Plant Propagation part XXXVII based on my own experience

Columbus, OH

Good to know I'm at the right forum. I'm a crabby little old Italian lady in training. No sense of humor. Why bother, when you can hide in the garden.

I do at least try to save any cuttings or trimmings, to share with neighbors, clients, or trades here. I've given a lot of plants to a senior center, too. Those folks love a coleus, wandering jew or african violet.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sure wish that witch would answer me before my plants drown.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ok, JB, too late. They are going to be planted right now and you will never know if I did or didn't. You can cuss me out, beg me to tell you, or whatever but my lips are sealed. You will not ever, ever, know.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

You could have saved Aimee's lives. But noooooooo. You couldn't tell me could you? You just didn't want me to be able to say you killed my Aimees. That's ok, 'cause I will anyway.

You could have saved them both, or at least one.

Pawleys Island, SC

Happy Sunday everyone,

Hi Celene, It is nice to have some new people join us. We are all nuts, but JB, Jnette, and Sharon are the most outspoken of us. LOL The badgering is all in good fun and we all really do get along. Did you find out about the echinaceas? That would be interesting. I know that datura will not come true, in fact what I got from datura seeds that I knew were hybrid, looked like an entirely different plant.

Some of us here are gardeners, some are teachers ( dave) and some of us here sell our plants either through a nursery like JB, or online like Dave and myself.
I don't have any way to set up a physical business address, and I cannot run a business from my home, so everything I grow is either sold to people through word of mouth or online.

JB, if you lived closer, I would love to get that truck for Shawn. He has finally realized the vw bus is nice to have, but useless ( only because he is afraid to drive it) and he needs something practical to get back and forth to work. Star jasmine isn't the same as royal jasmine. Star jasmine is the same as confederate jasmine and is a trachelospermum jasminoides. The royal jasmine is a true jasmine. grandiflora I think.

Anyone want a 1971 VW bus with original upholstery. It runs and I drive it now and then, DS is just not able to grasp the no power brakes, no power steering thing. I also have the luggage rack that goes on top of it. If anyone is interested, send me a dmail and I can make you a sweet deal.

I found a website called patent genius and it gives you a list of patented plants. There was an interesting thread on another site that was debating whether patented plants could be propagated for your own personal use, or not at all. It got very heated at times but it was also very informative.

Jnette, I wouldn't give the Aimee anything until she gets re-established.

Sharon, I hope you feel better. It's a shame you can send your help my way. I have tons that I need to do, and no willpower to do them.

Hope everyone is having an awesome Sunday.
Sea ya, Linda

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

My sister bought a daylily plant for my other sister in CA. Would you believe!! She asked me how to send it, but she didnt' even consider the fact that you can't mail plants to CA. Don't know about bare root. I doubt even that. Anyone know?

I remember years ago driving down there with my sister in law. The usual questions at the border and we had a bag of oranges. My SIL pulled over to the side and made the kids eat all the oranges. LOL, she would not throw them away.

Wonder what she would have done if they said sorry the kids have oranges in them and they can't come in. LOL. Woulda been funny. huh? See why JB and I get along so well, I'm kinda warped too.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I have plants sent to me both in and out of the state here and there but honestly I don't know how it gets through. They do still have that fruit check thing, though they wave most through.

Celene and Ruby I have talked to you both on other threads, though Ruby is a dear friend I met on another thread here. Most of the people have gone to the Cubits world. Ruby how are the babies? Not so babyish now probably? My 2 are adorable. I am still very poor at propagating, even with my propagator. Things usually get black or mushy before they root.

Columbus, OH

I will let you know if the fancy echinaceas come true, I don't *think* these seedlings will bloom this year. What's the worst that'll happen? They'll be regular coneflowers, and I'll pot them up and give them away.

