Thanks, Chantell. I've got a box of 12 ordered (Jim decided to do Amazon Prime, and I'm enjoying the free shipping also!); LMK if you need a couple mailed in a BE.
Gold & Silver Plant Swaps Trades Haves Wants (Sept.10)
That hot pink and white CC is what I have oodles of rooted cuttings of.
If anyone is interested.....Gita
Gita,
Can I have a couple of those hot pink and white CC cuttings, please? Thanks. See ya Saturday.
Adding Bigroot perennnial geranium to my haves
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2784/
Ooh, me please, Sally! I love hardy geraniums... they seem to do especially well in my garden. Do you have the white 'Biokovo' one? If not, I'll try to get a division of mine for you or root you some next spring. :-)
YAY! You got it! this thing roots like a champ, is nearly evergreen with fall foliage 'color', never looks wilty... ..and I'd love a piece of white if you can spare
8 ^)
Hello again all - Lots of talk of Christmas Cactus. Gita, I have the three pots of cuttings you shared with me of the CC sometime back. I believe they were just red and pink. If you have white ones extra, I would like to have some of it please. I will also be very appreiciative of the Frans Hal and any other Day Lilies you are offering.
I was looking around in some of my pots earlier and I have an abundance of perennial Portulaca if anyone would like a pot. I love that plant because my mother always grew it when I was growing up.
I can offer some slips of a Fire Cracker Begonia if anyone is interested in cuttings. I suppose tomorrow I will re-type the list of haves that folks have asked for. If I have missed putting your name and your request on the post tomorrow, please let me know so I can add it.
John and I have been really surprised with so few requests. We usually have a car full going to these things, and at the moment it doesn't look as though we are taking very much at all. Any of the things I have mentioned, we have plenty of and I can certainly bring extras if anyone is interested.
Oh yeah, you all have taught me something I didn't know today. I wasn't aware of there being an Apricot Christmas Cactus. If anyone has a slip or two of that, I would love to have it to try. See all you good folks soon.
Ruby
Ruby, I haven't posted on behalf of my friends (Theresa & her folks, Al & Irene), because -- like me, and like a lot of the folks here -- they love just about every plant. I've made a few specific requests, but I have a good bit of space opened up in my garden, and I love daylilies, irises, just about everything you've mentioned... I just figured I'd let somebody else have "dibs" if they wanted something specific, since I'd be as delighted with one as with another. I can always find room for a daisy or an iris! And in terms of houseplants, those "string of pearl" babies will fly out of your hands when people see how cool they are (I've got a little one, and it's too cute!).
I've never seen John go home with plants he brought to a swap. Just sayin'. :-)
Ruby---
I have never had a pink or a white CC. Mostly just the hot-pink/white ones--like Jill posted...
It is quite a common one....
I do not have enough of the Apricot one to share. Sorry!
Ruby----
There have been fewer requests for plants this time of year because it is the 2nd plant swap this year.
It IS fall--and not too many people want plants to start at this time of year--unless they are perennials or cuttings of..
.
The spring Plant Swap is more active in requests...as things are Gung-Ho to grow at that time of year..
I don't think we have ever had two Plant Swaps in the same year????
Gita
yes we have... I have hosted 2 previous fall swaps, and there were also spring swaps those years. :-)
We do have a lot more seedlings in spring, but this is a great time of year to divide perennials and a great time to plant, also. I have really good luck potting smaller things (that don't yet have good roots) into gallon pots and overwintering them on the patio, then planting the following spring (or even the following fall if I get behind LOL).
Does anybody have any Jolly Bee or Rozanne hardy geranium to share?
Yep, my garden helper, John says that fall is the time to really garden and says that the spring swaps are almost too late to plant things. I, myself prefer the cooler temperatures too to work outside.
Critter, I have you down already for pink, purple or white Day Lilies, Hens and Chicks, Green Spider Plant and Wandering Jew. Are you saying that your visitors might be interested in having something if we bring them along?
I am happy to report that Catbird put in a request, so I am able to add a few more things to my list. I will either type out what we are bringing and to who, later today or tomorrow morning.
