Welcome to the Plant Chat thread for the Fall DG Swap at Critter's place!
Please post haves/wants, questions, and other plant-related stuff for the swap here. You can arrange trades on this thread or via Dmail, whatever works best for you. (For me, if it's posted on this thread, I'm less likely to miss it, but others like to stay organized via Dmails.)
In general, it's really helpful to label plants with the name of the plant and your DG name (both because people like to remember where their special plants came from and because it's easier to ask questions about the plant later). You can arrange trades in advance on this thread, or you can just trade on the spot at the plant swap. If you're interested in a plant, please say so, because some folks use this thread as a way to gauge interest in a particular plant and decide how many to dig/bring.

HAVE:
So far--I have many mini-pots of rooted X-mas cactus that are growing really well--outside my front door.
--I also potted up a lot of cuttings yesterday from my Wandering Jew. They should be well rooted by the Swap.
Nice plant to carry over as a House Plant for next year's containers. All you need is the growing tips.
Such a nice, deep purple accent--just like the Purple Oxalis.
--May have some Oxalis too--I could dig them out from my W-Boxes and pots--but then they would
just be pile of limp stems...The Oxalis will be going dormant by end of October anyway.
All you really need is the small corms...
--Another thing I can bring is a few of the potted, Curly Spider plants. Jill--I got this one from you
a few of years ago. The first Swap you held at your house....I took 2 babies off of your HB.
--Still have several Tiger Lily babies growing in small pots....as well as this summer's batch of it's bulbils.
Maybe a 1/4 cup full?
--A bit early to take Coleus cuttings--so I won't...I have lots...Last winter/spring cured me of that!
--I have dug up 3 clumps of D-Lilies. A pretty orange one and the Frans Hals one.
Still need to divide the clumps
--I am planning to dig up my 2 old clumps of August Lily as well. That will be a hard job!
It is growing jammed against the brick edging.
--Will have several 4" clay pots with Pregnant Onion starts--3 years old now. Three per pot.
--For Pippi--I will dig up ONE small clump of my Mauve Lily. They still are small--
as I dug and replanted these just last year.
Everyone--don't forget to check our Trade Lists for seeds you may want.
Biennials, especially, should be seeded NOW!
Rudbeckias--Cleomies--Purple Cone Flowers--4 O'Clocks--Balsams--Impatiens--Foxgloves--
Columbines--Coreopsis--Gaillardias--Daturas--etc....I am sure there are more......
Gita
edited to add a few things....

That curly spider is still one of my favorites! I've got a nice little hanging pot of it at present, and it's so cute. I'd love a start of your wandering jew.
Sally, the redbud you gave me last year did fine all summer but never leafed out this spring. I was so sad to lose it! If you have an extra, I'd like to try again, but first dibs should go to those who haven't killed one.
I've got several different oxalis that are doing well in 12 inch pots, so I'm thinking I could get some starts out of the pots if people are interested. I'll check to see if I can find their names. Easiest thing might be to get a handful of those odd little tubers out of each pot and just let them go dormant. The purple one is supposed to be hardy, I think (although I brought mine in last year anyway), but the others that I have are tender here. They made great fillers in inside pots and hanging baskets over the winter.
I'd love to give you another redbud, Jill, and if some oxalis tubers fall out of that pot into my van...hmm...
I can divide some pink coneflowers. I have quite a lot of them.
I also have some Streptocarpus 'Blue Ice' babies (see the photo). They are still very small, but they should bloom in about 3 - 4 months. I am not sure exactly how many baby plants will be big enough to be potted up, but there will be several. It will be first come first serve if you Dmail me.
I have a baby AV 'Buckeye Edged Night'. If anybody is interested, please Dmail me. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/163303/
I'm looking for some variegated liriope, voodoo sedum, globemaster allium bulbs, any kind of hosta (I've never grown it, so I want to give it a try), groundcover phlox, Russian sage, and potted rosemary and thyme.
I have some chocolate chip ajuga and miscanthus. I also have a fuchsia in a hanging basket that stopped flowering in the July heat. I don't think I have the talents to overwinter it, but a more advanced gardener should be able to do it.
This is my first plant swap, so I'm not sure how it works! Do I need to find someone to do an even trade with?? I have a young garden, so I don't have a lot of things I can offer.
Thanks!
ssg== Pretty sure i have a pot of variegated liriope floating around out there, you're welcome to it! I've had very poor luck trying to divide and share groundcover phlox.
