Gold & Silver Plant Swaps Trades Haves Wants (Sept.10)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm sure there's one in my files somewhere, but not where I can put my finger on it... you'll see it in a couple of weeks! ;-)

I did find this photo in an old thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7224198

I'll clip a few of the bigger "spiders" off and start them rooting in water before the swap.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Also, I have what I believe is chocolate drop coleus that's growing beautifully, but I don't know how to propagate it.

If someone is interested and can help me get a proper cutting, I'll be happy to bring some.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

ss--

Coleus is easy! Just take a tip cutting, remove the bottom leaves, and put it in some fresh potting mix.
It will root and grow really quickly.
I don't mess with water rooting first. To me that is an unnecessary step as the roots would be disturbed
when they transition from water to soil.
Soil-rooting works better--as the roots grow right into the soil.

I rooted all my Coleus last winter and had a bumper crop to share.

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think the main reason I root coleus in water first is just that I like having a little vase filled with their colorful leaves on the counter! Gita, you really did well with those... I remember how they grew like crazy and you kept pinching them back so they'd fit on your shelf. :-)

That reminds me... I'll take some cuttings of Sun Coleus (varieties that actually like full or part sun) to share... they'll either be in 6-packs or in water with little tangles of roots LOL, but either way they'll do fine. I'll try to dig up the variety names (got them from BadSeed at the beginning of summer).

SSgardener, if you look at the stem of the coleus, you'll see little pairs of leaves at the base of the older leaves. When you cut the stem just above that spot to take a cutting, each of those pairs will sprout out into a new branch... so the more you cut/pinch, the bushier your plant will get.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Just a reminder to all here that there is a Coleus Forum here at Dave's

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/coleus/all/

If somehow I am able to make this swap (attempt #3) or hook up with Sallyg I will send a pot or two of trailing coleus that should do quite well as a "house plant" this winter and be a source of colorful "spillers" for your outdoor containers next year.Let me know if you'd like to request one (10 inch pot)

Will list other "haves" later.

Judy

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Trailing coleus are great! I think one of my green & chocolate colored sun coleus seems to be growing with a trailing habit.

Crozet, VA

Okay, first things first. Jill, delete my request for baby Hawaiin Spider. I can do the same with mine and get new starts, I just love seeing them still on the plant though. So thanks, but no thanks.

As for the Day Lilies Critter, consider it done for each color. He is asking if you would like to see pictures first?

If anyone out there (please) has any Purple Passion, I need some rootings. Mine which were only recently flourishing have decided to act ugly on me. Thank you.

Now.....Coleup, I would love to have some of the trailing Coleus. SSgardener, I too would love to have some of the Chocolate Drop Coleus....love the name. I am with Jill on rooting in water. I like having little cups of it sitting around too.

Gita, your tray of Coleus is beautiful. I am the proud owner of some of the frilly ones you had left over at the swap at Aspenhills and they have really gone to town. They probably measure about about 18 inches tall now. I need to try propogating some of it soon.

Oh yeah, one more request. Does anyone have seeds pods from a Money Plant?

That is it for now.

Ruby

Crozet, VA

SSgardener, I just re-read a couple of my posts. I have you listed as getting from me:

Sedum Autumn Joy
Sedum Sarmentosum
A Hosta or two
and Hens and Chicks

Sorry.....will repost a list of what I will be bringing each person closer to the swap, so any corrections can be made then.

So Bec.....do you want us to bring you some of each of the things I have offered, or would you like to look at my list and request what you would like to have? I'd be happy to bring you some of each thing listed.

How about Chantell, is she going to get to play this time?

Ruby

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think I still have 'Purple Passion' in my DL island bed, but I need to ID it next year (can't imagine who moved tags around on me LOL)... most of my DLs are looking pretty rough after a couple of dry summers, but I gave them a nice helping of compost recently, and I think those that have made it thus far will bounce back and look way better when they come up next spring. I know that doesn't help you now, Ruby, but it might be a backup plan!

I think I can take 4, maybe 5, of the largest Hawaiian spider babies from my plant. Each seems to have 2 or 3 "crowns" within it, so should make a nice start.

Ruby, you know we always love pictures, but I'd be happy with whatever John decides to divide this year. Joyanna can't decide if she likes pink or purple DLs better... like me, she ooooohh's over whatever is blooming that day! The yellow one he gave me ('Prairie Moonlight' I think?) is doing fine. Thank you!

