New Bees Chat - Friends old and new, come on in! 7-11-11

Hornell, NY(Zone 5a)

It's been cooler here, Fall is definately in the air. We usually don't get frost until first or second week of October. Our fall flowers are coming in nicely. We have asters, dahlias, among others too numberous. These are the Heavenly Blue morning glories sent to me by Mekos last spring, I have a whole wall full of them on my back fenceline. The flowers are huge about 5" across.

Have a great day!

Very pretty Al!
It has been chilly but pleasant here the last few days too. Have set out a few crape myrtles and lots of Coral Bells and Hosta and such. Working on closing the nursery by the end of the month. Kinda sad but heck, we tried! There have been a lot of thefts there in the last month. They cut my fence the other night and loaded up on fruit trees. Disgusted about it really but we live in a small community so ? we'll see.
Going to go make the kids some tacos before they get home and put some coleus cuttings in dirt. See you all later and hugs for everyone!

Charlie's going for another ride with us, this time to South Jersey Shore and Cape May NJ. We'll be over there for a week or so, just barefootin' the beach and touring lighthouses along the eastern shoreline. Back in about a week or so.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Mechelle.......do you have any rooting hormone, or are going to be getting any? I could use a half bag whenever you have some. Are you going too keep your license or whatever so that you can still order nursery type stuff? I'm really sorry to hear you are closing up, and the creeps that broke in and stole from you !!!!!!!!!!!!!! That just sucks! I know how excited your were last year. But you gave it a good shot!

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Poor Girl. Hope you don't give up entirely....

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Hey Crit , I do have root hormone. Its not in individual packaging but I have it in large tubs. Wouldn't be a problem to send you some. I do plan to keep doing what I can here at home. Raining cats n dogs here today. We need it so much. Have a good day everyone!

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Mechelle..........That would be terrific. I got some in a sandwich baggie and it was about 1/4 to 1/3 full. I don't remember for sure. If I could get a baggie full from you, that would be sweet! Let me know.

Can't believe you girls haven't talked about me for a whole week...

Okay, here we are in beautiful downtown Cape May NJ. We had a small effeciency room with a kitchenette right off from Ocean Street. Most of the houses are huge Victorians built in mid 1800's, lots of Bed & Breakfast type inns along the shoreline. This is about as close to the Atlantic Ocean as you can get, right across the street from here.

We had a nice pebble beach in front, a little chilly to swim for us but a few brave souls were out there. The Atlantic coast was a defense line during WWII, our Navy actually captured a German U-boat right off the shoreline. The Cape May airport was once a training center for naval pilots before they shipped out on aircraft carriers during the war. The Coast Guard is still very active here.

We were searching for "Cape May diamonds", which are actually quartz crystals found in the beach sand. They are everywhere and sparkle brightly in the sun on nice days.

Here's Charley checking out the controls of the C130 Stormwatcher used by the Coast Guard to research hurricanes and also used for special beach patrols during emergencies. We were able to take flight lessons on the taxiway of the flight museum for this neat plane.

Al, the houses in that first pic are gorgeous! I love old Victorian houses, and the ones that have the widow's walks around the ocean.

Charley looks to be having a great time!!!! lol

Love the lighthouse Al. Thanks!

Found these little aster type flowers along the sandy beach near the lighthouse. They appear big in the photo, but are only about quarter size. It's amazing anything grows in these salty marshes.

We saw a lot of these wild sunflowers in bloom along the coast, too. It's a tall bushy plant, flowers about 3" across.

Great Pictures Al and good history lesson there too! I especially love the lighthouse pic. I have my downstairs hall bathroom decorated in a lighthouse theme. I would love to go to Cape Cod. Putting that on my mental bucket list :-)
Been such nice weather here. Warm with a cool breeze. All the critters love it outside when it's nice out like this.Have a good day everyone!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hi everyone! Great pictures Al! Love the lighthouse!

I think your flower is called a New England Aster or something similar... They grow wild all over in Maine too, in the middle of nowhere! They are pretty but likely considered weeds by those that have htem growing in their yards - lol. Charley looks like he's having a blast!

Happy Belated Birthday Charleen :-) Hope you had a fabulous day! Hugs!

Check out this little guy I came across a little bit ago. I have it on the Bug ID. I covered it and ran for my camera and it stood still for me while I played with the camera settings and let me take 29 pictures. I only ended up with about 6 good ones but you can't tell from the naked eye that those are it's offspring covering it's back. I'll let you know when I find out what it is and if and when the funeral will take place! HAHA

Thank you Mechelle. That is a lot of spiders you have there.

Philadelphia, PA

Thats a cool looking spider Mechelle.
Great photo ! Save that for the photo contest this year

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

I had to get within an inch or two to get that good of a shot. For some reason the zoom on my new camera makes the picture come out blurry. I wish the bug expert would tell me what it is so I would know if its good or bad! Has to be at least 200 babies on its back.

Booneville, AR

rrm happy birthday love and hugs nettie

Booneville, AR

i don,t think those spiders are bad i sure don;t need one in my house. they were always hangeing around in those ole buildings i worked in but that was all they did.nettie

Its a wolf spider. Here's some interesting facts about them.

1. They have 8 eyes. 2 on top, 4 across the center and 2 low.
2. They are hunting spiders therefore they don't spin webs.
3. The female attaches the eggs to her stomach. When they are ready to hatch she breaks open the sack and they crawl on to her back where she carries them for a week.
4. There are many different species of wolf spiders.
5 . They are one of the only spiders that carry their babies on their back.
I thought that was interesting and thought I'd share itwith you guys. Nite Everyone
