Tropical Garden #103

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

dyzzy.... most of the folks that I've talked to say they use like a small chain saw type of thing to dig out divisions of bamboo. I went over to Myakka (sp) on Saturday to look at bamboo for you, and wow what a beautiful grove of bamboo his business has. I wanted one of everything...

That canna durban is out of sight, drop dead beautiful.... I'm thinking that will be a big plant for me here. I love the leaves on the stripped ones... the bloom is just a bonus to me...

so when is your garden tour....??????

Prita,
Well, the rain was a "thought" today. I got all excited....and it went right past us. It's pretty bad here, there are alot of fires, and at this point I am trying to keep some things just alive. BUT, Mother Nature can give you hope, my Blue Sky vine has buds ! Holy Cow was I surprised to see them, as I have not set the sprinkler any where near it in several weeks. On the other hand, the wind that came with the "No Rain" storm, knocked down my Plumeria today and it broke off several pieces. So, I will root them and these are going in the ground with my Ginger's that have not bloomed. I'll be darned if I'm sticking them in a pot to drag in and out this winter. Two's enough, they will make it or not.
I got a good deal on a Queen Anthruim , I made a little basket for it, and at least I can keep a good eye on it. It's hanging near the Crocodile Fern, which I LOVE LOVE...it is sooo cool.

wow that canna is beautiful! and I love love the morning glory trees. the anthuriums are awsome, I am still waiting for mine to get going here.. it was so hot and windy today.. wishing for cooler temps and rain for all of you that need it .. ( mj)
I hope my anthuriums get big like that...

Garden tour . . . hmmmm . . . maybe November, when it will be cool enough for me to actually, y'know, work outside. My DH says he needs a machete to just get from the house out to the geek cave already - and it hasn't even officially begun to be summer yet. Once it rains . . . IF it ever rains! the jungle will win.

Seriously, my garden just gets out of hand through the summer because the little 10-minute intervals when I can go outside before I overheat are just not enough to do all the trimming and hacking and weeding that needs doing. So I putter for 10 minutes, then I float around in the pool for 20 minutes, then I come in and see if anyone's posted on the forum . . ahh, summer in the tropical garden! Some evenings, I do get a little 'real' work done, but when the overnight low is 78, well, cool enough to work will be around the end of October now.

Lychee fruit almost ready to pick! I have the electric eye scarecrow out there spraying every bird and beast that walks - or drives - by. Good thing my neighbors like me.

can I come and swim in your pool? LOL yumm i love lychee fruit..
all the babies in this barrell are reaching for the sun.. should I move them now?

Drew, I envy you that rain, we are over 7 weeks without a drop now. I didn't know Sarians did not like too much water, that is likely why I lost mine.

Had the opportunity to visit Chanticleer Garden outside Philadelphia this past weekend. What a fabulous place! It was absolutely gorgeous on a grand scale but it still had the feel of something one could transpose into their own, less grand, garden. They had lots of trops mixed in with perennials and shrubbery.

Cool yellow combo pot.

What the heck is this? Some type of palm but which? None of the plants had tags, the place is supposed to just look beautiful, not marred by plastic or anything that would distract from the flowers.

Close up of a variegated Beech tree they had espaliered against a wall. Cool colors, much like a hibiscus acetosella.

Another idea for a striking pot.

Just one more, LOL. Chanticleer is very close to the Philadelphia airport, if you ever get that way you should not miss it. In addition to the gardens there are vast meadows, streams and woodland trails chock full of neat plants.

Rita, I can tell a big difference in the size since the rain(fuller looking and standing erect). Wish we had Anthuriums like the King and Queen at Lowes!

Rachel,Had to pot the Sarian yesterday (the petioles were getting soft, and could see the first older leaf yellowing up fast! It will be ok) Tigrina is fine! Actually thought the reverse would be true. Is that a P. Maximum I see there?

Elaine, I had been covering them (then we went 3-1/2 weeks without a drop...Never let your guard down!) I was not getting out there in that lighting,it seemed like the lightning and thunder were at the same time. That's close!

Meadowyck, That Tree frog is actually on one of my Orinoco bananas. Those pads on their feet stick like glue to slick things.

Debra, I would move them now! I like to sit out at night and listen to all the critters while I am lounging.

Alice, The Sarians are a picky bunch. they like moist to almost dry and then repeat ... repeat...!

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

ardesia

those are some wonderful shots there. I'm sure you were soaking up all those beautiful plants. thanks for sharing...

homer, banana plant....wow that looked like bamboo...

rain please, we need some afternoon rain showers.... so everything will start to look green again... although I believe what little bit of grass there was has really gone for good now.... and the weeds are loving it....

