Today, I am thankful for quilts and the people with the patience and skill to make them. I saw some beautiful ones today at the local heritage festival.
The late 1800's and early 1900's was a great place to spend a day, but after seeing all the work that had to be done just to survive, I feel blessed to live in 2011. ~N~
Today, I am thankful for...#9
Ayup, Nadine.
Today, I am thankful that the winds and hail in the early morning hours only broke one front storm window and, I think, one of the roof stacks. (Won't mention the hail dimples all over the brand new car that only has 275 miles on it. At least the windows are intact :-)
I am thankful to have really wild sight of a few tiny leaves blown so hard into siding they interpenetrated the paint, and without the really wild sight of damaged buildings and blown down trees. Most just lost a lot of leaves and twiggy branchlets.
I am thankful that the 50' x 80' section of roof that was ripped off at my workplace was over a warehouse corner and not the offices or store. And that I can claim seniority to leave the vacuuming and sweeping out of three inches of inside water to the younguns. Had my stint of working building damage three times in the last three years. It's their turn. :-)
Today, I am thankful my DH got me the $$$ to re-up my subscription to Dave's! Woohoo! I really missed coming here and seeing what you peeps are thankful for and what y'all are up to.
Hey, kwan! Me too glad too. :D
Me too Quan.
Nadene. that quilt was a beautiful wonder. The work that went into that was mindboggleing.(SP)
I am thankful that my GS playing around, put my nearsighed SIL,s glasses on and discovered there is a world out there. He has been nearsighted and no one had a clue.
vickie
Vickie , is that child old enough to be in school ? My sister was in the second grade before the teacher told Mama she needed her eyes checked . She didn't squint at home , but did in school , trying to focus on her work and the blackboard . I'm thankful too , it was found .
Thankful I got our mobile home rented to some great people . They've been in two nights .
My Westie was used to going down there and keeping me company while I worked on it . Yesterday they brought their chihuahua and English mastiff to the house , to show them their new home . My Westie went running down there , up the steps and the mastiff woofed at him at the closed gate to the porch . Poor Rusty turned and shot down the stairs , peeing all the way down the drive . He stopped about a hundred foot away when he decided he wasn't being chased . He turned around and just whined, like the humans were on their own , he couldn't save us . Funny . The mastiff is about 130 lbs and as big as a Shetland pony .
Loves, Glad it wasn't worse for you .
Today, I am thankful for,
Universal remote controls. How can one be a TRUE sofa spud if one has to get up to change channels, or turn down the volume? :-)
Iced Spiced Decaffeinated Chai Tea Latte (whew, that's a bunch of typing!)
Antiques Roadshow (while drinking Iced Spiced, etc.)
October Roses
Today I'm thankful for six hour of deep sleep this afternoon. Recovering from lst night with no electricity and lots of dogs barking.
Thankful for Tony and how easy he makes it easy to be a boss. Most thankful for how grateful we are for each other.
Thankful that when I'm having a difficult day I can say so and Tony is understanding and doesn't take it personally. Just does what he can to help me.
Grateful for five dogs who love me unconditionally and can make me laugh - when I'm not wanting to throttle them for barking.
Thankful Tony fixed some gates so I can put the dogs in the back yard tonight and see if that cuts down on the barking.
Thankful our electricity is back after being of for almost twenty-four hours beginning yesterday afternon. Super thankful this didn't happen in August.
hugs, katie
"How can one be a TRUE sofa spud if one has to get up to..." find any other remote!
Today, I'm thankful I found the old sheets to put over my plants. We're supposed to have a hard freeze tomorrow night and I'm not ready to give up my tomatoes, broccoli and onions.
Kwan understand that not wanting to give them up. BTW - We use a row cover (or sheet) plus plastic over the veggies to keep them going. The plastic is proably a foot over top of the sheet. The double cover raises the internal temperature of the bed higher than just one cover. We can grow most greens until thanksgiving and spinach until spring that way. See Elliot Coleman's book The Winter Harvest Handbook if you are interested in that kind of thing.
I'm grateful for being able to read whatever one else is thankful for. It gives me more things to think about being grateful for.
I'm grateful for a hot dinner last night, left overs for lunch, and all the herbs & produce we are still harvesting out of the garden.
