Best/Worse/What did I Learn today-chat with friends!
Katie so glad you joined us! You live in Mulege, I was there in 1994 for a full 6 days!! I loved it there!!!
JUDY!!! Hi Sweetie!! Dave's not working and it's getting close so I'm going to say I'm not going to be able to make it to the reunion, and I'm very very very upset and yes I would bring my deli dude if he would come with me. He's in Tacoma for a family reunion so if this is going to still happen it will probably be next week before I talk to him, but let me tell ya I am NOT texting him, he's going to have to text me.
Grrrr typed for 10 minutes, hit something and cyberspace..be back in a bit
Evening all,
spent the day in Peterborough, lovely town, been decades since I've been and didn't remember it being so big...took back roads home, Friday afternoon traffic heavy on main Cottage routes , so a leisurely ride was nice..Got to say driving through towns and farmland made me want to cry, burnt lawns and farmers fields ,either burnt or stunted crops, we'll pay heavily at the stores for veggies this winter. Did pick up 3 dozen corn, some for me, Cathy and her family and Greg/Melanie..cooking some up now, I love cold corn so although I'm on my own there will be plenty for snacks.
Think I'll take a ride to Home Depot tomorrow, last weekend for their garden center, will see what goodies they have left.Hot here agan, although a water ban is in effect I watered the planters..no rain in sight till mid week.With going to
the Elvis gospel breakfast in Collingwood Sunday morning Ann is worried it will be hot and humid.. Told her under a tent so all will be well but the afternoon events are outdoors and no shade..if we make it till evening it's inside arena so heat might not be a problem unless no air! If it's too hot can always leave.Poor Sailor is not liking this weather nor are the kitties but got to say those Mosquitos are getting as large as humming birds!

Neighbor walking down the drive, be back to respond to your posts, hopefully before the night shift starts, tired...got to run
Bernice sent Cliff over with desert then off he went.
Just before my post mom called, in good spirits but concerned about Rocky her dog..you remember that only months ago she spent $6,000
For a new type of cancer proceedure with another $1,200 3 additional times for an injection to be somehow blown I to his body as part of the treatment..well he had it done a few weeks ago, this week she called to say he was limping and concerned, went to the vets and they put a needle in and only drew blood..called Jim to say the checked it and didn't believe it to be cancer, so the $1,200 and needle/check yo was a bit more than $1,700. Drove to the cottage and called her saying maybe to make sure a biopsy would be in order, another large bill..I DO KNOW she, we love our animals but I personally think at Rocky's age they are doing him a disservice...I'm thinking this vet is taking advantage of them..same with her other dog they did eye surgery, removed eye, thousands of collards and months later had to put the pooch down..it's not the money I don't like her spending it just that one can only do so much Nd she has gone that far..my step dad Jim has no qualms about spending that kind of money on Rocky, two of a kind..Debbie she wants to travel to your neck of the woods!
Laura just loved the photo's of hubby playing with the kids..heartwarming to see memories being made.
Judy, glad you've been able to put your hard earned dollars into the household..I'm sure you'll get it back twofold seeing as you've so much planned when Liz and Kenny arrive.
Crissy, I get such a kick out of listening to you banter between Dave's antics and the deli man's!
Barb, your goal was to take it easy today, did you manage to do so?
Debbie, know you had to behave as you had no wheels. One way to have you rest.
Dianne, hoping you and Warren got answers yesterday. If this heat spell would break it might help you sleep better..know you get but winks.
Katie, hope you'll join us and no longer lurk...we are all talking about extreme heat, how is the weather in your area?
See that Sailor has started itching again so best I go find the benedryl
Tired, might try to call it a night.
Hello to All ! Good Evening Night Shift !
Welcome Katie! Please join in ... the water is fine !... Well a bit hot for a pool party.... Barb thanks for your concern I am actually more concerned for you all..
we are 'used' to it... and somehow we've had rainshowers this week...so somewhat cooling things down from time to time...
Judy - this will be Jake's senior year? or no.. junior?
Hope Debbie has gotten some rest and relaxation and fun times with the baby....
Crissy - Maybe some time away is just 'what the DR. ordered..."....
LK - only one of our 3 'test' cassia cuttings is still alive... but it's hanging in there. I check on it every day....thinking of you !
