I'm on a roll... and I'm getting some stuff outa the basement, too! Chantell, I think I found you another big pot, if you don't mind terra cotta colored plastic. :-)
Gold & Silver Plant Swaps Trades Haves Wants (Sept.10)
Jill - you rock!!! I prefer natural colors so terra cotta is PERFECT...but honestly I'm just happy for some...so no worries even if hot pink...LOL. I only have the two plumies...I was thinking that maybe the night blooming jasmine (now 7') might enjoy a bigger house - that's why I was requesting the 3rd one. No worries...I plan on hitting the Wally Worlds pretty soon ISO of clearance pots - so please don't give up anything you might need...ok?
Jill, do you have any pictures from previous swaps showing how people prepare their plants for the swap? I've only been to one plant swap and it was in a large pasture where people parked their vehicles and set up their plants outside of their vehicles. You had to walk around and exchange your "wares." I think SS gardener said this would be her first plant swap. How far in advance does one prepare for a swap? Maybe others may have some good input to share. I started potting up my plants on Saturday. Maybe I should have started earlier ? During the Hurricane, I stored all the plants in the back of the truck in the garage. I removed them yesterday and put them back on the patio and I've got to move them around again today to keep DH from fussing. I guess I should put them in shade to adjust to the transplanting? Guess I had better water them again this morning since they were in the garage for at least 12 hrs.
There is a lot of work involved in hosting an event such as a plant swap. I think we should all pitch in and help cleanup. I know there will be a number of us coming from a distance and want to get back on the road to home before dark. The plant swap I went to had a very large attendance. I offered ahead of time to clean up. I didn't think it was fair to leave the kind and generous hostess with that chore. Please ask everybody to be bring their food in disposable containers and take any left over food back home with them. Bring their own serving utensils, don't expect Jill to furnish them for you. If everybody pitches in to help clean up, it can be done in a timely manner.
Pot what you can, when you can, and don't sweat it! If it's newly potted, say so, and people will know to grow it on for a while in the pot so it can get good roots. It helps to label the pots with the plant name and your DG name (I love knowing where my plants came from, and in the hustle of an event like this I forget a lot of things!).
I haven't started dividing and potting yet because I've got a couple other projects going on... will try to get some things ready tomorrow.
And yes, help with cleanup would be appreciated. It hasn't been an issue at past swaps; people generally chip in when they see what needs doing. But thank you for the reminder -- as delicious as all the food is, there's always too much, and I'd really appreciate it if everybody took home any leftovers from what they brought!
:-)
Good notes about the leftover, and disposables, and cleanup. That helps right there, when people know they can just cleanup / remove whatever they brought. There won't be any leftover dumplings, we all know that for sure! I can bring my own chairs - did we discuss chairs/ tables?
Anyone want empty fourpacks/ sixpacks? I have a couple dozen. They are cut in fours/ sixes, and stacked.
Anyone for gallon milk jugs (wintersowing?) I know David's deli tub method sounds great but I can save several gallon jugs by the tenth.

Great idea Sally--No one has mentioned chairs or tables....
Jill--whatcha think???? I have quite a few lawn chairs--but, of course, I am riding with Sally----
and Robin may join us again.
Is she coming, sally???
Extra chairs are always welcome (I've got half a dozen, a couple of stools, benches in a couple locations, and 3 sitting rocks on the back patio). You may also find it useful to bring a little table to use with your swapping plants... I do have a couple of card tables and two of those white plastic folding tables (I will probably use one for my own plants, but the other should be available), so if you aren't bringing a table, don't sweat it!
Those who have been on one of my so-called garden tours in the past will enjoy a new feature -- an actual path! with stepping stones! and it goes all the way around! So I'm not the only person who knows where the "path" between the plants is. LOL Two guys were here this morning, helping carry & place the stones. Stone edges around some of the other beds, now, too. I'm a happy camper! Now I need to get some mulch for the beds between the new paths. :-)
I just had a horrible thought..what happens if it rains that day?
No worries... plenty of room inside (we've done it before), and we'll either swap under the canopies or park the cars elsewhere & swap in the garage.
We were mostly inside during the first fall swap I hosted, due to mosquitoes... they've been bad some days recently, OK on others, so we'll just cross our fingers. I stocked up on citronella candles & bug spray! :-)

Robin is more than welcome to ride with me, I figure she'll confirm as we get closer- and we'd leave here an hour before the start of swap time. so allow another half hour or so for 'hi how are yous' at my house, and quick tour if desired.
Yeah rain is not so horrible, not like I'm wearing my silk and pearls LOL
Looks like Chantell and I need to take a separate trip to see Jill - I'm heading to NJ for a really huge event I've been invited to - soooo, I won't see y'all!
We will miss you Bec, and yes Sally, I would like to hitch a ride with you.
Gotcha Robin!
Well I am FOR SURE not wearing silk and pearls w/o Becky and Chantell.