John just walked in and he has some extras that we will bring along, so no worries. Hopefully everything will find a good home. Getting really excited about this swap!!!
Ruby
Yes, I'm trying to say that any extras that John might bring will find homes, either with my friends or with other people coming to the swap, I'm sure! And we'll try to send you home with some goodies too, of course. :-)
Sometimes these pre-swap threads are really active with requests, and sometimes there's more day-of-swap trading. But with the exception of the time I brought 3 trays of tomato seedlings, I haven't seen a lot of plants going begging for homes!
I have another---"IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED" OFFER.....
NOT plants! Forgive me!
Been trying to clean and straighten up my downstairs storage area....A chore long planned!
Came across a box-full (25-30) of "Family Circle" and "Woman's Day" magazines.
Mostly from the 70's. A few from the late 60's. PLEASE let me know if anyone would like to have them..
Otherwise--they go to Good Will.
I have been sitting and paging through them (Yeah! I needed to do that!!!).....just to see if there may be something
I really want to cut out.
It has been a hoot!!!!
--Full page cigarette ads
--7 cents of coupons--Whoopie!
--Hairstyles of the 70's---all look like wigs!
--Crocheted clothing and dresses....HUH?
--All kinds of macrame stuff. OH! I used to be heavy into this!
--Crewel Embroidery--My Mom and I both did a lot of this.
--Love advice of the 70's....teee...heee...
--Vintage recipes. Now these are worth looking at!
--X-Mas crafts--cute!
--News in medicine--30 years ago???? Right!
--Flash backs to Fisher price toys.........
--Ryan O'Neal kissing Ali Mc Graw----AHHHH>>>>
---and a lot more.
There are also 2 "McCalls Needlepoint" magazines.
I shudder to think I used to do all that.......Let me know--and I will bring the box down.
Gita
Alrighty folks - I am going to list here the items I plan to bring to those who have requested things and also list what I have requested from others. Please take a look and get back with me today, because I may not have time to check the thread tomorrow.
As of this morning my list reads:
Critter - Purple, pink or white Day Lilies - Green Spider Plant - Hens and Chicks - Wandering Jew
Sally - Hens and Chicks
Ssgardener - Hens and Chicks - Sedum Autumn Joy and another Sedum which I am unsure of name - Sedum Sarmentosum - Hosta
Terry - Sweet Woodruff
Pippi - Mary Todd Day Lily

Enalg - String of Pearls
No more requests for String of Pearls please, all have been spoken for. Maybe by next spring swap I will have more available. If anyone wants anything further from our offers, please let your request be known before 6 PM today. Thank you.
Here are the things that I can remember requesting from others:
Gita - My best plant supplier it seems - Purple Oxalysis - Angel Wing Begonia - Pregnant Onion - Frans Hal Day Lily
Ssgardener - Chocolate Drop Coleus
If any of you have me listed as making a request and I just haven't noted on my sheet, please let me know.
Thank you all, especially our wonderful Jill for hosting this event and I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.
Ruby
Thanks, Ruby! I need to find something for you besides pots, LOL... How about a little lilac? I think it's a fragrant lavender one (I can find the name), although there's a chance thtat it's a start of Hart's double white. I think you might have oregano, mints, and thymes from me, but if you need more, just LMK.
Dang it, it needs to stop raining so I can get outside! At this rate, I'm going to be digging and potting frantically when everybody arrives. LOL!
Ruby---
You also wanted some of the August Lily Hosta from me. It is all dug up, divided, and each section wrapper properly.
There will be more than people asked for--but I don't mind taking some back home to share at work.
Then--there is also the Hydrangea cuttings. With all this rain--about half of them rotted out as they were
exposed to the rain--had no roots yet... Should have had them under cover.....shoulda....woulda...coulda....:o(
Anyway--I dug out the ones that looked OK and put them in a smaller W-Box. Not the big one I was promising you.
Please keep them somewhere where they can dry out....Then--just moist so roots can form.
That's all as far as I know....Have a safe trip!
Gita
if the hydrangeas are tip cuttings, it might work to pop a milk jug top over them (cap off, like winter sowing) once they dry out some...
