A navigation tweak is coming!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Paid subscribers and members (unpaid) are already two different groups--subscribers are able to participate in more forums, do unlimited searches in Plant Files, turn off ads if they don't want to see them, etc.

South Hamilton, MA

Yes and the end of the words on the right side are now cut off so difficult to read on the last post.

Oceanside, CA(Zone 10a)

Quote from ecrane3 :

Yes, but it sounds like they need to code in a few more privileges(would be much easier with an up to date forum ware). Like ads off by default for subscribers. Then they can add a cell padded border to the right, remove the left border entirely, subscriber ability to customize at their leisure, etc.

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

I can't believe after all the complaints and negative comments from paid members that we are going into the weekend with this mess. It would have been nice to revert it back to the old way until the tweek we are supposed to stay tuned for arrives....
I vote with my $$$. Less members and/or less visits=less $$$ for the advertisers. Am I missing something in this equation?

I was initially made to feel I was an exception in not liking this "new and improved" when I commented back on June 17 "we don't want it, don't like it, don't use it, but have to have it so ads can be in a happy place". The reply was "Well, some people do like and use the nav tools - some had them on the left before we announced the change."...Why aren't all those people posting in support of this format???

Oh well...just needed to vent...again...

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

CMoose, no kidding. Me too.

It's what we should learn to be used to. Big business took over, and doesn't much care what the users think.

Perhaps they hope by leaving it, we'll get used to it and hush up.

No such luck. I still don't enjoy tilting right to read on my PC monitor.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I hate it, really hate it!!! There, I feel better now i've said something.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I've spent each morning with my first cup of coffee and Dave's Gardens for 6 years but this space on the left is maddening and instead of feeling more awake I feel more disoriented.

You can add my name to those who never use those "navigation" bars.

Please let's get back to left justified.

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

I'm surprised to see that I'm not alone:). Since I've never used the "navigation" on the right, I can't see why I would use it on the left. And for me, the white space really does give me a head ache, probably from constantly trying to readjust where I start reading. Almost half my screnn is now pretty much wasted space, from my perception. The box with names etc in also mostly dead space, which increases the unused/blank space to darn near 50%.
Not fun, and I find I'm avoiding the whole thing. Has me frequenting another garden forum, I'm afraid...

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

sad to say I think we are complaining to deaf ears.. only worried about me me me.. money money money

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Does seem that way.....

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Well, my subscription needs to be renewed in a few weeks...

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

It sounds simple to just revert back to what we had, but it's not that simple or easy - this navigation change affected quite a few areas of the site.

I can promise you that you have been heard, and we are working on a solution :-)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Terry and Admin staff.

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

I also hate the change! and ditto what momcat said....since IB took over this site doesn't have the feel of family and home anymore....my two cents to which I am entitled.

South Hamilton, MA

Hey Ginger, many of the 'family' people are still here.

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

you're right, but somehow it just doesn't "feel" the same. I signed up Sept.12,2001....the site was VERY much smaller. With growth comes change....sometimes good, sometimes not so much. Just seems sad that advertising "needs" to carry so much weight. Nuff said....what will be will be.

Central FL, FL(Zone 9b)

Let's not forget that this is a business, and I'm sure that Dave made a more than tidy sum when he sold it. Nothing wrong with that. And nothing wrong with the current owner's trying to maximize the site's earnings. It was nice that there was a "family feeling" with Dave, but it was still a business.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I agree it is "still a business", but as with any business, if the customer service is not there, it's only a matter of time that they have nothing. I can think of 2 different sites that are somewhat like this site (as far as gardening, and communication), and if the satisfaction is not what I (or anyone) wants, people will take their business to other places (as many saw not too terribly long ago).

Just like restaurants, I can get close to the same thing at restaurant A that I can get at restaurant B. If restaurant A's customer service is better (and my drinks are kept full :o)) I will go to restaurant A.

I truly appreciate that it has been said a few times by admin that things will be looked into. I do understand patience is a virtue.

