Today, I am thankful for...#10

(Zone 7a)

Today, believe it or not, I'm thankful it snowed a little bit. It's cold and dreary but it cleaned out the air. Yea!

Dahlonega, GA

I am thankful this dadgummed dog is supposed to be gone this weekend (and that he has gained weight while here; his ribs and hipbones aren't poking out anymore :-).

I am thankful the people are work are genuinely happy to help me this week.

I am thankful for the support of my sister.

Dahlonega, GA

Wish I could have helped, Debra . He sounds like my kind of dog . Glad you found him a home .

Shawnee Mission, KS(Zone 6a)

Glad you found him a dog also.

Grateful for replacement weather stripping for windows and finding a local place that carries it, for decorated gingerbread men cookies, and for books.

Today I am thankful for our temperature roller coaster winters. It was in the mid-70’s yesterday and I was able to work outside in comfort. I encountered a bull snake enjoying the warmth, but he just stuck his tongue out at me and crawled off. ~N~

Today I am grateful for having the means to finally upgrade our old 32" tube TV to a new Plasma HDTV (and with a great price with Black Friday sales).

And for friends happy to host my DH for Christmas while I am off visiting my family. Not so thankful that one of us needs to stay home to take care of all our critters but its our choice and mostly brings joy to our life.

Thankful Debra will listen to the doctors - right? And that she had a hospital that could see her soon enough and get all those tests done. You let us know the results, OK?

YES, squirt bottles for people. I can just see me filling up a half dozen, at the ready...

I am thankful our rain only lasted one day and was not driven and raining hard. TV can make such a big deal about .5 inch! Do need some weather stripping around the front door - then to figure how to do it. DH is not big on handyman stuff. Nice cool days ahead, and more light rain and wind, but a lot less wind than over a week ago where some areas had gusts over 100mph. Some folks without electricity for more than a week (deja vu, Tammy?). Prepare now people! Oops, I need to draw water, myself. A years worth of food and the well possibly not having electricity is no good.

Here is something I read that I thought was food for thought. Not new, but worth repeating:

It’s easy to think the grass is always greener in your neighbor’s yard. And perhaps it is. At least the part you can see.

But remember…
When you’re weary of fixing another meal and doing dishes yet again, somebody wishes they had food to put on the table.
When you’ve folded and put away a(nother) mountain of laundry, somebody wishes their children had proper coats and hats to wear to school.
When you’re groaning over the highest heating bill yet this year, somebody wishes they weren’t so cold.
When you’re losing sleep and gagging over a child’s stomach bug episode, somebody is praying for a miracle over her child’s hospital bed.
When the exhaustion and nausea of the first trimester are about to do you in, somebody is weeping (yet again) over a negative pregnancy test.
When your headache intensifies over your teen’s college financial paperwork, somebody is visiting the site of her teen’s fatal wreck.
When you wake up to another cloudy, rainy day, somebody is praying for moisture to end a season of drought.
When you pick up your husband’s dirty socks and take out the trash because he forgot, somebody is wishing that for just a moment she didn’t have to do it all alone, all the time.
The next time your situation threatens to steal your joy, try to remember… somebody wants what you have.
Give thanks in all circumstances…

A wonderful reminder Quilty,"There but for the grace of God,Go I."
We've had some good rain today, also peasoup fog.A common occurance on top of our mountain in winter.Perfect weather for a Stephen King book. LOL
I am more than ready for a trip to town.Don't really need anything,Just want to go.
I've finally found someting that apprciates my singing. My cats!!! They jump on my lap and look in my face like I've done something wonderful. My singing is gosh awful.
Am thankful for my cats and that I CAN stay home.

Shawnee Mission, KS(Zone 6a)

Nice reminder about all the things that we miss being grateful for.

I'm also weather stripping the house. The window weather stripping is getting brittle. I found a couple of places in town that sell the replacement stripping that my windows have. Otherwise it would be a mess.

Grateful for old fashion repair stores that sell everything related to windows or doors, a warmer house, and being "handy".

That my son is coming in tonight, haven't seen him for a few weeks. And that he'll eat before he gets here . All he'll want is a snack (pie , cake , sandwich , etc .

Midland City, AL

Thanks, Quilty. The chronic back pain can drag me down. I need a reminder of how fortunate I really am every once in a while.
Today I'm grateful for the wonderful silliness of my friends and family. Put the "Sasquatch for President" bumper sticker on my truck. Listened to my wife making up new words to classic Christmas carols so that their imagery better reflects what Christmas is really in the deep south and Nadine's Christmas cartoons for the kids.

Today I'm thankful for 1/2 off Christmas sales that come BEFORE Christmas. ~N~

Tonight I'm grateful to have known a wonderful woman from my rock garden society chapter. She just passed away after a three year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Q G , I saw the first bulleton of J F K shooting and the second airplane hit the second tower , but can you believe , I missed the snow ?We left just before it hit and made a trip to Abilene,Tex to get a boat I had been trying to buy off my brother for 40 years. He gave it to me and said "Come and get it , you've waited long enough , it's yours " I spent the most miserable , bone numbing cold there, getting tires and greasing bearings . We got back to Austin ,Tx for Christmas day with my son and took off for the coast that afternoon . No snow, I repeat , No snow when we finally got back . Not a trace , anywhere ! It was so cold in Abilene , we bought an oil heater to keep the dogs warm in the van.
Thank you so much for the link , at least I got to see pictures of it .I don't know where the global warming is , but it hasn't been here the last 3 or 4 winters. We've already had two light freezes . Hugs , P S , The boat is a 12' Skimster and can find no information on it . Perfect , orignal condition , no one has ever heard of it and has the metal name plate on it .

