Hey Alice never heard of that place, I bet it was awesome the way you spoke of it!
Tropical Garden #102
OMG Drew, you have to visit. They are in Sanford and have so many greenhouses it is hard to figure out which way to go first. Three or four of them have annuals and you can pretty much pass on them but the other 15 or so GH's take a while to peruse. They are not the most organized and you will sometimes find the same family of plants in different houses but it is to be expected as they are so huge. Some plants do not look as good as others but the variety is over the top. Not to mention their prices are about 1/3 of the "other place" up there.
waaaaay OT. Watched a story last night on the Discover Channel about the Sasquatch in the Florida swamps. Most evidence of a real entity I have ever seen. Any of you ever see/hear about it?
Jan, only some passion vines bear edible fruit. A lot of the popular ones don't set fruit. If you want one that does, you have to ask the nursery, or know which variety to buy. I have two red-flowered ones in my yard passiflora coccinea (see pic) and a hybrid 'Lady Margaret' that do not make any fruit. I think they breed them to make pretty flowers, and this makes them have no fruit. There's one with all lavender flowers that is really gorgeous but doesn't have fruit either. They are very nice, easy care evergreen vines if you have a spot where you need a (really robust) vine. Cover an ugly fence in one season, no problem.
You'll have to wait in line for mangoes from me, kiddo - everybody wants them and I fill up the freezer with mango ice cream before I give any away, too. But if you drive around your neighborhood with an eye out, you'll almost surely find somebody with a tree that's loaded down right now. Make friends . . .
LouC - really? Sasquatch in Florida? I'm from British Columbia and I thought Sasquatch only hung out up there! He must have migrated south like me for the great weather.
Debra, here's a 'hi mom' picture for you.
Brugs sent to me from Kansas in April. Big one is Cherub, smaller one (comin' on strong) is monster white - that had only one tiny leaf a month ago. I had to re-pot Cherub already. It is shading my clivias nicely now and will go into the ground in the fall.
Rita sent me a start of a pretty little variegated brug but it is taking its sweet time putting up new leaves. I've moved it over with these two so it will catch on, maybe.
So much fun!
They use to call me Sasquatch growing up! My arms were long, I had big feet and long hair!
Alice, I take it there are tropicals in those greenhouses?

There are all sorts of plants there, I thought about you because they had a good selection of EE's. Not sure how rare most of theirs are however. Some of the houses, maybe 3 or 4, had annuals but we skipped those. The rest were perennials and tropicals. It is worth a trip before it gets any hotter. I did find a new begonia, still called by just a number.
Hello Everyone!!
It was a pleasure viewing everyone's pictures. This is what we have been waiting for, lots of sunshine and blooms. Now if we could only get some rain.
Peony1066, I had my Gmelina Philippensis planted in one of my covered hoop houses, where it was protected in the winter. Unfortunately with the severe cold winter, we also had a flood the year that it died. I could not tell if it was the water or the cold that killed it. Good luck with yours.
plantladylin, thanks, I can tell what is blooming by the scent, prior to seeing the flower. This Hoya Latifolia had me guessing for a while though, flowering for the first time.
Joeswife, I like the alocasia display on the windowsill, they all look very happy. Your hard work keeping them growing through the winter is paying off big time, mine are just now wakeing up.
I would not plant the Red firespike in the ground, if needed I would re-pot a size up. The plants in the ground in my garden will come back but never get mature enough to bloom, the potted firespike will bloom in the fall.
The plant in the picture is a Brazilian Red Cloak, they are easy to root if you would like a plant. I have only positive comments regarding this plant.
dyzzy, keep posting those delicious pictures, I have never seen fruit on my passion vines, maybe this year.
If your little Maya does not make it, I can replace it for you.
candela, thanks for showing your new plants, I love your Philos as well!
LouC, the Discovery Channel is my favorate, but I missed the Sasquatch episode, maybe I will catch the repeat.
Costus subsessilis, I have no idea what the little specks on the leaves are, the plant seems to be quite healthy.
dyzzy...
There is a tree two doors down, guess it is time to intro myself...LOL
Mango icecream, now that sounds yummy.....
Jan
dyzz, that monster will get really big if it is in the ground or a big pot. watch out! LOL Cherub also gets huge, I had four huge stalks from a root ball of Cherub planted under the pear tree last summer, it was awsome. My Maya has buds..
Rita if you could save me a piece of that red cloak that would be awesome. My yellow candle plant shrub surviived its winter inside and is throwing new leaves. 102 here today.. lots of things popping up everywhere I had forgotten about..
will my hoya ever bloom?
Rita, the little Maya is fine, with a couple of little new leaves. It's just confused how the heck it got from it's nice Texas greenhouse to this wild jungle in Florida! I had a variegated Brug 'Snowbank' a few years ago, and it was not quite as lusty as the big pink one, either. I have lots of patience for a variegated brug.
If you like, I'll start you a cutting of 'Purple Possum' passiflora. It will fruit for you, for sure. There's no stopping it. I have a bowl full of ripening passion fruit in the kitchen and I can smell them from here 10 feet away. I collect up a big batch, then juice them all together. Delicious and so good for you.
Deb, my plan is to plant Monster White where it will have some competition so it won't get too humungous. I have this giant live oak that I swear has roots miles from its trunk. There's a space under it where the tree has been thinned and is now pretty sunny in the afternoons. My clivias are not happy about the extra sunlight, so I'm thinking Monster White will be perfect for that spot. btw, Cherub is already in a 16in. pot in that picture!
My little Kaemferia groundcover gingers blooming - new little sparkly flowers every morning.
oooRita, that plumeria is gorgeous!! Where did you get it?
All my plants are suffering because I can't devote much time with them. I am constantly on the road lately, with this house we are building. Everyday there is a issue/question or something that I have to go 'pick out'. Its really picking up now, we are on the inside and its 'What paint, stain, moulding, lights, bathroom fixtures, appliances, floor product, etc? I have never shopped so much in my life.....
Hopefully taking a day off from that to work in my yard today. I will try to take some pictures and post them.
