Today, I am thankful for...#6

mulege, Mexico

Today I am thankful for Tony's wife Fely who stopped by for a visit and told me several times how much everyone in the family likes me. We've had some problems in the past and I am glad to feel that they are behind us. It was good timing as I was able to show her the mango on the tree that she and I had planted together shortly after I moved in here. Her parents lost their house in the hurricane two years ago and are now on a rancho. I showed Fely some of the plants that I have to give them - when the weather is a little cooler.

I'm thankful that it's almost bedtime and the dogs are fed and quiet and the air conditioning is working.

Thankful that tomorrow is another day.

He also made an excellent Jaime Escalante.

He's great in everything. LOL

I drove an old yellow Citation with rust spots on it in high school. My friends, inspired by my last name, christened it the "Hannah Banana."
Today, I am thankful for my own gift of gab and for Debra for giving me the ammunition I needed to be persuasive. MK is experiencing serious vertigo, but, as usual, was being stubborn about seeing a doctor.
Older people of Native American descent tend to be mistrustful of doctors. Doctors in the 40’s and 50’s made some horrific mistakes before realizing people of native blood often have radically different reactions to drugs. Plus, it irritates MK the way doctors automatically seem to go for a psychological explanation when the patient is an older woman.
Debra’s thread musing on the space program reminded me of something. Alan Shepard was grounded after Freedom 7 because of vertigo, but he had surgery to correct the problem and he went on to play his part in the Apollo mission so I knew there were ways other than drugs to address vertigo. That possibility of a real solution to the problem convinced her to make an appointment. Funny, the way random events connect up sometimes. ~Nadine~

(Debra) Garland, TX

I liked the Citation. Had a Pinto and a Chevette, wanted a fishbowl-Pacer.

Did not know about the genetic differences. Might explain why I have issues. Glad you persuaded Kay to get the vertigo evaluated.

Today, I am thankful for:

Gardeners hand soap.

Really ripe pineapple and strawberries. Thank you, Shelley!

These three creatures who constantly pester, and irritate, and worry me...and are life-savers I couldn't do without.

I love fuzzy faced dogs.
My '76 Chevette Scooter was the best , most reliable car I ever owned . 38 miles to the gallon , no air and 4 speed .
Thankful for decent health , if you don't count the little things.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Nadene, Native American older people are'nt the only ones distrustful of doctors.I do my own research before and after seeing a doctor.US health Care is not rated 37th in the world for nothing.Cuba is #38. France is #1.
Once i did some googling about french health care. For a month aferwards Everything i googled came up in french.No---I still don't speak french except for a few words.LOL
I'm glad Kay is having the vertigo checked out. May be inner ear problems.
Has anyone but me noticed we have a heat problem going on.Debra, STAY OUT of this heat.Whatever it is will wait till temps come down,;)
I'm afraid I'm losing a couple of Dogwood trees close to the house.
Tang is still round here. I have a jar in the pantry.I like it.
Here's another oldie I keep around.Noxzema.I remember when it first came out.
Am thankful for only an $86 electric bill. I figure a mistake was made and a huge bill is on tap for next month.
Am thankful for coke floats.A new bright yellow housecoat and an almost empty front bedroom,I'm turning into a sitting room.Sitting room is a very old description of a "MY Room."

Ah-h-h, what a lovely bunch of ankle-biters. What name does the white, Benji-looking fluff-ball answer to?
Man! Someone did a sweet job on that truck.
Today, I'm thankful Kay is a little better. Nadine dusted off a walker with a built-in seat we had around and Kay is up and moving using that. (Jim)

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Jim, I'm so sorry Kay is still having problems. If she gets worse get her to ER. I was hoping it was a tempory thing. If she upchucks get her to ER.
((((HUGS))))

(Debra) Garland, TX

Vickie, yes, ma'am. :-)

That's Russell. He does look like Benji. Or, if the fur around his face is grown out and brushed, he looks like a blond Wookie. The skinny-legged one to the left is Willie. And the tiny one in back is Zuzu. Russell is almost 10 and came from an unwanted litter when he was seven weeks old. Willie is six and came from a city shelter when he was eight weeks old. Zuzu is about four and was dumped at the end of a rural driveway when she was about one.