Thanks, Susan. I have a tiny veggie plot, so, what I have is precious.
I am thankful to live close enough to Lancaster, Pa to enjoy a smorgasbord dinner there on occasion. Tonight, I am meeting my dad there. We will have dinner and he will take home a box of frozen home cooked and healthy meals.
Tam
That's cool, Tam. I'm originally from Red Lion, PA. A little outside of York. I know the Lancaster area well.
Most of my family still lives in that part of the country.
Bummer, Debra. This has really been a wicked weather year for you.
We are grateful you will still be hangin' with us, Kwan.
When I was young, once every school year someone came to the school and did very basic hearing and visual exams on anyone the teachers were concerned about. I wonder if that is still done. It was a good idea. It caught problems early.
Most years, with only a little TLC, we can keep cool-weather veggies going. I'm amazed at the people pulling that off in zone 5 though. I'll have to check out that book.
Today, I'm thankful for whoever came up with slow-cookers. Even I can make a good meal without any hassle. (Jim)
Slow cooker , Amen
If you go find a row cover use the ones that are 85% and not the winter weight ones.
I guess not all schools check their students health. My GS IS 30 years old. I have'nt seen those glasses on his head since the first night. When I got my first glasses they never came off till I went to bed.
He is aggrivated at me cause I wont loan him my car. I cannot afford to buy another good car and he is an unreliable driver.LOL He's at the age reliability aught to kick in anytime.
I am forever thankful for slow cookers. Also thankful for Hobby Lobby. Was depressed and spent last evening looking all around Hobby Lobby. They have a Nativity set to die for but Walmarts has one I've already decided to get.
Corned beef and cabbage, roast beef and onions, Rotel queso
============================================
Today I am thankful for,
Unscented shampoo
Popsicle sticks
Inexpensive dog biscuits--that are good for them. :-)
Debra, Where do you get the inexpensive dog bisquits! P-L-E-A-S-E-
TIA
Vickie
I'm thankful I made it through my first night at a new gym. Didn't do much but what I did made me feel like I'm finally moving in the right direction.
And also for such another incredible day.
Jan
When ny boy said he wanted a motorcycle , I told him sure , you can have one . Just as soon as you can buy it .
Vickie, tell him there are five things you don't loan to anyone , kids , husband, car ,pets, money . In that order. lol
Oh yum Debra - corned beef and cabbage 1 of our favourite boiled dinners.
Very, very thankful today that when I took my DH to the Cancer Clinic this morning for 9:45 am the Tech took 1 look at him and said "there is no way you can hang out for your radiation that's scheduled for 6 pm". We live about a 50 - 60 min drive away from the CC so coming home wasn't really an option as travelling in the Escape is hard on him. So he got his tats done, we got to come home early and now he's asleep in his bed looking quite comfy. Rescheduled apptment for Nov 1 at 4 pm for the radiation. I just wanted to give that Tech a great big hug but somehow I don't think he would have liked it. Just patted him on the arm to show my thanks!
Tam you are so lucky to have your DF with you and that the 2 of you enjoy each others company so much. How I miss my daddy was here to garden with me or at least give me some direction.
You all here on this thread continue to make me smile each day and realize just how lucky I really am. Thank you so much!
Dianne
Vickie, I get them from Kroger on sale and with my card. I used to buy the $4 box of Blue Dog brand all natural peanut butter and molasses biscuits from Kroger because Russell could tolerate them. Now, I can get the natural Milk Bones. Have Rosemary and such in them.
Dianne - you are so right about my dad. I am filled with gratitude knowing I've had him for 52yrs already. I have wonderful memories of his help in the gardens here at my current property. I just want to keep him for another 10+yrs. But I'll take whatever I can with him.
Good advice Digger!
Tam
I am so fortunate for decent health for D H and me . My biggest problem is my weight and shortness of breath . Too many years of smokeing .
Dianne, I pray that the radiation isn't hard on him . Nobody should have to tolerate those treatments . Extra prayer for you and him .
Thanks for the tip on dog biscuits , didn't know there were some that dogs would actually eat .
I keep a picture of my dad on the counter behind the kitchen sink . He's been gone over 30 years , but I see him every day and still talk to him when I feel down .
