berm cleared out, so it will take any rain we have!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Evening, just got in, had a lovely evening..buffet was fantastic, open for continuous eats for 3 hrs..so play the horse races, eat, bid,eat and then a 1/2 hr at slots and home..actually enjoyed myself.

Just got back from letting dogs out, haven't eaten anything today, Mel said they wouldn't, being alone they refuse to eat so I think tomorrow morning I will bring them here for the day..

Will respond to the posts in the am, rather tired..maybe it was the gambling that did me in! Lol

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Betty - you big time gambler you LOL Good that you enjoyed yourself! I haven't "played the horses" for Years. Should go to Spruce Meadows sometime - they have equestrian jumping and tournaments, etc. Would be lovely.
They also have a huge International Christmas Craft sale on Nov 16 to 18 and Nov 23 to 25th. It's really jam-packed full of things to see, buy and eat LOL
Dogs are "funny" that way - they're very sociable creatures and usually don't like to be left alone......

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, sunshine,sunshine,sunshine!

Already been to feed/play with the puppies, did eat last night! Sat while they ate and gave them treats, left patio door open, at least they can sit near the pool and hot tub and enjoy themselves, heck, I should go over and do same..perhaps I will take time to sit tonight.

My energy level isn't at it's highest this morning..waning out a tad! Dew on the ground so likely can't cut grass till 10. With the heat of the day I did water the gardens..yuk closer you get to each garden the more work you see you have to do. New moto 'do what you can do today, there is always tomorrow' ???? Did I say that? Did notice that with the building of the shed one of my dappled willows is all but leafless and broken branches..to be expected for sure.

Susan I guess I had so much to do that I thought I couldn't give up afternoon and evening but it was enjoyable and Darlene had a good time, wouldn't you know this was Mike's entire family and 7th race horse was called Michaels Dream..it won and then it brought memories and a few tears...talked a bit about my trip to New Orleans, Darlene will consider going, Ann wants to go so now it's to see who in original group cannot go so further planning can be done.

Mary lol could the seat belt belong to the model " t"?
Is there a time frame between courses that he must work before able to write his exam?

Well Mary you mark down all the best of the best that I've not yet seen so I will know what to see...

LindaKay was the temps a little lower yesterday and more enjoyable to be out ?

Birds are just a chirping..if I don't get up and get at it

Better go and fill the feeders, this mornimg I will put out the hummingbird feeders.

Should run down to Foodland before everyone is out, need sugar.

Break is over

What are you all up to today??

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone! Betty, did you place any bets? Did you win?
We don't have gambling here in Texas, it is illegal. There used to be horse races in San Antonio,, but I think they got shut down.
Last night Todd and I went to a small park down town, where they had a small hot rod show ans live bands. One band was rock a billy, and the other one played old time surf music. It was nice to get out of the house for a bit. We got back home about 11:00 pm.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Sounds like a wonderful way to spend an evening Lindakay, I would especially have enjoyed Rock a Billy band, just know I'd have been up dancing! You are likely like me, gets too easy just to mellow out at home but once out you have the time of your life..

So many sounds outside, just fed birdies..wish the woodpecker would realize that my tin roof on the old antique shed I built a few years ago isn't wood..Lordy he makes me crazy

Break over, gotta run

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Betty, are you taking Lisinopril for your high blood pressure?

If not, check the side effects of your meds, they may be similar?

mulege, Mexico

Another beautiful day here. It's going to get hot, though.

One of my dragonfrtuit plants has its first flower bud. They usually need a polinater so I probably won't get fruit but the flowers are gorgeous.

I'll still get distracted with the list but it might help a little.

I got some of the seaweed spread out so it will dry a bit and be easier to put through the shredder.

Hope everyone has a great day.

hugs, katie

Victoria Harbour, ON

Oh Katie, you eat such different foods, sounds yummy! Did it take you long to adjust to the differents fruits/veggie/meats? Have to key in dragon fruit to see what it's flower would look like.

LindaKay, I will check side effects of what I'm taking when I'm n for the day..you may have found an answer..for some reason I remember that it sounds a familiar scenario! Hmm

Started with painting the other side of the shed..knew I would have enough for the back. Til they get their pants in this week bit I was short stain for 2 planks...drats

Then started the lawn, I'd walk 5 feet, pull up my slacks, elastic must be loose as I surely am not losing weight, talk another 5 feet and down the would come, was pulling them up more than I was cutting grass so finally decided to come n and put shorts on..got back grass 3/4 cut but so hot just might wait till later tonight when it cools off and I can water and throw down grass seed.

Water was just rolling off my brow..having grapefruit/banana juice then back to my list of todo's

Lots of work having so many gardens..never ending work but worth it when the pretties are in bloom.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Wow, she is a hot one, feel like I just got out of the pool!

Accomplished much, just not all I wanted to do but that is ok.
Went over to feed and let the dogs out..will go back at 8:00 and then call it a night.

AmaziNg, if someone was to come and visit they would not see I thing I've done and yet I've not stopped..