So glad Brother got help... the fact that he was willing to get help is Step One and the most important step of all...
Laura - love the water gun battle... just the thing to cool everyone off.
It has been a tough week at work... TGIF ! Tahoe broke down on the way home (on the interstate ! Scary !)... but got back running again..hubs drove to meet me... he thinks it is the tranny... so Barb... I might be a bit closer to my Toyota Highlander....
So no plans tomorrow but relax and catch up on housework....I'll pop back in a bit.... My yellow hibby finally bloomed today !
Hugs
Mary
Our temperatures are a little lower than usual - low 90's. Humidity is high and today we have cloud cover which is unusual. I think it's courtesy of hurricane Dora whom we are watching closely.
I discovered that a mango tree which I planted froom seed when I first moved in here about seven years ago has its first almost ripe fruit on it. I also have a Hawiian-type papaya tree which is ripening its second fruit. I have a lot of citrus trees so I have lots of fruit for most of the winter but getting year-round food is a challange.
Not much happening here. Most Americans have gone north for the summer - where many of them are now hotter than they would be here.
It's very quiet and life is good.
katie
Katie - that sounds wonderful! I wonder what zone you are in... we are 8B in Louisiana... I love tropicals but they present a challenge to me as our winters have been colder as of late....
We have an orange tree/satsuma tree... they are loaded but shouldn't be ripe until much later.
These ladies on here are family to me... and don't know what I'd do without them ! I have DH and 3 'teens' DS19, DSD18 and DSD17.
Tell us about yourself ! You will love reading and writing on Betty's Blog... lots of sharing and caring ....
Mary
Hi Katie, glad you decided to pop in
LK (((((((((((BIG HUGS)))))))))))))))))) hope SIL is doing ok
Betty, does your mom want to adopt me??? yikes!! that's crazy money to spend on a dog!! now please don't take that wrong...I love furries, but that is crazy!!!
hmmm home depot?? some one posted somewhere, that they have "reject paints" did not realize that...will have to check it out,....DH used to be a truck driver, luckily was home almost every night......but on one of his overnight runs......kids and I painted the living room while he was away!!! he was very surprised!!!!
he is going to visit his brothers, next week....wonder what I should paint??? LOL
nah...think I will try to finish a quilt for him....remember the one with the leaves?? swap blocks...top is done just needs quilting..
that reminds me spoke to the sailor tonight ^_^ he wants me to send him his quilt, he does not like the blankets at all, sew I have to do a little more quilting on that and get it off to him...
I got a box in the mail today with some great fabrics in it. will be very good for the Christmas / winter swap blocks....sew I can get going on them too......good thing I have lots to keep me busy....gonna be lonely without the DH here for awhile..well I am gonna go search for some quilt block designs.....g'night
Night shift is on, hmm maybe early morning shift as I look at the time.tummy a little off, don't get excited, just realize I cooked corn set it to cool and didn't eat anything last night. Wonder what corn tastes like at 2:00am in the morning?
Mary, transmission is a major component, mega $$$ for repair, what year is your vehicle and do you have a lot of miles on it? couldn't have been something more economical like a starter or something. Is it what you were taking for this weekend's trip? Now what shall you do? Seems you already have a vehicle in mind! Mary what is a satsuma tree, does it bear fruit! Photo of yello hubby please
Katie, let's hope Dora takes an alternate route, must nerve racking not knowing if you'll be hit! Can't imagine how wonderful it must be to simply walk outside and help yourself to fruit. I was at Thunders at Christmas and was in awe of her fruit orchards, thanks to her youngest, left with bags of oranges and grape fruit!
Katie, do you live in a tourist area? Closest I've come to visiting Mexico is when at padre islands I drove to the border and crossed over to I think was matamore ?? Hmmm have to check the map??
LindaKay, did your dr's appointment go ok? Grandchildren with you? Let's hope weather cools a bit so they can be outside. Any news on you brother..do you think he can take calls ?
Thunder, can they have personal items like blankets with them? Must make you feel proud he wants his quilt! A box of fabric, oh happy days..remember you have the 12 month of Christmas panel quilt to get at. As for Rocky I'm much in the same mindset! What gets me is that if any of us children needed help it would need a hard sell to get it! They've done this for every dog they've had..