Jan

Rita, gorgeous Frangipani vine and you have grown out that Anthurium very nicely. I'm sorry about your last two ebay purchases and I sure hope they recover for you.

mjs, you sure are picking some very beautiful Aroids to grow. Anthurium warocqueanum is one heck of a beautiful plant and I would say it should grow very well for you. Please keep showing pictures of it as it grows. Mine is still looking well and I sure hope it continues.

Drew, I was also thinking that your tigrina may be in more jeopardy vs. sarian but it's good to read that they both will be ok. Unfortunately, I was out bid in the last minute on the P. maximum from ebay a while back but that was ok. The plant I showed is Synandrospadix vermitoxicus.

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

It looks just like the P.Maximum. I can't beleve how fast my P.Maximum is growing. The leaves are almost 1-1/2 x as big as the last. Next week for your Robustum!

I just left the Tigrina in the ground and it is ready and throwing another leaf.

ardesia - wow the variegated Beech tree is really cool ! I tried googling it but couldn't find a pic that looked like that.

Rachel I sure will take more pics of the Queen Anthrium

We finally got a little rain..maybe a 1/4 in..not much but at least it's something.

Rita you sent cuttings of this last fall and I lost the tag...it rooted and is blooming but I don't know what it is LOL..besides pretty !

Very pretty MJ....Rita, please tell us what it is.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

mj, they had that beech tree espaliered against a wall and it was so striking. It was a dark cloudy/rainy day so the picture is not so bright. Can you imagine, some areas actually get rain, I had almost forgotten what it was. :-(

Here's the whole beech tree, far as I can tell, it is better suited for colder areas than mine and it appears to be a fussy grower from what I have read.

Very nice Espalier there Alice! I think those are cool, especially with odd trees!

Hello Everyone!!
Rain was so close to us last night, I could smell it.

dyzzy, I recieved a catolog from Logee's, they have Black Bamboo for $49.95 per 4" pot.
I can see the variagation on your Canna leaves. It is a very clear picture and I can tell that she is a beauty! I also enjoy checking out the plants in the background.

Not as clear and bright but here is a Plumeria Dwarf Deciduous.

mjsponies, I hope that the fire stays well away from your acreage. I have always stored my plumerias bare root with the bananas, just a thought if you ever want to save the new plants.
Good luck with your new Anthurium, you know that you won't be able to stop at just one.
You put a big smile on my face seeing that bloom, it is a Needle Flower Tree. Posoqueria Latifolia.

GAgirl1066, I can send you cuttings, if you would like a start of the Needle Flower. I find it to be a easy care plant.

Always in bloom and a hummer magnet. From candida

Joeswife, I have been potting up all my new plants that I have accumulated over the winter. I am going broke buying potting soil.
The salvia that you sent me is doing great. (pictures soon)
That is a good looking variegated Wentii in your last post. You are so far ahead of me this season, mine has not made an appearance.

The only cannas blooming are those planted in this island bed. The others are about 1ft. tall and sun scorched.

meadowyk, I am a foliage person as well, blooms are just a bonus!!

ardesia, Thank you for sharing your vist with us! I love the Bromeliad in the first shot, and the succulent mantle. There are so many points of interest in the last picture. The little palms remind me of one called Jungle Drum.

homer1958, glad to hear that your P Maximum is thriving, it is almost time for a updated picture.

RachelLF, thanks, I am doing everything I can to keep those babies alive.

Great red flower, Rita. Lobelia cardinalis? Yes, I have that Logee's catalog too. A 4" pot isn't a big enough start for me, I'm afraid. The $300 starts I saw were 5 gallon size and that grower didn't have anything smaller than 3 gallon pots.

Well, we got an agonizing teaser of rain just now - it must have rained for at least 45 seconds . . . argghh. Thunderstorm dark clouds, wind, and it went over at warp speed, one big rumble of thunder and it was gone.

I am watering my cannas and new plants by hand, lugging water from rain barrels. Thank goodness when we built the geek cave we put in two 600gal. cisterns. Even they are under half full now. I have a long hose to fill the smaller barrels around the house from the cisterns.

Noid canna, came in a bargain bag from Costco.

Rita...I get the hint :)) Hey what type Anthurium is in the hanging basket there?

It's killer!

Sweet Noid Elaine.

Good Night Everyone!