Would anybody like a piece of Galangal Ginger? It's tropical, so it has to come in for the winter. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/60085/ Lovely fragrance to the leaves, like ginger and lemon and sweet floral. I know Chantell wanted a piece, but I thought I'd check to see who wanted one tomorrow before I tackle chopping and repotting (my mother plant has a monster root ball). Mine gets about 3 feet tall in a big pot, but it's well behaved in that it's vertical, not a sprawling plant.
I'm working under the deck canopy now, and between showers I'll get out into the yard.
Do I even need to say that, with the recent rain, mosquitoes are pretty bad again? Forecast is for a high of about 80, 30% chance of rain... I'd suggest lightweight pants and even a long-sleeved shirt or light jacket (or raincoat, LOL) to pull over whatever you're wearing when you go outside... that will give you some extra protection. I've got bug spray ready by both doors and anti-itch stuff in the bathroom!
I
Jim helped me bring my potting bench up, so it's sitting near the deck now, with potting mix in the tubs and nursery pots below... feel free to help yourself so you can pot up anything that's bare root.
:-)
Come on, SUN! It peeked through for a moment just now.
I wrestled 2 pieces of galangal out of the pot... tough roots! So that's one division to restart my plant and one for Chantell... and anybody else who wants a piece might have to chop out their own chunk.
John visited a friend in Northern Virginia yesterday and said it rained there all day and he actually ran in to a highway detour on the way home due to flooding near Manassas. We haven't had rain this week but had some the end of last week I believe. I hope there isn't the wet stuff tomorrow, but we will make do the best we can.
Okay Jill, I would love a Lilac. I want John to cut a piece of the Galangal Ginger for me too Critter. Sounds interesting. I also noted that I will be getting the Hydrangea starts and an August Lily Hosta from Gita. Thanks ladies.
See all you great folks tomorrow.
Ruby
OK, Ruby, the lilac is yours. it's a cute little thing, and it's going to love getting out of that pot. I found a little pot in the basement that would be great for getting a piece of galangal going, and I'll try to remember to bring that up tonight. (It's a no-hole pot, and I found a nursery pot that fits inside nearly to the bottom, so it'll have a little water reservoir, which it will love.)
Gita, if you have a hosta or two left at the end of the swap, I'd love to bring it to my DMIL... she's re-purposing her rose garden as a partial shade garden with just a couple of roses (there's just not enough sun anymore; sad but true).
We've really never had a problem with leftover plants, but just in case I did have an idea... if you have an extra plant or two at the end of the swap, and would like them to go to a good home, please put them (potted if possible) on the back patio... I can pass them along to be planted at a local church or retirement community. I've overwintered potted plants just fine on my back patio before, so they wouldn't have to be planted out this fall. Or, as Gita suggested -- take them back home and give them to coworkers or neighbors.
Jill--
I KNOW I will have extra August Lily Hostas....
In the battle of dividing them--many sections broke off--but they all have roots.
Dividing Hosta is like the battle of the wills----May the strongest win!!!!
Even the small divisions are packaged in Newspaper and then in a plastic bag. Should be several available....
I also will have a lot of extra Day-Lilies--both the Orange ones and the Frans Hals....Same story.....
I cannot tell you how many small corms (with small roots attached) fell off in this battle!!!
I have about a cup-full of these--if anyone has the patience to nurture them for about 2-3 years...
Like--start them in 3"-4" pots. Bury the pots in your beds and wait.....These are like little, naked peanuts....
with roots attached.
Suggestion to any of you. DO NOT wait 5 or 6 years to divide D-Lilies or Hosta!!!
The suggested 3 years would make the job a lot easier.
My car is all packed--Cam Dip made yesterday---been watching TV. Just need to take a shower
and sleep soundly (YEAH???) through the night. Meeting up with Sally about 10:30AM.
Forecast here said it will be in the 80*'s--with a SLIGHT chance for more rain. We ALL need a break!!!!
