Chantell I have not had success with hardwood rootings...don't know why, I do everything I'm supposed to but never works for me, if you have any already rooted that would be great thanks!
Swapping & Chatting Ric & Holly's Swap III
Gita and Chantell
Fell asleep right after I posted my request to reswap your Dr Seuss brug .
Gita,
Unfortunately, I must withdraw my request for
a Dr Seuss brug,
a pink noid brug
a Brazilian Plume flower.
I am hopeful that others will step in from the well over 20 plant lovers planning to attend this swap who will want these choice plants so lovingly propagated and shared by you.
Sorry for any confusion or extra work . Now back to sleep. Guess I'll have to wait for reruns of 'Modern Family' lol
cpleup
You can still have a Brazilian Plume. They are starting to look much better.
Have them outside by now. This plant, naturally, has very thin stems. Even my big one.
They snap if you look at then wrong.......Will slip a newspaper bag over the ones i am bringing.
I did not have a pink NOID for you anyway--it was the 1st one that stopped growing.
Had that "nub" at the top.
Dr. Seuss then goes to Chantelle. Amen!
Jen---
My neighbor sticks chunks of her Rosemary in the ground and, eventually, they root.
I had some Rosemary cuttings in a glass of water--and they grew roots.
G.
Good to know, Gita, thanks
Jen - I'll 'stick' some Rosemary in dirt and bring - can't hurt, right? LOL
Gita - alrighty then - glad coleup (big thank you) decided for me...I will be thrilled to give Dr. S a home beside his 'kin' Charles G.
LOL, thanks
Gardadore,
Phlox 'Katherine' added to my list to bring for you.
Echo 'Wow' on your plant list!!!! I'd love the following if you have any left:
Adenophora Bulleyana
Chelone Hot Lips
Japanese anemone
Kitaibelia vitifolia
Lamium Orchid Frost
Leptodermis
Pulmonaria
Gita, Yes.
Wowzers ya'll...!!! I have to admit to sort of skimming a bit on earlier readings but did see some requests for things for us to bring. If anyone has requested anything this week and hasn't verified through dmail or what I am getting ready to list, please dmail and let me know to add you to my once again edited list. I may not get to the editing of my HAVES list today, but if I tell you in the thread or through dmail that I have you down for something, rest assured it is on my master list and will be at the swap.
Okie doke I have requests through this thread from:
Coleup - two unnamed Coleus and named Day Lilies
Catbird - Yellow Iris and a couple of Day Lilies
These are just new requests from recently, I already have you down for other things also.
Flowerjen- I will be like the others and check on my Rosemary and see if there is any ready to go.
Anyway........the past two days John added to our growing list of plants from others homes. A lady on his pizza route gave him two types of Coleus last year that I overwintered and have potted up several pots of it this spring and will be having more from rootings. Anyway, he happened to deliver to her place on Tuesday as she was dividing some gorgeous Hens and Chicks. She sent him home with a plastic saucer full of those. They are a different variety from those we already have so they have made a great addition.
Yesterday he visited northern VA to see a friend who wanted her Iris Garden gone. He came home with what he has said when potted will equal about forty pots worth. I say, keep them coming. One of the Iris is very unusual and if we can ID it, we will offer some of it later on at a swap.
Gonna close. Looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting some new folks I haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet. Buttoneer, I too want to see this group do a happy dance, ought to make for lots of laughs. Me especially.
Ruby
INSTALLMENT # 99 IN THE SAGA OF DR. S. SUE HIM! I SAY!!!!
He should have his license revoked! What kind of a Dr. is he?
He has shed all his familiar "clothing" so he can pass for someone else.
Just because he is large and pretentious! So is a Trash truck! There!!!
Take that--you impostor!
Bring him out into the light! Only cowards hide in the cloak of the dark!
And--right under my nose! Playing Possum in my basement! Hiding behind a pile of pots!
How dare he? Let me go at him with my knife and saw in hand. There will be a blood-let!
All of M.A.F is witness to the issues HE has created and the pain he has caused me.
My word is my honor--and this Dr. has sullied it. I stay awake nights thinking about this!
People have given up what is near and dear to them to appease the "beast" in HIM.
SOOO---THE PLOT OF THE DR. S. BRUG. MYSTERY THICKENS.................
OK! Here are the FACTS and nothing BUT the facts! So help me Dr. Oz! YOU know everything!
*****************************************************************************
Rip off the mask--get rid of the cloak----this "thing" here is NOT a "pink NOID!!!"
It is the DR. himself. Incognito! He tried to pretend to be pink--but has been uncovered now.
A faded tattoo on his lower torso plainly says: "DR" Proof enough to me!!!
1--Look here at the criminal in hiding. He is just a bag of bones.....
2--I have taken the knife to him and cut him down to size. Yet--still he plays Possum.
The arrogant so-and so!
3--I have cut his head and arms off---and he still bleeds PINK!
4--I have butchered every bone in the Dr.'s body and buried it in dirt.
