Right now its 78 and cloudy in Abilene at 6:15 pm. We're not suppose to get any rain, but glad for the cool. I think I'll see what I can get done in the yard tomorrow. Hope everyone in east Texas got some rain out of Lee. The West Texas Fair will be starting in a week or two. WE almost always get some rain. I"m wishing for a small, but very wet, hurricane!
How hot is it?
BE SAFE Lisa. It is a tinderbox out today and there is smoke all over the air tonight.
You too I'm really sensitive to smoke, had to use the inhaler. I smelled smoke this morning but nothing was said on the news so I thought it was just me, but it made my throat tickle so I knew something was up. ATM it looks like Bastrop has got the worst of it. As long as Ive lived here Ive never seen so many fires in one day. When I was driving my son to a friends this evening Hwy 29 was closed due to a fire but I haven't heard anything about it. After growing in CA you'd think I'd be used to it, we got evacuated more then once. But it seems to just make the anxiety worse. Be Safe Everybody!
Choctaw Nation. Will check it out, thanks.
Hope this cool stays around a week or two so can get some yard work done.
Linda posted a scary link in another place. It is scary, and without air support, even worse...

Also a friend of mine posted this on Facebook:
To any of my friends with firefighting experience (ex-military comes to mind): Central Texas has dozens of wildfires burning right now, so many that they are asking for anyone with any firefighting experience to call 512-978-1187 ASAP. This is for firefighters only, not an information line.
I smell smoke here but I believe this one is from a neighbor that keeps a smoker going on holidays. Sure hope they don't let it get out of hand tonight with the winds up like they are.
Found out that family of my SILs DH were evacuated from Steiner today. They're staying at a hotel tonight but will probably end up with family and friends tomorrow. They're having trouble containing any fires with the winds blowing like they are. :(
So far no more fires here and it was 68 when I got up this morning. i opened my windows.
73 here with a strong breeze. Back door is i open and its glorious!
Its in the 70's here but windy. It feels like Fall has arrived but Im praying for the people dealing with fires. Its so dry I know it could be me, just lucky at this point.
It was 60 at 9 this morning. Watered and pulled weeds. very pleaseant!! Hoping the folks in the Hill Country get calm winds today. My mom is in Marble Falls and brother's family in Georgetown.
microclimate here ........some spotted rains around this summer, but the last rain that could be measured on my acreage was in May, and prior to that very little in the winter of 2010 and the spring of 2011. Soil is sand like talcum powder
The top part of this picture is the normal water level, what water is still there we have pumped in from the wells.
Heat isnt bad but there is a fire in Leander which is the town to the South. They have evacuated and some houses have burned, there was a small brush fire in LH yesterday. The air is really smokey. I haven't seen this since I lived in CA 20 yrs ago. Bastrop and Steiner Ranch have been hit the worst. I thought everything would be better once the temps dropped guess I didnt count on the wind and fires.
My nephew and his family live in Leander. I'm in a panic. Haven't been able to contact anyone to see if they are safe.
Where about in Leander? I think the fire was west of 183 near New Hope and Bagdad Rd. It smells like they may have got it put out. We were driving and got on a little hill, we could see 4 spots where fires were burning and the air was thick with smoke.
They are on Hilltop Dr. Haven't been there so I don't know where that is. Heard from my SIL today that they are safe for the time being. Their best friends have been evacuated. I pray you are not in danger.
Arson in the woods near Whitewright TX. Big grass fire also.
Fire damage to the Trenton VFD pumper truck.

Wicked people.
LouC-thank you for the prayers. I'm going to pass them along to the families that really need them ATM. We are fine, except any little bit of smoke makes it hard for me to breath. It's not near as windy today and that should help. Since we are N. of the fires we are not in any immediate danger but everything is so dry I know that can change in a instant. I think a lot of the smoke we smell is from the Ft Hood fire. I'm glad to hear your family is fine but so sad for those that aren't.
