Swapping & Chatting Ric & Holly's Swap III

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ruby, please tell "Dealer" John that I'd love to have a baggie of herbs and seeds!! Maybe just clearly mark the legal herbs that are within...can you just see us swapping baggies in a parking lot and the drug dogs coming out of the bushes....

I suppose John would have to admit to it not being the first time that he and cops had a discussion about the weed he had on him. Actually, the time he got in trouble over something, it was Peyote Buttons. I am very happy to announce that is has been over twenty years since he has touched anything that the police would frown upon. He is still an old hippie though, through and through. He is still attending the shows that ex Grateful Dead members are now doing. He attended a show two weeks ago headlining Bob Weir who was lead singer for the Dead.

For any others.......I will probably not take any more requests for things after Tuesday due to time constraints later in the week. Please check my list again, and let me know if there are any more things that we can pack in the car and bring with us. We have lots to share, so please don't be shy.

Ruby

Calling all COLEUS fans!

Here's the list of what Michelle (Badseed) has available for ordering. The selection isn't as large as she hoped (some of them got off to a slow start), but she does have some really cool looking ones. These are all SUN COLEUS, and the ones I got from her last year did just fine on my very sunny deck.

Price is $2.50 per plant, and she said she could give us a discount that I think will about cover shipping, so that makes the math easy. The plants listed are growing well in 2x2x3" pots. She said she'll ship them to me Monday/Tuesday before the swap, so I should just be able to sort them out and give them a drink... if they look like they need potting up, I'll do it, but I think they'll "hold" just fine for a day or two.

If you're interested, please Dmail me to let me know which ones and how many you'd like. Michelle is giving us "dibs" on her available stock, so I'd like to finalize our order soon -- say, by next week Tuesday. It'll be "first come first served" if we have varieties that sell out (I'll go by date/time of your Dmail); note the number available is given after each name. I'll try to add brief descriptions & links for photos.

Critter, I'd be interested in a few, do I order from you and pay you at Holly and Rics?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I thought of more things to add to my list:

Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis)
Chrysanthemum x rubellum 'Clara Curtis'

In a pre-swap earlier today, ssgardener gave me some beautiful sedum and lilies of the valley -- I am going to try to get them in before the skies open (hmm, there is only a 15% chance of rain but the skies are forboding).

One last thing: I'll be going out of town Friday, and won't be back until the following Friday after midnight -- so anything I bring to the swap will need to be potted up before I leave. Sooooo, please let me know by Thursday (earlier would be better) if there is something on my list you want.

I probably won't bring much, if anything, other than what people ask me for before the swap. So if there is something you want, please be sure to let me know.

I know this has nothing whatsoever to do with the swap but I had to include this picture taken this afternoon of me (feeling no pain due to Open Bar) and Bob who has a new nickname: Pappy Jr, at the wedding & reception of our nephew Chris Saum and his beautiful bride, Carolynne Woolley.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm so confused. I know I wrote a response to flowAjen yesterday but it's not showing up. I got you down for the coreopsis and MZ. I also added wintersown balloon flowers to my haves list.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS-

We have beautiful Balloon Flowers (Platycodons) for sale at the HD.
Seemed to be the "purchase de Jour".....Everyone was getting them...

I have some already. just wish they looked as full and healthy as the ones at HD.

Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, I've seen them at HD. So pretty! Mine won't bloom until next year, though. I hope they get to be as pretty as the ones being sold.

Crozet, VA

Judy, thanks so much for sharing this picture at the wedding and the open bar. I thought with your already some times over the top antics that you and an open bar might be a scary thought. I love you gal. So glad too that Bob is able to get out and about. Looking forward to seeing you both at Holly and Rics place.

Uh oh, I bad. When I was writing here last week I was thinking the swap was this coming weekend. I stand corrected, and will change my last day for requests for Friday of this coming week.