Go Nadine! From everything I've read about Kay, she does not care for immobilization. :-D Vertigo can be caused by allergies, fluid in the sinuses, fluid in the ears, an infection, a drug reaction--any one of a number of things. I get it badly when I have been out of Pristiq for a few days and start withdrawals. :/ Hopefully, the doctor will make a fast, simple, correct diagnosis for an easily treatable condition.
====================================================================================

Today, I am thankful for all-day high cloud cover and slightly lower than expected temperatures today.

Thankful for adjustable height, padded seat task chairs. On sale. :-)

Pickles.

mulege, Mexico

Today I am thankful to ahve heard from my friend who had bladder surgery and then dropped off the radar. If I wasn't so relieved I'd kill her. Darn I was worried.

Grateful it is still not going over 100 degrees here. We're back in the high 90's which slows us all down but I don't have to hide in an air conditioned room. I just turn the a/c on but mostly for Jennybear who has lots of thick fur.

Today, I am thankful for horse racing movies.

Debra - Russell looks like he is smiling in anticipation and they are all VERY interested in what's going on at the table. Food? Very cute pack there. OMG, re the weather. When you commented on it being a bit cooler yesterday, I went to one of my favorite sites, weather.com and checked out Garland's 'July' temps. Considering your proximity to my family in Plano and Richardson, I am amazed you are cooler there - day and night. They have not had a day under 99 this month and there were 14 days 99 and up in June. Guess the record for days 100 and plus was in 1980 at 62 days my sister says.

Jim, Nadine - hope Mama Kay will do better. One of my sisters has the vertigo problem from an inner ear problem. Shortly after her first Caesarean (huge botched incision) when she could not physically wear her seat belt, her DH had to stop very suddenly and she was thrown into the dash and in the foot well, hitting the side of her head. She takes daily diuretics to keep it in check. So many things could be the cause for MK and many may be easily solved.

Cando, that surprises me about the US being #37. Did not think we were that far down the line. And yet, people from around the world come here for medical treatment/surgeries. I think our friend Singing Wolf had it right about so many of our physicians being pimps for the Pharmaceutical companies though. Now, education would not surprise me. Our state, in the 60's, was close to the top and now I think we are #48 or 49. I do not want to get political here and expound on what I think the reasons are..... Still, overall, this country - to me and so much of the world - is one of the best places to live. Well, I WOULD kinda like to live in Bora Bora....

(Debra) Garland, TX

quilty, yes, it was breakfast. My friend Shelley was visiting from New Jersey and she photographed our routine. Unless it is something really spicy, I always break off a small piece of whatever I am eating for them, just enough for them to taste. They are patient and know that one small bit is all they get, but they feel like they were 'treated' and it makes them happy. :-) The cloud cover yesterday broke up about 4:00 and the high was again over 100. In 1980, we had 42 straight days of 101 or better and 69 days overall. That was the stretch where we had four days in a row of 110 or higher. Most unpleasant. This year is hot and the whole DFW area has had 27 days straight, now, over 100 and projected to keep on at least into next week. Since it isn't even August yet, we may break the 1980 records. Yet, I am deeply thankful that we have not had the heat indexes like some other areas have (feeling like 127 in Iowa, for heavens sake!) and I am thankful that the temps have stayed below 105 so far. Might not seem to make a difference on the surface, but after having endured 1980, it sure does. :-D

Midland City, AL

At least we are better equipped to deal with heat in the south, in the NE many houses don't even have AC and it sounds like they are getting higher than normal temps too.
We've been sweeping up lots of fur so PJ is taking the clippers to old Tater-dog again. He gives her a military buzz cut. :-) Tate doesn't have a long coat, only a thick one so she doesn't look TOO weird.
MK thinks it is an ear infection even though there isn’t any pain in the ears. She is taking Echinacea and Vitex negundo until they can work her in for an appointment and it does seem to be helping some. It isn’t so bad now that she is getting sick to her stomach. If it gets that bad again I WILL take her to the E.R., Vickie. Even if she is better by the time the appointment rolls around, she isn’t getting out of it! If she hesitates I’ll rev up my “motormouth” and she’ll have to go just to get me to shut up.LOL.
I know Echinacea has been validated in the lab, but I’d never heard V. negundo had any medicinal properties. I’ve been doing research on it for my peace of mind. Many plants here were chosen because they can do double duty, but I didn’t know that one was anything more than an aromatic. A friend did tell me once the smell of the tree reminded him of an essential oil he purchased to relieve cravings when he stopped smoking. It may well have been V. negundo. Aside from the anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammation qualities, in lab studies it was shown to relieve anxiety….and IT has long been used to treat dizziness where it grows naturally. On top of all of that, it is a top notch bee plant. It is blooming now when not much else is. Plants are such amazing and versitile things! I don’t think you could learn all about them in a lifetime.
Today, I am thankful to have access to the powerful research tool of the internet. It is like a magic box that answers all your questions. Sure, there is no guarantee it is the RIGHT answer. You still have to analyze the source of data and double check things. I still think it is pretty incredible though. ~Nadine~