Sally---
Dividing a large clump of Ground-Cover flox is useless....
It is, most likely, ONE plant that has spread from it's base.
Even though it looks like you could divide it--You cannot.
Because it is ONE PLANT!!!!!
You ever see/buy one of those cardboard Boxes full of a CREEPING FLOX?
Do not even dream of dividing it!
Now--taking cuttings may work--but I do not know.....
G.
Thank you sallg! I'd really appreciate it!
ssgardener-
No problem!
Would you like to go to this thread
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1204370/
and tell us more about your garden plans? For example, are you hoping to fill an area with variegated liriope? Thats often a giveaway plant and you might get a lot with one swap.

Ruby---
Did we not, already, talk about the Oxalis? And--Did I not say I was starting a pot of it for you a while ago?
I think I did.......It is outside growing slowly----maybe I should move it to more sun to catch up a bit....
Gita
Hi Gita - I don't remember talking about it, but now that I have seen how lovely it is growing for you, I really want some. But, thank you and I will gladly accept the pot you have for me. What do you do with it over winter?
Ruby
Ruby---
The Oxalis enters a dormancy period in mid-late fall. It stops producing leaves.
When you see this happening--do not freak out and think you are doing something wrong.
It just wants a long winter's nap. STOP WATERING IT and just keep it somewhere out of the way.
A dribble of water, now and then, will not hurt.
Around February/early March--you will see new leaves growing. Then--resume regular care.
Mind you--this plant does not need to be watered a lot--as it grows from small corms.
Hope this helps....Gita
Beautiful picture Gita. Yippie. Yeah, I have been able to keep a green one alive for several years now thankfully. It has really flourished this summer. I have started several pots of it to sell and the original one is still fuller than ever.
I am excited about houseplants coming back in side this year. I plan to do a better job in seeing to their individual needs versus bringing them in and putting whever there is a spot to set them.
Looking forward to seeing everyone soon.
Ruby
Wow, Gita, those oxalis are something else -- and your mandevilla is stunning, also!
Sally, you gave me 3 starts of a blue creeping phlox, and they survived for a couple of years but didn't really get much bigger, then just didn't make it through their second winter. I agree, it's harder to divide that one than you'd think.
I'll see what I can do in terms of getting some thyme starts potted up, maybe some greek oregano also if it's still doing well out there. Rosemary, I probably won't have, because I don't seem to have good luck with cuttings of it, but I'll stick a couple and see what happens.
I also want to divide the hosta that's in my foundation beds... I don't know the name, but it's a 'Patriot' lookalike, I think... came from my friend Theresa's parents, and they've had it growing at their place for probably 30 years. It's a sturdy one!
Ssgardener, you can probably tell already that this is a friendly & informal group. This thread works well for arranging some trades in advance, and sometimes people want to do a specific arrangement for a special or unique plant, but for the most part our events seem to be more of a "plant sharing" than a "plant swap" as such... everybody brings their extras, whatever they have to share around, and everybody seems to go home with a good assortment. Maybe it's more like a Christmas cookie swap, where you arrive with 2 dozen of this and 2 dozen of that and go home with 4 dozen wildly assorted cookies.
ssgardener, I'd love a start of your chocolate chip ajuga -- that's such a cute plant! I'll get you some English thyme and some Rose Petal Thyme, and I'll see what else I can find a start of. If you're doing herb pots, be sure to get some clumps of Chocolate Peppermint and Kentucky Colonel Spearmint from my garden! (I think they're the two best-flavored mints.)
Thank you critterologist! I've never even heard of rose petal thyme!
I'll definitely bring my chocolate chip ajuga!
Hiya all - after a summer of total neglect my garden needs more stuff - I've killed off more plants than I care to think of - life has been in the way all summer (it's been a comedy of epic fails and errors) and my garden has suffered some serious losses - so, whatever y'all have to share I'd appreciate it :-)
Hey Bec- I could 'share back' some tallllll white Siberian iris, and regular blue Sibs, that you shared with me last year
Sally - those I believe are more than fine :)
Yay!! Its like I foster-gardened them for you!!
Bec, I believe we have fostered some Siberian Irises from your place too and can add your name to bring some of them back too. I know there are blue/purple ones and will ask John if there are others.
So far, no one has written to say that they would be wanting anything that we have offered. I hope that the new folks won't be shy about asking if they see something that might tickle their fancy. Please let us know, we have plenty, plenty of the listed items.