Haven't had breakfast or lunch, just juices..see there are 2 containers of Chinese food for.m Friday night, wonder if it's still good.

Wind is up, sure hope we get the rain they are calling for tomorrow ..grass is already dying..LindaKay you know about that with your hot Texas weather..we are used to lush green lawns....have to work double time to keep them so unless of course iit rains

So have you kept yourselves busy today?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Just taking it easy today.

Lyndonville, NY

Chinese is still good....sit down and eat woman!! And have extra fluids with that...msg not good for your pressure.

Baton Rouge, LA

Hello To All !

Susan thank you for the DisneyWorld memories ! We lived in Orlando when I was 5 (1970) right before it opened....
Betty - Thea had recommended Magnesium for energy before so when DH felt sluggish we bought some and I've tried a few times and I do think it has worked.... DH is on BP Meds as well....

LOL too funny... the Model A does not have seat belts... they didn't have them back then...that was before auto accidents I suppose. Some of the models I've seen have some interesting additions... like vases for flowers built in...

Will def keep notes on the trip but we'll just have to go to DWorld together LOL....
Katie I was given a dragon fruit at the October swap... Ive heard the flower is gorgeous. Mine has not grown much....it almost looks like a cactus.
Waving to Deb....

I did the Wally world trip today only for the Dworld trip. 5 "breakfasts" will be in the resort room for 6 people plus snacks and drinks and a few meals. Figured out someone to water the yard while we are out.

For all of us with children and grandchildren!

WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING

A message every adult should read because children
are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hang my
first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately
wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you feed the
birds in winter, and I learned that it was good to be kind
to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make my
favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little
things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn't looking I heard you say a
prayer, and I knew that there is a God I could always
talk to, and I learned to trust in Him.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make a
meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I
learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you take care
of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have
to take care of what we are given.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw how you
handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't
feel good, and I learned that I would have to be
responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hold
the door open for others and heard 'thank you' and
'you're welcome', and I learned respect for others.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw tears come
from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things
hurt, but it's all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw that you
cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be..

When you thought I wasn't looking I learned most of
life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and
productive person when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking I looked at you and
wanted to say, Thanks for all the things I saw when
you thought I wasn't looking.'

WHO DO SO MUCH FOR OTHERS,
BUT THINK THAT NO ONE EVER SEES.
LITTLE EYES SEE A LOT ..

Each of us (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend) influences the life of a child.

How will you touch the life of someone today? Just by sending this to someone else, you will probably make
them at least think about their influence on others.

Speak kindly.
Leave the rest to God.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Everyone has so much on their plates, spent the last hour reading and trying to remember everything. That's an impossible job for me since my memory seems to be slipping a lot. LOL.

I was on lisinopril for bp, but the coughing got so bad the doctor put me on something else. I've heard others say the same thing. Too bad all meds seem to have such bad sad effects.

Crissy, here's hoping you don't have to share what your grandma left to you with Dave, that seems so unfair.

I surely do miss lilacs, thanks for the pictures.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

No lilacs in CA? Guess it needs cooler temps than you have. We have lilacs in AB, but ours are just tiny buds for now.

Glad you were taken off lisinopril and your Dr found another med for your BP!
Yes, it always seems there are going to be side effects for all meds......

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning all, sunshine day one again, not complaining , just means work in the gardens again and some painting!

Nice to see you post Samigal, love lilacs as well..will post photo for you later of my boomerang lilacs, called everblooming, they fared well this winter and have grown over a foot..lilacs bloom once a year but this new breed is suppose to be everblooming..
Have an appt a week Friday, going to check this coughing re blood pressure meds..is improving though.

Pooches already looked after.thing a trip at noon and that will be it for my dog sitting! Kids couldn't have asked for a better weekend to spend on Sable Beach chores.

What a night, I fell deep into a sleep only to have Sailor trying to get under my bed and crying all the while..firecrackers went on for what seemed an eternity. Them sleep did not come easy!

At one point got up and sat on back patio...was so very quiet and enjoyable.

Was going to take a quick run into town but most everythingh is closed due to it being holiday Monday..should call and see if walmartis open.

How are your gardens doing, you are so ahead of us..only a few flowers in bloom.

Time to water before heat of the day!

And your plans for the day?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone! Sorry the fireworks woke up Sailor!
A pretty morning glories blooming this morning!

Good morning,

My lilacs were really bad this year...maybe a few sprigs on each of my five bushes. Not even enough to cut and bring in the house. They say it is because of the
early warm weather....followed by some severe freezes.

Although you don't have lilacs Samigirl....do you have crept myrtle? I just love those....and wisteria.

It is in the 70's here already...going to be a hot one.

I still didn't give Izzy a bath....have to finish up her trim and then see if I can handle that for her.

Debbie

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

No lilacs here either, due to the heat, but we do have crepe myrtle, it just does not have that smell! I have one wisteria bush, I have had it for a bout 2 years now, and it has not bloomed yet! Maybe because it does not get cold enough?

