How hot is it?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It is raining in Arlington right now, not hard, but a nice gentle rain, thank God!!!

Trenton(close to), TX(Zone 8a)

It was a very light rain this morning. Not enough to close the micro cracks. Not even any mud.

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We've been watching most of the rest of the state get rain. One day we'll catch up!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm only a little over 20 or so miles from Josephine and what we had I would call very, very light drizzle. Didn't even get the sidewalks wet. Oh well, it didn't get as hot and there is some moisture in the air and that helps. Went to visit a family member today and drove about 15 miles south on 35E. Oh Lord. The scene everywhere will soon be changed. Huge mature trees are dead or dying. First strong wind will blow them over with the root ball still attached. What the heat didn't get a dry cold will. Flowers hunker down and they will mostly come back next year.......a tree takes years. Sadly, most of the dead trees are in yards of occupied homes. I don't think these people realize the consequences of not caring for the trees. Most of the grass just goes dormant and will rise again with a really good rain. Once a tree is dead, it is dead.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, that is true and very sad, I have seen quite a few Magnolia trees here in Arlington that look dead, such a pity, a magnolia takes a long time to to grow, and they are so beautiful, hard to believe that people would let them die.

Abilene, TX(Zone 7b)

Woke to rain Saturday morning! Officially over 3 inches; we got 2 solid at my house. High yesterday was 88 though the humidity was through the roof. Its funny how a little rain suddenly makes you feel normal, at least for a little while. Hoping adn praying that everyone else finally gets some decent rain SOON!

Frisco, TX(Zone 8a)

We saw some lightning and then heard a large thunderclap last night around 8pm...ran to the window to see what was going on...everything was south of us and we didn't get a drop, but it made us hopeful that maybe this weather pattern is breaking up just a touch.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

It's 104 here and kind cloudy/humid. There are small showers all around me but none on me. If I'm going to have to deal with the humidity I would really the rain to go with it!

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Lisa, did ya'll get anything? The man upstairs sneezed on us again, but otherwise, nothing that left a mark. :/

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I posted on the other weather related thread. We didn't get any rain at my place but it poured up on Hwy 29. Jess (my 16 yr old) and were eating dinner and it poured for 5-10 minutes. What was really strange was just a little ways down the Hwy it hadn't rained at all. The pavement was totally dry. The rain did cool it off some 87* (that's terrible to think 87 is cool) so that's nice. My son just got his permit, I thought I would be nervous, but it is nice to just sit there and look out the window. Lol He's going to drive me to HEB tomorrow, I guess I have chauffeur now.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I think there was rain north of I10 in Katy, but we didn't get any. However, it was cloudy and that was nice. :)

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Just thought Id mention it was 107 here yesterday. For a few days it has been around 102, that extra 5* makes a huge difference. All along I thought I was just getting used to the heat.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It was 107 here yesterday also, but only 105 today, what a relief!!!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Isnt it terrible that when they say its going to be 100* I feel like I need to brace for a cold front. lol This has to end sometime, right?

Trenton(close to), TX(Zone 8a)

Friday was 107.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

It is amazing that Odessa keeps being the 'Cool' part of the state. We have been just barely above 100.. maybe a little over but rarely those high numbers. It is because we are at the outer edge of that high pressure system that has made itself at home over Texas.. just moved right in, pulled up a chair, propped up its feet and parked is big fanny right over Texas!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Our predictions for the next 7 days have been the same for 2 months now, 105-106-107-105-106-107-107-106-105. Weather man says what is worse is that we have set a record now for overnight high temps. Should be in the upper 60's and it is staying in the upper 80's. I was up at 1AM this morning and it was 93. With lots of water even my Texas natives are burned. When I say "burned", I mean brown or black leaves as though a torch hit them. No let up in sight. Getting very depressing.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes it is very sad and depressing.

Arlington, TX

I keep finding dead plants, today it was a willow leaf aster. I think there might be one sprig with green but the rest turned brown and died in 3 days. Been a rough summer on wildlife and wildlife lovers alike. Someday I know it will rain once again and the temps will go down.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

We will have to make notes of the plants that actually survived this summer.
Now they will start water restrictions to 2 days a week beginning in September, so I hope by then the temps will have gone down some.
Our water bill for last month was 188 including sewer and garbage which is not too bad.
Let us hope and pray.
Josephine.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh goodness, Jo. Mine has been way over $300. for the last two months each. However, the wildlife in our yard is different and abundant. They are suffering and I like to think we are doing our best to provide some respite for them.