I also remembered that we have Sedum Sarmentosum by the buckets full if anyone wants some of it, let me know. I also have some Hens and Chicks that I will share if folks ask real nice. hahaha
So, I will go back and edit my Have and Wants list now to include those things. As always, looking very forward to one of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday.....with all you wonderful people.
Ruby
oh RUby---puh LEEEEEEZE may I have a couple hens, or even chicks LOL
I will put your name on a pot with momma and babes today Sally.
Ruby
Sally, I edited my post with some houseplants in case you are interested.
Ruby
I have Sedum sarmentosum here, too -- a literal bucket-full of extra rooted ones, plus all the cuttings anybody could want from the little mailbox bed (stick a piece in -- or near -- the ground, and it will root & spread!). It's one of the best groundcovers ever, especially for a hot dry spot, but it sure does spread like crazy!
I'd love some hens & chicks please Ruby. I've been planting this afternoon, putting a ring of dwarf mondo grass around my little dogwood in front... I'm going to plant some of Sally's sedums in the middle, and I think they'd be good there also. That little bed doesn't have a soaker hose, so it doesn't get much in the way of extra water... sedums & semps should do fine!
I'd also love some solid green spider plant, please, Ruby, and a start of wandering jew from either you or Gita. I should have Hawaiian Spider plant to share (similar to the variegated white/green, but it's larger and sturdier than the standard one, slow growing for me though), as well as cuttings of Alsobia 'Cygnet'. Would anybody like to re-home a couple of languishing orchids? They must be tough ones, as I haven't killed them yet, but they're barely hanging on.
I may also have some extra irises (named, but lost-tag, from an iris society member so they should be nice ones), depending on how many rhizomes it takes to go along the back border. I was sure hoping to have a bunch of my own irises to share, but they are mostly not looking so good. If any look divide-able as I get that bed cleared out, I'll post (with names, if their tags are still there LOL).
I have a full tray of 4" pots of Wandering Jew rooting. 3 cuttings in each. They are already rooted.
I will also bring some of my 2-3 yr. old Pregnant Onions.
Was re-potting them today in 4" clay pots (3 in each) when my house and patio rocked!
Maybe some of the newer people do not know about these yet....
I will also try to dig up and divide my August Lily Hosta. I have 2 lg. clumps....
My Mgr. wants some--I will re-plant some--but the rest will be available.
Have NO idea yet what is under the dirt there......
Gita
Sally - Ruby - the Irises are fine here, I have more than enough - it's everything else that has taken a beating :)
Roby, thank you!
Bec, gotcha- will bring anything else that pops up, (and pots/ bags itself lol) "besides" Sib irises
I want to know Sally's secret to self-potting plants!
Gita, thanks for getting all those cuties ready to share. The pregnant onions are very cool!
rubyw, I'd love some of your autumn joy, sedum Sarementosum, and any hens and chicks you can spare.
Thank you!
Hot dog, we are off to the races now. Some good old fashioned haves and wants being made known.
Thus far I have Critter down for some hens and chicks and a green spider plant
Sally for hens and chicks
SSgardener for Sedum Autumn Joy, Sedum Sarmentosum and Hens and Chicks
Becky, is there anything specific you can think of that you would like to have? It is possible that some of us have some things we can share but just don't have enough to list as having lots of. I would love to be able to give you something back to get things going at your place again. Huh, huh, huh?
Oh boy.....getting excited here folks.
Ruby
Alright - there are couple of things I saw listed that I would like to request from you good people.
Jill, I would love a Hawaiin Spider, I have a couple and love them. One has gone absolutely crazy with babies this summer. I would also like to have any Iris you might have to share.
Gita, I will take a pregnant onion or two unless you run short on them. They are cool plants.
Thanks everyone.
Ruby
Ruby, you're welcome to a baby spider cutting, but that's all I have from my Hawaiian spider as yet... it just started throwing spiders, so I don't have plants potted up from it. I'll keep you in mind with the irises... and if John is dividing any purple/pink/white DLs, LMK! :-)
Jill--
Is what you call "Hawaiian Spider" the same as my Curly Spider?
I have several cuttings rooted of that.
G.
Nope, the Hawaiian Spider is quite different.. the curly one (which I think is probably a cultivar called "Bonnie") is dainty, the other is larger than the standard one. Both are somewhat slow-growing, at least for me, taking longer than other varieties to get mature enough to start throwing spiders (hmm, somehow "throwing spiders" doesn't sound like something normally associated with maturity).
Jill--Do you have a picture of the Hawaiian Spider????
Gita