Lyndonville, NY

You might need to add something to the soil....thats what needs done around here. My green thumbs are really sticks, I love gardening, but
I don't have that touch! lol

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Everything I have is in pots with miracle grow! Not much grows in our cement hard caliche clay we have here! Other than cactus and weeds! Need some cactus?

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Good Morning.

Linda Kay, did you start your wisteria from seed or a cutting? The ones you buy at the nursery are usually at least 7+ years old (hence the cost) and wisteria has to be at least 7to 15 years old to bloom. Also, fertilizing in spring with a high nitrogen fertilizer causes a lot of growth and no blooms.

http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/flower/wisteria-blooming-problems.htm

Victoria Harbour, ON

Hello there,

My lilacs did not do well this year either, am hoping with the 4 new ones I put in and the cutting od dead branches that next year will be better..think it's the summer weather in March that did them in.

I have a beautiful shrub which really grew. Leap and bounds, pretty mini pink in it, wonder if that is what it could be.

LindaKay Love morning glories, planted about 10 pads this year, who knows maybe a few will come to life..I'll keep trying, said I could not grow peonies but this year I've 3 or 4 healthy plants with buds.

Finally I saw the bright red astilbe popping it's head out of the ground this morning, deep red is hard to find..think I did a no no, divided it, hope I didn't I damage the mother plant.

Can you believe I've done nothing this morning other than dust and wash the floors, seems past 3 days I used up all my energy..few thingsi'd like to paint so who knows, if I rest well this morning I'll be full of vim and vinegar this afternoon.

Took out a roast, rather on large side and am debating wether or not to cook it..I'm just me and roast likely would feed 8 hungry men but could have it for supper and again once this week and could take sandwiches to work.

Perfect weather, will be in high 70!s and a nice breeze..now if it could only rain later today..plants so want it.

(thunder)Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

Susan, love those words you posted, gonna send it to my Momma...and tell her thanks :)

Victoria Harbour, ON

Is a beautiful poem..going to print it out as well!

Are you off today Thunder? If we are saying it's hot hot both you and Suse must be in A/C and not outside puttering in the gardens.

Jean I planted wisteria about 4 years ago but it just didn't make it, perhaps because of our winters and yet a friend near Oshawa has it and it's breathtaking..another thing to add to my list of plants..lol

Quick show and tell

Shed Friday and today..sooo want to find some energy and do the white, wish you could come and h elp me!!!

Not sure what this one is, usually tags are left on shrubs but can't find it

LindaKay, maybe I could plant morning glories on side of the shed

Sad show of lilacs, these are from the Boomerag line, continuous bloom

maybe as they age I'll get more..think these are 3 years old

(thunder)Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

Betty wish I could come do your shed, and you could come help me sew!!! hubs bought some vinyl ?? outdoor fabric and wants me to re - do a swing ??? thing is old fabric is long gone :( so I have to totally guess at how to do it !!! I just know you would take one look and know exactly what to do !!

Yes today off, got to finish my center piece for the round robin, and try to do the swing....actually have the windows open, but am sure hubs will want them closed and ac on in just a short while. believe it is supposed to be low 90's today.

oh yea, got to clear off the sewing table also, before I can attempt the swing. stiff fabric, will need the space !! YIKES !!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

The shed is looking spot on Betty. there are wisteria that do very well in zones 3 and 4. One is called Blue Moon.

http://lorraine-syratt.suite101.com/blue-moon-and-other-cold-climate-wisteria-hardy-to-zone-3--4-a280870

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I got my wisteria from,a friend, she sent me a cutting, and it rooted pretty easy. So I will hang on to it for a few years and hope to get blooms.
Love that shed Betty!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thanks,, decided to do the paint thing but sun is beefing on the shed and water pouring off my face just cutting the back forty..soo unless it cools down later it will have to wait

Jean, I'll ask at the nursery for it and give it a try!

Thunder I don't use vinyl anymore, use the outdoor fabric, more expensive but last longer and it breathes..lots as usual on your plate..hey, could always hand everyone a brush when they come for the gathering, sure you can't come?? Lol

mulege, Mexico

Betty, your planat looks like a honeysuckle to me. Not that I know much.

I have a wisteria that has survived here for several years but hasn't bloomed yet. I got it cheap at Walmart and I've read it takes a few (or many) years for them to bloom. Mine is in the shade. Full sun here would have killed it.

katie

Lyndonville, NY

I agree with Katie, Betty that little pink one looks like a type of honeysuckle we have around here. Very fragrant.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Yup, I agree, Loncera tatarica...Pink tatarian honeysuckle. A very reliable cold tolerant honeysuckle bush from Southern Russia.

http://www.naturehills.com/product/pink_tatarian_honeysuckle.aspx

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thanks girls, I will go out and see if there is a fragrance..thought honeysuckle was a vine..
Watching a movie, eating craft dinner, 84 outside..can life get any better. Lol

Was talkin to Greg, they will be home around five so one more visit with the dogs!
