Alice, my heliconias are in the east bed under the big oak tree. They get filtered sun - really just glimpses - in the summer, because we've had the tree thinned. Mine have been killed right back the last two winters but have come back with new shoots in the spring each year. I think they bloom on 'mature' growth so in the years when we had mild winters mine bloomed earlier, on the previous fall's shoots. My Lobster Claw helis are showing no sign of blooming even yet and they are in more sun than the smaller orange ones.