I know we're being pretty chatty on this thread, because that's what makes it fun... if anybody is getting a little lost in the posts, not to worry, we can start a new thread closer to the swap date and get everybody's lists posted clearly.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

LOL on who's moving your plant tags- Good Luck with that 'battle" HA hahahaha so cute.

I was thinking ruby meant that purple trailing wandering jew type plant.

RUBY- I have money plant- aka Lunaria or silver dollar plant ? Right, that one? I will go gather up some pods/ seeds before they all get washed away in the storm.

Jill, I like the idea- reposting to clarify, if we get around to it.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ruby---
I just want to clarify whether you really mean "Purple Passion" plant--or it's kind of look-alike--
"Moses in a Cradle" (same color) that DOES grow in gardens.
You can dig up the roots of the "Moses" and keep them dry over winter.
Next summer--just plant the dead-looking mass of nothings and watch it come back!

The Purple Passion plant is more a houseplant type of a plant. Don't see it very often....
I don't think the PP would like to be planted in the ground as it likes to stay on the dry side.
All thiss rain we have had--it would be long dead....
It does love the sun though. The more sun--the more brilliant purple it gets....

Re my Coleus----
I think many of the ones i have are Sun Coleus. I know I have purchased Sun Coleus and
paid the $3 each for them. And I know that I took cuttings from every variety I had.
There are some that I have NO idea where they came from....Different colors yet!
I think these are the "frilly" ones I am talking about...

Re my "Wandering Jew"--I will have 18-4" pots rooted of these to share.
I can start more--as the ones I have in my combo planters are, forever, going to town.
All I do is save ONE 6" pot of these through the winter. As crappy as they look indoors--all I need
are the growing tips and I am set for another year....The biggest batch are growing at the base of my
Mandevilla Vine. I planted 2 little clumps--and look at it now! These are the ones I already pinched off of to root.

Jill---How does your Hawaiian Spider differ from the all green one?
I did notice some white on your babies on this one. Is that it?

I can also bring a few "Chrysanthemum Pacificum" starts.

I also need to dig up and divide a few batches of D-Lilies. Did many last year. These
never got dug. Different bed. Among these are the "Frans Halls" Lily and some kind of orange one (NOT ditch...)

And--in case no one checked my updates on Haves--I plan to dig up 2 lg. clumps of August Lily Hosta.
Ruby wanted some. My Manager, Donn wants some--and I need to keep a couple for myself.

OK! Thats all---writing too much as it is.....Gita

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ruby--

Is this the "frilly" Coleus you were talking about?
It does grow HUGE!!! Like a small shrub! This is ONE plant!

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK, going to try to clarify once more, Gita. The Hawaiian Spider is variegated, not all green (although the babies tend to be more white and go more to green as they mature). It is larger and more substantial than the regular green or green-white varieties. I don't know anything more about it. If you're interested, I'll put your name on a baby, and if you decide you don't want it once you see my plant I'll give it to somebody else. :-)

That's one advantage of hosting -- should be able to show people the "mother" plant for most things I have to share!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 6b)

Does anybody have any of the following?

Raspberry wine or Grand Parade bee balm
Blue Paradise, David, Eva Cullum, Starfire, or Nicky tall garden phlox
Kim's knee high or Ruby star coneflower
Candona, May's Night, or East Friesland salvia
Daylilies wanted: Chicago Rosy or Chicago Apache, Mary Todd, or Eileen Clymer
Rosy Return, or Pardon me

I'm planning on bringing some Bronze mums that I potted up a few months ago, pink coneflower that reach 30-36 in. I think they might be Magnus variety, black-eye susans, white foxglove and some columbines if they will pot up well. Columbines would be either McKana's hybrids, clementine blue or red..I have them marked in my flowerbed but when they reseed elsewhere, you have no way of identifying them. All are very pretty so whatever you get will be a surprize. I hope to be able to pot up a white scabiosa. I also have some creeping yellow sedum that is great for borders. At my former home, I used to use it in a flower bed with red geraniums and dark purple petunias and it was so pretty. It is in the succulent family and so easy to take cuttings off and it spreads quickly. I may have some others that I'll be digging up. Oh, rose campion. There may be more. Will post next week.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thank you everyone for your help! I'll bring some cuttings of my chocolate drop coleus!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 6b)

You know with all this rain we've got today and supposed to get over the weekend..it probably would be a good time to dig up and pot up stuff.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--

Didn't mean to bug you re the Hawaiian Spider plant.
I was just going by the picture you posted. I could not see any variegation in the plant.