No snow is good. :-)

MRIs all clear, looks like a TIA episode. Take drugs, aspirin, and B-12; watch diet; and keep close eye on blood pressure.

Thankful that, although I am still spitting out word salad, there is no permanent damage. :-)

Thankful I did NOT hurt or scream or stomp and yell at this dagnabitt dog when I got home and found he had destroyed a large couch cushion and one of my favorite (and difficult to locate) books.

Thankful that my car is back from the shop and I am about ready to drive this upcoming fine weather weekend. Yea!

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Am thankful for you Debra. With the good report.
Am sorry and empathise about your stuff. I always find it's theraputic to scream and hollar. The fur babies always come back to me in a few minutes. They are all sure I'm one crazy human being anyway. And I don't have close neighbors. LOL
I took Cricket down to my DD,s in A cloth Walmart bag. I have created a monster. She thought it was wonderful to be carried thus.
I'm thankful for a grandson who likes to Bar-B-Que. He did up some burgers tonight (In the cold) I made a greenpea salad.

Midland City, AL

Now I want b-b-q....and cherry pie. :-) That's good news on the health front,, Debra. For the sake of your blood pressure, I hope your problem child goes to his new home soon.
Today I am thankful my wife is determined to see I have a thorough knowledge of science fiction classics. I’ve been getting an education on Arthur C. Clarke lately. I’ve seen the movie 2001-A Space Odyssey, but had never read the novel nor anything else Clarke had written. I thought the science on these novels would be so outdated it would spoil the story. “Childhood’s End” was a great read. I’m now working on the novel, 2001. This isn’t going to be a painful learning process at all. (Jim)

somewhere, PA

Jim - great author! Rendevous with Rama is another of his that's terrific. Have you gotten to Asimov or Frank Herbert? (I grew up reading Science Fiction! Still read it but have tried to expand my interests)

Tam

Midland City, AL

I think I read one of the Foundation trilogy books years ago, but I’m going to need an Asimov refresher course. Dune is another one where I’ve watched the movies, but haven’t read the books. 2001 isn’t nearly so ambiguous in novel form. I like that.
Today, I’m thankful for glues that work that DON”T come out of hot glue guns. (That is one kind of gun I wouldn’t mind seeing banned. Ouch.) Jim

Shawnee Mission, KS(Zone 6a)

It took several tries for me to actually read the Dune Sage. Then it was a post college exams read, one time only, and a two day and one night read. After all this time I still have no interest in reading it again.

Okay with Clark. Really like Asimov and Robert Heilein. Also like Ann McCafferty and Andre Norton. If you like space stories the a good place to start is Asimov, Norton, and Robert Heilein.

Grateful for whoever dropped off two identical four bulb bathroom light fixtures at the Habitate Restore shop. I picked both up cheap. One is up already and the other is outside with it's new coat of paint drying.

Grateful for weather in the middle of December (windows are open) that is warm enough to paint outside in. Also grateful for all those Scfi writers whose books I have read growing up.

(Zone 7a)

Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle are also in the mix for me. Lucifer's Hammer, The Mote in God's Eye and Footfall are among my favorites.

Today, I'm thankful for bleach and Irish music.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

I never read much Science Fiction. I loved Asimofs science books. He managed to make them fun reads.
Has anyone read any Gene Stratton Porter books. I think these are his. Girl of The Limberlost and Freckles. (very old books )LOL
I am thankful for magazines. Have'nt been able to get into anything as long as a book but magazines in little doses does very well.

Rain

Rain that only came down hard after the warehouse guys finished picking up the 27 pallets that a client had sitting outside.

Rain that wasn't too cold while scurrying from the Radiology department to my car with films and reports tucked under a jacket.
(MRI and CT scans on CD now! Why that was a surprise to me, I dunno. But it is very cool and much less cumbersome than flipping those sheets of plastic around! :-)

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Was oh so thankful to get home today. Town is a mess. Cars and people everywhere. LOL Also thankful for candles that smell like apple cinnamen.(SP)

Today I am grateful for my big fluffy cat Truffles. She sat in my lap today and murmured her appreciation for all my attention. It made me feel so important. :-)

"Truffles," I like that name for a cat.
Today I’m thankful for a wife who is a true master of verbal butt kickin’. I had let my workroom fall into total chaos, but after two days of cleaning, re-organizing and throwing away, I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I did promise if she gave up her screened in dining area and let me wall-in the back porch for my workshop, I would keep it very neat for our backdoor guest. It became one of those spaces that seem to collect stuff and I haven’t kept that promise very well. She used that promise as a fulcrum to get me moving.
Motivating your dearly beloved with some verbal kicks in the derrier CAN be taken into the realm of an art form. I’ve got to admire the artistry even when my own backside is the target. So many ladies go banshee when they get fed up with something. While that might explain the rare occurrence of internal human combustion in women and I’m sure there is some satisfaction in seeing a larger male partner duck and cover, it doesn’t do much for correcting the offending behavior long term.
I do think verbal butt kickin’ is the proper term for this in its advanced form, not verbal manipulation” because even though she rarely raises her voice, the words are all banded with razor-edged steel. You just know if you don’t do right something terrible is going to happen to you…you are a little vague as to what it will be…but you know it will be really, REALLY bad. :-)
I echo the thankfulness for rain...slow, gentle rain. (Jim)
