Is it too early for Canadian Geese to migrate south- bound? Over cast sky in early morning hours. But the calling was unmistakingly belong to geese.
Daily Bird Pics #408
Thanks Red, the Cassin's Finches, especially the male. He almost wear a crest there! It's a shame that the bird trails was cancelled due to danger of fires. Hope you will get a chance (to go to the event) before soon.
That is interesting, Resin. Cornell's online guide 'All About Birds' does not include the Woodhouse's Scrub Jay and neither does the reporting form on eBird. What's up with that?
Hi Red,
It's split by IOC: http://www.worldbirdnames.org/n-vireos.html (scroll down just over half way)
Resin
Love that Yellow Warbler! I don't get to see them often. I saw a yellowish warbler yesterday I've yet to identify. Went down to a little village of a couple of hundred residents yesterday that has some good bosque habitat along a creek. Galisteo, NM. Several western movies have been filmed there--The Cowboys, Silverado, Young Guns, Crazy Heart.
Saw this tree full of Turkey Vultures when we arrived.
Forgive me if sometimes I share a pic that is not a bird. This row of hand-painted mail boxes is the post office in Galisteo. The colors just caught my eye. Apparently you're nobody here if your mail box isn't painted. Artists Fritz Scholder and Agnes Martin have lived here, also playwright Bernard Pomerance.
This is a good birding spot when NM is dry as now, especially if your locked out of all the USFS land. Galisteo Creek flows all year from the Sangre de Cristos near Santa Fe west to the Rio Grande. There is a wooden bridge across from the church and you can park underneath. Great bosque habitat and a trail runs both ways along the creek.

Lovely photos guys! Nice to see that Yellow Warbler there burn!!
WOW! Beautiful photos! Just love everyone's oriole's! Nanny, really pretty ones. Duc, love the action shot with the pretty flowers. Burn, you're killin' me with all those lovely finches! Red, great pics of awesome birds. I would love to see an ash-throated flycatcher!
Well, I'm too busy to play, so of course, I'm playing! Thought I'd share this one from this afternoon. Looked at the thermometer behind him after taking this shot and it read 100 degrees. He was hot and he's got the whole teenage angst thing goin' on.
LOL...good one!! Where have you been girl??
Been crazy busy or maybe just crazy. Plan to be back with a bang in about a week or so! I'm dying to go birding!
Nice having you back Elphy.
That is a cute little oriole, duc. Late summer is the time cardinals molt and bird boards are swamped with inquiries about what is wrong with the cardinals in my yard. :-)
I wrestled with myself for a few days on this bird's ID, going back and forth between a Hammond's or Cordilleran Flycatcher. I first leaned toward Hammond's then toward Cordilleran. Put the bird on the ID forum and resin leans toward Cordilleran, although not 100% sure. This morning, I finally recorded the pair of these birds as Cordillerans on eBird. Either is a life bird for me.
Pic was taken above the town of Red River, NM along the road that follows Red River where the pavement ends. Elevation was 9,000 feet or more There is a wooden bridge and there were lots of insects hatching. This pair was feasting on them. I would have gotten more pics, but right after I saw this pair, two couples with more kids than the law should allow came hiking up the river, shouting, throwing rocks in the water and the flycatchers flew up the mountain.
OT
...two couples wit more kids than the law should allow ....
Okay back on birding. That DE Junco is one attractive bird. I'm so glad you get to enjoy your trip out in Santa Fe. Duc, love those pics. from Ca. The HOSP is hilarious!
LOL....I think I know exactly how you feel red regarding those children!! And I agree with Lily there ...beautiful Junco! I just had Red-winged Blackbird at the feeder...but I didn't have to camera up and ready to go!
This is daddy Pileated Woodpecker when he came with a juvie the other day. The juvie never would come around to my side of the tree good enough to get a shot! Also shows how hot he was with open beak.
Elphaba, glad to see you. I love your hot cardinal-poor baby is adorable. Hope it cools down for you soon.
Red, that junco is most interesting. I wonder if it's an integrade (hybrid) between the oregon with the brown back and the slate-colored with the darker gray under the wing.
Nanny, I'm drooling over your great photo of dad pileated. You are soooo lucky to see the little one too.
I have a large amount of juvenile scrub jays and this is one of them.
Wonderful pictures folks.
Duc, that birdie needs a bath. Did you share your lunch with the older juvie?
Duc, That Tree Swallow baby in the nest is adorable!
Nanny, So good to see your Pileated!
Great shots everyone!
Red, congrats on the lifer flycatcher. That's a beautiful picture of him too. Totally with you about the children. Don't really get why boys have to throw rocks and pick up sticks and beat them against trees, bushes, rocks -- and girls have to squeal at everything. I just remind myself that it's good that they are learning to appreciate nature. Maybe they won't grow up to destroy it.
Duc, stunning pics like always! Love that baby swallow.
Nanny, nice one of the pileated. Must be great having juvi pileateds around!
I agree, very unusual to see a WP on the HB feeder, Teddy, great capture.
Love the peeking out Tree Swallow. And your so fortunate to have their company, during lunch Duc .I'm sure you dirty little one, will be happy for a bath.
Lily, so nice, that the Heron feel safe to stick around.
Wow nice Flycatcher, Red.
Nanny, you should send that Pileated my way, so I can get a few shots of it. ;)
lol Elphaba, I do feel sorry for your poor teenage Cardinal. 100 degrees is hard to bare.
Canada Geese on a pond.
Reddirtretiree,
Those families must not be into birding. We have four boys and they are all boy, but when we are on our bird walks, we are trying to teach them to leave everything as is (like, not throwing rocks) and to be quiet as so we can see and hear the birds better. Any other time is fine for their roughing about. Outside that is. I am trying to teach inside versus outside behaviour for my sanity's sake. :)
This heat has put the birds into hibernation or something. My, the activity has been non-existent but for grackles and mourning doves. The doves I enjoy, the grackles I threw corn for way far from the house, hoping they will find it.
We did get a pretty good look at one of our nearby Great Blue Herons the other day. Trying to keep cool, it didn't fly off as quick as usual, so my husband got a picture.