No thanks! Do not put me down for one. I have too many as it is....
Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

the photo I linked to is from at thread at DG on Hawaiian spider plants; it's not my plant in the picture. It's apparently common for the mother plant to become less variegated, sometimes entirely green, but for the babies to be much lighter... I thought the plant in that photo had a lot of white in its baby spiders.

Pippi, I was thinking the same thing as I was pulling weeds this evening... good time to dig stuff! As I'm pulling, I'm coming across some extra things, and I'll try to pot some up if there's interest. I'm pretty sure I've got 'Rosy Returns' and 'Pardon Me', but same problem as with 'Purple Passion' (even if it turned out Ruby didn't want the DL by that name!), I might not be able to figure out which one it is until next spring. I'll look for tags as I'm weeding & mulching. :-)

Anybody want a mimosa seedling? Word of warning, they can be invasive... if it wasn't Jim's favorite tree, I wouldn't put up with all the scattered seeds/seedlings... but it sure was stunning in bloom this June!

I know I owe Greenthumb a pot of Lamium 'Orchid Frost', and I can probably get a couple extra starts of it when I dig some for him. Looks like there also might be a couple extra Achillea (yarrow) out there, a really vigorous white heirloom variety (name unknown but came from an old homestead).

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 6b)

Jill,
If you have those two DL that you mentioned to spare..I'd love them.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Ruby - I'd like a Lily of the Valley if possible :-)

I'm not too worried about going home with anything, I can't wait to see y'all - is all :-)

PS. Chantell can not make it this time, she tried and tried to rearrange stuff and it just didn't work! So it'll only be one half of the Tweedle twins :-)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

}:^(
Real life stinks- it messes up fun sometimes!

Of course if there'd be anything we can send back for her, besides extra hugs on you, we will.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Love y'all!! I will do some inventory and post what I have avail - if Bec's willing to do the transport.
If I can find any manageable size - I should be able to send Passiflora vine and quite a few Peanut Butter Shrub cuttings (may have some young ones growing along side mama. Not gloating mind you but my back yard smells AMAZING between the PB Shrub (which dare I say I was going to dig up and the Passis covering my fence

So...for now:
Passis - May Pop or Incense - have both and never know till they bloom which is which
PB Shrub Cuttings http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/772/
Agave and Yucca pups (yes again)
Limited 'Shooting Star' Gardenia cuttings http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/126036/ Yes this has been hardy for me
Limited Night Blooming Jasmine Cuttings - this one's tender - gotta bring her inside come beginning of Nov.
Limited 'Maid of Orleans' Jasmine cuttings - tender as well http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/55234/

Ruby - I will have either seeds or a hardy canna for you - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/3302/
David - do you remember what that plant was that we spoke of with the great fragrance?
Sally - I 'might' have those seeds in by swap time

UPDATE: Since Bec going to hang with 'Shorty' I'll have to hold on to my babys till next time...we sure will miss all of you!!! Count down till Sushi in Feb?
Any that asked for particulars - I might be able to mail to you if you don't mind paying the postage...let me know via dmail....

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantelle,

That canna is beautiful! If you have a small root division--I would like to have one too.
Seeds would take a few years--yes?

SO? You do not have to dig this one up? Hmmm....

Gita

Crozet, VA

OKay, I am looking for the houseplant Purple Passion which is a fuzzy leafed plant. Thanks for you offer Jill, but no thanks this time. I just came in from potting some up for John to take to Market and my supply is really ailing.

Pippi, we have Mary Todd DL's which we will bring for you. Becky, I will get together some Lily of the Valley for you. Chantell, I have to try the Peanut Butter shrub even though the link wouldn't open for me to see what I am getting. Also thank you for thinking of me with the canna or the canna seeds. I would also like to request the agave and yucca pups. Thank you folks.

Ruby

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

One of my garden favorites is Yellow Ox-Eye (Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra).. easy to winter sow from seed, but it does look like I have one or two extra little plants to share.

Does anybody want some (dis)Obedient Plant? Mine is a bright pinkish purple. It does spread outward from where it's first planted, but it's shallow rooted, so it's easy enough to yank out from where you don't want it. It's only really "obedient" in the vase, because the flower stems stay where you bend them.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 6b)

Ruby..that would be wonderful i you have the Mary Todd DL..if nobody has laid claim to it, would you put my name on it. (Pippi21)?

