Thanks Donnamack. Its really a welcome sight after this spring when I ran out 4 nights in a row to cover emerged lilies.

I planted these little red lilies a couple years ago, but this is the first year they have really put out many blooms. I've looked through my orders for the last several years, but don't find anything that sounds like them (maybe some of you who are more familiar with lily varieties and names will recognize it).

I shouldn't call them 'little' - they are about 4' tall, but the blooms are small. In retrospect, I should not have planted them. The stems are so weak each one needs to be staked and the blooms, while quite lovely (an intense, dark burgundy) when seen up close, are so dark they are almost invisible in the border, unless you catch them in the sunlight, as I did, this morning.

Looking through my orders, I see I've planted LOTS of lilies over the years. Some have been successful and remain strong winners (the large trumpet lilies seem to get bigger each year), others have dwindled or were poor performers that got edited out. Things are just starting to open, so I'm looking forward to a colorful year.

ge,

And wasn't it worth it!!!???

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Leawood,

Trumpets are winners. I have a lot of them and the only "problem" is finding a place to put the extras. I have never lost an Emerald Temple, White Henryi, Amethyst Temple or Silver Sunburst. You can't find the last two anymore. Interestingly, I bought Silver Sunburst from Old House Garden, and he has stopped offering it because he can't find a grower. I currently have at least a dozen in the garden, a dozen at the old house, and have given a dozen to friends.

When orienpets came into style, they seem to have been at the expense of trumpets.

I love OTs, but the trumpets are still my favorites.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I'm with you!!!!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Well, yes, Donna, ornamental grasses and trumpet lilies, LOL.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thats why I made the effort.I just knew what was at stake .

Leawood, KS(Zone 5b)

Yellow trumpet opened today - it almost looks salmon. Yellow Turks Cap lilies (Lilium Tenuifolium) are opening today also.

Beautiful blooms everyone. Donna, I have to agree about the trumpets. This is my first year with them, and I absolutely love the, the height, scent, and all, and I don't mind having to stake them. They're just gorgeous, I'm going to have to add more to my collection for the scents. I love a fragrant garden. Here are a few more pictures from the last few days.

This is Citronella, planted in a bed in front by the sidewalk. I find the texture and the shape of the blooms fascinating from the front and the back.

I love the downward facing lily in the last photo. It is as though it's hiding its charm.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Donna. Here is a lily labelled as Tiger Pink. It's shorter than I expected, but it was only planted in April, and blooming already.

In contrast, Orientpet Shocking, which has been in for a few years, has lost it's mind and is truly shocking in how it's multplied, has grown to over 6ft this year. I can't wait for these blooms to open.

Although it has no scent, I have really enjoyed Asiatic Endless Love, that bloomed for weeks here. The color a subtle cream/pale yellow.

Very nice showing of lilies, Cem!

What a cute combo, Jo. Is Matrix supposed to be that short? Or should I say is Salmon Classic supposed to be that tall, LOL.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Haaaaaa. Matrix is supposed to be twice as tall.Salmon Classic is the right size. Nothing is as it was last year except the weeds are the same size and lots of'em.

Chicago, IL(Zone 6a)

I have been out of town for a few days and I returned home to a sea of Lilium regale. These lilies are more beautiful, fragrant and much taller than I ever would have imagined for first year stems. Many are 4-5 feet tall. I can't wait to see what they will do next year! If you look closely, there are several stems of 'Invasion' in this bed which are forming nice candelabras of buds.

Here is another neighboring patch of Lilium regale with Allium 'Ambassador' seed heads and a small view of some of my EarthBoxes with vegetables (the trellises). They are not really visible, but there are stems of 'Silk Road' popping up throughout this bed as well.
