Great photos, John...love the oriole....saw an eagle today that was very motheaten....had lost quite a few primary feathers....
Just saw a mama cardinal in my garden yesterday afternoon. My birdfeeder is not cleaned out yet, though. and I have been watching 6 swans in the town reservoir over the past two months and seen several wild turkeys up close and personal also.
Martha
we have a oriole family here as well. i think the nest is in the tree we look at from our office window. blue birds are very active out there and seem to have gotten use to us as they fly all over the yard and have several perches they constantly use - one is on the railing of our deck.
Some jerk in a neighboring town shot & killed our touring bear, Knucklehead, so I probably can put my feeder up again....this guy was a felon, wasn't supposed to have a gun, but he said he was sick of having the bear in his garage...how about closing the garage door? Anyway, he was arrested, but that doesn't help Knucklehead.
That shot looks like a sparrow not an Oriole
Wow that guy is in super trouble isn't he?
I took my feeders down cause the pool will be going in where I had them, I hadn't refilled them anyway since the grackles came back :( I do have the house wren that comes back every year and momma dove is still sitting on her eggs
My new wren house went up a month ago....no wrens yet :>(
sorry Jen I was babbling this morning.. said I couldn't get a shot of the oriel
That's sad about the guy killing the bear...
I've yet to see an Oriole around here, I used to see them at the mountains a lot but never one in my yard.
oh ok, I get it
Would love to see an Oriole here
Me, too, Jen. No wrens here either.
Poor Knucklehead. I doubt he gets enough outrage generated by the district attorney.
Folks are very upset...Knucklehead had a circular route through 6 towns...we all knew him....he wasn't aggressive, but he did like to get into garages which was a no-no.....
At least he had a following to speak up for him. When a small brown bear was sighted in Lexington a few years ago, people freaked out and wanted him out dead or alive. The coyotes were already preying upon little pets. I'd be more afraid of the occasional lynx attack and I haven't heard of any around here for many years,
and of course I had the wrong lens on the camera.. but this guy was showing off or something???.. vulture??
took a couple of shots.. ran back in the house to change lenses... and still couldn't get a clear one.. all the way up the street.. and a foggy lens from the humid nasty day out there
small lens shots
Cool! We used to call those Turkey Vultures.
I still do too
Yes, that's what he is...he's trying to dry his wings.....
WOW he looks like he should be on top of a haunted mansion...that is sooooooo super creepy!!!!!!!!!
agreed!!.. had to see my face seeing that out the patio door
The noisy crows are migrating through in big bunches. I report this because two flocks flew over my head while I was reading in my garden yesterday morning. and while not in my yard, I saw a Canada goose family unit along the road while I was out driving yesterday, Mom, Dad and three cute babies. Watch out for them and be careful when you are driving in the next months.
Martha
A couple stopped traffic on my way home from the farm today to pick up a turtle & place it in the grass.....wish more folks would be so considerate...I stopped & thanked them.....
Put up a hummingbird feeder this year and feel so blessed to have such beatiful visitors. For several years I have planted anything that is claimed to attract them.Between the feeder and plants they are in the yard most of the time .Suspect they are nesting in a big maple.
I plant many varieties of salvia...that draws them in....