Just read jeff's Bllog .. it's his 8th day today, nice to see him so relaxed.
Drats, LindaKay, are you finding the iPad is touchy and you have to read everything you type as it's created it's own wording? Wonder if you can shut it off, must check with Apple
Probably darn good Betty!!
Oh Mary maybe a new vehicle - whooo hooo! Glad you weren't stuck on the freeway in this heat for a long period of time.
Laura is it this weekend it is Halloween at your camping area ? I used to do a show in Buckhorn Ontario and we rented a cabin that was on the water in a trailer park. Thanksgiving weekend the owners always had a Trick or Treat night - I loved it as where I live it is too remote for kids to come a knocking.
~~~~~~ to everybody. Just noticed the time - I had better mosey on into the bedroom or it will be time for me to get up.
Hope the corn was good Betty!
Dianne
Katie so glad you are not lurking and decide to chat with us.
Mary a Yellow hibby to cool. Do you grow from seed?
Dianne not this weekend we go Oct 8 and 9 and do the fall festival in a town called Thurmont Md. Tons of crafts and food we stumbled acroos it last year.
B-day part for GS today making taco dip and onion dip so better get started.
To all have a great weekend and stay cool.
Dianne, see we had the same sleeping pattern last night..decided I'd not add corn to the midnight menu so opted for jam sandwich!
Halloween I see parents driving their children into town as concessions are poor pickins..such a fun time for kids. Now that all the grandchildren are older I'll miss (or will I) making all those costumes. Last year I was down to 2 and likely none or 1 this year. All I can say is the had some pretty snazzy costumes to go out trick or treating. For those of us with no young ones, perhaps we should take a neighbors child under wing, sad when no more babies!
Dianne when we were first married we would rent on Rice Lake/bobcageon areas..great memories of those times.
Laura, guess you have to book early to be guaranteed a spot. Would that be your last outing with the camper or would you head south and still enjoy?
Ohhhh your birthday special sounds yummy..having a party?
Just came in from the gardens, did a bunch of weeding, humidity sure helps weeds grow, makes it easier to pull I guess. I should go back out and cut down all the spent flowers, count I'd get a second crop but worth a try. Barb, you'll have to imagine where the pretties are on your visit.
Are all your flowers girls all but finished??
Not sure about the weather, almost think the humidity and heat wave might have broke, NOT that it's not hot but just not the extreme of the week.
Trying to figure out what to do this morning..can't believe how much my hair has grown since the perm, am thinking of trying to get appointment for a wash/cut/set this morning. So much I could do outside but feel lazy this morning.
Bev, how fantastic that the cath worked well..you are home now and I'm hoping won't be in the gardens working for a bit. They did not keep you long? Amazing what can be done! Think with your being under so much stress re Scotty it was difficult for you to give up smoking, perhaps you can try again and be successful, not often one gets a second chance. Just think, for every couple packages of cigarettes you get $$$ for a lily!
Gorgeous!! Now you should be putting all your cig money into an account to meet up with us at my place next year..that ought to give you an incentive...walking the garden this morning I saw a lily amongst the growth, will have to take a photo..can't get on my downstairs computer because it is still saying ..no video input. Drats/more drats
I still have some daylilies blooming and my hibsicus is still going, along with my salvia's will bloom all summer.
Bev I'm so glad the heart cath went well, YAY that artery has cleared to 40%! Nice lily!
It's been a long time since I've been in Baja, remember in my early 20's driving with a group of friends 12 hours down to the border to go into Tijuana to party.
Katie I'm so glad you decided to join us! I'm from Modesto, CA and didn't move here to Arkansas until April 2007.
Well I'm going to an Arkansas luncheon so I better hop into the shower. I'll see y'all later!!
We got a little rain (drizzle might be a better word) last night. It's still overcast. Dora is still heading north, way west of us and much weaker than she was yesterday. We're hoping for rain. After many years of now serious hurricanes wehad a run of four in five years, one of them the worst in our history. One hit the day after I moved in here - and I had no roofs!!