Midland City, AL

Bora Bora? Hm-m-m. It must be a nice place. Quite a few American military personnel chose to stay when we pulled out after WWII. I’ve heard temps are in the 70’s and 80’s most of the year. I could handle that!
Today, I am thankful for peaches and breakfast in bed. It appears what Kay has is either communicable or environmental. Looks like I’ll be spending the day lying around being pampered. ;-( Life is tough. (Jim)
The Plant That Laid the Golden Egg

(Debra) Garland, TX

Nadine, I think the Internet is one of the most amazing, world changing, infinitely expandable creations in human history. I used to take deep satisfaction in using a library card catalog. The Dewey decimal system and all those little pieces of pasteboard?...sigh...it was wonderful and I miss it...but I wouldn't give anything to have it back as a main resource, either. Computers and instant access may cause a lazy disposition to stay that way, but to anyone with a project, or a sudden impulse to want to know something!, it can keep current interest going and lead off into all kinds of nifty winding pathways to all kinds of new stuff and knowledge. Which makes it just the bee's knees and the cat's pajamas all in one! :-D

If it is communicable, it's likely easily curable. Hang in there, guy and gals. [hugs]

Jim, I'd take a pass on the foliage, but I do like the egg. :-)
=======================================================================
Got notice in the mail the company is being state audited. I try hard to keep the books clean and up to date for stuff like this, but no question it is going to be inconvenient and time consuming. Not to mention there is no telling what we may have to pay if I made any inadvertent mistakes. Ack!!! Aiiii!!! Noooooooo :-O Ain't told the boss yet, neither. HE is a worrier deluxe and will make me crazzzzzy between now and then. LOL So--today, I am thankful for having Ativan. And, that I might even find a way to slip it into HIS Diet Sun Drop after I DO tell him. (snicker)

I am thankful that, as hot as it has been, my central AC unit is still runnin' smooth. Even 80 in the house feels wonderful compared to outside.

I am thankful for Branch Rickey's Little Blue Book.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Quilty,The upper 10%of Americans do have the best health care. But it don't trickle down. You have to have the money.
Bora Bora huh? Sounds like fun.I like France and Switzerland. I love the USA the best. One of the things i like about it is i can gripe my mouth off with no gov.repercussions.Of course heaven help any foreign entity that gripes in front of me about my country. LOL
Hugs to Jim and Kay. Being sick in the summer is the absolute pits.(Peach pits at that)
I agree that the internet is the greatest invention since fire. Not only can you learn about anything in the world but you can go almost anywhere VIA webcams. One can talk to,make friends with, people almost anywhere. And from home at any time of the day or night.
There are lots of people on Facebook I know but it took me forever to be able to navigate DG. Am just too lazy to attempt Face Book.
Better beleive I'm thankful for my AC holding up also. Have thought about having someone come out just to check it out.But probably not.
What is Branch Rickys Little Blue Book?
Good Luck on the Audit. That would give anyone a major migrane.
I still love a good library, but there are none close by. My favorite was the Longview TX library.Ya know there is the college of the Ozarks here. I need to look its library over.I've been to the college library in Russellville.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Oh yea The internet is wonefderful. I love those 'Bing' commercials! So True how we can spout irrelevant Information. Hace gotten on DH's case redentor on a purchase made on The internet without checking it out thoroughly.

Keep cool gays!!!