I played around at the...other world ;) and there wasn't much activity, it was probably a year or so ago.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

We all have but none of it feels the same to me. Unfortunately neither does here. I still like this better. We live on the edge not knowing if we will get a naughty finger pointing at us here, over there anything goes. lol Who needs that when you can call all your friends Old bags and wonder if you will get away with it!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, Dawn, I think Terry and Melody are the only ones in admin and probably don't care like Dave did. I think he is the one that made those rules. Melody will probably come on and tell me I am wrong. LOL, she has ears.

Jeanette

Columbus, OH

Hahahaha..I'm wearing a t-shirt that says "This bag is not a toy".

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, I didn't get any guff out of threatening to kill my Aimees from her. You notice she took my advice and went to Church this morning. Mass. And probably confession for all the nasty things she said about me. I don't think she will be forgiven for those tho 'cause she was so bad.

I can't even think as nasty as she does. She must have been taking lessons from those people on Soprano. She thinks she is Tony. Talks like a trucker. (sorry guys) and rides a lawn mower with her hat flying like the wicked witch of the East. Poor little Barney trying to keep up 'cause she has hold of his leash and his little legs and wind can't do it so she is dragging him. She probably wears chaps like she is on a horse. Boy,I can see her in my mind. Terrible.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Well, my one Brug the Tropical Sunset is doing fine, and recovered from the late freeze the defoliated them, but the other has given up the ghost. I am so upset. It just got hollow lower and lower down. It was not controllable. Sorry.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, I am not going to grow my brugs past this year. Our season is just too short. But all I have are the Tropical Sunset and the white (can't even think of the name now,) but if you want I will try to send you another but it would be late, maybe October.

Columbus, OH

I'm trying to convince my Snowbank Brugmansia not to die. It was 46 degrees here three weeks ago, that's just too cold for foliage to survive. I have an Angel's Blushing Beauty and Angel's Summer Dream, but this is the first year I've grown them and they're quite small, not that they get very large in the first place.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hey guys, I am OUT OF COMMISSION............My left leg, the one that the muscle or tendon or whatever the hell it is gave out, well, yesterday I was out in the greenhouse and I could not walk on it. I managed to get to the dog fence and up the steps in such pain wow, I did not like that. It was like someone sticking a knife in my leg. Anyhow I called the kids and they got me a walker and a cane and I started to ice it and heat it and all the you are to do with it. I do not know if it was a result of what the chiropractor did or not but I am waiting for my daughter to pick me up and take me to his office so he can fix it. If not, I will have to go to the stupid doctors office and go thru all the tests here and there and everywhere. He told me it was from sitting at the computer with my legs back under the seat and I pulled the muscles when I got up or something like that. It is all Jen's fault. And I do not care what you do with the Aimee. Stick it where ever.

I have orders to be shipped today but the P.O. is going to pick up the boxes tomorrow, so at least I can get them out. Then I guess depending on what this does and if I can drive, I will not take any more orders. I am almost sold out anyhow so it is o.k. if I have to shut it down. I will get back to you all later. Gotta go.

Pawleys Island, SC

Ouch JB, I am sorry. That sounds so painful. Ice, heat and aleve will probably be your best bet.

If any of you are deciding not to grow brugs, I will adopt some. ( I will gladly trade things for them) I lost most of my named varieties this past winter when it snowed. They were supposed to be hardy because they were planted in the ground, but I guess the snow was just too much for them. Anyway now I grow them in pots and just plunge the pots.

It is supposed to be super hot today, but it may rain. I am really praying for rain. I do need to plant a few little things that I bought when Mom and I went shopping, but I believe it will be an inside work day.

I gotta get started, I still need to do a few things in the greenhouse before it gets unbearable.
Sea Ya,
Linda

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I can tell you what is wrong with your leg JB. It is the meanness trying to get out. And until you change your ways and quit accusing me of all that stuff, it will not get better.

I don't think you need a chiropractor. you get to a doctor NOW!! Quit messing with those quacks. I am not kidding. Get that checked out. Where was it hurting? If it wasn't a joint, then it could be a blood clot. Get in to a doctor and quit messing with the other.