Aw heck on Bec. We will miss seeing you Becky and Chantell. Bec, would you like for us to mail the Lily of the Valley to you or leave them with Jill or someone else that lives closer to you and you fetch them later on? Let me know, I am open to either.
I have been to swaps where folks dig the plants they are sharing the morning of the swap and bring them bare root. Pretty much any thing seems to go at these things. If folks are very organized and have the time beforehand to pot things, fine, if not, that is fine too. I am just always thrilled to get a chance to have the opportunity to own some of the plants that I havent had before.
As for the size pots we are requesting, the boss just said that we are in need of one gallon or one and a half gallon pots if anyone has any to get rid of. Thanks in advance folks.
I am really loving this thread. Can't wait to see all you good people again.
Ruby
Ruby, I just set aside a stack of trade gallons (the ones that really hold something like 3 quarts; they're round)... looks like 40 or 50... nobody else has mentioned wanting any that size, so most/all will probably go home with you. I've also got some assorted carrying trays and plug trays that Rick brought to the seed swap a couple years back (most of those trade gallons are probably from him also), and I'll just make a stack so John can take what he wants.
Thanks Critter. Now the issue will be if everything will fit for the ride home. hahaha
Ruby
Updated my post above - take lots of pics so Bec and I can see the fun...hugs all
Added two Frans Hals daylilies to my post above. The clump I moved was not that big but when i started pulling it apart there were many fans, so I figured why not.
I added a few things as well----Took away one--the Rosemary..
Gita
I "found" two volunteer Clematis virginiana out front this morning, and I will dig/pot them if they can find new homes (otherwise I'll let them stay in place until the spring swap). The mother plant is blooming now, delicate clusters of white blooms, and it looks so cool scrambling up the ornamental pear.
Sally, would you like a sweetgum baby? It's a volunteer that I saved during our clearing efforts along the back by yelling "no! es beuno!" just in the nick of time. LOL You can take a look and decide if you think it should be dug up this year and potted on or if it should stay put for a while (with your name on it).
I need to update my list with all these things I keep chatting about, but that may have to wait until after the weekend... Jim's folks are here, and we're having a few friends & neighbors over tomorrow. :-)
Womder if the Clematid would survive and grow up a maple trunk, in shade....
Oh, sweetgums have beautiful fall colors ...I have so little room for another 'anything ' much less a tree thing...
"Es bueno!" cute-- you were probably signing 'good' at the same time, involuntarily.
; ^)
Sally, that clematis is definitely a part shade variety... my front doesn't get much sun, but even under the tree it still gets a few hours. You might check out what Brushwood has to say about it (that's where I got it).
If no one else wants the Clematis, I could try it on my silver maple. The foliage is thin and the tree has no other trees on its south and west. hm I dunno...it has to survive maple roots there.
I would like to ask for a Frans Hal Day Lily from either Sally or Gita please. Who ever has a spare.
John was surprised when he looked at the list of items that have been asked for. He is used to bringing a lot more than have been requested so far.....so, if anyone wants anything further....let us know.
Ruby
Ruby--
I spent the better part of today digging up and packaging up divisions of 2-3 kinds of Day Lilies...
It was really hard work--as the clumps were old and very tightly intertwined...
Dividing these is NO small task!!! Many of the existing leaves were lost in the battle....
BUT! Who cares? It is the roots we want this time of the year. Right????
I have this "Shifting around" thing going....Too long to explain.....
Dig up this--re-plant it there. Dig up what was there--and re-plant it where the other ones were.,...
Same old--same old.....NO space for anything new!
Anyway---I packaged up 3 kinds of DL to share. An Orange one--the Frans Hals--
and another orange one that I do not know the name of....I just call it the "LIly by the Stump".....
Did not think all this would take 6hrs. or such to do---But it did....
Everything I have to share is now wrapped up in newspapers and bagged i plastic baggies.
Still have the August Lily Hosts to go....That will be a major job to dig them up and dividing them...
Wish me luck!!!
Ruby---There will be plenty of "Frans Hals "D-Lilies to share! Do not worry!
Sally is also bringing some. I will also have a large amount of bits and pieces of roots to
plant and experiment with. The Frans Hals DL root bits that fell off in the battle of dividing these.
HEY! They all have small roots---so if yo want to be experimental--there are a lot....
I DO NOT like to leave things to the last minute--so this is now all done! Makes me happy!
Next will be the August Lily Hostas.
OHHH! Help me out!!!!!................Gita
I've been doing organization, cleaning, and cooking, getting ready for Jim's parents' visit this weekend and our party last night (which went really well; fun to have friends we know from several different venues get together and enjoy each other!)... So my reward is, I hope, to get in some serious play time in the garden this week. I've been mentioning plants as we go along, and I'll add them to my list when they're dug and bagged or potted. :-)
Theresa said she'd like a clematis virginiana (she saw it blooming here yesterday), and you're welcome to the other one, Sally, but I'm not sure about maple roots... mine wasn't that vigorous the first couple of years until it got established... what if you gave it a big pot at the base of the maple?
