Swapping & Chatting Ric & Holly's Swap III

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi guys, I have a few requests …

Holly, any comfrey left? or Begonias (Dwarf 6”) Dark Foliage?
or Begonia Dragon Wing?

Critter, any heirloom 6pks left? just one please if you have it

Aspenhill, any Heuchera 'Firefly'?

Chantell, I’d like to try the Peanut Butter Shrub if you had any left. We have Clerodendrum. I never heard of the shrub though!

Gardadore, hi! Ironweed please if you can find any more. We used to have some and it got squeezed out by our vinca

...I still have to see what we have to bring. I'm pretty sure I'll have some chia (salvia tillifolia) and a tub full of red canna tubers again =) Harry wants to get rid of our female asparagus too (I will provide variety names) if anyone wants any, I'll dig them up. Female plants are not as good producers. I like them though, the stems are thin and are great eaten straight from the garden. Unfortunately now the harvest is over and they are getting tall ferns uggh...difficult to move....

any requests please dmail me

wind - would cuttings be ok? I will dig up as many suckers as I have but not sure if there will be enough for all.

Saylorsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

HollyAnne,

I would love one or both of the Cheddar Cauliflower from Larry and Vickie. Thanks,

Jessica

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup and onewish1 -- I've got you covered for Begonia Grandis.

Saylorsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Wind,

I can't believe your ironweed was choked out by the vinca! Mine seems to come up through anything! It is late emerging, which is why I may not find enough to satisfy the requests at this point! But I will keep the old (and now somewhat "cataracty") eyes peeled!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gardadore, you can drop the ironweed from my too-greedy list, no problem.

Wind, I'll put your name on a tomato 6-pack!

Saylorsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Not dropping anything until I have to. We still have time and if we ever get consistently warmer weather I'm sure I can get enough somehow - just don't want to get people's hopes up and not deliver!!

A helpful hint, maybe! I like to cut paper bags down , put the pots and cuttings in them and write the name of the person receiving them on the outside. Then I put the bags in cartons and it makes it easier to keep track, sort and distribute. Obviously some of you will require more than one paper bag but I find the pots are less apt to tip over as well. I have found this very useful when transporting plants to swaps. If the pots are not too large then you can staple part of the upper bag shut to make it easier to carry. Even with big pots it helps keep things cleaner in the car if something does tip over. You don't have to cut a bag down much for the big pots. Just a thought!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

thank you Happy

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Yes, thankyou Happy!

Good suggestion on the paper bags for transporting plants Gardadore. You sound like the voice of experience!

Chantell the only herbs that might meet your 'unusual' category that I could bring are Herb Robert and a seedling of ruta graveolens. Let me know if you want none, one, or both.

I bought the remaining supply of mini hosta 'Blue Mouse Ears' at HD. Dmail me and I'll put your name on one for cost ($2.50).

Crozet, VA

I know that I wanted to comment on a few things, but read so many things that I have forgotten what I wanted to mention. Anyway...I would like to thank everyone who gave ideas for transporting plants. All great ideas. Ecnalg had mentioned that David was using the hard plastic type milk crates to add a second row in their vehicle, and that is workable here. John said he also considered a piece of plyboard fit to size for the rear end of the wagon. Anyway.....I believe that all will get there and hopefully get there in good shape.

Too late on the potted plants Cole. He has pretty much potted all requests or already had them potted from last year. I will tell him that if between now and the swap if he divides anything, yours can come bare root. Good golly Molly......there is a whole lot of swapping going on. I can't recall there ever being this much interest and activity for a past swap. Keeping up with these lists have been lots of fun. I love reading the sorts of plants that different folks are interested in.

Cole, if all the Elephant Ears haven't been spoken for, I would like to have one please. I have four pots of them going currently, but may plant some of them in the soil this year. Some year back we grew gigantic ones in the front bed. I couldn't get over the size of those things, and would love to see that happen again.

I have a lot of pots of newly started Aloe if anyone is interested. Let me know. I guess I need to get up from this chair and see about getting my day started......it is almost noon and all I have done as of yet is read and write this morning. I have really enjoyed this thread and am really looking forward to the Swap of the Century it sounds like. You folks all have a great day.

Does anyone what some petunias? I bought them for centerpieces but didn't need them all. I have 20 of the purpley pink, 10 pink and 5 white

coleup - I will pass on the Rue but the Herb Robert sounds wonderful - I would love to give him a try...thank you for thinking of me!!

ruby - could I have 2 baby aloes for the girls, please?! I've been trying to teach them about plants that we use in the kitchen, for illness or 'boo-boos' and that would be pretty cool for them to have their own to tend to. :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

FlowAJen, I'd be happy to reimburse you for a trio of the purple-veined (left photo) ones -- very pretty!