Sounds good! See Ya! Gita
I'm last minute here - just haven't had much time to be working in the gardens or much of anything else fun either. I'll walk around this morning and see what looks easy to dig up and bring, but it will be pretty pathetic. Anyway, I like these get togethers mainly so I can see all you wonderful people! Did I hear Sally say that we will be wearing our silks and pearls if the rain lets up??? I guess I need to find mine - har har har - well, I looked hard and all I found was a garden hat and crock knock-offs. Plants are on the back burner for me this time, but I can't wait to visit with everyone today. Terri
Jill, I don't think the Lilac made it home with us unless you gave it to John and he unloaded and placed it some where other than the porch. Will ask him when I next see him.
Terri, shoot, so glad you made it. I too believe along with exchanging plants, just seeing some of my most favorite folks in the world is what a plant swap is all about. I lie not when saying that the plant swap are something that both John and I love doing. It really takes a lot to get me out of the house these days, but a plant swap will do it every time.
I would like to extend an invitation for any of you to visit our home any time you find yourselves in these parts. Darius, a member of Daves for many years should call our place her second home. For several years she was visiting the University of Virginia Medical Center for her health issues and each trip she stays with us. She has come three and four times a year some years. It has been a while now since her last visit but she knows she is always welcome here.
In either March or April, Buttoneer and her husband visited our place one Sunday afternoon. They are members of the Virginia Gold Miners Asssociation and visit a few counties over several times a year too. They have been here for the past two weeks I believe, but it didn't work for us get together this trip.
So, those of you who find yourselves traveling south, please feel free to add a couple hour stop over to your travel agenda and drop in and visit us. One of these days, it may work for us to host one of these swaps. We will see.
Here is hoping that everyone has a great week coming up. So glad to see some cooler weather occur. Take good care all.
Ruby
Ruby, I'm sorry... I looked around on people's "piles," but I didn't see the lilac. I had put it on the side patio next to my thymes and stuff, and it wasn't there when I looked for it to give to John. My bad; I hadn't managed to put names on things like I thought I'd get around to that morning. So, if somebody has a 2 gallon pot with an unknown shrub (with several tiny "trunks), it's a light purple lilac! My dark purple lilac from my great-aunt Erna looks like it has several "water shoots" on it, so I'm going to try to separate those and pot them up... I will get one of those to you instead! I also managed to totally forget to grab you a handful of iris rhizomes from Oklahoma! I'll try to do better next time. :-&
No problem Jill, we are not lacking for plants to work on. A lilac at another time will be just fine.
I also was thinking yesterday that along with the bags I brought to your house there was a small white pharmacy bag with silver colored charms in them. I didn't see them on the gift table or haven't heard you say that you got them. It makes no never mind who got them, but I thought I would check and hopefully they haven't been thrown out. The charms are mainly a single rose and a couple of derby types of hats with flowers in them. I tried to buy garden themed things. Have you seen them or were they taken on the gift table?
Thank you so much again for hosting the swap. I had a great time and oh yeah, the dumplings were out of this world yummy.
Ruby
Rats!! I just found Ruby's lilac. It was hiding; guess I failed to tell it that it was going to a far better home! I'll put it into a bigger container, and it will be waiting for you!
I'm still trying to get everything sorted out post-swap, because I've also been trying to put up some tomatoes and green beans and peppers and... well. I haven't come across it yet, but I will check for the charms. Were they meant for the gift table? Would it be OK if I put them on the gift table for the Feb. seed swap?
Sally, I have a question about the quince you gave me next spring... how big does it get, and is it an edible or an ornamental variety? I'm hoping I put it in an appropriate spot!
I'm trying to space things better with my garden re-do. I eyeball how much space I think the plant will need, and then I go back a shovel-width further to dig the hole. Joyanna and I have been planting out shrubs, including a Bubby-bush from Sally (the "dead" one that didn't look quite totally dead when I dug it up, so I potted it, and it actually bloomed this spring) and a Nikko Blue hydrangea from Brent (who has been AWOL too long!).
We also planted the 2 pink "noid" DLs from John, and I'm looking for the best spots for the other 2 tall ones he brought me... the short one was perfect for an opening around the outside of the island bed. Gita, your orange DL is going into an opening in my island bed, near a couple of maroon-ish ones that I grew from seed. Thank you!!
Sally---
Your Red-Bud Tree sapling will find a happy home in my Manager Donn's Garden.
He will take anything......