I went and bought new potting mix today and potted up the following: white foxglove, yellow creeping sedum, Rudbeckia "Goldstrum" or BES, rose campion, campanula clustered bellflower, Magnus coneflower, Malva Zebrina, and I'll have some other plants I'm sure.

We've only been to one plant swap and everybody potted stuff up with soil. Did I read where some will bring their offerings in a bag, which will take less room. Has anybody bought columbines to a plant swap? I did for one but they wilt quick. I may think twice about those. If anybody wants to come to my house for some, I'll be glad to let them have them. Because they have reseeded "wherever" I can't tell you what their exact colors will be but I can tell you what I have planted.

There may be more but have to watch amount bringing so I don't have to listen to DH bellow if any soil spills in the car or truck, Whatever I decide to bring.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Pippi---

The secret is to think ahead....When you find out there is a Plant Swap coming--dig up and pot up
anything extra you want to share weeks ahead. This will give your seedling plants time to root and perk up.

Doing it just a week ahead--or the morning of--just does not give plant babies time to root and look great.

Not to brag---but any plants I have to offer are always potted in 3" or 4" pots and actively growing. All rooted!
I just feel that more people would like to choose these kinds of offerings vs. just yanked up out of your beds
the day of the Swap and put in small plastic bags. Which would YOU choose????

NOW! Digging up D-Lily roots and my August Clematis roots are in a different category....

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I like to pot things up in advance when I can, especially when it's to fill a request, but I always seem to end up bringing some last-minute things with their roots tied up in bags, too. Some things, like chocolate peppermint and that ground-cover yellow sedum, grow so readily when you stick them anywhere that sharing them bare-root and bagged works just fine. Daylily and hosta divisions are pretty tough, too. They may wilt a little during the day of the swap, but if you take them home and pot or plant them and give them a good drink, they'll perk right up again.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Pippi, I'd love some of your magnus coneflower and white foxglove!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Really, I think it depends on what you're able to do, either in terms of time or physical ability. I'd rather share something that's been yanked up and bagged than not bring it to share at all.

Does anybody need nursery pots? I've still got a fair number (more than I can use, even when I'm feeling really ambitious) of 1 gallon pots and some square quarts... might have a few extra 2 gallon pots, also. Lowe's had sturdy 3 gallon black nursery pots clearanced for maybe $1 today; if anybody needs those, LMK, and I'll try to swing by again this week. They also had 20 inch black pots for $5 (not double-wall plastic, but nice looking and not just a "nursery pot"). I might have picked up an extra one or two of those, also... ;-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, and Pippi, I was trying to find DL tags this morning and not having much luck... I may not be able to ID my plants until they bloom again next year (I should be able to figure out most of them because I know what I put in that bed, just not which is where).

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 6b)

Jill, I understand. Have a few like that myself and I don't have a little one to blame it on.

SS gardener..I'll put your name on the coneflower and white foxglove..

Gita. Thanks for your.great advice. I'll remember that next year. The roots on some of these plants are so long. I was shocked..think that was the Malva zebrina. I love that plant and it reseeds and is so pretty. I'm kind of limited by space as well as rules and regs of our community. I've been looking for an outdoor Baker's Rack to place my potted plant on. Haven't found it yet but I'm going to keep looking. That would keep them contained in one area and can be displayed nicely with other decorative accents. I thought about buying one of these mini greenhouses that are tall but they don't look that sturdy. Maybe I can find a used Baker's Rack on Craig's list or Free Cycle. I could always repaint it if needed with a Rust-oleum type paint for the outdoors. I have plenty of 4 in. nursery pots too. Sure takes a lot less potting mix for that size then what I have them in now.

Tell me how you handle specific plants that somebody requested? How do you label them so that plant is only taken by that person?