I will see what I get from these 2 this year Linda. I know what the white one is, Cypress Garden. Last year I cut a half a dozen long cuttings with Ys off of my plants and sent both Dave and Dawn 2 each. Haven't heard how Dave's are doing.

Do yours die down to the ground each year? I have heard of them doing that in some areas. In mine, I have to pot them up and take them in the house each winter. I can only put them out on the deck 4 months at the most. By the end of the 4 months they are just starting to bloom and then it is winter and it starts all over again.

But if they die down to the ground each winter it must take quite a while to grow all the way back and bloom again doesn't it? Even my daughter in Seattle, zone 8 takes hers in in the winter. She grows them under lights in her rec room all winter.

Gotta run, JB, you do as I say this time. Get your butt to a doctor. A real doctor!!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I am back and it is not a blood clot. That was checked when it first happened. I will talk later. It is the muscle/nerve at the calf of my left knee. I have arthritis in that knee also and when I was in the greenhouse Sunday I bent down and moved some clay pots with orchids in them, not thinking, and pulled it again. He had just fixed it Friday and I was doing fine, of course I sat at the computer with my legs back and did my GH stunt on Sat. and Sun. and messed up the entire thing all over again.

I am not stupid. My doctor is not a quack. He told me today if I am not 50% better by Wed. I will need to go to my medical doctor for more tests. But, when he was finished in his office today, (I took my daughter in with me to be sure she knew what he was doing) I was able to walk out without the cane I walked in with. My Medical Doctor is completely comfortable with me going to the Chiropractor and they work together.

Not in the mood for games today. I did not sleep well. Talk later. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sounds like a Charlie Horse.

Pawleys Island, SC

Yes Jnette, my brugs usually do die down during the winter. I think because this past winter was colder, I may have needed to take them in. I have 1 left, and it is missing a tag. If you decide to part with them keep me in mind, but if not, I have plenty of plants. LOL BTW the queens tears seeds now have wings.
Hope everyone else is having a great day, I am working on my todo list.
Linda

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

I tried growing brugs outside but that was a mistake. I read somewhere that they were hardy to zone 8. I don't think so, maybe zone 10 I learned later and now I have none. I do not have a lot of space or well-lit window areas in which to over-winter them or a greenhouse. Jeanette, when you overwinter yours, do you let it go dormant, almost dry, or keep it watered in a nice sunny window? In my foolishness, I put them in my peach-of-a-garden, but they never grew and of course, died in winter. I had Charles Grimaldi and some other peach colors.

Columbus, OH

You can let them go dormant, that's how I overwinter them here. Little or no light, dry enough so they don't sprout leaves, and they live pretty well year to year.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I have done both. The first year I had any I had one blooming in my bedroom in December. Guess that is what got me going. Even when I fought mites and aphids all winter. When I have room in my pantry in the basement I just water them3 or 4 times during the winter and they do get weak growth because it isn't quite cool enough but it is dark. Last winter I just left them in the kitchen and they did ok but the Cypress Garden got something not long ago and lost all it's leaves. Now it is sprouting leaves again.

If I repot them now and fertilize and water they will get 8 feet tall with tons of Ys and bloom the end of September. Not worth it. My daughter always tells me I am too good to them. Others have told me to beat them with rolled up newspapers every day. etc. etc.

I definitely will remember Linda.

Columbus, OH

Mine start blooming in July. I use the Bayer fertilizer/systemic granules plus Marathon to keep the bugs down, brugs certainly seem to encourage whiteflies and aphids here.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Ok, I go away for just a few days and your guys have diarrhea of the fingers on the keyboard..... have some cheese and slow down....

I've not been able to read everything (but will), I just wanted to say welcome to Ruby, this is a great group of folks who have lots and lots of wonderful knowledge that they share very openly.

Ok, got to get in bed so I can get up and go to work tomorrow..... I really need a night job, but really I'm just thankful to have a job....

Jan

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well I am back and Jnette, leave JB alone. JB, I do not know how you put up with her. Maybe all that moss and mold I saw in Washington has invaded her brain. She seems nastier than usual.

