Mary, those are really beautiful. I had some martagons established before a heavy foot (not mine) appeared to send them to lily heaven. Yours remind me that I should plant some again.
Lily Blooms 2012
Iona was a surprise. I don't remember getting it as a freebie nor did I order it. But is is so pretty and delicate. It is only 12" tall and the bloom is about 2" across. I found it on TLG from whom I ordered my other lilies and identified it there. According to them it should get 4' tall. Boy does this baby have a lot of growing to do. I think I will move it while it is small. I think, judging by two other tiny little stems nearby that I have three. One of life's puzzles. Or TLG send a wrong lily. Will have to check my order for who is missing.
Wow, a freebie martagon would surprise me!
I don't know much about martagon lilies so wasn't surprised. So maybe a mistake. Will double check the order for missing lily. Want one? lol
I love Martagons. They are slow to get established but are regal and magical in the garden.
I have speciosum (sp) alba lilies. I don't think they will blossom here as our season doesn't extend far enough. Just as they are getting ready to open, they turn brown and all off. Would anyone want to take them off my hands. I understand they are a beautiful lily and I don't want to just trash them.
Well, I'm rasing my hand here. I would be pleased to do it and pay the postage. Sending you a dmail.
Donna
Got it. and replied
Mary and Donna, those are lovely. Enjoy.
Thanks Donna. that is what I thought. The little guy is not Ariadne. This one is so diminutive but even Iona is supposed to be 5-6'. So maybe it is a freebe in a baby bulb?? Well, I will find out as the others bloom.
It's such a treat to see your lilies, Mary! You may consider that you're last on the list for blooms but, believe me, we all wish we could have your lilies blooming now in our gardens.
Here are pics of my Ariadne. It appears that the stigma of Iona is very dark. http://www.thelilygarden.com/pages_lilies/trumpet_1.html#ion
Moby, yours doesn't look very pink. When I look at B&D lilies or TLG, their flowers are really pinkish looking and you can't see the markings. I will have to assume based on the stigma that I have Ariadne which is what I ordered. but if so, I am really disappointed in the size. Not even one foot tall. some of the others I ordered have huge stems and monster flowers. Gizmo, with 11" blooms came from Faraway flowers and Ariadne came from TLG. both are super nurseries.
All lovely but I really like Pink Mystery.
That IS gorgeous!
Mary, looking back at my pics, I see the pollen is a little ratty looking which tells me the blooms is a few days old ~ and bleached out. I seem to remember that Ariadne took a couple years to settle in and get to 4 ft.
I think Pink Mystery is really special, too. I am going to scout around for it.
I guess so. I will move it however to where it will get more sun and is lower. It is on a little 2' hillock with Orania, Conc d'Or, Mother of Pearl. All fairly tall and really big. This would stick up way over the fence and could be seen from the road behind. Hmmmm, maybe a neat idea.
Mary, I hope you still have lilies to enjoy. Till I got the Orienpets, I never knew lilies could grow so tall in my yard.
Marcia
Oh lots more to come. Orania, Conc'dor, Gizmo, Ice Caves, Dimension, Playtime, BonBini... plus a few I have forgotten. Love them all.
All right! Let's go!
Opps. I am falling behind.
Orienpets are weird, especially Silk Road. I had them in the ground for years, since 2003 and they never grew very tall. They were consistently tall enough to climb over my two foot, baptisia australis, but that's it, and they never multiplied. See pic. 1.
Then, because I was selling the house, I had to move to an apartment for a year (which I chose almost entirely for its large balcony and southern exposure). In pic 2 they are in pots, one large and two small. And they are at least two feet taller. I loved my view of them in front of the glorious burr oak that grew outside my unit. I had only seen tiny burr oaks, and thought them homely. This one was magnificent.
The Silk Roads grew up, and then leaned out. Passersby were very complimentary. Pic 3.
It didn't seem to matter that they were sharing their space with other lilies I was transitioning. One was in a pot with a rose and two other lilies! Pic. 4.
Here they are from the ground. Pic. 5
And the real surprise? For the first time, they grew two bulblets, which I have planted for bloom next year.
I like the first pic. I have two baptisia australis. Mine only grow to about 24" tall and they sort of splay out. I never thought about planting a lily or two close by and that the lily would grow up through the boughs. I have a Silk Road somewhere in the yard but don't know where. Still waiting for many to bloom. I have a few possibilities just judging by the form (tall, slender leaves, downward pointing buds. That is a hoot that it grew so well in pots. Can't say it was just maturing as you had it in the ground for years. Maybe it likes confined spaces. Either way it is gorgeous.
Mary,
Here is the placement of the lilies relative to the baps. Ireally like the way the stems are hidden once the baps fill out. This is late April. Pic 1.
And then late July. Pic. 2
They look great with grasses too. Pic. 3
Remember when Wayside was trying to sell them for $14.95 each? I realized that they were really Judith Freeman's lilies. Then Wayside had a bunch at the end of the season, and they marked them down to $12.95 for three! And then Judith gave me one as a freebie with an order. And that's how I got my four Silk Roads. The flowers were huge last year in the pots. I have a few new grasses and baps and would like to get this effect again.
Funny, originally I didn't like them. But I just love the look of them "floating " in the air.
Oh, they're lovely. I moved all of my lilies out of the mini-fridge too late, and many of them produced leaves but no flowers, with some notable exceptions, primarily trumpets and orienpets. It's so nice to see yours.
I've already moved quite a few. I found that Regale, Anastasia, Silk Road and Silver Sunburst bloom wonderfully in either sun or sun and part shade, which gave me the chance to move others to full sun. It's funny - I used to be terrified of moving plants. I've moved some three times to get it right. With enough soil, they don't know the diference!
Sooooo nice to see your lilies!
I know what you mean. I have lost several that I have moved. Probably due to my errors in timing and placement. Sometimes due to getting antsy in the spring and deciding they were dead when they were just gathering for the spring burst. I have Anastasia and Silk Road but they haven't opened yet so not sure where I put them.
Oh, I can't talk. I had a rose Heritage in a pot, and I pulled it out too soon and it has lost all but one stem. It's pretty stupid looking, and I have to hope that it will eventually branch. The one at the house is a glorious, multistemmed beauty.
Great photo's everyone. Thanks!
It does!
I agree!
That is a nice shot! What a beauty!