Crossville, TN

Ginger_H and I joined DG the same day....and I hope to be here until you see me in the Memory Garden....and I hope that will be quite a while yet!!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I hate it... I'm glad someone pointed me to this thread.. Every time I go to my favorite forum, I'm irritated.. If I wanted to go to those links, I would.. I don't like them stuck in my way.. I'm here to read the thread, not have more links take up space. Sorry to be a grouch, but that's my 2 cents!

mulege, Mexico

I don't like the change. Also, other things are different since the change was made. It is becoming a PITA to try to check on the few threads I usually go to. It's not much of a business if your changes drive customers away. Duh.

Albany, ME(Zone 4b)

katiebear, could you be more explicit about the other problems you've had? I had been thinking that I was glad there were no other changes. Have I missed something?

LAS

mulege, Mexico

I'm too upset to write any more now. Maybe later. I'm just disgusted right now. kb

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

The only change I've seen recently is the navigation thing, so if there are others then I missed them too. There have been some reports on a couple other threads about bugs (watched threads becoming un-watched, etc) but I never got the sense those were on-purpose changes.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

There haven't been any other changes :-)

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

I dont like this format either and I would not miss the nav menu either. I really did not mind the advertising in the center of the plant files. It was not bothersome and Ive been using the site with ads turned on. We are used to ads being on our net pages. It's a fact of life on the net. Im OK with that. The ads in the center were nicely balanced and did not detract from the info on the plant from my point of view. Just my input. Cam

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

If if ain't broke, don't fix it!!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Shelly where are these places?

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I must be the most stupid person on DG. I have not seen any changes occur, and when I first joined I remember seeing something about do you want things on your right or left side of the page, but for the life of me I can not find where that is now. I can not even find a navigation box. I am a subscriber, a Market Place seller and a Plant Scout member. I feel like I am in outer space not knowing what everyone is complaining about. Honestly....where am I?

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I do realize the box on the left with all the places is the navigation box but when I went to make the changes earlier when it came to manage my preferences I got lost. LOL I guess that was my senior moment for that day. I have a feeling I have always had it the way they are changing it to. That would be a kicker wouldn't it. LOL I scrolled down and there was no Navigation listed. So I gave up. Sorry Terry, I never got back to you because I really felt stupid.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

That's definitely possible--there's always been an option to have it on the left so you might have had it there all along.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Now let me tell you ecrane3, you must be at least 82 years old to be so far ahead of everyone else. I am not as good at the technical computer stuff as I am at growing tropical plants. When I joined DG I was so confused with everything I just put things where I thought they belonged and that was where they stayed. I had enough trouble finding my way around to mess with the tools. I bet there are settings that I still have not made because I do not know how. I have been a member for years but I bet that is true. Thanks for your comments. Have a great day. JB

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

eweed, gardenweb and cubits are the 2 I know off hand.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

JBerger--The navigation option isn't there in the preferences anymore. Before they made this recent change, you could choose to have the navigation box on the left or on the right, but now after the change it can only be on the left, so there's no option to change it anymore. Terry's first post was from before the changes were made permanent so people could experiment and see how things were going to look. So you're not confused!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

ecrane 3, You have just made my day. Thank you so much. I have had the changes from day one I guess because I never saw any changes happen. I was beginning to think it was time for me to hang this up and commit myself to a home. All these people who are unhappy and I had no clue what they were talking about, nor could I find it. Both Terry and Melody gave me instructions and I was unable to do either of them. No wonder. It was already done. HA! That is too funny. What a relief.!

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

This change from right to left have given me an headache since day 1 cuz my balance is off due to me being hearing impaired..This does not work for me so I can only be on few mins at a time or I will end up with a headache..can't stand the page being off centered like this so I can only say...I will not be on browsing for awhile..only short time period now..going now since my eyes had enough for now..

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Shelly 221 thanks I know of cubitisd and post there a bit, I am also aware of the Gardenweb but think its not as friendly as this place use to be and still is at times. Ernie
