General Discussion & Chat: Today, I am thankful for...#11
I like Kudzu .
I do, too
Me, too, but also like Amargia. :)
=========================================
Thankful today that:
While my foggy brain didn't remember to get gas on the way TO work, I didn't run out on the way home FROM work.
Got home early enough to have daylight and be comfortable while doing laundry before the cold front swoops in tonight. Oh, and that there was enough light to see to bring in container daylily seedlings. 'Posed to be mid-20s by morning.
Addams Family Values, The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), The Great Race, and Clue.
Thanks for trying , Tammy .
Thankful for healthy pets .
Today, I'm thankful for my DD getting a new phone from which she can send videos to me. The first 2 I got were of DGD Aurora. Woohoo!!!
Yea! (applause!!!)
Either name is fine or whatever you want to use.
Grateful for snowplowing crews, heat, and cars that drive well on ice.
We use Amargia on another garden website. That could cause its own confusion. Guess we will stick with kudzu. It does capture the ambiance of our region. :-)
Today K. says she is thankful for Analog magazine. A periodical that doesn’t let writers fudge on the science aspect of science fiction.
Nadine says she is thankful to have an Oriental grocery store close by.
I am just thankful for a good night’s sleep. (Jim)

Oh, wow. That photo is very "Day of the Triffids," "The Blob," we-will-take-over-your-planet B-movie science fiction.
(By most accounts) Isaac Asimov and I have the same birthday, ahem, if not the same year, of course. :D
Scary looking Kudzu!
Thankful for all the nice sunny days from 60-84 we have had for weeks. Ready for God to turn the switch to some rain. Anytime now, please. Feel guilty asking for it, since you TX'ns (and nearby) have been so dry.
Thankful Stepson is having a hauling service come and pick up the mtn of weeds from his side (he is renting space to an RV'r) and ours. Those are from last spring/summer!! Also hope they will pick up the huge pile of manure DH has been accumulating since he started cleaning the corrals last month. If manure is put into the trash company's 'green' barrel weekly it is sufficient. But it actually has to be put in there to be picked up, lol. 'Some' goes to compost, but do not want the flies that come with keeping so much of it. I need to get out there and trim some bushes/trees to add to that mtn of stuff, so it is all gone.
Thankful DH is feeling better these days. His surgeon was recommending getting exercise, like walking, and he protested he DOES NOT do that. However, he has been tending to the 2 horses that DD has no interest in any longer and is getting exercise cleaning those corrals, sometimes twice a day. He is a perfectionist in that and those corrals get CLEAN. His problem with feeling cold all the time was cured by the fact that we went through 100 gallons of propane (to the tune of $347) in one month, due to the heater being on so much and so high. Now, we do not use it at all, or just for a short time in AM to warm it up to 66. The sun kicks in then to warm it up more.
Tallulah - I always think those that live in snow zones are more used to driving in it. Years ago a group of us went up to the mountains for a fun weekend in the snow. When we approached the snowline, we put the chains we had rented onto the cars. I had a friend in my car who had lived in Kansas as an adult and had driven in snow, so I let her drive my car from that point. as we approached the small town there was some more traffic and somehow Kate ending up spinning around and went into a snow bank the snowplow had left on our side of the road. Good thing, as the slope to the lake was on the other side of the snow bank. A kind soul in a truck hooked up up and straightened us up, but some of the local folks stuck in the line behind us were yelling out "Flatlanders, go back home", lol.
Debra the Daylily lady. When I get around to finally buying and planting Daylilies (as I have thought about doing for years) you will be my go-to person!
"flatlanders" eh? That's funny - I used to live in the prairies, now live in the foothills - can see the mountains every day - beautiful! I prefer mountains..
This morning, I am thankful for...
sunshine on a cloudy day
frozen hot chocolate
jumbo shrimp
s'funny, but today I'm thankful that my DH lost his job yesterday (after 1 month......!) cuz it may mean there's a better job for him, closer to home.
I am thankful to just be alive and be able to enjoy my day. I am thankful that God is my Heavenly Father and I am His child. Luciee {;^)
"Frozen hot chocolate?" Ooookay. I'm thankful I got a lot of work done outside this week, but I'm also thankful for no-work Sundays. (Jim)
Is frozen hot chocolate like chocolate ice cream?
Today I am thankful for a lovely sunny day and some time to just futz around the house.
Tam
It is essentially taking cocoa-heavy hot chocolate mix, adding it with milk and ice in a blender and making a frappe/slushy.
Became 'famous' here:
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Frrrozen-Hot-Chocolate-Serendipitys-Best-Kept-Secret-109560
Serendipity is also the place with the Guinness World's Most Expensive Dessert: The Golden Opulence Sundae at $1,000 a pop. But their frozen hot chocolate recipe looks simple and inexpensive to make at home. Can also buy premixed versions from various sellers to which milk and ice is added. I was given some Williams-Sonoma mix one Christmas. Tasted okay, but I am exceedingly lazy when it comes to kitchen cleanup and only had the first pack. Gave away the rest so I wouldn't have to clean up the blender again. :D
Hot chocolate in any form is nice.
Quiltygirl - Glad to hear the DH is doing better.
Thankful for kleenex, musicians, and old timey music.
This afternoon, I am thankful for
Phones with that take better photos than a 10 year old Sony camera.
Hand crocheted throws that keep your feet warm over the blankets. (Thank you, Vickie :-)
Half a dozen empty gallon milk jugs to try my hand at winter sowing Echinacea and Cosmos seeds. (Thank you, Vickie!)
I am thankful this evening for,
70 degree days in the middle of January
Coke floats
Thermal label printers
Today, it's free movies at a theater and nieces who invite you to go.
Debra, try this next time you use your blender. Rinse the pitcher out as soon as you are finished using it. Fill it back up with water. Add a little dish detergent and run the blender. Rinse and repeat without the dish soap. It works for me. I love smoothies, but I hate taking the blender apart to wash it.
Today I am thankful for a soft rain. We transplanted several small trees yesterday. It was so nice of the powers that be to water everything in for me. No wrestling water hoses out to the edge of the property. Woo-hoo! ~N~
Tonight, I am thankful to have:
Hot and sour soup
Clean towels (chilly out, don't want to walk outside to do laundry. :/ )
The art of Daniel Kessler
Italian Wedding Soup
Vets
Calm cats
a warm home
a job to go to....
I put the blender in the dishwasher. Clean up and mess was one reason I left juicing behind!
Today, I'm thankful the snow has held off long enough for my DH to make it home.
And for...
sweet mint gum
stethoscopes
tripods
dentistry for cats
Today I am grateful for a robust constitution (I've been fighting off a cold and so far, am winning!) and for homemade beef vegetable soup.
Tam
Thankful today for...
Sliced pickled jalapeno peppers, celery, and cilantro
Mail order garden plant catalogs that arrive in mid-Winter
Dwarf peach trees
This morning I am thankful...
...to have found a lost stash of homemade oatmeal spice cookies in my desk. Breakfast!
...to have a 75+ degree day in mid-January.
...to have an office casual enough to welcome dogs and kids (if they belong to the owner :-). Boss' two-year-old grandson has his own office and comes every Friday.
Spicey lentil soup (or any hot soup) on a cold day
Salad greens in the middle of the winter
Gloves
Cars with heated seats.
Oh, wow, Sally, that is uncanny. Ain't they neato-keen gifts?
That pic is a little younger , but he will be two April 2 and has blue eyes . Other than that , he looks just like Sam . The picture even fooled my D H .
That's a mighty fine office that young man has there Debra! :-)
Today I'm thankful for a beautiful snowy Jan day. Its only about 4" so its enough to make everything fresh & white but not too much to sock us in.
Tam
Yep, has all those toys you can see piled up along that wall; an armchair and glider (both brought from my house); two lateral file cabinets to hold his clothes, pullups, and such; a television; a DVD/VCR player; a playpen (although we really need to replace that with a toddler bed); a stuffed bear bigger than I am; a popup crawl house; a floor lamp; the child's table and chair; and a small bean bag otter/bear/somekindofcreature. It pays to be the first grandchild when Drampa owns the company. LOL

