Because I am a type 2 diabetic I have had all sorts of tests,MRI of my heart,Pulmunary tests,Ultrasound of my heart Stress tests etc.Because I believe "line 2" of the diabetic profile says" may have heart disease" and "line 3" says Kidneys disease. It never ends.
This is my theory based on how I am treated when visiting the doc. He sits in front of a terminal and conjurs what has gone on and whats about to be prescribed.
As usual I try to simplify the disease to get a better grasp of whats going on.
but after 26 years I have seen meds change as well as diets. News!!!! sugar is allowed now ut in small amounts.
I was on the max. dose of Avandia which over years has been known to cause heart attacks and strokes .It is now off the market due to class action law suits.

Okay. But diabetes is a serious disorder and can result in all those things you mentioned, so it sounds reasonable to have more tests than the average person has. Contrary to what many seem to believe, docs don't get kickbacks for tests. Wish they did!
I dont believe they get kickbacks either. I have core beliefs about my body thart are compiled from being in it for 76 years, part of the belief goes to the lives of my forefathers who lived into their late 80's.
Iguess I was just trying to make the point for "self " knowlege where ones health is concerned.
I wont be lead around by the nose as far as certain diet restrictions are concerned. I agree it is a serious disease and many succumb no matter how stringent they are about diet.
Many succumb because they dont change eating and excersize habits along with medication.I believe I have been well served by the medical community in that reguard. My doc took me off of Avandia after 10 years on it.My ankles were swelling. Since new discoveries have come along I am glad he did.
Yep, diabetes can lead to a lot of other medical diseases. Neuropathy, heart problems, vision problems, dental problems, kidney problems, the list goes on and on. My son has only had type 1 for 3 1/2 years now. So far, so good, no concerns of other issues at this time, however, I'm sure as time progresses, and this disease starts to really take its toll on his body, we will be adding more specialists to our list of dr visits. I just thank our lucky stars that, for his age, his A1C results have remained fairly consistant and within normal ranges for a child his age with diabetes, ever since he was diagnosed and put on insulin. I've been known to fight with our pediatricians on various issues regarding my kids, including endocrinologists who want to make too drastic of changes to his insulin dosages (I like taking baby steps lol), but I can honestly say, if they told me that I need to start taking him to see other specialists, even just for a specialized check up, no real reason or cause for alarm, I don't think I could argue with them. I'm very much aware of how serious this disease can be. And, I think my son is starting to understand some aspects of how serious it can be as well, if we grow lax on his management.
LOL I have to say.... I LOOOOVVVVEEE that you made the comment "News!!!! sugar is allowed now ut in small amounts." ge! There are SO many misconceptions about diabetes, all types, that get blasted out to people in the media (and yes, even by doctors!) that it drives me batty! My family and I have done, and continue to do, a lot of raising awareness about diabetes. And when I say "even doctors" spew misconceptions.... I am speaking from experience on this one.
When my son was 3 months old, I would give him a little rice formula in his cereal, not enough to make it very thick, but just enough to thicken it up a little to help him feel fuller longer (he was, and always has been a GOOD eater LOL!). I took him in for a check up appointment between his 3month and 4 month "birthday", and of course, as usual, they asked me if i was giving him any cereal in his bottle. I told them yes, and gave them my reasonings. The pediatrician had a caniption (SP?) fit on me! Telling me all sorts of things, including it could cause him to have diabetes! I said, no... you need to be genetically predisposed to diabetes. They argued with me, of course.
Now, on the flip side... when I had my daughter 18 1/2 months after my son was born (yep, my munchkins are 18 1/2 months apart exactly LOL!) and she was struggling with acid reflux... what did they tell me to do? Put cereal in her formula! She was MUCH younger than my son was when I did that with him! So, of course, like a good mommy, I said... well, I thought you said that by introducing infant cereal earlier than 4 months of age, it could cause the child to become diabetic... so, is this really a good option?
Then, when my son was diagnosed with type 1 when he was 3 1/2 years old, we were sitting in the hospital room with him at childrens hospital of pittsburgh, waiting for the endocrinologist to come in to teach us how to take care of our son after he left the hospital... of course my very first question to them, and to their dietician, was "could us starting him on infant cereal before 4 months of age have caused him to become diabetic?" It was so hard for me to ask that because I was crying uncontrollably over the shock of his diagnosis. They all informed me that "FOOD doesn't cause diabetes" It took me a while to come to terms with and accept that. So yep, any time these pediatricians tell me "dont do this because it could cause this", I just ask them if there is scientific evidence backing up that claim, or is that just their personal opinion on the matter. Anymore though, I've gotten into the habit of, anything more serious than just the common cold, flu, ear infection and strep, I turn to WebMD.com and search possible causes of any symptoms my kids are experiencing, because honestly, our pediatricians cant seem to diagnose anything more serious than those 4 things properly. (with the exception of his diabetes). I mean, when my son was a baby, I don't know how many times Ive taken him to that pediatrician over yeast infections... *I* knew they were yeast infections, and i told them thats what it was and I needed more of the cream for it... but half the time they would tell me its not and its just a regular diaper rash, put desitine on it and he'll be fine... then i'd just have to turn around 2-3 days later to take him back to the pediatrician for the same thing because the infection got worse with the application of diaper cream, and finally they'd diagnose it correctly!
