Funny.....my airedale twins used to bark at stone lions at the entrance to a nursery I would go to.....I figured that was just typical airhead behavior......

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Allison, I hope you can get Hope to behave eventually. Jerry is pretty stubborn about coming when called. He comes whenever he pleases, though I have been able to get him to respond to a whistle. He knows he'll get a treat when I blow the whistle. He can be pretty lazy, though. When my sister wanted to take him for a walk tonight she just could not get him to get up. I blew the whistle and he came to me after thinking about it for 30 seconds.

maybe I should try that... I did scream to her.. who wants a cookie.. which is her key now.. but that didn't work ... even with the leash on today.. I told her come.. and she told me to get lost.. had to reel her in

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I know Dexter is one that doesn't respond to voice that well, but if I clap my hands or whistle he does an about face.

Bugsy, the cat, has two favorite toys. One is a crumpled up piece of paper, the other is a stick. He loves the stick game, however I don't think he would bother a statue to play stick with him.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

How about clicker training?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think there is a congressman who likes the stick game. ^_^

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

The congressman probably would bother a statue!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I tried the clicker with Lily.. it didn't work

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Allison, the way I did the whistle training with Jerry was I would have him with me, blow the whistle and immediately give him a treat. I did this at least 10 times or more so that he would know blowing the whistle would get him a treat. He didn't like the sound of it at first. Now I have to pair it with training to come when called, which I have yet to do. I trained Patches with the whistle a long time ago so that I could take her to the bogs and let her run, and if she got too far away I could recall her with the whistle. It worked really well for her. Jerry does not seem to be quite as food motivated as Patches, though, or maybe just lazier. I never thought I could find a dog lazier than Patches.

Hope is up and down with treats.. some days at class she would gobble em up.. and some days she couldn't care less.. so dang headstrong .. now that I have been tying her .. she is less interested in going out.. she sat next to Randy this morning when I went out to water.. and just cursed me out

Sampson is getting shaved today. I took the day off work to take him and pick him up as the groomer at the vet is about 45 mins. away. This is the first time he has been shaved since he came to live with me, and I am anxious. He is good about being combed and brushed - he just gets too hot! He has already been panting this year.

I hate it when he comes home looking like a skinny rat - but it has got to be done. In the mean time I have just picked up 40+ cat toys out of the livingroom!

Thomaston, CT

I'm picturing Sampson shaved, Memory, & giggling....poor boy! Allison, terriers are hard to train....too independent. My pointer mix only needs a head shake, & she comes running.....

OH POOR SAMPSON!!!!!!!! LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

naked baby!!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! Sampson looks hilarious! I had a persian that I had to shave every year. He hated being brushed and got all matted. He looked just as funny as Sampson.

Jerry was driving me crazy today. I was trying to get things done in the gardens and he kept wandering off and taking his sweet time coming when I called him. I didn't go in and get the whistle I should have. I ended up tying him up. Then I had to take a bunch of ticks off of him. Yuck! Need to get some Advantix.

This is it for the night. My older dog Xena is not eating right. What I see is I put her bowl on the floor with MR G and she backs off. I know she has bad teeth. BUT as the day goes on like 11 am I can put her food on the floor yes the floor and she will eat.

I dont have good vibes on this. Love the dog to death, death do we part only. Not a sentimental person here but this is ripping my heart right out of my chest and brain.

freaking out - if Xena goes down it will be 3 in one year. crap feel tears.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh Sherrie, I know how you feel and wish there was something I could do for you.:(

South Hamilton, MA

It's tough when our animal friends get older. Has a vet seen her teeth? If I had a tooth ache, I wouldn't want to eat either.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

so sorry Sherrie... hope things improve

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

So sorry Sherrie

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Sherrie, I'm so sorry about Xena. I pray that things will improve for her so she'll stay with you a while yet.

I took Patches and Jerry to the vet tonight. Patches had her rabies and other annual shots and got her nails trimmed. Jerry was up to date on all shots except Lepto. Will need a booster in a couple of weeks. He also needs a fecal test done, so will bring a sample in on the weekend. Also has a rash on his belly. I forget what the vet called it. Said he would send me home with an antibiotic for it, but he must have forgotten to. Will have to call them tomorrow. And Jerry was loaded with ticks, too. I had taken off at least 20 before going over there. Well, the vet and his assistant found about 30+ more while we were there. I could not believe it! I thought I had gotten them all. Anyhow, I got flea and tick stuff for him, too, a new product called SimpleGuard3. He said it works better than Advantix, which I usually use, and is cheaper. Kills fleas and ticks and repels skeeters.

So I'm $285 lighter, and I still haven't gotten his antibiotic and the fecal test. GRRRRRR!!!!!! Oh, well, gotta keep them healthy. Oh, and the vet loved Jerry. He has such a sweet disposition.

I wonder if simple guard works on people.

I had a horror moment last night... saw it all happen and couldn't move fast enough to stop it... let the dogs out... hooked Hope up to the leash... Jily was doing her normal mosey .. Hope ran around her and caught the surgery leg in the leash and kept running... Jily cried.. and for whatever reason Lily felt compelled to beat the crud out of her.. was screaming bloody heck at them to stop fighting so I can get her leg loose... of course it didn't happen right away.. so I am not sure if Jily is gimping from the leash or Lily biting her front foot... I just don't get it... I know now and then they fight but why when she cried ... had a hard time sleeping last night

With 2 dogs 1 always tries to be the stronger alpha dog.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

kick em when they are down though??... but I do think Lily is going into heat soon.. she seemed off a few days ago too.. I just feel like throwing up I feel so bad for Jily

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I gave her an anti inflammatory I had left over after the surgery

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Poor baby, she's ahd a rough few months!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

think it's the front foot that is sore.. not the surgery one.. after the pill she was not gimping as much.. hopefully it's a quick heal

Thomaston, CT

Sherrie, hugs go to you & Xena.....Allison, I'm sure Jily will be better soon.....one of my dales, Skip, had mild hip displaysia, and walked with a slight limp....his sister, Jazz, always bit him on that leg if he didn't do her bidding.....She was definitely the' b' word...

aaaww Spanky!!

Thomaston, CT

He looks like Debi's dog.....

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Wow...Spanky brought back a funny memory. My mom's neighbor had a boxer named Butkus. My GSD, George, and Butkus would run up and down the fence line to the point of exhaustion. Nothing could grow on their running path, didn't stand a chance.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That's exactly what they do!