Ruby, you know people are going to jump all over John's plants at the swap! Our swaps seem to vary in terms of how much pre-arranged swapping we do, and I know some folks just figure they'll take "pot luck" because anything they receive will be wonderful. :-)
Ruby- they're all very nice but I just don't have room for hardly anything new until I remove something that's underperforming. This fall, or probably in the spring, I need to seriously rearrange some perennials in one bed.
Clem virginiaa is the sweet autumn, right? Lemme think on it...
no no no, I wouldn't give anybody Sweet Autumn clematis! What a thug! I finally had to remove mine. D. virginiana has similar dainty white blooms but lacks the invasive/thuggish qualities of Sweet Autumn. I believe it's a native species. I got mine here: http://www.gardenvines.com/shop/small-flowered-clematis-4/clematis-virginiana-227.html
Hi, all---
So I don't bring potted plants that no one is interested in--please let me know
if any of you are interested in my small X-Mas Cactus. I have quite a few.....
They are in 2" or 3" pots and growing well. I expect many of them may bloom this year.
Just have to move them away from my front door location where there is a light on all night.
I believe they need dark to initiate blooming--as well as being left outside for a cold snap.
Also--Is there any interest in my Chrisanthemum Pacificum? They are in 4" pots.
I only have a few to share...maybe 3 or 4 and a 6-pack cell pack.
Asking b/c there are 3 of us coming up in Sally's car. Less stuff to find room for.
Thanks--Gita
Gita, is there any chance you have a pink & purple CC for Joyanna? We have a big hot pink one and an assortment of other colors (like yours, small plants in little pots), but I had oen quite a few years back that was pink with purple around the lower petals, and it was really pretty.
Does anybody need/want a medium sized white-edged hosta (looks like Patriot)? If not, I'll wait to divide it and concentrate on a couple of "named" varieties like Striptease that look big enough to share this year.
Jill---
No--I do not have a pink one--nor a purple one---mostly the hot pink.
I have a couple red ones and--maybe--one or two Apricot ones.
The writing always fades--so I am not even sure what is what....I tried to re-label them this AM.
I DID learn to recognize the way the red ones look---kind of more bunched up...
If you do not have a red one--I can bring you one.....
Have you written JBerger? She grows and sells CC. She has a GH and all.
I sent her a few of my (common) cuttings last year--and she was very happy to get them...??
I will keep my eyes out in my travels.....
See you soon! Hope the weather gets better. It has been raining here now for 2 days.
The two hurricanes down below acting up...
Gita
I'll keep an eye out for the pink/purple one and might drop JB a line as you suggested -- thanks! I've got red and apricot in my little pots from Doc's cuttings, although I no longer remember which is which. After they've bloomed, I'll put aside any duplicates for the seed swap party!
Raining here too, and every time I check the weekend forecast it has been changed again. We have plenty of space inside, so I'm not overly concerned about rain, although it would sure be nice to have a pretty day!
We can "punt" and do our plant swapping in the garage (we'll just move the cars down the street), but everybody has to promise to ignore the incredible amount of junk along the walls! LOL
I am used to junk--it is EVERYWHERE in my house!!!!
Never offended by it--I understand!!!! Not to worry! I am NOT a prissy person.....
Please remember to show--or tell- me what a "non UV fading" marker looks like.
I asked at Staples--and they had NO clue!
I am resorting to using a pencil. That seems to last forever......but a Sharpie is so much more convenient.
Gita
Sharpie makes a black marker labeled "Industrial Sharpie." It is much more UV & heat resistant than regular sharpie. I have labels that can still be read 3 years later. Silver metallic sharpie also lasts really well and shows up great on black pots. But a label is a label, so whatever works for you is fine!
I see Amazon has them at a decent price (less than $1 each), so I'm going to order a pack. I'll share! :-) http://www.amazon.com/Sharpie-Industrial-Permanent-Markers-13601/dp/B00006IFEO/ref=lh_ni_t
Thanks, Jill---
I will be glad to buy a couple off of you!
Gita
Critter - if you don't mind cuttings I've had my grandmas CC since she passed 16 years ago. I would love to share some cuttings for Miss Joyanna - bright fushia blooms. I could even start some of these I think for you. Let me know.... I also have one that a patient had given me when I worked for the Dr. - her's are a pinkish bloom as well....might be white and pink...can't remember
And if you have enough, I too would love to buy one of those sharpies from you...

LMK if people are interested in the silver metallic sharpies... looks like I can get them from amazon prime for about $1.50 each (better than $2+ at the store), and if I get a chance to check at Staples I'll see if I can find a big pack of them cheaper.
Chantell, Joyanna would love a couple of special cuttings from your grandma's CC! Thank you! My big CC is looking a little dehydrated at present, but if I can get it perked up enough for cuttings, I'll share it also.

Here's my "hot pink" one in bloom:
I'll get some started for her and if you end up ordering any of the "Industrial Sharpie" in black let me know...