I am thankful for a granddaughter I can teach about gardening. I never had anyone to show me the joys, peace and sharing that can come from it. My daughter is begininng to show some interest in it, too, and now has her own place where she can start.
Someone had a thread about doing a fairy garden with her granddaughter. It was a lot of fun. Can't remember where it was, maybe garden art forum. GD's nickname was Goober.
kb
She is in Alabama and someone said she changed her user name. I'm ashamed to say , I'm having a senior moment .
I think I saw that thread. Quite funny and might be fun to try. It would have to be a long distance, though. They live about 4 hours away. I could easily set up her own garden for her here.
Today, I am thankful:
That I can complain about how long it will be before I can cut my hair to donate--because it means I have hair that grows. :-)
That I can complain about how hot it is here--because it means I no longer live in heavy snow country.
That I can complain about how annoying it is when, at time that I am trying to focus on tax numbers and spreadsheets, my boss plops down in my office for no other reason than to say than his email fonts are different sizes --because it means I have a job AND have the freedom to complain about it. :D
Priceless !
Ok , katie b , I got my thoughts back . That's Mud -Elf . A real sweetie . I had fairies on the brain and not elves . I missed meeting her and the youngun this past June . She was coming to the roundup but couldn't make it .
Oh, yes, the freedom to grumble. Gotta be thankful for that! :-)
Today, I am thankful to have one GS who is very interested in gardening He insist that the Children's Garden should be named after him since he waters and pulls weeds when he is here.
I'm also thankful for chocolate, in general, and, in particular, the Chocolate Decadence Cake recipe Nadi (Sansai87) got from this thread. She made it tonight. I want a perfume that smells like that cake batter. :-) k*
Also grateful about slow cookers.
We’ve been pleased with the results on the winter gardening so far. It would work best if we had a walk-in covered cold house used with row covers. But what we have works fine for now.
Digger – Your rule make sense to me also.
Cando – Maybe he’s not driving well because he’s not wearing those glasses.
Tam – It’s always been nice to hear you talk about how much you love and think of your dad. Nice memories also.
Dianne – Glad to hear that the tech was astute enough to see how tired DH was.
Just cake batter or chocolate cake batter.
Grateful for colorful fall leaves on trees and blowing/piled around on the ground. Grateful for people who are kind to each other. Grateful for DH who is currently collecting and taking out the garbage.
I’m sure it’s the double dose of chocolate in the batter.
The Chocolate Decadence cake is well named. It seems designed for hard-core chocolate addicts. My DW and god-daughter should both be in Chocoholics Anonymous. If there isn’t already a chocolate based perfume those two will probably create one.
I guess I should be thankful that DW loves plants and chocolate, not jewels and furs. (Jim)
Is that the recipe from Eating Well magazine? I just made it again. Its wonderful!!!
Today I am grateful to have found my love for cooking. It's enabled me to eat healthy and delicious foods and have a common interest with many interesting people.
Tam
When I was a kid, I loved the smell of vanilla so much I would dab the extract behind my ears just like perfume. There is chocolate extract, too, Jim... :-D
Thankful for my report from the dr, no sinuses polyps were seen,,,,,, the last 3.5 years have been a nightmare, but now I feel like I might be coming around that mountain of illness.
Praying for those with illness to receive healing.
Jan
Glad you are feeling better, Jan.
I think someone already designed a chocolate perfume. We'll have to pick up some chocolate extract. :-)
Yes, it was the recipe from Eating Well magazine. It is hard to believe something that taste that rich isn’t bad for you. Papa Jim thought it was too much, at first. He isn’t the chocolate fiend MK and I are. But, when I put a big dallop of Dream Whip on his to cut the chocolate a little, he declared the recipe a keeper and put it in the permanent files himself. . The texture reminds me of pumpkin pie. Certainly glad I followed the recipe exactly and used the parchment paper.
Today I finished my book and display shelves and got my considerable book collection organized. I am thankful for that. ~N~
Jan - do you have a salicylate sensitivity? My mom finally got diagnosed when she had nasal polyps. Boy, its made all the difference in the world for her health since she got that diagnosis a couple years ago. She's scrupulous with her diet and feels so much better now.
Tam