Yes, we do talk about gardening here sometimes.

They grow Brugs in Arizona and they do very well. I do not need another obsession. I have two plumerias that are getting ready to bloom. They are in a pot and stay in my mother's old room totally dry for the winter. Some individuals take them out of the pot and hang them in the garage soil less.

I went to the physical therapist today and she worked on my shoulder. First day I have felt normal. I have a nail and dental cleaning tomorrow. Then i can hit the garden and get caught up.

My tomatoes are ripening but my peppers are just sitting there and no growing. I am going to dig around them tomorrow and see what is going on under ground.

Flowering Purslane plants are showing up at the nurseries. I have 5 and need about 7 more. They take the heat, bloom all day but I am only using one color in one area, rose/orange and some yellow in another. I am going after my nail appointment to search for my colors. My blue garden is not going to be a blue garden. I will post a photo when I get done.

OK, Dave where are you? The weekend is over. Lee where are you.

Jnette, back at you. Love you all, Sharon.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, Sharon are you going to clean your teeth with your nails, that way they will all be clean? ROTFLMAO

What the hell do you mean leave JB alone? She was 10 times worse to me than me to her. She is a Witch with a B. So there JB. Take that in the leg. I just kicked you. Did you feel it? Right in the calf of your leg? LOL

So Celene, you say you do them as Roses? I have done that before, but mine do not bloom in July. Lucky to have them bloom at all I guess. That is why I don't care about them and am going to send them all to Linda as a booby prize.

Jan, you cannot go away and expect us to just stop. We do have that thing you called us diarrhea LOL of the fingers. Did you ever think of getting glasses? Maybe your eyes are crossed. You need to read faster.

You all better hope JB gets back soon 'cause I have to be nasty to someone.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Okay, here's a REAL propagation question I've been ruminating about for a couple of years.

I read eons ago in one of my many gardening/houseplant books that you could induce side shoots on tall leggy plants (think dracena). I'm remembering that it involved making a cut in the stem/trunk, covering with plastic wrap, adding root hormone (?), something . . ...

I am caring for a very large norfolk island pine which is spindly and could use some new growth beneath the boughs where old boughs have fallen away from drought/neglect.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this is possible with a pine? Let me have your thoughts please.

Thanks.

A.

p.s. JB - I swear by chiropractic treatment. Hope you're feeling spry again soon.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Up,kinda late aren't you Amanda?

I have heard of that method also, putting a small chip of something, toothpick or something in to hold it open a little putting a wad of peat moss or something and wrapping in plastic, air layering. But, have no idea about pines. How tall is the Norfolk?

How long are you caring for it? You could try it and if it doesn't work buy one just before the owner claims it and tell them you tried it and it worked. LOL, the devil in me.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I heard about that too but never tried. I have the most success by cuttings put in a pot full of water sorb crystals and a little soil mix, with sprinkler water keeping it moist. I also take a piece of the end of a plant that has a long stem or branch, dip it in hormone and sink it in the ground until it grows roots and then I cut it off the plant and put it in a pot till the roots are stronger.

I have a little Brug that dies to the ground each year and never gets big, but I get a flower or three on it. I moved it when dormant and it is about 9 inches tall at this time. So we will see. It is in a sunnier spot.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Jntte:

I used to be a heavy-duty night owl. When the internet was fresh, I found a lot of people were still awake in other time zones (CA, TX, AZ, CO, WA) when I came home from work and my brain was still zippy. 12:30 a.m. seems kinda early - made me laugh to think about chatting away at my computer in Boston in 1996 when AOL chat rooms were a whole new world and I was awake till 3 or 4 a.m.

About the pine - I'm in a master's program and have adopted the plants on the 5th floor in one of the main buildings for my degree program. They looked like when I started in August, 2009. Turns out some of them belonged to an older woman who had back problems and walked hunched over. She couldn't even SEE that the tops of her pine were browning! That pine is over 10' tall and pressing up against the ceiling/windows. There's no where to move it to. She and I have discussed lopping off 2 of the main trunks which are hitting the roof to allow the third, smaller trunk to develop. This tree doesn't need any branching. I needs a haircut!

