I learned something this morning, putting on warm socks from the dryer is nice, putting on warm pants with hot zippers is not!
offee Break #73
Since I read that info on the health benefits of cinnamon, I'm going to try this: "In a study at Copenhagen University, patients given half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder combined with one tablespoon of honey every morning before breakfast had significant relief in arthritis pain after one week and could walk without pain within one month." I'll let you guys know if I get any positive results.
BTW, it isn't that a spoonful of cinnamon is harmful to your health, but it's the fact that the kids swallow it all in one go, and that's where the problems come in. Also, here are some side effects of cinnamon: http://www.healthdiaries.com/eatthis/side-effects-of-cinnamon.html
You won't find me texting on the toilet!
Victor, no time to read the article on plants.
LOL @ you comment, Debi!
Karen
Ouch, Deb!
made me laugh debi - sorry for your pain:)
Happy Groundhog day

Thank you chuck & Joanne. After all we have been having a springy winter.
I found predicting too easy this year. Lets see what Phil says.Of course he will have a shadow from all the TV lights.
Phil says winter. TV does make a difference.
Ouch, Deb.....but I like the socks idea! I know we'll have an early spring, because winter was so great!
:-)
Ugh - some of the dreadful predictions for healthcare are already coming true.
My wife got a letter from Medicare telling her they 'notice' that she prescribes more braces, etc., than other physiatrists (rehab docs) in her area. Duh - most rehab docs in her area are strictly pain and musculoskeletal. She, on the other hand, treats many disabled patients. (She is double boarded in spinal cord injury.) This includes MS, spinal cord, muscular distrophy, cerebral palsy, etc. Did they bother to consider this? No. This is what happens when beaurocrats, with no medical training whatsoever, are in charge. Scary future.
Scary Victor
"you know your in the country when traffic is caused by a tractor"
Not in the country, but, on the cruise I was just on the traffic jams were caused by scooters and walkers.
Yes, Victor, scary thoughts indeed.
Brian out to pick up some beer?!!
LOL Nope, not tonight, he hurt his back. He doesn't need any beer, he has Flexeral!
Oh no. Hope he feels better.
Me too, he's useless now! LOL
Hee hee!!
Medicare needs lessons in medical needs. Regular insurance co. just as bad.
Private insurance usually follows Medicare in what is covered, reimbursements, etc. That makes it even scarier.
sounds like there will be some red tape that will be corrected victor - to bad she has to go through the hassle - unfortunately that is one way how they catch doctors that are over prescribing to earn extra $$.
Same scenario in education...just because these jerks attended school, they think they can tell teachers how to run a school.....
Good luck Sherrie!
Doubt it, Bill. This 'oversight' is here to stay. Care will be rationed - no two ways about it.
Rooting for you, Sherrie!
that glass seems to be half full their victor - where is that italian fire when needed:)
as soon as there is a medical audit and all the care diagnosed verified there should be no issues.
and in your first statement i did not see any mention of care rationed - that will not fly with the american public
Interview, interview, interview!!!
More and more paperwork, which will require someone else to work in the office. I feel like a frog being slowly heated in a pot, not knowing it's too hot, til it's too late.
On another note, I don't know where this year went. Hard to believe it was a year ago that mom died. So, today, I ordered my veggie seeds.
The problem Victor is talking about with Medicare also is mirrored in how other government sectors operate with their last resort services that don't qualify for reimbursement. Work logs and reports are monitored. Complain about a problem that affects client care, and you've triggered an audit of your work. It's not that the standards necessarily make sense outside their own logic, so useful and important work can still "fail" the audit. The broom might sweep the problem clean when there's a pubic debacle of some kind, and at least the whistleblower has a paper trail that might protect them.
Jan, can't believe the year has gone by for you...hope you are feeling some peace.....
Very peaceful, RD, very peaceful.
Bill, hate to shock you, but it already is being rationed. The lengths of stay allowed in acute care have been decreased dramatically. You cannot even get in-patient rehab for a knee replacement now. You go to sub-acute - usually a nursing home. The only way to get in-patient is to have BOTH knees done at one time, which is murder - especially for older people. Another one - specifically in rehab - they have greatly limited what patients can even be admitted to the rehab unit in the hospital. Things like cardiac, pulmonary, cancer rehab and general medical de-conditioning are no longer permitted! These are but two examples.
And that is just from the services provided point of view. There is also the reimbursement point of view. And that is going in only one direction. What will happen is older docs who are lucky enough to have made decent money before all these changes will simply stop taking Medicare patients. It's already happening. The surgeon who did my dad's rotator cuff no longer does. Also, there will be a flood of retiring docs in the coming years. Lots of experience will leave the system.
did not know you were referring to rehab at nursing homes - i have no problem with getting out of the hospital bed and freeing it up for someone else - thought you were talking about month's long wait for procedures like i have heard about in England
No - not yet. That will come. There is a 14 person board, appointed by the prez, that will dictate what is covered and what is not.
The rehab rules I referred to are for hospitals, not nursing homes.
One more item - despite all the talk of encouraging innovation and cutting edge tech, part of the healthcare law which will go into effect in 2013 levies a tax on medical devices. The goal is to raise 20 billion from this. So guess what device companies will do - take the jobs elsewhere. The stupidity is mind-boggling.
Speaking of crappy practices due to medical insurance companies, my friend Gretchen has been dealing with a lot of problems with benign tumors and polyps in her uterus for some years now. Lately her periods have been extremely heavy, and she gets very dizzy, probably from the loss of blood. Anyhow, the doc gave her hormone pills to help get rid of the polyps. She's taken the medication before, and it makes her sick. She discussed with him having surgery to have a hysterectomy done. He told her he would have to try different meds, all of which have hormones and make her sick. Then she would have to have a DNC done (she had this done before, and the problem came back). Finally he told her his hands were pretty much tied due to the insurance companies. They pretty much dictate what can be done. They won't allow a hysterectomy without doing the other stuff first, and then they won't do it for a woman her age (late 30's), as she might decide she wants kids someday (she is dead set against having kids). Pretty awful when insurance won't let a person decide what is best for their own health.
Oh, Sherrie, if that's the job you want, I sure hope you get it. Crossing my fingers and toes for ya.
Jan, interesting that you made that statement about the frog in the boiling water. I've heard it many times and always wondered if it was true. Well, I decided to look it up, and turns out it's false. Just a little trivia for you. Here's what I found: http://www.snopes.com/critters/wild/frogboil.asp

Lots of people will be drinking out of these come Superbowl Sunday!

Love those insurance companies....even though a bone density showed my hip to be at the critical stage for breaking, I had to wait 2 years for another test....happy to say the meds worked, & I'm out of the critical range, but having to wait 2 years to find that out wasn't fun, especially since I like to walk in the woods.....always kept my phone with me, of course....had to hope I had reception where I was.....
