What a pretty face!
Spending spree pt #6
love collies.. but had that bad experience of being bit by one as a kid.. they do make me a bit uneasy still
Welcome, Ingrid. Nice to "meet" you.
Jan, your Saul and Gracie are very pretty. Have you checked out our pets thread yet? If you want, here's the link. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1182508/
Allison, I was bitten by a collie as a kid, too. Well, almost bitten. He tried, anyhow. He was a mean one. They finally had to put him down after he bit a baby who came to their place. They owned a farm stand and greenhouses and he was loose on the property. I'm not afraid of collies, though, as I know most are good natured.
My best childhood friend (who is still my best friend) had a collie growing up. They adopted her, and she was already obedience trained. I believe she had been shown but was not up to breed standards. Her name was sunshine, a tricolor. She was the sweetest dog, and so well-behaved. My friend lived in Cohasset, MA, and we would walk to the downtown area with sunshine not even on a leash. She stayed right with us, and whenever we went into a shop she would wait patiently for us outside. That was one smart dog.
Karen
Always liked collies. They look so friendly.
nutsfordaylily (love the name) thanks for the link... Yep I've been seeing everyones, whats life with out a fourlegged companion. My best gardening days were with one or more of my collies following me around the yard as I planted this, move this from here to there.....
Sad thing is that there are so many backyard breeders for Collies and they don't working with them and then they are very afraid and even some become fear bitters. I use to do rescue as I feel if you breed you have to do rescue even if itdoesn't come from your kennel.
Ok so sorry to have taken this thread away, so now back to the regular topic.
Jan
the bite was all strange.. I grew up with it.. knew it from birth.. never did anything to it nasty or anything.. just got my glasses .. going into 1st grade.. went into the house and was waiting by the door for my friend to get something out of her room.. Butch came up to me and ripped my lip off.. I was reaching out to pet him too.. (amazing what detail I have of the event even now).. like he didn't know me or thought I was breaking in the house or something???.. after the whole plastic surgery and months and months of healing.. he broke though the storm door to try and get me again on my way to school.. I jumped on the roof of a car screaming my head off until someone came to get him.. dad put his foot down and said to the owner .. the dog or the house.. you choose what you loose... didn't want me to be tormented even more than the years of nightmares after the whole thing.. was hard to keep growing up down the street and they hated me for killing there dog.. the whole thing was bizarre
oops.. sorry too
Oh like it was your fault the dog bit you...idiots
I had a German Shepherd come after me when I was about 5, was playing around with the boy that owned the dog and I guess the dog thought I was hurting him or something, he came after me and I rolled myself into a ball and his fang left a puncture mark on the top of my head, so scared because I never had any problems with any dogs, for years after that had trouble with the hair growing in on that one little spot. The doctor didn't believe what happened.
Oh you know we never stay on topic!
yeah I know.. LOL.. I always had a dog growing up as well.. my mom has great photos of me and our beagle mutt in my highchair together... yeah it was a big one.. not like the regulated ones today

At least you don't have to dig huge holes for Irises
True, but I usually prepare a special bed for them. Dig down about 10" lay a layer of crushed stone, then an inch of sand. Afterwards I mix pro-mix, sand, peatmoss/compost and fertilizer.
Wonderful face on that tri....collies can be nippers...they're herders after all, but I grew up with my aunt's collies, & they were wonderful. Pixie, great irises! This seems to be a good year for them.....earlier this spring I bid on 2 DLs, & they arrived yesterday....they look wonderful, & I'm trying to find a place for them today....gardens seem jam-packed.....
Oh wow, didn't realize how much work they were.
My family had a collie before I was born, wish I knew her.
Jen, they really aren't fussy, they will grow in almost anything....just not wet. I'm the fussy one! LOL
I don't do anything to mine.. dig a hole.. stick em in
onewish1 It wasn't your fault it was the pour collies owners fault. They are to blame for not making the collie behave. And yes they sure can be nippers.... but that goes with herders....LOL
I miss my S Iris so much.
Do you think they would grown in my zone. I so want some more, but don't want to invest if my zone isn't really a good one for some success for them?
Jan
sure one of the iris experts will answer that for ya
Jan, S. Iris are reported to grow from z4 - to z9a/b.....you should be ok. I'd ask someone over on the iris forum if there are anyone growing them in Florida.
I just found iris borers, :-(, will be redoing my iris bed
debik
so sorry to hear this heart breaking as well as backbreaking news. Hope you are able to save your plants and not be too warn out from it.
thanks pixie.
Jan
Oh no Deb. sorry. :(
Sorry, Deb. Hope you can save them.
ohhh that's terrible Deb.. hope you can save em
well yall I just got finished looking at craigslist and there are two homeowners who are having plant sales tomorrow.... I'm in heaven, I'm in heaven.... Getting up early and going to check them out.
Jan
Have a great time Jan and let us know how you made out!
Never thought to try Craigslist. There is a local garden club that has a sale every spring and next year I am going to donate to them and then buy thing that I know are not mine LOL.
I got a Spirea there this year for $4.00 and it is doing really well and I was iffy on getting a shrub. What I love is the plants are tried and true to grow locally. They obviously do so well they need to be divided out so you can't go wrong.
That's a good thing, bookreader......
I did very well, I only spent 15.00 and came home with my first bamboo. I've loved them from afar for so long. This guys yard was a bamboo haven. I've never seen mature bamboo up close and personal... I think I counted 20 different varieties. Just incredible. I purchased a black bamboo that does well in container as I don't want to plant any until we own a house. Once I get my camera from SIL I will post a picture, then I picked up the Florida state flower, and another plant and I have no idea (isn't that just like a gardener) what the name of it it.
Meet another guy there who spent 150 on the bamboo, he just started growing bamboo about 3 years ago and he only buys at small plant sales, he won't pay what the garden center's are asking for them.
well, I'm off to go visit my sister up in Holiday, FL.
Jan
I give up, Jan....what's FL's state flower?
bamboo is invasive - my wife has wanted it for a while not me:) and i control the yard
Not all. There are clumpers. Also, you can contain the spreaders.
Grass, bamboo and snakes scare me. I wouldn't plant Bamboo even if it was a clumper. Clumps can get very big quickly. I am so tired of digging out invasive stuff that I am not planting anything that isn't well behaved, unless Victor personally volunteers to come and help. I think our horseradish is taking over the world. Patti
I hear you, being the victim of chameleon, loosestrife, chasmanthium and eupatorium Chocolate - all planted by me.
I've heard people say eupatrorium 'Chocolate' is a thug. I have had six plants for about 5 years and it never comes up anywhere other than where I planted it. I wonder why...?
Coreopsis - Tickseed but I don't think it really is the state flower, I think that guy just thought it was.
My bamboo is going to be grow in a pot, so as to avoid any unwanted runner at this rental house...
Jan
I sold a bunch of plants today during an unadvertised plant sale. Made about $60 and spent a lot of time giving some really nice folks tours of my gardens and just talking about gardening and plants. Had a great time, and will be doing it again next week, but this one I've advertised on Criag's List. Here's my ad: http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/gms/2421669599.html
No spending on plants lately. I have to take Patches to the vet to get her rabies and other shots on Monday. Will take Jerry, too, so my vet can get acquainted with him and check out a tooth that doesn't look good.
Debi, sorry to hear you have borers. I get them a lot. This year I sprayed for them. Will see if that helps.
I have never had that Eupatorium 'Chocolate' spread anywhere here, either. I've had it at least 5 years or so.
Karen
good for you Karen!!
