A navigation tweak is coming!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I think the thing I find most bothersome, aside from the large white space on the left, is that the grids of the posts no longer have a line on the right. It looks like I need to scroll when there is nowhere to scroll to. It's like the right side of the page is cut off.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I'm another who never uses it. MUCH prefer it on the right or wherever else it was before you made the change. Please, Please give us the option to remove it.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I dislike this format. It's very irritating. I don't like the big white space to the left.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Ditto to what jumper said.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

It's not JUST the big white space to the left (which is awful), but also everything is shifted. We are used to navigating to certain places with the mouse and everything is now shifted.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Actually, I find it annoying enough that I might reconsider my subscription when it comes due next month.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I find it annoying also. Much prefer it on the right side. Much easier on the eyes when on that side.

Crossville, TN

I have been evacuated from my home for 5 days now....and I get on my FAVORITE web site and it is all changed....*snif*;;;I am jtooo old for this and would like it back the way it was...even if I have to look at an ad once in a while!!!

Please pray for our firemen here fighting the Monument Fire in AZ...too close to home for comfort. Hugs Jo

North Augusta, ON

I have to admit that I hate it as well.
Just to make ad placement better in Plant Files?? which I rarely use...why not just change the shape of the ads!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hate it too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ya think they'd have some consideration and take a vote first to see if any paid subscribers would like the change.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Ug... i just noticed my page changed... and i stumbled upon this thread.

don't like it, but guess I'll have to get used to it.

but it is what it is....

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I too vote for the Right side .. please make this an option .. and I can't find anything that says "navigation" in my preference page either.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

i too have no idea what 'navigation' is either, so i guess i dont use it.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I hate it when people "fix" things that aren't broke.

I'm sorry, but I detest the navigation bar on the left side. It's extremely irritating. I would prefer to have NONE, rather than have it on the left.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I don't normally weigh in on things either, but this is terrible and I dislike the placement something awful! If it has to be there (honestly I don't use those options that are on the left EVER) I wish it would be on the right. I ditto what Joan said.

Quote from Joan :
It's not natural to the the way the eye interprets things. Like someone else said, it's like trying to read a book that starts the text a third of the way into the page. The human eye naturally shifts from left to right, and having this all on the left isn't natural. If it's necessary, it would be much better on the right side. The aesthetics are irritating.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

"I would prefer to have NONE, rather than have it on the left."

That's a great point, Sasha. I wonder if Admin could work with things from that angle, helping to give them what they are looking for (ad placement) and also appeasing the masses. As for me, I don't have ads turned on so this new change doesn't affect any ads I may or may not see but it sure is like reading a book from the wrong page. The civilized eye is used to reading from left to right, not from center to right. If I were a first-time user of DG I'd see the pages as being poorly programmed. (Sorry, Admin.)

Shoe

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

it's horrible
please delete it or put it back

Shoe,
Exactly my point. only you stated it with so much more clarity. Thanks! I also have ads turned off..always.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I just scrolled back up to see what exactly is on the navigation box. That tells you how much I use it. LOL I don't think I ever have! I've always used the tabs at the top. I think the only thing I don't know how to get to and have never used is "Featured Companies". Maybe this could all be better handled with another tab or sub-tab?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Yuk, really dislike it too!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

It actually makes me feel like there is something wrong with my font or screen, I can't wait to grt back to my home page so that it feels 'normal' again.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Sue, my thoughts exactly...

I came here to this forum because I thought something was wrong with my browser or the site. It's not a natural way for the eye to follow the page and the blank white page on the left is a bit irritating.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

One other thing that's irritating about it is that on the subscriber homepage where all your favorite forums are listed, there is no space on the left, yet when you click on a link, you get the white space on the left. SOoooooo confusing and irritating to the eyes.

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Not fond of this new setup...

South Hamilton, MA

Ditto for all who dislike the change. I feel like I have to move the page to the right. Ads are blocked here.

Round Rock, TX(Zone 8b)

I haven't read this entire thread so forgive me if someone has already mentioned this.

Maybe the navigation box can be changed to a drop down box in the top right corner. It could stay collapsed til someone clicked on it. Then they can scroll down and find what they want. Just a thought. ^_^

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

I am in the majority here that really find the new format very annoying. I know something about programming, and making it an option to not have the navigation box at all is very doeable. Or for us to be to set the preferences, as we do with everything else. All of the reasons for not liking this format given above are valid. I have ads turned off, and as far as I know, have never used this "navigation box". It is redundant.

I am asking nicely, please reconsider the members and their wishes before caving to the demands of the advertisers. They are going to pay money to have their ads here, so why not let adm determine where the ads go, but as paying members, I think we deserve to have a choice in how the format for our reading is situated.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I concur on all of these disagreeable points, particularly the redundancy of the navigation box.

Marlton, NJ

Sorry but I agree. Feel like I'm tipping over to the right.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

After this change happened a little while ago I found that it was extremely annoying to go from my home page (where the navigation boxes were on the right side) to any of the other features of the site (where the navigation boxes are now on the left side). It was as if the pages were blinking, like a disco ball, a police light bar or the way some of the TV programs do. I have a physical reaction to these phenomena - I get nauseous.

So, thinking I was going to be very clever, I went to my Preferences and moved the navigation boxes on my home page to the left side too. I CAN'T STAND IT!! In addition to all of the concerns everyone else has (and with which I agree), the columns in my Favorite Forums are all right-justified! This makes them even more difficult to read when the navigation boxes are on the left side. Everything looks so cluttered now, and I feel I should be reading right to left instead of left to right.

I know it's a physiological perception problem, but if people are going to feel uncomfortable when coming to Dave's they won't become members, let alone subscribers. Subscribers are already in the minority and we're losing more and more of them every week.

San Francisco Bay Ar, CA(Zone 9b)

I also feel like I'm tipping to the right, and that something is wrong with my screen. It's very disconcerting.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I'm with the majority here also. I do NOT like it at all. I feel off balance with it over there and it makes the page feel all scrunched up on my laptop. grrrr

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

It Just plain sucks peanut butter through a kinked straw.

Northern, NJ(Zone 6b)

I thought I was clever and extended the size of the viewing screen to the right and positioned the navigation box off page but when I switch back to the home page, because the information boxes are on the right, it cut off information I needed.

If I lived in China or the Arab countries this format would be perfect!
But
I
Don't
.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

- We need a little sticker on the top of the page that says 'Made In China'.
(lol!!)

Sitting in front of the monitor and find myself doing the Detroit Lean.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Looking around the web, I find a lot of sites I use have navigation on the left - Google, eBay, Wikipedia, Facebook to name a few off the top of my head.

I know this is a disconcerting change but I found after I gave myself a few days to adjust to it (with an open mind :-) it no longer feels or looks strange.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I would still like the option to change it