Your white Milkweed was ecstatically accepted by John in "Rental"....He is the man who
likes to just have whatever is "native" to this area in his garden.
Thanks to all! Gita
GIta, I am pleased to have given you those things to re-give= knowing you are very good to those people already!
Awww---Thanks, Sally!
You ARE also so very good to people---and ME...
Takes one to know one........Gita
I 'stole' some of Jills purple Oxalis, a little scooping yielded about a dozen actually, and planted them today in the pussytoes patch. Thanks Jill! Hope that wasn't too many (cheesy grin). My Galangal is potted after soaking in water- with a lot of mosquito wigglers. I have to get out and make sure I've dumped everything that held storm water..
Sally---
I can send you more itsy-bitsy rhizomes of the purple Oxalis as soon as all the
plants go dormant.
You cannot imagine how the Oxalis took over all my containers....What a hog!
A pretty hog!
That pot I gave Ruby was a mixed planter with petunias and such.
The Oxalis is the only plant that survived. I just gave her the whole pot.
I have ALL these to share--see picture--as I have 2 nice pots already.
Be a while, though till I can dig them up. Are they hardy by any chance?????
This is 2 of my 3 clay W-B that I keep on my wrought Iron, small side entry porch.
I never use that door!
Sally, I hope you got some from the other containers with Oxalis also, although I think only the purple is supposed to be hardy... but they're easy to tuck into containers inside. I appreciate your being willing to do DIY cuttings/divisions -- I plumb ran out of time, and I know DGers know how to help themselves without destroying the plant! :-)
Gita, the Oxalis is not hardy in our area, although occasionally a couple of them might survive the winter.
The 'bulbs' I gave you this spring stayed in the garage last winter. I dug them up after the first frost and put them in a box with peat moss. Just a note - if you plant them in the ground, you do need to dig them up before the leaves completely disappear so you know where they are :-).
Donner---
I had a pot of these before you gave me yours. Bought it on clearance at a grocery Store a few years ago.
I usually just let the pot "sit around" during the dormancy period. Dribble a bit of water over it--now and then.
Then it would just start growing again in the spring.
Should the corms be dug up--like you did? Is that better than leaving them in the pot?
As you can see from the above picture--there won't be a shortage of corms...
I have to say that this Oxalis hogged most of the space in these W-Boxes....
I think digging those up is a given--as I usually pull up everything in these W-Boxes for the winter....
Refill them in spring with fresh soil mix.
Thanks--Gita
Ruby! I found the charms!! Joyanna said they would make pretty earrings, so she and I will find some beads to go with them and turn them into earrings or maybe a bracelet and put them on the gift table in Feb. if that's OK with you. :-)
Gita thanks , and I will take you up on getting some more purple Oxalis at some time in the future. They are very pretty mixed with the pink impatiens.
Jill/ Sally- I found a few purple Oxalis resprouted in two places this year which must have overwintered. (I only ever had a few, I guess I tucked them in out there to see.) I have also had 'luck' with a few other things which seems to say since I am down near the Bay I may be getting a half- zone or so of warmth that a lot of central MD doesn't get.
Yes, I think those purple 'Triangularis' ones and maybe also the 'Iron Cross' ones (green leaves with distinct purple thumbprint markings) are hardy in zone 7, maybe into zone 6bwith protection (extra mulch, microclimate near a big rock or foundation wall). I have several other varieties however that are listed as being hardy in zone 8 or warmer. If anybody scooped a few of those out of pots, let me know, I can probably figure out names based on what I ordered last spring, from Sunshine, I think
Jill--
I think I got some of the green-with-purple from you (??) or someone at a Swap last year.
Or--maybe I got it somewhere else......
I know I planted them in a sunny corner in front of my Knockout Rose.
Since I did not see anything coming up there in the spring--I assumed that hey did not make it through the winter.
I was not sure it was hardy????
SO--I planted a Gaillardis in that same spot, which has been growing well.
Then--I noticed ONE plant of this Oxalis growing to one side of it. Need to put a marker near it.....
I first saw this Oxalis in a bed by the entrance to a Senior Center....thought it HAS TO BE hardy....
Went to look just now--it was already gone...