Rita that Anhurium is a hum dinger of a plant....LOL

Dzzy, I am sure you know the regular black bamboo is a runner and can get out of hand pretty easily. I was advised not to even plant it in a container on my deck because they said the roots would grow down through the drainage holes and reach for the soil. This place has bamboo for the southeast and their shipping is reasonable.
http://www.lewisbamboo.com/bamboo.html

I have been interested in a variety called Bambusa Lako for a while and one day I will invest in some. It takes about two years to turn a really dark black but when it does it is beautiful and it is a clumper rather than a runner.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Rita,
thanks for the Id....do you grow it in a large pot ? and it get's fruit ? I love anything that get's edible fruit.

Nice red flower there too....ohhhhhh GA girl .....LOL.....

dyzzy - I'm with on the frustration front with the rain.....and now fires all over...it's not even pleasant to sit out on the porch this morning...stinky and it's very disconcerting when you see Ash flying around.

Striped leaf canna I can't remember the name...

Rita,
You are so very generous! I would love a cutting of the needle flower!! If you were even in a 200 mile radius of me, I would come visit you.....you have the most beautiful and UNUSUAL plants. You get most of them off the internet, right?

MJ, we are having fires also. They are all around us...in very county (including mine) surrounding us. The closest being 20 miles away, it just started yesterday. Boy do we need the rain. Every morning we get up, you can barely see the smoke is so thick. Jacksonville, an hour away is warning their residents to stay inside because the air quality is SO bad.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

We finally had some rain last evening and what a blessing. The smoke from those fires tends to funnel right into the Lowcountry and it smells terrible some days. My heart goes out to those of you who are closer. I wish my son and DIL in JAX would bring the kids up here but they are stoic and will probably ride it out.

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

That one might be 'Bengal Tiger' , Mj. As Jan says, they're worth growing just for the gorgeous foliage. But it's hard to keep a canna from flowering. I keep mine in big pots so that I can water them more, since our sandy soil is so porous. Then I move the pots to the south side of the house in winter. Most years they keep blooming right through the year. So nice, when everything else is dying back.

I feel lucky we've not had any smoke from the fires near us. Breeze has been off the Gulf the last week or so. Down side is it keeps most of the t-storms inland, along with the smoke. Let's hope some of that rain gets to you today, mj.

Here's a little coral Barleria that has spread or seeded itself under the lychee tree. Yeah, lots of plants that say "full sun" really like a bit of shade here.

Thank you!

Good Evening Everyone!

dyzzy, let's hope the next time it rains on you for 45 minutes instead of seconds.
What is that foliage plant behind your pretty red canna?

meadowyck, thank you.

GAgirl1066, Suprisingly, I found the Needle Flower plant at Lowes. Yes, I have acquired quite a few nice plants from e-bay.

homer1958, the name that came from e-bay for the Anthurium is Oxiaba, but I could not find anything on it when googleing.

mjsponies, sorry to hear that you have to go through such hardships associated with the fires again.

Thumbnail by prita
Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

That's 'Shooting Star' clerodendron behind the canna, Rita. It's finally doing its job as a screen again, with nice lush foliage. I have hopes to see a flower or two in the fall. If not, I fear its days are numbered. I think a row of brugs would do a better job as a screen, as they don't lose their leaves quite so easily in the cold. Plus of course they'd perfume the whole neighborhood.

Your water garden is delightful! What's the fuzzy little flower? It looks like a gloxinia crossed with a white persian kitten.

My Peacock Ginger has really spread this year! BTW, I got my start of it in the 'indoor plants' section of either HD or Lowe's, so I always cruise their tropicals for odd treasures. Seems that in a pot the leaves stand up more than they do when they are in the ground with room to spread. But the flowers don't show up so well.

All my DG friends,
Asking you to say a prayer for our area now. The fires are out of control. There are 3 different ones within 5-10 miles of my home. There is one 3 miles from my parents house and all three are at 0 containment. One of my mothers friends said he seen the fire on the way home from work and said it looked like it was 100 feet in the air. They are evacuating people right and left. Please say a prayer for all the people in harms way and that the firemen and foresters can get this thing under control. Thank you so much!

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

GAgirl will say a pray for you and the others that are in areas of fire... The north was over rained on and now we don't get any rain..... when I lived here 25 years ago we always had afternoon showers to help with the warm weather, but it hasn't been true so far.... Come on now we need just a little rain....

Jan

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

GAgirl, you, your family and neighbors are in my thoughts and prayers. I can't begin think how thick the smoke must be down your way. This is such strange weather, yesterday in the afternoon the radar showed rain right on top of us and we didn't get a drop. Last night the radar was clear all around and we had a good downpour. Here's hoping you get some of the mystery rain soon.