We're going to Southern States (to visit the baby chicks), might try to stop at WalMart either today or tomorrow for some of those little $3 'Whirlwind' hostas... I know Happy & egnalg want one; anybody else -- let me know! I'll probably pick up 1 extra anyway, can always plant it in a pot for my mom!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have a few agastache giant white I can spare.. the seeds came from a trade.. would hope they are right though

http://www.localharvest.org/agastache-seed-mexicana-white-C22530

haven't grown this one before... new to me

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Wind if no one else wants those Female Asparagus I would take them. My bed needs beefing up and I really like the thin spears. I keep them in the fridge and eat them like snacks.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Oh Jill no need for $...gotcha down

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Jen! LMK what I can slide your way in return, then... Whirlwind hosta? Rozanne geranium? :-)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'll be happy with just some basil, thanks! Did you do any scented geraniums this year?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

FlowAJen, I'd love some petunias as well. I'll take whatever you have to spare. I can dig up some extra john creech for you in return. The ones I potted up a few weeks ago are bursting in their pots!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I can attest that ssgardener's John Creech is stunning!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

you got it!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

onewish - I'd love some of the agastache giant white if they're not all spoken for.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, I have some lynchis alpina seedlings from seeds I got at the winter swap. You're right, Critter, they were really easy to wintersow!

I have plenty if anyone's interested.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

thank you! thank you!

HollyAnn I'm sure you made Harry's day....I'll tell him and we'll bring some asparagus with us =)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

you got it Chantell

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I added a couple more plants to our list. I'll be adding more as I can.

I think we have extra moon vine seeds too. I just have to remember where I put them!! They were still in the pods somewhere...but where???

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ruby - you can have my EE's coleup if they're all spoken for....you have much more the room for them then I. :-)

Saylorsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Wind, May I have 1 or 2 (depending on demand) of the Salvia sclarea ‘turkestanica alba’ (Vatican sage)? I love this plant!! Thanks!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Anyone have mugwort or agrimony by chance?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

ssg I would like some lynchis alpina. Looks like it would be good for the fairy dish garden I am making this spring.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Chantell -Trust me you don't want Mugwort! I thought I did once. Let someone else grow it and collect it from them for herbal use, they'll have plenty.

SSG - I would like some Lychnis alpina too. Thanks.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I agree... underground runners and all... anytime I see it I panic

;)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

ss--

Lychnis Alba?? Is that Rose Campion--except a white version??

If it is--could I please have a couple of seedlings???

I have the Rose ones--love them scattered here and there.

Thank you, Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, I think the flowers are supposed to be pink. It's definitely alpina (alpine). I'm afraid I don't know much about rose campions, so I can't really compare.

Jill, do you have any more info on this flower?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Jen, I did take cuttings of my neglected 'Snowflake Rose' and 'Peppermint Rose', but only got a couple... stuck them in water to root; will try to get them on the heat mat to improve their chances. I picked up 3 others at Philly but lost 2. :-( (and the remaining one is nutmeg, which I've almost never been able to root even with a full-on effort) If there are any SG's you're especially looking for, let me know, because I might twist Jim's arm to take me to DeBaggio's on Sunday. :-) http://www.debaggioherbs.com/ They don't do mail order, but I'm happy to play personal shopper when/if I go!

Lychnis alpina is Alpine Catchfly... and the one that's from me gets hot pink flowers on airy stems... self sows freely, but it's easy to ID & pull/break off, so no problem. (It's not one that regrows from the tiniest scrap of root)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Nothing special I was looking for I was just wondering. That 'Mabel Grey' intrigues me though and I saw they have coconut! how awesome is that?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Here are a couple photos of baby Begonia Grandis -- they are the little leaves sticking out here and there, with a reddish center and veins. They really like to seed into stone walls. They are easy to pull out (this will be my source for the swap!).

They do need shade, and a bit of moisture. I don't have any photos of them in bloom.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

If this helps---here is my Begonia Grandis last year.
I thought I had pictures of the bloom. Can't find it!

#2--This is the Rose Campion I have.
If it is not this one--I withdraw my request --ssgardener.

Ooops -- I forgot the photos. Here they are. But it is the dangling pink flowers in late July and August that make them so special, when nothing else is looking good.

Happy, I'd like some of the Begonia Grandis if you still have some left - didn't know what it was, but seeing the photos and the description, it would look great in my hillside shade garden. Thanks, terri