No, doctors may not get any kick backs for tests being done, but they sure as heck make a lotta money for dragging you into their office as much as they can! Don't get me wrong, I know there are a lot of very good doctors out there... I think I just have a sore spot for the most part when it comes to doctors (and schools) because we have been burned so many times. If I wasn't so nervous about changing pediatricians (and possibly landing with even more headaches from another bad doctor) I would have changed years ago. I can tell you countless "horror stories" about my experiences with our current pediatricians... including one misdiagnosis (that again, should have been an easy diagnosis) that lead my daughter to needing surgery. This is why, anymore, before scheduling an appointment for my kids for anything other than minor illnesses, I do my research first.
Sorry for the length, somewhat off topic, post lol. Just had to get some of that off my chest I guess LOL!
Luckily I had no children with diabetes, just my own type 2. Noone in my family has had it; so I think my own fault cause of not watching my weight after child #3 & then it took years to develop. No insilin, thank heavens. I have learned to fight doctors on some things. But they talk to me instead of staring into a computor. One is retiring which is a big pain.
The only family history we have is type 2, but my son is the first Type 1 anyone on either of our sides are aware of with it. But, then again, my mom was adopted too, so we're not entirely sure about her biological parent's medical background either.
But you know, they are making some advancements in medical studies on type 2 too, and finding that weight gain isn't ALWAYS the cause of type 2. In fact, I just read an article not too long ago about a woman who lived an active lifestyle had a healthy weight, ate well.... who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Its not just the overweight that are suseptable to type 2. I have a few slim friends who contracted it in their 50's/
Looks like Brady won't be bringing Gisele to any team parties anytime soon.
blown out of proportion
Great for him! ^_^
!
Sometimes if your spouse is getting insulted, you don't have the guts, not to fight back.
That is true ge, its not only the overweight people who get type 2. That's the point I was trying to make =)
But also, its not only the elderly that get it either. I've read many articles over the last few years of healthy, young, adults being diagnosed with it as well.
I guess my point is, people see all over various media sources about how obesity can cause diabetes (often times not distinguishing which type, ultimately confusing people with no experience with it on the differences of each type), but these same media sources fail to truly educate people of the truth about them, warning signs, and seriousness of the disease. If anything, I wish I seen more media outlets stressing about the warning signs to watch for of diabetes. Early detection truly can be a life saver. When my son was diagnosed, I had NO IDEA what was going on, and surely didn't think about it possibly being diabetes! When he was finally diagnosed, they told us that they estimated had we waited even one week longer, he could have been comatose due to ketoacidosis. Scary stuff! I just think that the media has such a great advantage to use their sources for good, educating others, on a variety of illnesses and diseases, that they should use it. They already discuss many of these diseases and illnesses anyway, why not throw in some better facts and give their viewers/readers an idea on what to watch for.
Ok, off topic a bit but, I just noticed, DG has a chatroom??? Is this new too or am I just not very observant? LOL!
it's been there for years... but only open now and then.. could be easy to miss
I thought Forums took care of chat.
Ahhh gotcha!
Yeah, forums take care of a lot of the chat I think too, but I also like the idea of the chatroom, if for no other reason, just because, personally, i've only come across a handful of just general chat threads/forums just to chit chat about non-gardening things. Then again, I am still fairly new to DG and am finding new things on here every day LOL!
What ever happened to the "Stay at home mom" forum? As I was browsing the forum sections that I hadn't seen before, I saw a link that was supposed to take you to a forum titled "Stay at home mom", but when I clicked it, it just kept taking me back to my home tab.
Maybe she went to work!! ^_^
LMAO!!
There are a lot of different threads right here that aren't garden related. Just chat away!
amen
well the chat is more like IM, you don't have to wait for a reply. dropped in a couple times, not many use it
LOL like i said, I'm still coming across new forums and stuff on DG. I've been a "member" of DG for coming up on a year, and all this time, I primarily just used it for garden talk. I JUST came across this forum/thread a few days ago actually LOL! The website and variety of forums is just so big! I must say though, the friendly, helpful atomosphere I find here at DG has been what has kept me coming back more than any other gardening site/forum/club/group I've joined!
Yeah, I did notice that, flow. In fact, I popped in there this morning and there wasnt ANYONE on LOL!
You're pretty much guaranteed to find more activity on this forum than in chat.
Yep, we're chatty.....good news for a change....my friend Pat's PET scan came back ...doctor removed all the cancer..also my stepson from Maine had a knee replaced yesterday & is doing well......
