Great purchases guys! I bet you won't regret it.
I'm starting to wonder if I got the best choice of Aronia --chokeberry from Avant Gardens. They do say you can modify your orders. Anyone have experience with this shrub? I bought the red-fruited kind. Supposedly people can eat the fruits of the purple one, though it gets messy on the ground, and there are other more dense cultivars too, but I wonder if they might need more sun.
Spending spree #9
Too hard through catalogs to figure out how to match viburnum dilatatum or v. plicatum torment. I did figure out how to get v. nudums matched, though by clicking 'Brandywine' at Lazy S for $10 and 'Winterthur at another for a bit more. Time for some reading and measuring. Whew. Replacing the bad-news shrubs has become a big project.
Fairweather has a good selection of vibs.
Ohhhhh yes.It takes me a long time to find what I want. I am arthritic so I only dig one hole. I dont want to re do the job because I could have spent 10 more minutes at thecomputer.
Thanks Victor. Fairweather site has already claimed my orders for witch hazels 'Angelly' and 'Quasimodo' as well as magnolia 'Golden Gift' which the Morton Arboretum especially liked for small yellows, plus Hydrangea quercifolia 'Little Honey.' I was impressed because those four weren't in stock at other sites, and they are clearly wonderful plants.
I think my problem right now is that of deciding what i can commit to doing especially for plants I don't know well yet. For some reason over the years, I always said "later" when it came to learning about viburnums. That's easily enough fixed at the library. Then I share that thought about digging that hole...Well have to save something for next year!
In spite of the temptation toward excess, it is so nice to daydream about creating a beautiful sanctuary for people and wildlife.
Rosemary k that is my intention. I share a house with DD and SIL and I love making a nice outdoor garden on thedeck for all of us for summer evenings as well as a serene place for my friends to visit and overlook the gardens.
And you have succeeded, Jo....I love your gardens!
The plants do all the work
No, it's your sense of color & design....
thanks
Just did a walk about and found Hamamelis mollis Wisley Supreme in bloom and a couple more varieties about to pop. Our snow drops continuing to bloom and I found a Spiraea thunbergi Mt. Fuji with tiny white flowers on it. One rose continues on as do some other things including a Viburnum farreri White Perfume which is still also blooming away. Weird winter. I am off to Vt now and I can guarantee that
there will be no blooms up there. I will post pictures of my winter treasures tomorrow if I have time. I am meeting with the electrician to go over my layout.
I am jealous of all the viburnum buying going on, but I need to finish buying appliances, plumbing fixtures and lighting before I pull the plant buying trigger. Patti

I lifted the same bulbs that you just purchased, Jen. Hopefully they will survive winter storage and put on their beautiful show again this summer.
Great minds think alike...
hope they survived for you
I dug mine 2 years ago and forgot about them :(
Was browsing through Garden Crossing and came across two Barberry with great names!!

Oh, you have to have 'Celeste'....it's very pretty...Patti, this might be one year when you'll have blooms for 12 months!
As I read Rosemary's post, it struck me how much alike we all are here when it comes to the temptations of bringing new plant adoptees into our fold. There's always a push-pull for me between practical needs as balanced against the frivolity of adding just one more (whatever it is that catches my eye). This year I'm into adding mini-roses down here, because they don't get as out of control as so many of my Florida plants get while we're away. I remember how pretty Kassia's minis were at her RU. So far, so good. I brought one small mini-red down with us, and I've added 3 more with a Christmas gift certif. if I can ever get around to getting my laptop in better working condition, I'd like to post some photos, but for now, I'm unable to do that on my ipad. I'm enjoying hearing about everyone's wish lists or "bought" lists!
I have wish lists, including 'Bleeding Heart' but have not bought anything.
Oh , I haven't bought anything lately either :)
It does look familiar Allison. Not sure what one is is though.
thats a beauty
must be a strong one too.. it's the only coleus to live in my basement the week the power went out and it was freezing.. I thought I was going to loose it.. but it sprang back nicely
It's a beautiful red!
Love it! Louise, I planted a Knockout rose in FL that did very well.....

Gee, i can't wait to see everything in bloom!
I have had a walking pneumonia so it meant there was time to troll the internet and read Dirr's book on viburnums. There are so many more kinds than I remember from the old midwestern farmhouse gardens. Buying the little seedlings won't be the hard part. Finishing the digging of the nasty amur honeysuckles and burning bushes to make way will be the hard part! Still, I bought 'Popcorn' and am zeroing in on some combination of 'Shasta' 'Pink Beauty' or "Rowallane' (really perfer the impossible to find child, 'Cascade' above all others --Dirr's photo made me completely drool) for a doublefile selection. Then, I'd love to make room for 'Conoy'...this isn't easy! But I'm not going to dig up the very front of the house yet this year, either!
Hope you feel better!!!

Thanks, everyone for the kind get well wishes. I was romping around at work this morning, but took the afternoon off. Those Z pack antibiotics are a wonder! Dreams about gardens to come are indeed a refuge from daily stress and strains.
Glad your feeling better Rosemary, nothing like shopping to give you a lift!
