:)
Garden Photos # 16
Love everyone's pretties!
Poor Red Spotted Purple Jen! They are one of my faves and I don't see them very often!
Allison I do start them inside, but a lot of the seedlings die during the hardening off period. The seedlings get stuck on their second first set of true leaves and don't do anything. :( I just planted 13 seedlings out around the mother plant they are only one set of leaves so hoping for the best! I would love a big patch of them!
that's a bummer Meredith.. hate those slow growers
maybe - let it bloom you have waited this long:)
I think that's a weed.. I have ones that look like that. They get tiny little flowers on them.
Bill that Bonsai is awesome! I absolutely love it. And how in the world do you make your cardinal flowers so happy!? I can barely keep mine alive never mind have them towering behind Rudbeckias.. Please tell me your secret :)
Amaranthus? Bill, very nice photos...the dogwood is wonderful....Jen, you're lucky Ruby Slippers came back....I think it's a short lived per.
Yeah actually there's a chance that is an Amaranthus. I have weeds that trick me into thinking they are Amaranthus too... I have lots of weeds here! lol
I have grown love lies bleeding and other Amaranthus before.. NONE have ever looked this healthy.. has to be a weed.. LOL and it's 3 foot tall already.. but I will wait and see.. doesn't seem to be affecting the salvia in the container with it.. whats the harm
I would leave it until I knew it was definitely a weed.. I always have weeds on watch ! Lol so far they've all turned out to be weeds :( But it does help me ID them better in the future.. Now I know what 90% of the weeds look like so I can pull them early.
not sure meredith on the cardinal flowers - they self seed here too - i have a bunch stop by and you can have some.
Nice pictures, Jen and Bill. I really want a Dawn Redwood. I need more room...
Thanks Bill! I just bought 3 plants a few weeks ago. I'm trying them in a different sunnier spot and I put that rich lobster compost in the soil where I planted them. Hopefully that will make them happy. I had some in a shady spot at the end of my butterfly garden and they only get about 2 ft high and I usually only get one flower stock per plant. I'm sure it's because my soil isn't rich or moist enough for them. I have to stick to drought tolerant plants unless I want them to be high maintenance. I really should add lots of compost every year.
Wow, Jo, gorgeous place! So much color. I'm gonna get in my Lear Jet tomorrow and fly over to the UAE. Better bring my coveralls and veil.....
Nice amaryllis, Marilyn!
Gorgeous pics, as usual, Celeste! Do you think any of us are going to be so critical of you not dead-heading? Please!!!!
Jen, nice shots of the hummer moth.
Allison, yes, weed, though I couldn't tell you what it is, really. I get them here. Maybe it's a species type amaranthus? I'm thinking maybe this?: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/77162/ Or something similar.
Bill, great shots of your place. I love the gold star dw. A must have!
Lobster compost, Meredith? Do they make that with ground up lobster shells? Must be really good stuff! I have started top dressing with aged cow manure as a mulch and fertilizer. The worms love it. If I keep adding more every year, I'll have some really rich soil.