Jill, didn't you tell us that Miss Joyanna likes purple and pinks. Tell her that pinks and purples are my favorite colors too. It must be fun having a little one that already enjoys gardening with you. That Malva Zebrina is a pretty flower and it blooms all summer.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL Pippi, I had to nod my head in agreement with Jill. If my life was calmer (read not working a f/t and a p/t job) I'd love to be more organized not to mention think ahead. But between that and complete and utter repeated failures at rooting hardwood and semi-hard wood cuttings....well that's why you hear me offer cuttings. So no worries...you simply do what you have time to do - everyone has always been appreciative of what ever they get. I know I have been. One day I'll learn how to root things and shock everyone. ^_^

Ruby - I was happy to realize I hadn't gotten rid of all of those cannas when I 'thought' I'd dug and dispersed them all a couple of years ago. There's not much there but they'll spread with time, I'm sure. I always think of you when my Lily of the Valley comes up each spring with their sweet scent. I think I told you that the ones I'd ordered never came back - that's when I gave a go with yours...and whhaa laaa....victory!!

Gita - I've never grown them from seed so I really don't know. I've never dug them up except when I thought I'd given them all away LOL. They are in my south facing front yard directly in front of my brick front town house. So I guess now I wonder if it's truly hardy 'here' or not. I will see if there's more then one when I get out there. Sadly I think it's just the one though. As I said I'd thought I'd dug all of those up and gave them away previously. :-(

Speaking of nursery pots...if anyone comes across a couple of 5 gal around any of the swap times, please keep me in mind. My two remaining Plumies would sure appreciate it if I simply ordered a couple for them. I can only imagine how root bound they are....it's been years....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Chantell, do you want one of those 20 inch pots I picked up? I put my plumie directly into the deck bed this year, and this is the first time it hasn't just looked sad all summer... lots of leaves, a little new growth, so who knows maybe it'll bloom next year.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Jill - my brain's gone MIA as usual...what gal size is a 20" equal to? My two plumies have been in their 3 gal sizes forever...I'm such a bad plant mom...they continue to live despite me...LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hmm, they're definitely bigger than a 5 gallon bucket, at least 10 gallons, maybe more like 20. It's confusing because a "5 gallon" nursery pot usually doesn't actually hold 5 gallons (4, maybe).

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Jill - IF it's not a bother (read: you need to go back anyway) I would be thrilled for 2-3 of those 20" ones. Just let me know and if yes, I'll send money with the Becmeister aka Twiddley Dee. My plumies will thank you. If you're not going back and can spare one...ditto...I'll send the $$ w/Bec.
Hugs

Crozet, VA

Putting in a request for any and all nursery pots that any one is wanting to get rid of. John makes a trip to a landscaping business some miles away every couple of weeks to load up with their extras, so any you all have to get rid of, we would appreciate. Any size is good, I think. It hasn't been too many year ago that I was getting rid of mine by offering them on Freecycle. Little did I know that we would be needing them later. Live and learn.

Gita I was delighted yesterday morning when surveying the back forty and finding big red blooms on the Canna you gave me at Terry's swap. They have done beautifully. You and Sally have really blessed me with Cannas over the years. I love the plant so much.

Chantell, really glad that you like the Lily of the Valley. I hope that Becky will like the ones we are bringing for her too. This thread is super exciting to read. Everyone is getting in to the spirit of the thing and that is so cool. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

Ruby

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll put out a stack of "extra" nursery pots on the side patio. I'll put a tub of potting mix out there, too, in case there's any last minute digging or dividing, or if anybody wants to pot up a bare-root plant.

Pippi, it's not exactly the baker's rack you mentioned, but I've been sorting through some things in the basement... I have a metal unit with three open shelves, looks about 12"x12", maybe 40 inches tall? Anyway, you are welcome to it. It would give you a little more space plus give height to whatever plant is on the top. If nobody wants it, it's going to the thrift shop, but it doesn't have to go tomorrow -- I can put it out at the swap for you to see.

Chantell, you may have 2 of the 20 inch pots (I bought all they had, and I've already managed to fill 6 of them in my imagination LOL). They don't have drainage holes, but they'd be easy to drill. Your remaining plumie will have to make do... Actually, it's possible that I have an extra one of the larger pots that you like from WalMart, with the self-watering bottom. I'll check. (It wouldn't be as big, either 16 or 18 inches, but 5 gallons I'm sure.)

Speaking of pots, could anybody use half a dozen terra cotta "orchid" pots (with the slashed open sides)? I think they're 5 inches across at the top. If there's anything else you're looking for, LMK.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hostess with the mostest!!!!!
I'd like one orchid pot PLZ for my clearance orchid from last week. Can't stand not knowing what the roots are doing down in a solid pot with moss glued on top. Thank you Jill!