There is another pine which had been abandoned by someone . . . together with some sanseveria and some kind of succulent. This one is over 6' tall. This is the one whose boughs have fallen away underneath. I'm not doing it to make more plants. It's purely aesthetics, I guess, but I have been wondering about it now for 2 whole years!!! :D

I will be finished with my program at the end of fall semester. Maybe into spring, so I have some time. I have been removing these plants since it concerns me when I can't get to Raleigh to water during the summer or over holiday breaks (it's 79 miles one way).

The pines are the largest plants there. A fairly large ficus remains, though it could be pruned to fit i my car. :D

There's also an umbrella plant that has been neglected. Funny - last summer I poured water in the pot and an ant hill came pouring out! On the 5th floor! And after I'd been watering it for months! Crazy.

Anyway. It's not the first time I've adopted plants in public places. But those are stories for another time.

Thanks for your thoughts and comments.

A.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

mornin all...I am kinda blue today. my grandfather fell out of a wheel chair and broke his knee and 3 ribs. its a bad thing when you are his age.

Amanda you are talking about air layering. it works quite well when you use long spagnum peat moss not the stuff they mix with soil and comes in bales. what you do is peel back a small part of the bark and treet with rooting hormone take we moss and wrap it around the trunk and hold it in place with plastic wrap or some other way. keep the moss wet and in a few weeks you should have roots. once you have enough roots cut off the rooted part and plant.

Who pea'd in JB's cheerio's earlier she really got a head wind and ran with it. You know me I want it all and i want it now, but if I have to wait I will... I'll just puff up and sit sadly in the corner waiting for the plants to grow.

grand abaies wer a hoot had a great time. i am just mooving slow today might do a small bit outside and go back to bed. its one of those days. a great bday party with 15 - 20 screaming kids from 7 and younger. lots of I skinned my shin and bumped my head booboo's but all in all it was great. as it was lillies bday we had a frog themed party. I will post pics later. gotta get moving
see ya l8er
Dave
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

ROFLMOAO Oh Dave, you made my day. I read "who peed on her cheerios" and just got hysterical. OMG that really hit my funny bone. Barney thought I lost it I was laughing so hard outloud.
I am still alive, still kicking and Jen will be sorry when I get back to my old self. I will let Sharon take her on for the rest of the week. I is resting with ice on my knee..
I get more work done with one leg than Jen gets done in a week with two.
I packed five orders this morning and two went to CA bareroot. The post office is picking them up this afternoon since I can not drive today. I am hoping I can drive tomorrow. I just do not feel I can get into the jeep and carry boxes into the post office, so I got them to come here.
I cleaned the bird room, did two loads of laundry and now I am going to feed the dogs and make a grocery list so the kids can get me some groceries. I could go and do it but I can not unload them when I get home unless I make forty two trips in the house and the leg will not let me do that. It is 75% better. I can bend it to put socks on and I was able to sleep with it bent last night. He had to stretch the hamstring and the other muscles yesterday in my leg, plus put pressure on a spot just behind my knee cap to release whatever was locked up. As soon as he did that I was able to walk.I have one sore spot and It hurts when I turn quickly but otherwise, it is better. When you get older, you can not move too fast and that is what I do. I forget I am going to be 83 because I am always moving fast.
I have cuttings to plant and pots to clean this afternoon but I must take a break first or I will be back in trouble again. I MAY NOT SIT AT THE COMPUTER WITH MY LEGS BACK UNDER ME. EVER AGAIN. Thanks for your concern everyone. I appreciate it.

I am delighted to see this thread talking about propagation again. That is a plus.It is so nice to see new faces and those old ones returning to chat. Love you all and thanks again for your thoughts. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I guess I'm the guilty one Dave. I peed in JBs Cheerios. LOL and I'll do it again if she doesn't change her ways.

