Some good news and bad news here for me again. I found one of our chickens dead yesterday afternoon, went in to check for eggs and she was laying face down in the coop. I know when they get broody they don't eat or drink, no signs of sickness before that. We lost one a few months ago the same way. I don't dare tell Sophie yet, she has a science project in school tomorrow and needs to have a clear head. I'll tell her on Wednesday.

Good news is we found a puppy. A black male in NY, a bit above our price range but convinced my husband the bathroom redo can wait awhile and promised not to b!ch about it! Just have to go over the contract and put down my deposit. I won't post any pics until it's "official" but he is real sweet!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yo yo Ronnie.. you poor thing.. so happy about the puppy.. will keep my fingers crossed.. so sorry about the chickens.. will pray Sophie will not take it too hard

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I have my fingers crossed that all will go smoothly for your puppy, Ronnie. No doubt Sophie will be a wiser person because of all her experiences with animals.

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

I'm glad you found a puppy. WHen you get a contract signed I'd be curious in what part of NY.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks guys!
I sure hope so Rosemary, sometimes I wonder if I did then a disservice passing along my love for nature/animals gene. Funny that neither of my boys married someone "like" me as far as that goes! LOL
One of the biggest compliments I had was Sophie and Luci's mom (my DIL) saying they could have never have had what I gave them if they had gone to daycare. Makes it worthwhile even with the heart breaks.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Doug they are located in West Winfield, NY. It should take us about 4-1/2 hours to get there. Is that near you?

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

West Windfield is about 45 miles from me.

Thomaston, CT

Sorry about the hen.....hope things work out with the dane puppy....isn't it nice when DILs say something so nice?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Doug is actually in my home town, and we took a 9th grade earth science class together.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

It's official here is my new baby at two weeks...we should be able to pick him up the beginning of may!

Congrats!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh yeah!!!!! how exciting!!!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I can't wait! It's going to be a long few weeks.
We will tell the girls tomorrow about their chicken and then I think we will tell them about the puppy. I don't think I can keep it a secret that long. This way they can see the pics as he grows.

The only condition Lou gave me was he would finalize the name...I'll let him think that for a while yet...

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

awwww too cute, congrats

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yeah Ronnie!!!! So glad you found a puppy!!!!!! I think telling the girls about the puppy will help with the healing process, they have lost much lately.

Thomaston, CT

Oh, what a cutie pie! I would love a puppy!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I love the blaze on his chest.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The 'blaze' resembles a dog wearing a hat! Nose pointing up to the left.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

http://now.msn.com/now/0328-Dog-saves-life.aspx This is one smart dog!

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

I bet the cute factor wore off after 5 minutes.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh I can deal with that.. barking for an hour.. comes with yorkieville .. and that will make me nuts.. the howling was just freaky.. last night she barked at me because my bun came loose and flopped over my shoulder.... guess she thought something was trying to get me.. LOL

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

Mine has taken to bugging me until I go to the kitchen if there is any kind of pan that he thinks he wants to lick.

Allison- 2 years ago we were at the farm working in the yard with our puppies (8 months old then) in their crate in the house. A pack of coyotes were in the woods close to the house howling. Our girls started howling along with them. The coyotes stopped howling but the girls kept on. It was really something. They have never done it since. I wonder if hope was hearing howling that you couldn't hear, like our girls. It is freaky when they revert to their genetic roots so easily.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

it's possible... there are lots of dogs including a beagle down the street.. Hope always seems like she wants to go play with them.. sometimes running back and fourth crying that she wants to go out.. but the beagle is not a nice dog.. he broke off his leash one day and he went after Lily we had to break them up.. after that I keep away

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh and you can see the fence around the pot.. Hope used to stand on top of it to get a better view.. dig in there.. soil everywhere.. talk about making me mental .. the fence helps.. but once in a while she will still try

Thomaston, CT

Terriers are terrors! Love them though.....

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Ronnie, such wonderful news about the new puppy. I bet you can't wait. He's adorable! Sorry about your chickens. Hope Sophie won't take it too hard. Maybe the news of the puppy will soften the blow.

Sherrie, Mrs. Molly and Mr. G look great together. Love the picture. They are both good looking dogs.

Loving the warmth here in VA but I miss the other kind of warmth I get from my pets......homesick for my furr-babies. :(

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I'm sure they miss you too Celeste.

Sophie was funny at first when we told her about the puppy, didn't seem happy. I finally got out of her that she was afraid she would stop remembering and loving Atticus. I told her because we loved Atty so much and how he taught us to love, he would want us to give that to a new dog. She finally came around and was thrilled that she got to tell her little sister who was ecstatic about it. She was glad too that we were getting a different color because when she saw the one that looked like Atticus she would be sad. OH the emotions of a 6 year old! Their mother barely got in the door when they bombarded her with puppyness!

I was hoping that the puppy news would distract them from getting new chicks...not a chance...luckily they are pretty local and easy on the pocketbook.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

What a sweetheart Sophie is....but with that name I shouldn't be surprised. ^_^

South Hamilton, MA

changing color if possible is a good idea.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

That's so cute, Ronnie! I'm sure the kids are going to love the new addition. I can't wait to find out what his name is gonna be.

Here are some pics from last weeks of Patches.