5--Here is the whole Family, gathered to support each other---but the DR. is cut up in pieces!
He's NOT bleeding PINK any more!!!!! His blood is now curdled.....
Ruby, you started me on a "thing" with those hens & chicks... picked up a couple on sale at DPF last fall and have 3 more varieties coming next week from Santa Rosa. Joyanna thinks they're adorable, of course.
They are neat little things aren't they Jill? I have a cup of them for you too. They tend to have personalities sort of or minds of their own, because they all grow differently even under the same conditions.
So glad that you like them. Now I know.
Ruby
Yikes Gita, reading through your post above I kept seeing poor Mickey Mouse in "the Sorcerer's Apprentice" where all of the brooms kept multiplying and marching ominously towards him! (And crossing my fingers that now that you have cut the Dr down to size that I will not be back on your list for such a one as this.) Tee Hee, Let braver folk than I tackle these brugs of yours. Named or not. I formally renounce any and all claims to brugs before this esteemed group here assembled, even if it means that I alone shall wear the mantle of 'brugless one amongst us' and forgo all happy dancing for a period not to exceed two weeks.
Alas and alack, Judy

TO RETURN TO SANITY AND EXPLAIN WHAT HAS HAPPENED......
I always doubted that the small Dr. S. i had could have provided all the cuttings
that I rooted. Something just did not make sense.
The SMALL Dr. S. was so frail and skinny--the one I said I could NOT cut anything off of.
I had forgotten that I had TWO Dr. S.'s last year. The older one---and the smaller one.
Today--as I was cutting up the "beast"--I just discovered that the big one---which I have been
calling the NOID Pink Brug--was actually the older Dr. Seuss Brug.
Saw a marking on its trunk--"DR" Whew!!!! What a relief! The Dr. LIVES!!!!
Had to chop up his Stethoscope though! Teeeeeeeeeee....Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....
OK! Back to sanity!
The old, dead looking Brug DID get chopped up. And--doled out accordingly.
As all "Sagas"--this one too had a happy ending.
Please read all the explanations on each photo posted....
1--Holly--You and Ric are getting the old trunk one. It has itsy-bitsy new growths all up and down.
I did root-prune it somewhat--and did put it in a anew pot (with a decadent soil mixture) with the
holes cut out already so you can just sink it in a bigger patio pot--or in a bed for easy removal
in the fall. If you need my Brug. care "Primer"I will be glad to send it to you.
2--Coleup---because of your selfless generosity to give up your Dr. S. Brug to Chantelle--
you will be getting the largest cutting off the top of the old Dr. S. plant. Chantelle will get the one
I had tagged for you since last year. See picture--
Ruby, I'd like to play with some hen and chicks too if you have enough to go around and room to bring them.
I have "black" hen and chicks to share and have been thinking that I would just bring a mother plant and divy it up at the swap rather than pot up little pieces. So, it is fine to bring some for me unpotted. My impression is that they take root quite readily. I have a sedum called "voodoo" that I'll do that with, too. Also have an "angelina" with a very unusual thick three part almost stem that might be fun for folks to see... Which reminds me...
Sallyg or ? I'd like some pieces or a baggie of 'blue spruce' if available.
HEY!!!!
WHAT happened to my other 3 photo comments??????????????
Will repeat them here: Refer to pictures above, though.
3--All the smaller "bones" cut up. These are short stem cuttings. They WILL root.
S0--all of you that asked for a Dr. Seuss cutting will get one.
You will just have to wait until it roots. Blooms should come next year.
4--This is the skinny, small Brug I thought was the only one I had. Glad to find out it is not!
5--This was a picture of all the Dr.'s Family gathered up in support of each other.
What a CLAN!
oh shoot that might not be chickweed
:(
just looking through photos not the right weed
Coleup, do you have any Sedum Voodoo to spare? I've been looking for that darn sedum everywhere! :-)
Oh, Allison, sure looks like the chickweed that volunteers in containers I leave outside!
http://www.ediblewildfood.com/chickweed.aspx
Plant ID book says stems have row of white hairs in a weave like pattern. Mine's all gone to compost or I'd compare. I know as a kid our chickens really loved it when I threw big handfuls into their pen. Do you have a test chicken handy?
Looks like there might be something else in there, too.
ssgardener, Yes, of course I will share. Also, I just bought this one for I think $5 or less. Would you like me to see if they have another when I shop there Sat?
doesn't chickweed have runners??.. will look tomorrow if it has the weave or not
Coleup, yes, if you have the opportunity, please pick up a Voodoo for me!
The plants in the window box are not chickweed, they are probably bittercress. Divided leaves as opposed to a series of small leaves on a stem. Edible, but not sought after for pesto.
I am a bit disappointed----
Don't any of you have a sense of humor????? Talking about my "Saga" report om the Dr. Seuss......
I kind of enjoyed writing all that. Gave my frivolous mind an outlet for a few minutes,,,,
coleup--you were the only one that got into "the groove".....AND--You SHALL have a Dr. Seuss BIG cutting to root.