Sharon, you better heat up your computer 'cause JB is claiming sick. She finally gave up. She couldn't think of any more bad stuff to say about me. She is sitting there with her notepad and pen straining her pea brain and can't come up with anything.

Well, gotta go fertilize the tomatoes. I'm telling you, this month of June is colder and wetter than last year which was the coldest and wettest one on record. We didn't get one ripe tomato last year and it doesn't look like much better this year. I just told Bob we were going to have to close in both ends of the hoophouse again to heat it up in there. It is only 64 in there now with the reflection of the clouds on it. Would say sun but don't know how to spell it any more it has been so long. I think we have had 2 days above 70 so far this year. And that was like a degree or 2 over 70.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Hey you old bag, you just cannot keep quiet can you? Even have to tell us how hurt you are that the postoffice has to come to you and then tell us all the crap you are doing instead. What a phony. Just trying to get someone else to do half your work.

And your kids fall for it and go to the store for you. Can't you find someone else to do the mowing while you play with the birds and do the fun stuff. Be sure you have all the bandages on before you answer the door, someone might catch you and know what you are doing.

You wouldn't know what propagation means. You use plastic Aimees to take pictures of and then send out dead plants to unsuspecting people like me.

You just sit there and play with your jacks while everyone else does your work for you.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

You all crack me up. I can't get a word in edgewise, and thats unusual. But then I can't top your antics anyway.
Sharon, what happened to your blue garden???? didn't my starts start for you? Mine are getting ready to bloom. Did you need more starts?
JB those little birdies are sooooo cute. Reminds me of my Bandit when I first got him. He was still being fed via spoon when we got him. Love those birds, but he is the only one I have left.
No flowers blooming yet, has just been too darn cold. Thunder, lightning, and lots of rain is almost drowning the little buggers.
Jen stop sending it over here, please.
Welcome to everyone. Later, Lee

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Gosh Lee, I thought you were out there paddling around in your canoe. You have to speak up. Now how long have you been around? You know darned well that all you have to do is type in whatever you have to say.

LOL, I am not going to scold you any more Lee. I give you know who enough. You guys had enough from both of us. Sorry you all.

I sure wish I had better things to send to you Lee. We have even a colder and wetter June than we had last year. If I didn't have the plastic over the hoophouse I would not get any ripe tomatoes this year. I am hoping I will anyway. The plastic does get them heated up and the plants really look good.

I wish I could say the same for my container plants. The perennials that have been in the ground for years seem to be holding up good. We need to go out and clean up all the old crap from last year. Haven't gotten to that yet. Seems like there is just too much to do and not enough hours in a day.

Now Bob has a computer. My daughter got a new laptop and gave him her old one. Same as the one I have. She wanted a bigger screen. Nothing wrong with the one she gave him. But, now he plays with the computer instead of working outside. And I am no better.

A lady on here who is a quilter, is interested in buying my Bernina sewing machcine. So, I spent the morning researching them. I had bought it at an estate sale. However, once again the weather was crappy.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks for the thoughts on how to propagate new plants, but I am not trying to propagate new plants. I want to encourage new growth/side shoots, not roots.

I will keep looking. :)

A.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

If you top out a hardy hibiscus, it causes the plant to create more branches and get more bush like. Maybe that will do the same thing with your pine tree.

I have physical therapy tomorrow so I will not start in the landscape until Thursday. We are suppose to get cooler by then. Suppose to be 105 degrees tomorrow and then back into mid 90s. Mid 90s are OK as long as you follow the shade and hydrate.

Lee, your plant is starting to send up shoots. But just starting. I will check tomorrow and take a photo.

I had a tomato, cucumber, Vadelia onion, bib lettuce sandwich for dinner. Delicious.

JB, I am sorry but I cannot keep up with Jnette. No challenge. Sharon.

PS. I want a full poster size photo of "Wiener". Nothing to do with that he is a democrat. I do not care. But what man in his right mind would think that was a great body.