Happy, I have you listed as wanting Monarda, Scabiosa and some Shasta Daisy. Will do. So glad I have something that you wanted because I have some really special plants here that have come from you. I think very kindly of you each time I take in the beauty of the now rather large Japanese Maple in our back yard and the Ficus Benjamina that is doing quite well also. First Ficus I have ever had success with keeping it alive. Thank you so very much.

Wind, it will be great to see you and Harry. It has been a good while since we have had the pleasure of seeing you two. Folks, many of my front deck plants originated at Wind's home. Wind's home is spectacular and her gardens out of this world. I remember my first trip to her house, I was indeed like a kid in a candy store.....ooh, aah, ooh, aah.

The last two days have been days full of drizzling rain all day long. Maybe I have a chance of things clearing this afternoon, but it doesn't look too good currently. With that said, it means that I won't be gardening outside and will have to find indoors or porch things to keep me occupied. There are so many things I want to get outdoors and do, and hesitate due to adding wet weather to a crazy mixed up immune system. Too scary to attempt what I may possibly pay dearly for later on.

I still haven't found the nerve to wrestle with the Prickly Pear I dug up some weeks ago. Have a good thick pair of leather gloves and may go out shortly and pot some of it. Most everything that either John or I have potted that are marked for the swap are doing well enough. He is really concerned about our car not holding everything. I think we will be just fine, so make requests folks, we will get the plants there someway.

Gonna scoot along.....I am looking forward to the ever closer day that we all get together for this event. Yippie y'all.

Ruby

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Ruby -- I'm so glad the Ficus and Maple are doing well for you! That's one thing I love about swaps -- the plants are tried and true, and so likely to succeed!

I've been wrestling out plants and potting them up for the swap - a good thing, because I am finding precious ones that were being crowded out!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ruby---

I have the same concerns---NOT being able to fit everything in the car. I only have an "Outback"---
NOT a very big car! I have SOOOOOO much that has been promised. And--all of it is in pots.

One solution would be to ask Donner to swing by my house after work and p/u her stuff--she has a lot!
I believe she got back yesterday (Saturday). Need some recovery time!

Same for SallyG-not that she wanted a lot from me--but I could drive down to her house (1/2hr)
and take her what she wanted. And--I could p/u what I asked for. Short but sweet visit.

Gita

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Hey, Gita, how about starting a new separate thread with that picture of your loaded car from two years ago. Maybe it could be called Getting there is only the beginning. or some such .That way us packers in subaru like wagons can compare notes and have some fun while last days before swap details can be focused on here .

Also, I'd like to discuss some "pre swap" options with you and Sally and Catbird, who I just saw on the job but couldn't talk much as there were lines at HD checkout.

I've been busy stimulation the floriculture segment of our ecomomy today and must go out and unload my stuff. Will be back in as sun sets and moon rises.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

coleup.---------------------HUH??????

Not sure what you were proposing....The picture o my loaded up car would get---maybe----
3 response...

However! Interesting that our minds ran in the same groove.
I was going to propose something different to everyone.

PLEASE!!!! Take the time to post a picture of yourself so we can all see what you look like.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ahem----

I could NOT find an easy venue for you to post a picture.

IF you already have a picture of yourself--as when you click on someones name--
I think there is an option "edit" that and post a new one...BUMMER!!!!

I was so sure here was going to be some kind of a likk under the "Member's Photo Album"...

HELP!!!!!! I still would li8ke to see a picture if everyone when I click on their names...
Kind of--getting to know someone--virtually. Until we meet!!!!