However when Tony, my friend who works for me, was putting the tin roofs on I told him not to try to save money on fasteners. The roof hhas held perfectly - even through the worst one in our history. I have done some disasterrelief work and have seen pictures from the flooding fifty years ago (very bad) so I bought on a hill well above the flood plane. I'm in a small neighborhood, sort of a suburb, with a mixed population.
I am not big on socializing. I spend a lot of time working with my plants. I am trying to increase the number of food plants that are grown locally. I have Mexican friends who farm and I've given away lots of plants. I get along best with the local people who work hard and don't waste time on gossip, drinking, drugs, etc. Tony has worked for off and on for fourteen years and we are very good friends. His wife and three children are also friends. Tony and I have always gotten along well and because he is known and liked in the community his appreciation of me has helped in my gaining acceptance here.
I'm recovering from some emotional trauma, mainly to do with my family of origin. It's been quite a wh le but you know how we have a way of keeping these things alive until they aren't anymore? Wel.. this week has been really good for me as I realized some of the old demons are gone - or at least sleeping.
I don't mean to sound mysterious but I'm still not ready to write about a lot of my history. Most of it's pretty boring anyway.
We're still hoping Dora will bring us more rain. After four hurricanes in five years we're kind of blase about them. My house is up and as secure as we can make it. Now I might get some rain under doors but the major problems have been handled (like the kitchen flooding).
I've know Betty for quite a while and am looking forward to getting to know the rest of you.
Thanks for making me feel so welcome.
katie
Morning everyone!
Welcome Katie. Would love to see pictures of your gardens if you have the chance?
It rained last night, and it feels so good! The humidity is at 95% this morning, but the temp is still only 77 right now, so I can't complain, The grandson's were out running in the rain last night, it was so fun to watch them. Then we had a pretty, almost night time rainbow, and that was pretty.
Betty, yes, I find that if I don't proof read what I type on the Ipad, it will create words for you, and sometimes they can be not so nice words.
Back from town and the heat is mounting once again buuutttt I got motivated just seeing one little thing on town, got to laugh, doesn't take me much to get excited..1st,I bought a new monitor cord, nope, that is not the problem, next step is checking the monitor, not old, remember Dannie bought it for me Christmas eve?? But, things go wrong even with new computers. If not that then guess it's off to be repaired..not a good time to go down seeing as Suzanne is on vacation this week and then the two weeks after Paul is off and I likely could have worked from home, no computer with my programs on it, no staying at home..drats just not good...my computer genius is out kayaking gor yet a few more weeks, hate to call with an SOS but might have to try!
So now dor my 'oooh/' moment,
I spent quite a bit of $$$ on a reservoir for my last pond, with trying to come up, once the shrubs are able to be moved, with water flowing from main pond to the new pond I thought rather than have a water spray I'd convert to a large waterfall...long winded aren't I, but I'll get there lol
Trying to get ideas which were more cost effective I went on line to check out diy water falls..saw a man put together a mini waterfall reservoir using a plastic type office file..drilled side hole and attached the hose...although a wonderful idea much much too small for the big pond..
This morning while walking the side aisles in Walmart did't they have the perfect thing, giant size tub with lower lip..if it's still wide enough a second one can be used...sure wish I had brought the size of the hose with me, not a problem, just means another trip to town
Been losing posts so pressing send
Now my large pond was made by my makind trip upon trip along roadways, not really what I wanted but lordy I wanted a pond and it would have to do..so now that I'm almost a pro after making the last waterfall I'm ready to tackle the big waterfall!
Last week when I went to the quarry my young lad who has been giving me good deals was not there so left with a few slabs of rock, triple the price. This morning my young man was there, oh happy days, we went through slabs of rock finding the biggest that I can handle re lifting and stll achieve a waterfall look..
So home I am, thrilled to bits..trying to decide where to start, guess it should be back to town for water connectors, then start emptying the pond so I can climb in and do rock placement...
Will take photo's of the now and later so you can see the progression..won't show you the large slabs of rock though as I'm sure you'll be giving me the what for. Lol
Crissy, what is an Arkansas luncheon?? Kind of Victorian tea?? Never plant annuals except in baskets, perhaps I should to get the red I'm looking for in the gardens..enjoy lunch!
