2011 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol. 2

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

In case you want to go back http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1172788/

We now have a male taking up the spot on the shepherd's hook like we do every summer!

Now if he would just come when the light is good.....we were having a little shower so very overcast today.

Nice ones nanny! Glad you have a male hummer staying around.

Thanks for starting the new thread!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the new start Nanny...that cute little guy sure reminds me of your "Ed" a few years back. He is adorable!!

We still have several Hummers but not the over 100 we had a few weeks ago...thank goodness since it was taking lots of time and money to keep the
feeders full. It has been too hot to get outside and get any pics lately.

Clinton, MD(Zone 7a)

I think he likes you Nanny.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Your right rose.....he made us think of Ed too(so sweet you remember Ed!) I am sure some of those around carry Ed's genes!

Morgantown, WV

We had about 7 hummingbirds when the lilacs were in bloom, but about two or three weeks ago, they disappeared. Was it because the lilacs are done blooming, or could it be something else?

Marlton, NJ

Hi Fretless, Unless something like a predator bird scared them away I would assume they just moved on to where the could find more nectar plants.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Don't take it personal like I do! LOL. Despite all the plants and feeders, they don't want to stay here. I probably won't see another until the males start coming through on fall migration.

Marlton, NJ

Yes I'm at a low blooming stage right now and they haven't been around. Hopefully they'll come back when the Monarda blooms and the Honeysuckle has it's 2nd large flush of blooms.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

LOL with you Mrs. Ed.

Quoting:
..Don't take it personal like I do! ..
I myself have resolved that they don't like me as well as my next door neighbors who hosts an average half a dozen at a time, but moi? One or two at a time at the most. lol.

Pelle, my Blue Salvia is one main attractor of hummers at this time.

You know, LL, I think that woudl be REALLY insulting if I had none and my neighbor had a bunch. And what about if I USED to have them and some neighbor like Rose stole them all from me. lol.

My honeysuckle is at peak bloom right now. zip, zilch, nada!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Let's play a blaming game it's Rose's fault and the good neighbors. lol

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Hee!

I guess I spoke too soon. I just saw a hummingbird perching on one of the branches I have set up. Originally, that branch was for them, but now the house wrens have taken it over. Anyway, I didn't see where it went to, though I have a number of things blooming now, plus three feeders.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I found this fella was checking out the Mexican hydrangea (Clerodendron bungei) blooms, decided against it and went for my species butterfly bush.

I am seeing females coming a little more often now......need to refresh the feeders today after this awful heat we have been having.

Hello everyone. I just joined and was absolutely delighted to find this thread. Besides gardening, bird watching and especially humming birds is a love of ours. We have been 'star struck' with these precious little jewels since hubby was buzzed by one years ago, several times which terrified him at first (he thought it was a huge bee)lol. Way up in northern Minnesota we host them through the full summer. Never gets too warm here. We have three feeders in front and another in the back yard. We plant several flowers for them too, however they seem to adore the blossoms of our apple trees most.

Fantastic photos everyone!!!

Welcome momEmonster!!

I'm glad you've found us mEm. :))

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

I can have better pictures in the evening of these little Hummers. They are more tolerant of the camera noise. I think it's because they need to fill up well, before bed. They still have to deal with cold night here.

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone!

Raining . . .again. Adorable little male hummer is perched on the feeder outside my kitchen window in the pouring rain. He's multi-tasking . . .grabbing a snack while taking a shower. Boy, I could sure save a lot of time if I could figure out how to do that.

No luck trying to take a picture. The raindrops on the window made it too blurry.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

well you're lucky anyway. I sat outside last night until 8:45 hoping to see an evening hummingbird. No luck. So much is blooming here too! ah well, guess I'll just have to keep waiting.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I've lots of rain here last 24 hours, as if it was trying to make up for lost time. Hummers only stop by briefly to visit. They must congregate at Roses' farm? What do ya think? lol

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Getting lots of visitors all day now...just never when I have the camera handy!
I had to take away the feeder I usually have right out the back window and put it up on the oriole platform because of Gus. I was afraid he might try to catch a hummer! lol

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Nan, congrats with your new puppy Gus, right? I've one here (a new puppy named Daisy--she's a handful) at this early hour, and I'm out of breath chasing after her. lol. While out with Daisy this morning, I caught a glimpse of this beauty. I think it's a she on my Salvia;

Gus is a handful too! But he makes us laugh everyday! Congrats on Daisy!!

At least I can still see the hummers at the back feeder! lol

Nice shots of your cute hummers Lily and Nanny. Also, congrats to both of you on your new additions to your family.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thank you Duc, Daisy is getting better everyday. She's a joy today, but yesterday she sure tried my paitience. Nan, love your hummingbird. I saw mine being chased by other juvies in the garden. When they hunt for insects.

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

I am so observant that I just realized we had a special thread for Ruby Throated Hummers. DUH!