This early afternoon, I am thankful that...
I can walk out front and cut fresh parsley --IN JANUARY!!
Temps are in the 60s again and I could go do some winter trimming of shrubs and roses and such. Except we still have FEBRUARY to go and traditionally get a nasty ice storm about mid-month. So I am waiting. But I am happy that I COULD if I wanted to! LOL
The cognitive and other effects from the TIA are slowly receding and that I can legitimately still take full advantage at work of what there is remaining. The boss is a loud, volatile, temperamental, extraordinarily difficult-to-work-for person, but he IS genuinely concerned about me and is toning it down around me right now because I might have another (which I have been warned could happen)--and HE doesn't want to be the one to bring it on! ROFL It pays to have put in eight loyal, sometimes back-breaking, occasionally heartbreaking years in his employ.

On days like this , am thankful for Tylenol and a D H that turns the volume down.
Today I am so grateful to have caught a glimpse of my DH "walking the cats" this morning. He had dug a 3' wide walkway through the snow from the house out about half-way to the edge of the property. I could see his foot prints to the edge of the property and saw as he had just started back to the house. He shuffled his feet to make a little walkway for the two kitties - going maybe 10-20' and then the two cats would pop up and bound on ahead of him until they ran out of cleared snow. They'd sit down and he would shuffle a path for another 10-20' and they would repeat the run. When they got to the "real" shovelled part of the path to the house, they just flipped their tails high and ran the whole way back to the house. It was just a happy sight it just made my day.