Katie, the day you moved in? You must have thought it not to be a good omen. There is no need to feel you must provide us with personal info..we are thrilled you've joined is, many are away this weekend and will be back to welcome you.
Think that is why many of us have bonded so, lots going through various emotional difficulties and know that anytime we/they need a friend we are only as close as the keyboard.
Nice to have a good friend you can share your gardening expertise with. What kind of food plants are you planting? If you've any garden photo's as LindaKay mentioned we'd sure like to see them
Linda Kay is that a rainbow I see in the dark? What are the children doing today?
Well I've been sitting for a bit and if I don't get a move on I'll end up doing nothing
Betty be careful in this heat.
Lk love the rainbow. How old are the grands?
Katie sounds like you have made a wonderful home and made some great friends.
Off and running......
Betty some of the campgrounds you need to make a reservation 1 yr in advance all depends where you are going.
Forgot to mention that the house I moved from was complely under water so I raised my eyes to heaven and said Thank you - over and over. kb
Betty I know you posted it but I'll be darned I cannot find the link to your son's misadventures. Can you post it here again please? I so loved reading about his adventures. Thanks!
Hello To All !
Well I got out for a little while.. mainly re-potting things. I hope I did right. My understanding is plants like to move up gradually... Thunder how cool that DS wants Mama's quilt... soon you'll be making them for the whole troops... LOL... Betty- I need a rock boy like yours LOL ! Can't wait to see the pond pics... our new sugar kettle in front is coming out nicely... many thanks to Elf for pond plants. Yes - if it's the tranny... I may not repair. We've known we're on borrowed time with this vehicle 200,000 + miles and 2002.... so I've been able to sock away some $ for the next vehicle.
Satsuma is a type of orange/tangerine... My Grandpa made a living in Florida growing them ... they are yummy and fond memories for me.... we just have one... Yellow hibby has closed up but another coming along so will get a pic then... I do have a "Bon Temps" Cajun hibby TODAY which is gorgeous and I will post...
Laura - the regular yellow was one of my original hibbys boughtin a pot... I've been trying to take cuttings though... never grown one from seed. Taco Dip recipe please ! DS makes a Tamale dip... mash up a can of tamales, rotel and mexican velveeta... yum. The camping trip sounds fun... can't wait to see the ghost pics...
Bev - YAY! So glad everything is going well... I think about you everytime I see a Daylily....
Katie - how neat to grow food for yourself and the area.... We just have a few veggies... I'm a beginner gardener so still learning but my cucumbers did real well. Zucchini looks gorgeous but only ONE picked so far... Hmmm??? Love to share plants too.. I put some more in pots today but need to find out if a swap will be happening soon...
LK - that rainbow is beautiful... how fun with the GK's... glad they are visiting you for a while....
Hang on I'll get that Bon Temps pic for you gals.... ((HUGS))
Mary
That was a quick run into town, had already put the pond hose to empty, drove into town and no sooner getting out of the car did I remember I should have unplugged..thank goodness for neighbors, gave Bernice a call and Cliff came to the rescue, came over and unplugged it.
Talk about a two ring circus, me knowing what I want to make (in this scatter brain of mine) and a HD worker who thinks he has better ideas not knowing what I want to do, so a bag full of plumbing parts came home with me..let's see if I can be a McGuiver.
Katie, omg what a Godsend..with all the flooding I often wonder why people purchase homes that are in flood zones?
Dianne, here is the sight..if you go to the side it shows his and Julie's daily postings...seems like they are enjoying your neck of the woods...you probably recognize some of the areas they post about..
http://2011summertrip.blogspot.com/
Mary, with all the traveling you've been doing of late you don't want to be driving something that is not dependable..please tell me 200,000 is a lot, my car is a 2007 or 2008?? And I'm at 148,000 kl
Why is it when you just finish paying for it, it dies!! Think they have it programmer to do so.
Look forward to seeing your photo Mary.
Well, hungry, tomato sandwich, glass of lemonade, a change into grubby clothes so I can hop in the pond and by then the heat of the day should be over and I can do a few hours work..bought a steak to bbq tonight, live high on the hog. Lol
Mary that's gorgeous, look at the color combination..does the plant have continual blooms now that it in flower?
well most of my hibiscus are dropping many blooms in this heat. But this one has bloomed 2-3 times now... isn't it pretty ! My Rum Runner has continual blooms but it is my most successful hibby... it's as tall as me ! I've posted pics before....