PLEASE do it!!!!! Thanks--Gita

PS...My picture is about 4 years old. Will try to update it as soon as I can figure out HOW!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita - click on 'my info'...scroll down - beneath your pic is a "edit this picture" - click on that - upload new pic with new verbage if you like

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Heya! We were up in Pittsburgh this weekend for my niece's First Communion, got back just an hour ago... Glad to see there's interest in Michelle's coleus! I'll get back to those who Dmailed tomorrow, after I figure out if we had any that "sold out" and who got what if so. Paying me at Holly's works just fine. :-)

I'm bumming because I managed to leave a big pot of 1 & 2 year old balloon flower "volunteers" behind... dug them yesterday (with my niece's help) from where they were overgrowing a corner of the bed, we planted 8 big clumps in another bed, and I stacked the remainder into a big pot to bring home today... except I forgot it. My brother said he would try to figure out an easy way to keep them temporarily, and I'll pot them up when I get them... so I may have only a couple or a bunch available at the fall swap (or any time this summer). Phooey. Was hoping to post "who wants balloon flower??" tonight. *sigh*

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, I'd like a black hens and chicks, if you have any left.

Chantell, I'd like to try a cutting of your spanish lavender.

I'm having awful luck growing sunflowers. I only have 4 sickly seedlings from 2 packets of seeds. Does anyone have any extra sunflowers?

What kind of mint has the strongest flavor? I have chocolate mint, which smells great, but the flavor isn't very strong.

I'm bringing a bucket of my cactus soil ("Al's gritty mix" recipe). Please bring a container if you'd like to take some home.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

SS, there are always sunflowers growing under my bird feeder since the seed mix has lots of sunflower seeds in it and the birds keep knocking lots of the seed to the ground. Don't know what kind they are but I'm sure I can find some a good size for potting.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Roses!

Critter, I'd like a cutting of ZD rose, if you have one left.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

SSG, I'll double check, but I think the barely-rooted cuttings have been spoken for. I can try to take some fresh cuttings (I've read this may also be a good time of year, taking a cutting with a bud), and we'll see how they do. :-)

Crozet, VA

Despite lots of weekend rain I was finally able to get outdoors yesterday and get a few swap plants potted for folks. Whilst there I used the time to de-weed some of the nastier looking areas too. I awakened to yet another gray day, not sure of the weather forecast, but not a lot of gardening will take place today due to a doctor visit and flooring shopping later on.

Oh yeah, I am still hearing a lot of worry about everything fitting in to our car. I don't feel as though there will be a problem, but as he pointed out, our plants are coming potted too and the day lilies and iris are in three gallon pots and most others in good sized pots too. Anyway.....one day last week while transporting a house plant it tipped over in the front passenger seat floor board. I haven't yet been out to clean it up and am now thinking with all the moisture the past three days that I may be dealing with mud by the time I go out to clean it. I had the car washed the same day the pot tipped over too.....ain't that always the case?

Anyway....gonna put the word out that I still have loads of Rose Campion that I would love to share with anyone who may be so inclined. It is one of my very favorite plants, but I don't need dozens and dozens of them. I finally put on my thick leather gloves and potted up six or eight nice pots of Prickly Pear. That is also up for grabs too for anyone who wants a plant that is a bit odd and unusual.

Happy, I thought of one more thing you have shared with us in the past which has really done well and brought me a lot of pleasure.....Sweet Woodruff. We have patches of it in several locations. Aspenhill seems to like that plant also, so will be sharing a pot of it with her.

Anyway......you folks all have a good Monday, I am going to try to.

Ruby

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

ss--

I have Spearmint growing all over a bed under my Nandina. Is that strong enough?
I would, gladly, dig some of it up. Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

SSG, I've got Kentucky Colonel Spearmint and Chocolate Peppermint and Hillary's Sweet Lemon Mint, all of which have strong flavors without the harsh note that some mints seem to have...

Ruby, I picked up some sturdy produce boxes at Costco the other day... I think I can put shorter plants in them and stack the boxes as needed. I often pack a "lower layer" in a couple of those sturdy plastic storage boxes (with lids), too (big pots on the bottom, smaller pots perched between, resting on their rims or even tucked down inside the pot (bet you could nestle a bunch of small pots down inside some of those big DL or iris pots). I always think it'll never fit, but then I manage to pack up pretty compactly the day before.