Creative minds think alike...even if it is silly.....Fun...Fun....
BOOOOOOOO-----Gita
Gita, I had a chuckle reading about the good DR. Your energy amazes me.
So looking forward to this upcoming EVENT.
Gita, I was skipping over the brug posts, so I scrolled back up to see what I'd missed... I was just rolling by the time I got to the end... "curdled," indeed!
Chantell, the chickweed I potted up for you has tiny hairs on the stems & leaves... From the ID link above, I think it is actually "Mouse Ear Chickweed"... that means the more plain looking stuff in the garden may be what you're after, and while it might be tricky finding plants of it that are still good I might be able to get some seeds... and next spring, you can help yourself to the seedlings spreading over the veggie bed!
oh well... I will keep looking.. sure there is some around here somewhere
Gita, awesome creative writing there!
coleup, yes, I will bring a lot of blue spruce se dum.
I'm not sure what I find more amusing the saga of Dr S or the chickweed treasure hunt. Y'all are too cute!! Ok I'll add ths to my ave list as well...any interest in Passifloras? Most likely Maypop but could be Incense? I've never had it pop up so early in the season - mild winters done crazy things!!
yes I would love a maypop!!
Hand up for maypop here! Thanks.
Got you both down for Passis
Holly,
Just a quick question. Is the "Identification of Common Garden Edible Weeds" walk just before or just after the "Green Houses by Ric" tour? And, is it true that Gitas Brugs 101 is full?
Seriously, what else could we bring or help out with?
This message was edited May 4, 2012 8:15 AM
LOL, What a wonderful group of informative gardeners we are with such varied interests. Not to mention good cooks.
Gitas Brugs 101 still has a few openings and we can eat our Garden Edible Weeds while we attend. Or maybe not. LOL
Can't think of a more fun day having you all here with plants and food. Ric and I are getting so excited.
LOL don't know that there would be time but I'm happy to bring a slew of books on herbal medicines and recipes etc for folks to look through if there's interest.
Oh gosh, that just reminded me that I haven't had time to check out the foods stuff thread. I suppose since we are traveling quite a distance to get there and don't want to have anything that I might prepare spoil on the ride, I will do my usual with chips and dip or something along those lines. I will thank everyone ahead of time that will be taking the time to share their cooking skills with the group, because I am really looking forward to munching down on the goodies. I loved Pat's Special K cereal and chocolate bars so well last year at Aspenhill's swap that I got her recipe and made them here. Yummy!!!
The other half of the Watts Family Gardening Duo asks me to mention that space in our car is getting tight, but we will do our best in fulfilling everyones desires. Our Subaru used to have a luggage rack which we could have in tight situations used to carry things but probably the year it was brand new and I had a new sixteen year old driver in the home, the said sixteen year old decided to take my new car four wheeling at some point. One morning I walked out where it was parked and noticed the top of the car looked different. Upon inspections I saw that half of the rack was broken off and missing. Upon even further inspection, I found dents on both sides and ends of the car, a piece of something hanging from the front motor area. I was livid!!! Inspection of the inside of the vehicle showed that were dents in the ceiling where two or three heads had bumped it. KIDS!!! Anyway.....I had three estimates for repair work which ranged from seven thousand to twelve thousand in damage. Said sixteen year old inherited some money at age eighteen and the first expenditure he had was paying his mother ten thousand dollars for the repairs to her car. Moral of the story, and there are more than one......don't allow sixteen year olds to drive new cars if you want it to stay looking new and moral number two is to wear helmets if four wheeling in a Subaru Forester. hahaha
Anyway, Coleup will be glad to bring some hennies and chickies to you. I already put in a request for some of your black ones. I am like Jill and particularly love these unusual plants. To all others.....really looking forward to seeing some of you again and meeting some new folks for the first time. Party down y'all!!!!!
Ruby
Cross posted with Coleup and Holly......after reading about the garden edibles yesterday I happened to survey some of the beds here. I have a good sized patch of Lambs Quarters growing in my front bed if anyone would like for me to pull them on Friday and bag up. I believe I also found a rather healthy looking chickweed plant growing in a pot of Creeping Jenny I have but had pulled and thrown away before thinking of possibly saving it for Chantell.
When telling John about Chantell still looking for Chickweed, he said something along the same lines that Jill mentioned earlier.....he said he could supply you with all the dried weeds and seeds you could possibly want and you can sow them wherever your heart desires. Let me know if you would like a baggie full.
Ruby
Gee Ruby, I woke up one morning with a car that looked a good bit like that, too. This was many years ago and we would leave the keys in the cars back then. With 2 sons of driving age and quite a few boys in the neighborhood of the same ages we never did find out how those mysterious dents came to be. We still don't bother to lock the cars but I don't let the keys in them any more.
I need to go organize that food thread, right now there isn't a good list just all the posts that have been made and boy is there a lot of yummy food coming.
