Thanks Rosemary!
Spending spree #9
Maybe the witch finally got it??
LOL...good one, Victor....Bill, the lobelia you gave me is doing great....seems to love that spot, although it's not very damp. How about a purplish-red phlox, Jen...that would be blooming late summer....
Bill, that Lobelia is slowly petering out, then I read that that one species is short lived(cardinalis)(figures)
Funny Victor!
Celeste that is gorgeous
Failed to mention for the Lobelia replacement the area only gets morning sun
Thats exactly what the heuchera 'Black Beauty' needs!!
Many shrub choices. Weigela, physocarpus, etc.
Shrubs too big for that area....as it is I'd like to rip out the rhodies that they put too close to the house...ugh
Not too big at all. Weigela as small as one foot. Midnight something.
You can prune the rhodie down to size.
I cut them down 1/3 every year but with our acidic soil they are MONSTERS
oh yeah sorry it didn't register w/my brain but the weigela flowers aren't burgandy just the foliage
Barberry.
You crack me up....trying to turn me into a foliage gardener?
That is an idea though
Foliage is like a trusted friend. Reliable, long-lasting and solid. Flowers are fleeting, get messed up by rain and often require deadheading.
oh now he's getting poetic
Did you see today's bloom?

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! I know Victor won't with all those layers
Actually, I do like that.

Need to find out who carries them...are they grown from seed?
I tried from seed... and they did not germinate ... might have to try again
need to stratify them? or soak them first?
I tried for 3 years to germinate Prairie Gentian....followed the directions...nothing! Then I bought a plant at WFF one summer.....even though it was in bloom, it languished....I'm thinking if that flower is native to the prairie, it must hate rain, something we on the East Coast get plenty of, so they aren't for our climate....how's that for rationalizing?
That could be in....maybe if I put it in my "Arizona" hot and dry backyard it will work
Jen I think surface sow.. warm to germinate and then cooler to grow.. might have to google it.. been a while.. but I think the seeds can take a long time to wake up
So def need to start inside with a heat mat or lights? Which I don't have....NUTS................ I need stuff I can wintersow, looking thru Select Seeds catalog and DROOLING
Nice.
select seeds is a tempting site!!!
Allison it's one of my favorites!
two more catalogs showed up yesterday - park seeds and roots &rizomes - still circling and bending corners - unlikely to buy anything though
I do that as well, Bill! Jen, nice color on the rhodie.....I'm thinking of adding a few hostas....one that I like is Hudson Bay....
I was looking at the bleeding hearts in Roots & Rhizomes. Do Joe Pye Weed for any siberians.
R&R has terrible ratings in WD went right in recylce bin
Never got that catalog.
Jen's really dark flowering rhodi might be good near my ac. It's nearly a blank canvas at the moment with only a Gauguin TP anywhere nearby. I also want all of Bill and Victor's shrubs to be sent to my house, but for now, I'm interested in the Goliath witchhazel for a patch that only has a Japanese black pine, Diablo ninebark and a bunch of assorted hostas astilbes and DLs so far. I want some dwarf yellow magnolia, maybe Daphne? Finally, i think this spring I'm just going to Hopkinton or Chelmsford MA to visit Weston's nursery for a selection of azaleas for my hill in back. It may be the year for annuals.
rosemary if they do not have them in chelmsford they can send them up from hopkinton - they did that for me in the fall
Thanks, Bill. Ought to be fun making the selections. Did you find any favorites there?
i went with the weston series of azaleas they bloom in late june through late July and also provide some winter color - Innocence, Lemon Drop,Lollipop,Parade, and Sparkler where the ones i got
Hey speaking of sprees, has anyone heard from Caladiums 4less?Is he having a classified this year?
Pirl said she thought it would be posted yesterday.