Actually with this vehicle... if I do need a new one... I can probably say I got the last pennies worth... not many cars you can say that about... Im sure... this one has lasted longer than any I've had... and 210000 miles is a lot of miles...I bought it new July 2002...a month before we got married... so could transport the family to Disney for the wedding LOL....
We have hubs truck for next weekend so Definitely won't have to cancel that.... Thank goodness !
Hm... worried about our friend in Oslo, Norway... some of you may remember DS dated... took her to Prom, friends with the girls too.... she hasn't responded back on FB... so will email her... Terrible shooting in Norway...
((HUGS)) be back in a bit...
Mary
That hib is beautiful. I have one that is rose pink and blooms almost constantly. I've planted others but none have survive. The one I have sometimes gets whit3e moldy stuff on it but it keeps blooming. I call my place "Darwin's Garden."
As to why people build in flood plains - that's a good question. It had been fifty years since the last really bad flood since our series of four in five years hit. There are pictures of the fifties flood posted in our local laundromat. In spite of knowing it has happened, people think it won't happen again or it won't happen to them. One reason I moved when I did was that I know these things tend to ahppen every fifty years or so and we were overdue. I didn't mean to plan it quite so close but I made it out.
My plant of the moment is lippia. I got the seeds from JLHudson.net, one of my favorites. It is supposed to be sweet like stevia but more heat tolerant. It looks like two of the seeds have germinated. I may sprinkle a few more in the starting pot. Another new one this year is goldenberry which is either a nozcvious weed or a superfood depending on where you are reading.
I've had some success with malabar spinach. I've lots of dragonfruit plants growing well but no fruit yet. Three flowers ths year. I've little cherimoya trees and some little pomegranate trees started from seeds the birds missed. I had a bunch of macadamia nut trees and I gave a lot of them away. All of mine died but I'll probably try them again someday.
Must get back to work.
katie
Hey Katie, I have never tried and veggies or fruit trees here. Other than a peach tree, ut it does about 5 years ago.
Having lots of fun with the boy's. We had an adventure going to wal mart. Been awhile since I took kids shopping, and try to get them to make a decision for cereal or fruit... But were finally back home, and all are happy.
Amazing, all of what you grow I'm not familiar with Katie! I find it interesting and love learning about different gardening crops wether fruit/veggie and flowers.pomegranate, fruit are quite large aren't they?
I've a few fruit trees planted but doubt I'll ever see fruit. That being said my crabapple tree is heavy with crabapples.
How long will the kids be with you LindaKay..
Eyes are heavy, might sit/nap for a bit
So much for nap, Ann dropped in for a visit, oooh driving a new 2011 vehicle, made plans of what we need to take with us tomorrow and off she went! Early morning departure. 7pm..must go charge my camera
Then Jeff just called, said traveling the Rideau has been enjoyable, restful but would not do the Rideau again. Ohh, had the opportunity to ask him what was wrong with my computer, gave me some ideas so we'll see if I can fix it.
Went out to check the pond, decided I don't want falls, like the heavier sound of water feature so now it's up to my shoulders changing switch to get water spray, oh well, kept me entertained this aft. Lol
Should do it nown then find my sunglasses, folding chair, maybe pack some juices so that come morning I'll be ready.
Ohh looked at weather forecast, calling for rain, thunderstorms almost every day next week..sure will help farmers and me!
Betty, hope you can get your co outer fixed. Sounds like you need a new video card?
I will have the boys till next week Tuesday.
LindaKay, did what jeff said to do and I'm ok..oh happy days!!
Tomorrow I'll be rich. Lol
Returns
Walmart - computer plud/one i haveworks
Walmart-bin I was going to do waterfalls, changed my mind
Home Depot-all plumbing supplies I needed for today's project/ changed my mind
Best thing of the day, got pond all cleaned up..oooh you should see how many baby frogs I have
Debbie, you will be proud of me, saw my 3 fishes, I must be feeding them well because they've doubled in size!!
LindaKay, bet the boys are enjoying the pool..sure takes up a lot of your time, not much snoozing for you!
