NE Pets forum #19

Sorry for you Celeste, I know how you feel.

Just tired on this end. Whishy Washy day. Nerves on end.

it's so hard when they can't get out and run Sherrie

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Sherrie, I'm very happy for you and your new Molly. I know she went to a good home, and now Mr. G will have a playmate. I'm confused, though. You mentioned first that Molly is a pit, but then said later she was Dingo and Chow mix. ????

Celeste, how awful! So young, and already needing surgery. I'll be praying for you guys.

OH No Celeste ((((Cyrus)))) prayers coming♥

I forgot to mention earlier that Jerry went to the vet today for shots. He was fine getting the shots, but he gave them problems with taking his temp. Then it was much worse with getting his nails trimmed. They had to muzzle him and have two techs hold him down. He was screaming the whole time. And they didn't even cut the quick. Poor Jerry. What an ordeal.

I had a groomer that did Bear's nails by clipping them when he was standing. When he was busy smelling everything in the shop she'd clip a nail, he'd move off to smell something else. She got them all clipped in about five minute. The neighbor and I've done them the same way and I'm done them one nail at a time when he's busy doing something else.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the pros impress me how quick they can cut nails.. I have tried many times.. but not happy about it.. not comfortable at all with it

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

I think some of it is that ones own dog interacts with you different than a vet or groomer.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I tried with a friend to do Jerry's nails. He was not as bad as at the vet, but after that experience I don't know if it will be different next time. The vet suggested I come back in a month to have them done, as if you do it more often, then the quick won't grow as long, and you can get them shorter, which is supposedly better for them. I will try with Jerry myself next time, but if he puts up a fight like he did at the vet, then I'll have to take him back there.and let the pros handle it.

that is why I was trying.. and trying to save money.. I am bad getting there nails done as often as I should.. Eros and Lily are good.. Hope & Jily are a challenge and I just don't move quick enough

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I can understand the challenge, Allison, believe me!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know this is going to sound mean... but I figured the dogs are always going under the blankets when they sleep.. so how bad is it??.. so I put a sheet over Hopes face so she couldn't see the clippers coming.. it actually worked out good.. I got through them all with less resistance.. Jily on the other hand.. no winning with her.. and they are so darn small I am always afraid to hold on too tight .. but she just yanks her foot away over and over... might be worth just taking her monthly and doing the others myself .. I usually just stand there mouth gaping when I see how fast & easy they can do it

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The Keeshond we had was a little princess she would actually give me her paws to have them clipped

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh geeze.. don't I wish

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Allison, the sheet over her face I don't think is mean at all. Doesn't hurt her, and if it makes it easier, why not? Might try that with Jerry and see how I make out.

Patches doesn't care to have her nails clipped, but she doesn't make too much fuss about it. Thank God for that.

Thanks everyone for the prayers, I really need this sling to work.
I have been having a really bad time with this because he was with me when he got hurt.
Cyrus and I were on a walk/run the other day and we both slipped on the ice. I caught myself but Cyrus legs slid out from underneath him and he slid. He bounced right back up, never cried out or whimpered so I thought all was OK. I noticed him limping a bit the next day like it was a little sore, so I continued to keep my eye on him. Sat. night it seemed like he was favoring it more, and on Sunday morning I could see it wasn't looking right when he walked. His left hip seemed swollen and higher than the other and he flinched when I rubbed it....picked up the phone right then and called the vet, took him in. You know the rest of the story...he goes in this morning to be set and placed in a sling for 2 weeks.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

after healing Jily's ACL for months.. 2 weeks will go faster than you think.. the first one he will be so tired from meds .. week 2 might be a bit harder.. do you have a crate for him?.. can't blame yourself for him getting hurt that's for sure.. it happens ... even to us human kind {{{Celeste}}}

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Glad you weren't hurt Celeste, don't be too hard on yourself (easier said than done)

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Glad you weren't hurt Celeste. You'll be able to be Cyrus' watchdog, guardian angel, caretaker. My heart goes out to you.

Oh, no...don't blame yourself, Pixie...accidents happen....he'll be fine.....Suey goes to the local groomer to have her nails clipped ....she never complains & the groomer loves her.......

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I clip my cats nails myself although the vet tech will do it for free during a visit. I've noticed that she doesn't bother with my cats anymore unless I ask because they are usually under control. If I bring in one of the strays - I ask not to have their nails clipped because they need their fighting weapons.

Celeste - stuff happens! The worst case senario is that the sling doesn't work to get it back in joint and they go in and take the ball off the leg bone and put it back in a sling and it forms a false joint that works just fine.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Ya Celeste don't blame yourself!!!

My keeshond probably would have loved to have her nails painted she was such a princess, LOL

my ex keeshond would chew off the nail polish just to get something to eat !

Xena was part Dingo & part Chow.

Cool looking dog

Thank you all for the kind words, I can't help feeling guilty even though I know it was an accident.
Cyrus is home now, his leg is in a sling very tight to his body. He will need to hop on 3 legs for 7 -10 days. Wish us luck and keep those prayers coming please that it heals fine.

You bet, Pixie!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You got it! Maybe the bunny can help?!! ^_^

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Sherrie, thanks for clearing that up for confused old me.

Celeste, like everyone else said, you can't blame yourself for Cyrus' accident. Things happen. It wasn't anything you did or didn't do. Slipping on ice happens a lot, and injuries from it are common, cause it happens so fast that there's little time to brace yourself. Or you try bracing yourself and make it worse by the way you land. It just happens too fast. Hey, at least Cyrus is young and should heal quickly. Poor guy. Praying for you two.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know being on three legs didn't slow Jily down.. she ran just as fast on 3 before the surgery

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Glad Cyrus is all done, keeping you and him in my prayers♥

Got Atticus' ashes back today :(

Just now reading about Cyrus's icecapade, Celeste, and you certainly can't let yourself feel responsible, any more than thinking that Cyrus was responsible for your fall. I'm just so glad you weren't hurt too, and it sounds like Vyrus will now be fine. Animals adapt so well to temporary mobility challenges, and I think he will amaze you. Hope you both get through the two weeks well.

Sherrie- remember when Bailey and Carli were having a ball running circles around me as teeny puppies? Well, they are the best little girls now, and I'd be lost without them. Your Molly and Mr. G are just so happy to have a playmate, and they will begin to settle down, so just try to enjoy their happiness and feel good that you have brought them together. I'm smiling here picturing their antics!

Hugs, Ronnie....feeling sad for you.

Hello to everyone...not feeling very well here, so not writing much, but keeping an eye on you guys from much too sunny and HOT Florida. :)