Abilene, TX(Zone 7b)

Day 67 of temps over 100 (previous record was 47). I think its the night time temps that are killing things. It just never cools off. They want us to quit watering by 10am, but it's coooler at noon than 9 at night. We are suppose to go to once a week watering by the end of Sept. Hope things have cooled off by then and gotten some rain.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

That's what's so strange. It's cooler in the morning then late at night.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

9pm sat the 20th of Aug. it thunder and now we are getting sprinkles
told DH to leave the mower and wagon out but he put the mower in the shed hope that doesn't stop the sprinkles.

Frisco, TX(Zone 8a)

On our news last night the weather person said that the high pressure dome is starting to move to the west slightly and may help bring the temps done to below100...
98 or 99 she said to be funny, but at least she said it would set up conditions to have at least a chance of some rain...at this point I'll take anything.

Arlington, TX

98 sounds pretty good to me and that is not a joke!

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

A couple of days ago, one of the weathermen said that the averge temps were starting to go down so hopefully we would get some relief soon. I guess someone forgot to tell the real weather since the temps are staying the same or going up. I'm sooooo ready for fall now.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

A sign on a church in a neighboring town says The devil called. He wants his weather back!

I say let him have it ~ 110° yesterday.

Day off today and I'm piled up in the a/c with my favorite gardening magazines and books.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Just came from a short trip across Dallas. The dead and dying trees are about to outnumber those that are still green. The green ones are wilted. Heard a remark somewhere that currently we are in the same "stream" as the Sahara Desert. The low humidity is creating a huge problem for the vegetation.

Talihina, OK

We are getting some light rain here In okieland started last evening and has been mostly very light rain since the first outburst even so it is over a 1/2" and ever so much cooler that is compared to 110°

Trenton(close to), TX(Zone 8a)

It is so hot and dry the leaves on my Bridal Wreath Spirea leaves are turning crispy. I don't remember that happening in the 15 years it has been planted. I turned the hose on it today for the first since it became well established about 13 years ago, as I remember.

Austin, TX

I was so excited this morning, Weather Channel had a headline for Austin "Severe Weather Warning". I thought it was going to be rain storms. Alas, the severe weather warning was for 108 temps this coming weekend -:(

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Fort Worth will be under water restrictions in a few days. Two day a week sprinklers, hand water anytime. Come on cooler weather.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Kirk-I heard the same thing. Then heard that we are going to be under another Heat Advisory until at least Sat. I was never aware that we werent under a heat advisory. LOL
Will Swiss Chard germinate in this heat?

Austin, TX

Today in Austin will mark the 69th day of 100+ degree weather, tying the record set in 1925. Looks like the record was meant to be shattered.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

We have been on twice a week since the first of July.. no other watering allowed at any time.. not even hand watering. My yard handled it for a few weeks.. looked OK but then started looking stressed and now is just about dead even with the watering. It can only take it for so long. My boxwoods are getting a lot of dead leaves in the center of the bushes now... I just noticed that in the last week. These are large well established 25 year old bushes. I soak the daylighs out of them the days I am allowed to water but the low humidity just sucks the life out of everything.

It has rained here twice in the past month.. once for about 10 minutes and the second time two weeks ago... I was not home but was told it was a good long 30 to 40 minute rain.

That is sad when your well established plantings fall prey. But this is not an ordinary year. We haven't got much more than that in rain fall, but in a larger city we have more reserve water and are the last to go on restrictions.

Trenton(close to), TX(Zone 8a)

Record for August 24 high temp reached 110 degrees before 3PM.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I just got back from outside, where a wind has kicked up and the temperature dropped almost 20 degrees to 88... while the sun is still up!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

That blew through here this afternoon. Winds nearing 60mph dropping dead trees and limbs on power lines and starting fires all over the county. The volunteer fire depts are running ragged and so far two homes have burned. It left 2 tenths of an inch of rain which didn't help the fires while the winds made some of the fires get out of hand quickly. Half the county lost electricity too.
It did lower the temp from 104° to 81° which was an underhanded blessing to the firemen.

This weather is getting weirder and weirder...

I am curious, do you know where the reserve water supply is coming from?