*feel free to cross post this on any media of your choice.. details verfied through multiple sources*
The Brackenridge Main Event Center in Edna has 88 stalls, 3 Arenas, and several pens available for evacuees from the fires. 60 RV Sites too! Please pass this info on to others who may be looking for a place to go! Call 361-781-4052 Cammie Pearson, Manager.
I'm going out on a limb here, and that's okay. Use care when fussing about the smoke and how bad it smells. Lots of people have lost their homes, beloved pets, and property from the fire. Hard to breathe doesn't really compare to "homeless and nowhere to go", IMO.
Angel-you can go right out on any limb you choose, especially since I didnt mention JUST my breathing issues, in fact I answered LouC question. Im well aware of the dangers of fire this is not my first rodeo nor my first fire. Ill no longer post on this thread for fear I might offend you. Since you have obviously not read my previous posts. Im sure you already know this but ashma kills too, not that you would care. IMO
I notice nobody has posted since your post, nice way to shut down a thread.
Girls, we all need each other's support. The ruler of all evil wants nothing more than to divide God's children. Let's pray for each other now. It heals all hurts, I promise.
Amen Lou. The Bastrop fire is now accounting for 30000 acres and over 500 homes lost. A friend took her horse trailer out on Monday to help evacuate.
We were pretty lucky - a fire broke out a couple of miles from our home, but AFD quickly put it out.
Keep praying for those still affected by the fires...there were over 3000 alone from the Bastrop area and more to come since they haven't contained any part of the fire yet.
Just received a message from a friend. Her BIL & sister are evacuating their brand new home near Magnolia. I know we have a DG'er from Magnolia but I am so upset right now I can't remember who or where.
God in heaven, You are the only one that can stop this destruction. We pray to You for rain to quench our parched land. Keep your children safe from harm. I thank you now for all my many blessings.
Amen and Amen
I am getting a lot of smoke and stink.
Fire north of US 69 between Leonard and Bailey.
Oh no.
Yeah, besides the health issues for people already vulnerable to bad air quality, the smoke is an indicator of fire. We had a teeny tiny one in our neighborhood last night (teeny tiny - people stomped it out once we found it). It was hard because there was already enough general smokiness that it took a while to identify that No, this is extra smoke right here. You don't want to use up the fire department resources for nothing, but you'd be pretty stupid to just stand there until something explodes into flame. And even after we called, it took a while of a bunch of people wandering through backyards in the dark to find the source, because you couldn't just follow the smoke smell.
Need rain.
So smoky today. Hard to breathe now. Looks like the FD made some headway in Bastrop last night - 30% contained.
Praying for those in the fire ravaged areas of the state. We have been lucky the last couple of months to be free of fires and our local FD's are sending some of our firefighting resources to help fight the fires. The central part of the state is in worse shape than West Texas.. unusual. I am a little nervous that they announced it in the news because of idiots .. now they know the main trucks are gone.. you never know what some may do!
Me, the kids have been evac for 4 days- along with 3 cats, 3 dogs an a horse, tonite the fire i closest, my Marine grandson has sent a link to listen to updates, but I am in Alabama now, and when i can- it will be my puter not my iphone I find the site, you guys dont lose your heads, if it will cost you life- leave. Seriously. NOTHING you have is worth that, and if you are dead, nothing you have is going to be taken care of as you will do that, take care of yourselves.
Praying for you, Kittriana, and all those in TX who have been affected by the fires. We can see the smoke to the north from my house in W. Houston. Can smell it, especially at night. If only it would rain, dadgummit...
Prayers for you and yours Kittriana and hoping things settle soon.
I've seen pine tree stumps burn underground for weeks, they blame this on the winds breathing in n out off the bay, I expect the majority of these fires will be arson, my prayers go to the very tired people fighting fires in this heat, they have my full respect. Found a website: Texas-fires that had news reports on the fires, wonder if the fires are caused, well, to keep law enforcement lookin the other way for some reason, Calif has issues with fires by their borders caused by illegals hiding out- has taken their lives being caught in those fires as well. Somebody start is a new thread this one is becoming the worldworm- Ouroboros, chuckl