Midland City, AL

Debra, that’s a real bummer!!! Better get your boss some of that relaxing essential oil Nadine mentioned. Might want to get yourself some too. :-) I used oil like that when I quit smoking. You inhaled it to relax when things got stressful and you craved a cigarette. I thought it was a mixture of oils though.
Yeah, Quilty. Most online forums would benefit from a Sticky where some saintly individual would tack up any relevant or useful information buried up in the babble. If you're not time challenged, however, the babble can be a kick. Like reading a unabridged novel as opposed to the Reader's Digest condensed versions. Anyone remember those?
Don’t think I’ll grow the Wonder Eggs (Solanum ovigerum) again. It grew much larger than they claimed it would. It is suffering in a small pot. Kay and Nadine have some in the ground that looks great, but they are 4’ tall and I'm exclusively containers these days. If I’m going to make a container large enough for that, I would just grow Solanum melongena, an edible variety that has white, hen-egg shaped fruit, such as, ‘White Beauty’, ‘Casper’, etc. I think ‘Ghostbusters’ even turns golden the way the ornamental variety does.
Today, I am thankful I’ve never been audited. Kay has me going through boxes of electronic stuff. Trying to get more space by thinning out the stuff we don't need. Companies like the one you work for are a godsend, Debra. I have things that have never even been taken out of the package. It is a shame to confine them to the landfill. . Wish the IRS would go hassle someone that doesn't perform such a necessary service. (Jim)

Vickie,

Branch Rickey was a baseball man deluxe and a really decent man. Among his accomplishments, he is responsible for bringing Jackie Robinson into the major leagues.

I know I could use some of that relaxing essential oil Nadine mentioned. I, too, prefer to read the WHOLE novel not just an abridged version. You get what the author was trying to do more than with the other version.

Today, I am thankful for a nice email I got, Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters and Buckethead.

(Debra) Garland, TX

Whole book only for me. I can "abridge" it myself by skipping around. :-) Hated the Reader's Digest books. If you ever read one of those stories and then read the whole book, it's like two completely different books and authors.
================================================================================

Today, I am thankful for:

Reruns of Gabriel Iglesias second special on Comedy Central.

Keebler Mint Creme Middles Chocolate Graham cookies. With cold milk.

Rain. It will come again one day...one day...

I will try to remember Branch Rickley. Robinson was the best of the best.

Thankful for this thread so I c an be reminded of all the things to be thankful for .

(Debra) Garland, TX

vickie, i literally would not have survived adolescence without books.

katie, i am glad for temperate weather in your area. it can be more challenging there than most of us experience further north, right? :-)

kwan, i haven't gone to the range for a long time, but always went to the indoor. think outside would be fun--in cool weather. i used to be a decent shot. few years ago, boss got me a gun and insisted i get a CHL because i was transporting receipts and such at the time (none of us do now). still love the gun, had a great time firing it at targets, and pretty much refused to carry it. LOL it is where it needs to be--nightstand drawer where i should have plenty of time to get it if dogs alert me to problem. Ask anyone who has ever come to visit me. NO ONE would get in MY house undetected!! rofl

sally, thank you for that. i know there are some who do not feel comfortable posting, but do read the other postings and feel a little bit better themselves. it makes me happy when you have time to chime in because it lets me know you are there and makes me feel as if i am doing something to help. (hug) pat that little doggie for me.

mulege, Mexico

Today I am thankful to know that dark times pass. Enough said about that.

It's hot here again today and humid. I'm thankful for my outdoor tub where I can soak and bask.

Totally grateful that my house is secure enough that I don't have to panic at the possibility of a tropical storm. Or even a hurricane. Let these not be "famous last words."

When it gets really hot here plants can boil in the ground. We are keeping the new tangerine trees in the arroyo alive and fairly healthy. By next year they'll be better able to survive.

Tony and I go into survival mode. Keep the dogs and plants alive and the leaves somewhat raked. He knows I don't expect him to exert himself when it's this hot. Or any other time for that matter. We are do lucky to be able to "gl with the flow."

Thankful for all my friends here who remind me I'm not alone when times are dark. And they never stay dark here for long. We are the sunshine capitol of the world.

hugs all around, katie

(Debra) Garland, TX

Thanks, Katie, for the reminder. :-) This, too, shall pass.

I'll be off the puter for about 10 days unless I go find some wi fi . Am leaving my son's home to check on our stuff at the coast , then home to Georgia . My neighbor at the coast said most of my stuff looked dead from no water and the heat . I hoped to have loquat trees survive . Oh well , there will be another time .
Thankful for too much to list . Sister love to all , and hugs .

I need to get some of those re-blooming Irises. A bunch!

I'm adding another thing I'm thankful for...hummingbirds. Summer would not be Summer without them. I call this one Cara. Irish for Friend. She follows me in the garden sometimes and will come quite close.

We will keep him in our prayers, Vickie. Hopefully, your bit of tough love did the trick. Yeah, Cara is a beaut!
I could use some time on the range. I tried to shoot a pygmy rattler with a .22. Didn't have the right ammo. Don't think I did more than scare him out of the yard. .
