Coffee Break #65

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

This new threat only adds to the anger.

Thomaston, CT

Oh, loved those photos of the flags & chairs....some sad photos in today's paper....Greenwich lost 26 folks that day, & the photos were of children left behind.....they were just babies then, but they still showed the horrible loss they feel today.....

Our local Christian radio station sets up an empty shoe memorial...they had to move it this year because their station was flooded during Irene so it's now down in Ocean Grove

We can get so creative when there is time to think, especially of others.

I saw the end of the flyover on TV. The flag placards reminded me of college days when I sat in the UW card section 'Badger block'. Not as stunning as the one at Lambeau field. Then to top it off, the Packers won the game.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Glad they won. How hadly did they cream NO? I didn't watch the whole game.

South Hamilton, MA

They won by 8 pts. & dicey near the end as they scored & tried an onside kick which the Packers recovered.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

wow, earlier in the game the packers were way ahead!

Thomaston, CT

Impressive memorial, Jen.....and to the living as well.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The Jersey 9/11 memorial at Liberty park is very nice.

6.7 quake off Vancouver Island. The 'Cascadia Fault' out there is a much bigger threat than the San Andreas.

Yep, and if Mt. Rainier blows, BIG PROBLEMS.

Well it's been a really long stressful week for me....one of my Grandaughters has been complaining of belly aches alot and her Mom found blood in her stools. They have no idea whats wrong at this point. It may be as simple as an allergic reaction, or something more serious. She's see's a specialist next tues. PLease pray or just send good wishes her way please.

Our neighbor 's brother committed suicide last Sat. and how he did it has the family extremely shook up. I can not understand how people do this to begin with, but this was just so violent. They think he got the idea for another suicide in Va. last week.

One of the 9/11 memorials in Maine:

A half-acre section of the Heart of America Quilt is displayed outside Freeport High School on Saturday. The quilt, which was started in Maine and includes signatures and messages from all 50 states and 14 countries, honors victims of the 9/11 attacks and serves as a symbol of national unity.

I heard the motorcycle run going by yesterday.. wish the town alerts would tell us when that is.. the highway is closed when they pass by.. and I would like to go down to watch

Thomaston, CT

Very nice....I've been to Freeport a hundred times....don't remember where the HS is.....the park, by the town hall, was put in by my son.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Incredibly tough day. Had already been very difficult. Almost lost it at church when they played God Bless America at the end of the mass.

Then, driving home with my wife, I mentioned to her that I always felt that I knew someone personally who died on 9/11 and just had not found out. A fallen firefighter was the son of close friends of my parents, but I never met him.

Literally minutes later, I got on the computer as I started eating lunch. I went on Twitter and the local Hudson Valley newspaper had been tweeting the names of people from the area who died that day. As soon as I clicked to update the page, this name just JUMPED off the screen at me. Stephen P. Driscoll. My heart sank. I quickly googled his name and my fears were realized. He was my close friend from HS. I recognized the photo immediately, even though it was taken 20 years after we graduated. His eyes had not changed.

He was one of the first friends I made at school and remained one of my best for the four years. I am now kicking myself for not staying in touch afterward. Turns out he was one of the elite emergency services unit cops and died in the south tower saving others. He had been in the navy (Seabees) and was a volunteer fireman. He had been a cop for 10 years.

He was in the Bronx when we were in school. We always joked about each other's borough. He was a tall, very skinny kid, who was not particularly athletic. From some of the things I read online, apparently he got himself in great shape and inspired others to do so too. They also said exactly what I remembered most about him - he was always happy, smiling and laughing. He left a wife and son, who now too is a cop in the Bronx.

Please remember him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. A great guy and true hero, his birthday was July 4th. RIP Steve.

Here he is.

He def lived a full life, sorry for your loss

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

so sorry Victor

Thomaston, CT

Oh, Victor....what a moving story....our final hymn today was The Battle Hymn of the Republic, & I cried the whole time....but for you to find your friend's name and accomplishments was amazing.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, ladies. I am still in a bit of shock. Not only so saddened to find that a good friend has passed, but to be absolutely SURE that there was someone all these years and then find out on this day in the manner I did is beyond amazing. Sometimes things really do seem to happen for a reason.

As I said, I will be visiting the memorial next week so now I have at least two names to look up.

South Hamilton, MA

Best to you Victor & honors for your friend.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Glad you were able to confirm what you had 'felt' all these years. Sorry for your loss.

Church was difficult, but had a good message from the book of Habbakuk. My son's prayer was heart-wrenching.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thank you, Jan and Lucy.

Weird how something can simultaneously feel like it happened yesterday and like it happened 50 years ago.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor, so sorry to hear, so difficult

South China, ME(Zone 5a)
